Installing an I30 N Rear Strut Brace on my Elantra GT N Line! | Hard to Find!

  • In this video we install an I30 N OEM rear strut brace on my Elantra GT N Line. I have had this brace for almost a year now and I finally decided to install it in the car. This first gen brace was replaced with a second version that is cheaper but also looks less cool. These are hard to find on the used market and very expensive new, so I am glad I picked one up last year for a reasonable price.
    NOTE: For those with Tech package (Infinity Sound system) there are two grounds on the passenger side where the strut bar will go. You will need to cut the carpet the same way and stack the low ground onto the upper one to use the lower hole for the top bar of the strut brace. This will make sense once you cut the carpet and see the two grounds.

      Very close. You get the updated 1.6T which is arguably better. 🙂

    Our 2019 GT N-Line does have the annoying rear seatback latch rattle, so I'm tempted to install one of these just to fix that! With regard to the rattle, I spent months hunting it down - at first I assumed it was coming from the rear spoiler, so I removed it an ran without it for a while as a test - of course no difference!

      You can always loop some electrical tape around the metal loop and it should solve the issue too. I would wrap the tape around about two or three times to start.

      Pleased to report that the electrical tape wrap trick worked a treat - couple of turns around the latch bracket on the right side banished it forever (we only had the rattle on one side - so far) ❤

    Question to Justin - it looks like your car has the 2-level adjustable rear hatch floor. Our 2019 GT N-Line is fully equipped otherwise (i.e. with DCT and Tech Package), bit it does NOT have this option. Do you happen to know if that was a stand-alone option, or if it was maybe only available on non-JBL audio cars (because of the rear subwoofer in the hatch side panel), or if maybe it was simply quietly dropped at some point in the production ?

      I actually knew about those before release but they weren't something I wanted to add. I have heard good things though.

    Thank you for making this I was trying to feel for the bolt holes but I guess the cover was too thick. I plan on making my own with a solid piece of aluminum instead of trying to buy the Hyundai part. The next thing I am trying to figure out if the holes exist for the extra front bracing underneath that the i30/veloster N have. I would also like to eventually like to swap to the aluminum knuckle/bearing and brake setup.

    • @JustinKelly
      @JustinKelly  3 роки тому

      Yeah you won't be able to feel them as I tried the same thing but there is foam behind the carpet and it is too far away to feel. I would love to see how your custom bar looks when finished. As for the under car bracing, I am not sure but I believe each side has 3 holes and it connects in some form to the rear part of the subframe in addition to the body. There is also that smaller center brace which just has 2 holes on each side that goes over the exhaust which I am not sure about either but I know which ones you are talking about. I briefly discussed the brake swap in my next video but it is very simple to do after you get custom 3.5mm spacers (With different hub bore) machined to fit behind the VN rotors.

    • @greatnorthauto
      @greatnorthauto 3 роки тому

      @@JustinKelly They connect the front crossmember to 2 subframe areas instead of the ones we have that just go to one part of the sub. 62476-K9000 & 62477-K9000 are the part numbers. I haven't found a # yet for the one that goes across the exhaust. The front crossmember on the N-line is the exact same P/N as the VN and the only difference on the control arms is the air deflectors to cool the brakes. Pierce motorsports makes a brace that reinforces this area for the VN. In theory it should all work but I fear they might not have bothered to drill the holes to make it easy. Id like to go with the aluminum knuckles to offset the unsprung mass of having bigger brakes but they are not cheap at $500+ new each not including bearings.

    • @JustinKelly
      @JustinKelly  3 роки тому

      @@greatnorthauto I know of someone selling the center exhaust brace from an I30 overseas. I guess I should look to see if any of the holes are there. What is the weight difference in the brakes you want to add? I really should have weighed my wheels I just installed on the car but they are lighter than the WedsSports I had which were about 7.5lbs lighter than factory. Wheels/Tires would help offset some of that weight of the brakes but maybe not totally.

    Oooohhh this one seems fun. Actually kinda looks like a good DIY project, potentially.
    Side thing, is there a tray that we can get that makes the trunk flush with the folded seats? This might sound weird, but I'd actually like to lie down back there sometimes, but the split level makes that a little uncomfortable lol.

    • @JustinKelly
      @JustinKelly  3 роки тому

      No I have not seen anything to make it level. It is a little bit of a bummer that they arent closer to being level. The dual floor is closer than the one without but I did like that the everything was flush on my last GT. If you wanted I think you could fabric something out of wood and cover with carpet to get it close.

    I think this strut is so hard to find, because it got replaced by the 9999Z057146 brace, which looks different.
    Weirdly enough, new Hyundais with the strut brace option still come with the one you intalled, which is 655A1S0000

      @@JustinKelly Oh yeah, the OEM one is MUCH too expensive. I wonder if its any stiffer than the new one you get from the Hyundai accessoire shop. Another pro of the new one would be, that the rubber tray for the trunk should still fit (doesnt fit with the OEM one and I kinda need it, because I often transport REALLY dirty rc cars and dont want to ruin the carpet)

    Hey Justin, do you know if the front strut brace from the I30N will fit? I found both the new version rear brace and front brace from the link you provided for your hydraulic hood struts. Prices are $170 and $487 US respectively. I think it would be an awesome mod also not too unreasonably priced if it fits.

    • @JustinKelly
      @JustinKelly  3 роки тому

      I am not sure. I know you do have to cut the wiper cowl to get the bar to fit on the I30 N's but I am not sure about the bolt locations being the same or different. I would love to find out! Maybe I can investigate if I get enough support on Patreon. 🙂

    I'm actually so bummed that Hyundai did not bring the i30 N for the US market :(
    The Kona N just seems like an inferior choice over the i30N(to fit the tastes of the perverted American penchant for SUVs😒). I'd rather just have the i30 N hatch or fastback.

      I have to make one because like you said we don't get one (Plus they have some really cool parts). @@JustinKelly I had already called Juston at Buerkle Hyundai and was going to put money down on a Kona N. But before I drove up, I found out it was going to be 2WD. A had a connection with an Asian UA-camr who raced the Kona test mule at a race track in Asia and he looked under the car and NO AWD. 1/3 of people saying they wanted a Kona N dropped out like I did, because it did not have AWD. Once you have a AWD street car you dont want 2WD anymore. My Kona almost has the same hp and torque now and when I get my head bolts in and IF the clutch can take it I will have more hp and torque then a Kona N. I am very very close to the same handling. I may have more since I am lowered 2 inches.

    • @JustinKelly
      @JustinKelly  3 роки тому +1

      @@tedtedness184 I think the Kona N will still be a stout performer when it is released but there are some drawbacks. The weight is one of the big benefits since it weighs only about 100lbs more than the VN DCT but obviously the ride height is not ideal. I don't mind FWD cars but I havent driven a VN yet to see how it acts with the LSD and everything. I assume it does very well overall from reviews.
