I recently retrieved my NC-98 with matching speaker from storage. I am coming up on retirement in a few months and look forward to putting up some antennas and using the old rig. I'll be living in Virginia after I retire and hope to find some local shop or ham who can give it a tune up. My Grandmother was a solderer for National Radio in Melrose Massachusetts when I was a kid, about the time these radios were being made so I'll never get rid of it.
Looking forward to getting my all original, but a little worse for wear NC-98 in similar working order. When I was much younger, I didn’t respect the caps and blew one up. BANG! Freaked me out, but I’ve always really liked the set, so I shelved it. Now, 25 years later, I think I’m finally at a good place to get it back in good nick. Question: is it possible to perform the alignment without a modulated signal? I have 2 fairly modern function generators and an excellent oscilloscope, but nothing than can produce AM output (no DDS fn gen). Will I need to build a modulator circuit in order to get good alignment results? Thanks.
