I don't know if it's an ilusion of camera for me, but I just now noticed that Vengerov plays with a higher than average bridge, he's so awesome :) And I can't believe this is the first I listen of Laurence Power, such a gifted violist. The Viola is sadly a very underrated instrument, so beuatiful in tone, why is it so overlooked by most composers?
The discussion these instruments are having with each other lifts me up to somewhere most extraordinary.......Viola tone so rich, Violin singing, thank you wonderful musicians
Could we stop commenting on the player's faces?!! It just shows they're enjoying it. Their performance is amazing, and the faces they pull are not going to destroy the performance, unlike Nigel Kennedy's infamous stamping feet...
A few days ago, the PBS in my area aired “Live From Lincoln Center” kicking off the 2011 Mostly Mozart Festival. The first night fittingly featured all Mozart’s works, 4 pieces in all. The second performance was this K364 which is the only symphonic work he composed with a solo violin and a solo viola. Listening to the beautiful music is already blissful beyond descriptions. Watching the two soloists’ interactions adds fragrance to the heavenly atmosphere. This YT version is equally well done!
i like it so much...the beautiful music what they make, and the visual appearence too. They seem like enjoying what they are doing...if you play music, communicating is a very basic and important part. They do it so well! Bravo!!!
This performance is so amazing. I've never liked Vengerov but he sounds great in this video and he works extremely well with Power. This is my favorite interpretation of my favorite "concerto" for viola.
#1 the playing is phenomenal and there's no going around it. #2 this is Royal Albert Hall, people! In other words, its a live performance in front of a 5,000+ audience in a hall built in the mid 19th century that has seated 9,000 plus. The building is elliptical and in case any of you forgot your calculus and physics, the acoustics run wild. If you think its exaggerated its because we're viewing it from a camera that's in their faces. What about the people sitting in the back, some conveyance...
Vengerov is absolutely tops for Mozart - and so is Power. And, Helena-angel, music should be a holistic experience, for ALL senses to participate and enjoy... Anyway, this an outstanding performance - by ALL of them.
should be offered to the patrons who paid hundreds of £ to attend this auspicious moment in British classical music. #3 It's a live performance, get over the fact that you don't like to look at them, if that's the case listen to a recording and stop watching them play. I thoroughly enjoyed this because you see the interaction between soloists and orchestra. There will never be anything like a live performance, especially one that portrays the intimacy and drama such as this one.
@josesolismusic Lol why would you assume that I'm just making this up? The purpose of the scordatura is to enhance the brightness/loudness of the viola. If you don't believe me just do some research on the piece. Eb is actually a really easy key to play in for viola so even if the viola's projection was up to snuff its tuning wouldn't require any alteration. Power projects well here because he's an amazing player and because there's more access to loud violas nowadays for players like him
If somebody could play this emotional wonderful music without making faces the person would be quite emotionless, i think. So stop commenting their faces already
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Why would you assume I'm assuming you're making it up? I was asking about the actual purpose of the scordatura in this piece, because, for example, Paganini 1st concerto is played in D now, but it was supposed to be in Eb with the violinist doing what we're talking about. And ANY key is relatively easy for any instrumentalist, but flats are preferred by brass, not by strings. And why would you think I'm making up the data about Eb being harder for strings? lol
How come everyone is only commenting on how the musicians look like? I thought music was principally to be heard and not (only) seen. How about everyone just LISTENS!
@henceqed ok nevermind. I figured out where I thought I had heard it today at work. Its similar to the opening phrase form his piano concerto 21, andante. Its sort of the same but not quite, so false alarm.
That phrase from 4:08 to 4:22, which is played once for each soloist, I swear I've hard that before on some other of mozart's pieces. And he was known to reuse some of his melodies from time to time. Does anyone know if I'm right or just smoking pot on this one? And if I'm right, can you tell me what the other piece is?
