I had the same dilemma with my son wanting expensive comics when we went food shopping, I felt bad saying no but it was such a waste of money and we found that the local library had them so he got to read them there for free and save his pocket money for something else. Teaching our children not to waste money is a much more valuable thing than the short term pleasure they'd get from a bacon sandwich or an overpriced comic! You're doing great and I'm sure your son appreciates all that you do for him 😊
I had to say 'no' to my kids at that age as I had no money being on a very low income- they are now 41 and 38. They both know how to cook, mend and budget. Neither even have an overdraft - let alone a loan or credit card. It feels awful at the time but saying 'no' proves its worth over time! Keep at it Lizzie!
My son works at Costa part time and even he won't pay their prices it's a rip off. I make him a bacon sarnie before he goes to work. Tell your son buy the ingredients and perfect the ultimate bacon sarnie. It'll be a challenge for him. He'll never go back to buying them .
Great job!! Good for you. You should be very proud of yourself, and definitely saying NO will not hurt him. Actually, and I truly do not mean to criticize, now that you are making more money and treating him all the time he may think that you can spend more when you have extra, instead of saving for when you don’t have enough. There isn’t a manual for what to do and each of us is doing the best that we can. Hugs
Nice assortment of items. Enjoy. Be proud that you can offer your son home made versions of fast food...much healthier I’m sure, and it will be good training for when he gets older. Maybe even help him set up a budget for his spending money starting with a bit for “long-term” savings...You are doing a great job. Susan
You've taught him plenty, please don't ever doubt that. I suspect it's partly to do with his age - growth spurts coming up and wanting to eat what it seems all his peers are eating.
You shouldn’t feel guilty because you’re teaching your son life lessons---making things at home is a VERY good thing to know how to do, plus it leaves money left over for other things. That food pantry is a wonderful idea--open to all and keeping food out of the landfills. You got way more than your £5 worth!!! I wish we had those, but we don’t have anything like that where I live--we just have food banks which are free, based on need. It’s funny to hear you mention Popeye’s being in Cardiff because I live in south Louisiana, USA--near New Orleans--not far from where Popeye’s was created by a man named Al Copeland, who came from very humble circumstances, and Popeye’s has been a mainstay with dozens of locations in this area since the 1970’s. (He named it Popeye’s after Popeye Doyle in the movie The French Connection, which had come out a year before, not after the cartoon character.) I LOVE Popeye’s biscuits--what you would probably call scones. Here they are light, flaky, and VERY buttery. I hope they’re just as good on your side of the pond!!!