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Hmm, are you sure they're not tuning it like that because it's in Eb, which it's uncomfortable for string players, and so it's common to raise it half a step so they are actually playing in D? BTW Violin players also do that. If the projection was much poorer than the violin, we would hear a marked difference between the violin and the viola here, don't you think?
there facial expressions are exaggerated because the point of the piece is to see who is more virtuosic, and we all know the funnier the face you make while you play the more virtuosic you seem.
Power and Vengerov make a perfect team. Power perfectly balances Vengerov. Having two high power horses like Vengerov and Bashmet would put the piece over the top. Power helps give the performance balance and stability. It's Mozart for goodness sakes, not Brahms. Besides, Bashmet is not the ONLY kick ass violist. Time for people to get used to another phenomenal violist: Lawrence Power
@josemiguel95 you really shouldn't speak on another artist's behalf. I respect your opinion and you are correct about their facial expressions but to say they aren't serious is very subjective I'm pretty sure you don't know them personally. As far as Perlman is concerned, I suggest you look at more of his videos, he's got it there too.
@windstorm1000 Back in the day there were practically no viola masters. Also, viola doesn't project well against an orchestra. Even in this concerto the violist is supposed to tune all of his strings up a half-step for extra projection
Vengerov is looking a little stupid maybe to someone when he plays, i think he is cool. And a hell of a violinist. Viola player is excellent technically, but I think Vengerov needs Bashmet. This violist is just not crazy enough. Sorry for criticizm.
Oh my word, what a beautiful piece.
4:08 - 4:16 are probably the best music lines I have ever heard in a symphony.
I enjoy this leisurely tempo. The playing is so sensitive and lush. It really sounds like everyone involved relishes this music.

I absolutely love it from about a minute to the end! It almost sounds like one instrument if you close your eyes! They are amazing performers.
i like it so much...the beautiful music what they make, and the visual appearence too.
Why don't composers write more viola concertos? Its got a beautiful tone in the hands of this master.
Maxim! what a brilliant the music is! It is one of the most beautiful and brillant music i ever heard
How can a person possibly be this brilliant & prolific?
#1 the playing is phenomenal and there's no going around it. #2 this is Royal Albert Hall, people! Such a masterpiece--works on every level. Mozart accomplishes so much tonal richness by dividing the violas
4:37 talk about full open sound! that was nice
Just too good for words! Thanks for uploading it!
He is the most gifted violinist and violist in the world
I love the Concert Master's Facial expressions more than Vengerovs' or Powers'
Great performance from great violinists. .
Daniel Roberger it's violin and viola.
wonderful...
they're so awesome
ahh true, you're right about that. I'm glad someone else takes notice of these things :)
amazing
Vengerov is absolutely tops for Mozart - and so is Power. And, Helena-angel, music should be a holistic experience, for ALL senses to participate and enjoy...

Molto Bello !!! Questa è Musica !!!!
Vengerov's Mozart is (way too) sweet!

HERMOSO
they do!
wow lawrence powers is amazing
I love Vengerov.
SUCH A WOUNDERFUL DANCE BETWEEN THE TWO..........
@helenagothicangel13 totally agree
4:07... Vengerov make it better than perfect.... My God...
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Why would you assume I'm assuming you're making it up? And the slow movement of one of the String Duos is veeeeeery similar to the slow movement of the Concertante.
How come everyone is only commenting on how the musicians look like? I thought music was principally to be heard and not (only) seen. How about everyone just LISTENS!
There must have been a least one moment where Lawrence looked at venegrov and thought "Imagine the comedy factor if we swapped instruments"
Those guys are playing the shit out of that concerto.
@magrinelli I'll bet playing Mozart baked is a revelatory experience.
Vengeance et pouvoir, quelle équipe magnifique!! Mais où est la fin du 1er mouvement?
@MarcusCMarcellus PFFFFT, ahaha. You've got to be seriously kidding. I completely agree with saxzw.
@henceqed
ok nevermind. I figured out where I thought I had heard it today at work. Its similar to the opening phrase form his piano concerto 21, andante. Its sort of the same but not quite, so false alarm.
lol 2:23 -2:33. I don't know why, I just cracked up laughing when I saw it.
@ilostoff Ce n'est pas aussi dur que beaucoup de personnes le font hors être.
WHAT!!! WHERE IS THE REST OF IT?!?!?!?!
That phrase from 4:08 to 4:22, which is played once for each soloist, I swear I've hard that before on some other of mozart's pieces. And he was known to reuse some of his melodies from time to time. These men loved playing this wonderful work by a Master. Was the problem with men enjoying themselves.?
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Hmm, are you sure they're not tuning it like that because it's in Eb, which it's uncomfortable for string players, and so it's common to raise it half a step so they are actually playing in D? Nice Vengerov's fail at 4:22~4:23
i agree , it disturbs a bit..
👍
there facial expressions are exaggerated because the point of the piece is to see who is more virtuosic, and we all know the funnier the face you make while you play the more virtuosic you seem.

I'm a violist, and I want to play this so badly...
I have heard the same theme in some works of Mozart at 5:30,,,anyone remember?
i'd like to see them both play with Kissin, it would be a very funny spectacle three crazy behaving musicians! btw Vengerov is a beast.
so what is the name of this piece?
Looks and sound very romantic-intimate
@josemiguel95 you really shouldn't speak on another artist's behalf. hahahaha!! I love them :D
22 deefs!
does anyone know at what age did Mozart write this???? it's simply magnificent!!!
He was at the age of 26
@@airpanache wow, thanks! I can't believe I waited 10 years to know that piece of information 😂 I know I could've googled it, but somehow I forgot!
@MoscowMaestro Touché sir
@1186841 why is that?
dang that french horn player at 3:32, hehe he's fine :) oh yeah as far as the music goes very nice as well lol
for me definitely zukerman the best. vangerov and zukerman on viola. power is kicking too :)
@josesolismusic Also, modern instruments simply project much better than older ones
These recordings are a bit too quiet for my laptop. Still great music though! Vengerov & Power rule!
Did anyone else notice the cellist playing underhanded in the first few seconds?!
7:38
OMG! i never heared about laurence power O.o the interpretation of the power´s symphony is better than yuri bashmet O.o
personally, I like the viola better than the violin. No, it's not beacuse i play the viola... I don't. I play the clarinet.
Did they smoke pot before playing?
I can play this on the cello
@MasterK1ller123 wayyyy too hard for u
@helenagothicangel13 I agree with you 100%, however, both these guys look absolutely ridiculous when they play.
what men, what master, what problem?
Say what!, read the rants below.
@windstorm1000 Back in the day there were practically no viola masters. Also, viola doesn't project well against an orchestra. Even in this concerto the violist is supposed to tune all of his strings up a half-step for extra projection
Horn fail at 1:17
@SGH28N Why don't you just pay attention to the hot chicks in the orchestra instead then
Vengerov is looking a little stupid maybe to someone when he plays, i think he is cool.
And a hell of a violinist. Viola player is excellent technically, but I think Vengerov needs Bashmet. This violist is just not crazy enough. Sorry for criticizm.
Maxim..Would you marrie me???
the first note is not together :s
They look like they did when they were kids on their imaginary instruments :)
Great playing, but unfortunately it appears to be a battle of who looks the corniest when they play. And the winner is ... a draw.
No idea what this means, but in any case it's not a song!
@McSplat maybe he has a rich daddy :)
Awesome!!! except .... the orchestra
hrmm...first note not so good..but brilliant anyways!
version with violist Robert Kabara is better..
This is overacted. On my opinion, they exagerate their facial expresions. A serious violonist like Perlman would never do such theatrical show.
Zu langsam
less dissonancess play this song and others better; no offense
Vengerov, stop being a clown and focus on the music.. poor performance
It's not a song!
