The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary's mission is to provide a self-sustaining African carnivore sanctuary for the purposes of wild species preservation through education, awareness and funding, especially pertaining to the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade.
To raise awareness, Kevin has now set up his UA-cam Channel 'LionWhispererTV'. The channel is all about raising awareness about not only the declining numbers of lions, but also how this rapid decrease is happening. By watching these videos, you are directly contributing to our scheme of land acquisition.
Kevin captures the majority of his footage on GoPro cameras, allowing the viewer to get as close as possible to the lions.
By doing this, Kevin hopes to give people an insight into the lives of these beautiful creatures and to let them see just what they can do to help. You can nearly touch them.

When humans get attacked by sharks in the ocean it's a no brainier. So these incidents are the same; if you go into environments that have a risk factor people are responsible for the situations they put themselves in 9xs out of 10. Wish I could nuzzle up next to a Big cat one day.

That exactly it... to them ... he is one of them. They would protect him with their lives if they thought they had to. They don’t think of him as a human... but even for him he always has to be on his guard. He because he is one of them has to go by Lion Society rules. He also has to do all the safety rules even with them. Never turn your back... never make them think you are staring at them in the eyes and NEVER EVER RUN. It’s very much the same with the domestic version. If you know what to look for in cat language you’ll find it’s very much the same. Size is the difference and especially the Big Cats know this. If these were any other Lions... he couldn’t do this with them. By having the scent of these Lions on him... to any other Prides IT WOULD BE WAR. They would kill him.

    • @TheCatzMeowMix
      @TheCatzMeowMix 5 років тому +70

      lps_ nyghtsky ...
Noooooo you NEVER run... they see you as prey. Lions run at 35 miles an hour ... only for short distances... but a human doesn’t stand a chance. If they start attacking someone... they’re done unfortunately. You never look them in the eyes directly... especially the males. They look it as a direct challenge to their authority. All you can do is hope it’s a mock charge... watch their body language... but with that you have to know what to look for. Lions go for the throat or can go for the back of your neck. Lions like Serval are a lot BIGGER than you see them on TV. Their roar is heard 5 miles around by humans and 30 miles around by other Lions. Even the females are bigger than they look. You don’t show fear... you can also die for that.
I visit the Lion Habitat Ranch once a year... and know one of the keepers there. These are the MGM Lions that we’re at the MGM Grand hotel in Vegas. There is a video of one of the new keepers when they were still there. The new keeper showed too much fear and was attacked by the male for it. Bentley bit his leg and got him cornered. Marina got in between them and saved the keepers life. Bentley had every right to kill Marina for getting in his way. This is a Challenge to Bentley’s authority. The keeper that was not attacked is the one I know.
When there is a Domestic Cat colony... the rules of both their Societies are almost identical.
I asked John about if they ever got in fights at the Lion Habitat Ranch... they use fire extinguishers if that were to happen. Just like Kevin is with these Lions here... John can’t do this with Kevin’s Lions and the other way around. They see John as a member of their Prides too. It would be WAR as to them... they are Lions of separate Pride. It would be too dangerous. You will see a lot of the same behavior in Lions and Domestic Cat. The big difference here is SIZE.
There’s another video to look at where a calico challenges a female Lion. It’s Funny. As I say.... SIZE is the difference here. Keep in mind they are much bigger in person. One more video on here... cats in a house with a taxidermy Bobcat. ITS HILARIOUS!!!!!

Jr_cdn Rockers ... They do get along...but keep in mind that Lion claws are an inch long. This is the Lions version of Domestic Cat scratches in play or affection. If they really wanted to scratch him if he annoyed one of them... they would. They would discipline him like any other Lion in the Pride. They wouldn’t be thing about the difference in size... or species.

I work with domestic animals for a living, and I was just thinking how ignorant so many people are to common animal body language cues indicating potentially dangerous situations. If they're so clueless about the species we normally live with, I'm not surprised by the lion incident. Beside the fact that whenever I hear these kinds of stories, it always seems to involve someone thinking a wild animal's behavior is predictable, ( as in all the people who believe they can approach them closely for photographs ).

Example at Bondi beach sydney Australia there are clear signs written in multiple languages. Stating the dangers of rips and to swim between the flags. Do you think people listen to that nope the lifeguards pull 100s of people out of rips even twice because people don't listen.

@Jackercol To keep these animals as pets is just inhumane. Firstly, the Lions that you buy commercially have had their Mothers killed and been taken as cubs to be reared in captivity. Secondly, they are NOT pets , they are large, immensely powerful, pack animals. This guy doesn't look on his Lions as pets. He merely gives them a place to exist in relative safety and security. He has said on many occasions that the Lions ALLOW him to share their space and company and that he never makes the mistake of losing their trust. He's been quite badly bitten in the past when he HAS let his guard down and openly admits that the Lions were teaching him a lesson and reminding him who is top pf the food chain in this relationship.

I knew a park ranger that use to work in Yellowstone. He told me that he had to stop a man from trying to go through the bushes to a wild moose, because he wanted to put his toddler aged daughter on it's back to take a picture (I have tons of stories, and yes, some people try to do these dangerous things! And people from all over the world visit these national parks) It's good he was there to stop that man, because something tragic would have probably happened. The signs and warnings are there for everyone's protection, people and animals, and when people ignore those rules, sometimes bad things happen. I feel bad that the lady lost her life, but it could have been 100% completely avoided by following park rules and regulations. It's not the animals fault for being what it is... an apex predator protecting its territory and possibly (since it was a female) it's cubs.

Trophy hunting really has no effect on animal populations. I've never hunted but it's worth researching. A massive amount of money for wildlife conservation is raised every year through auctioning off big game tags for trophy hunting. A single rhino cost at least 300,000 USD which in turn goes back into the conservation of rhinos. The numbers of tags are also strictly controlled. Poaching has by far the greatest negative impact as it isn't easily preventable even with guards protecting the animals. Also trophy animals can come from private big cat breeders although I agree that it should be illegal to raise big cats for hunting, they should hunt off the ones they already have and stop there as it's not like they can find them good homes or release them.

I feel it’s also super important for people who visit any wildlife/big cat/animal sanctuary after seeing multiple YT videos about them understand that there is a HUGE difference in the way these big cats or other animals act with their main ‘person/carers’, and how they will act/react to strangers. The big cats at your sanctuary see you as their person, their carer, their dad. They love you!! It wasn’t until I saw a vlog about an Australian couple who visited your sanctuary that I realised there is a HUGE difference!! Please don’t ever stop making these videos - they are so important for the world to see and learn from!! ❤️🇦🇺🧩🐨🐾😻

Kevin Richardson is not a tourist and this is not his first visit with this animal as a voyeur. His interactions with lions are unique and does not advocate for tourists to think of lions as "house cats". Kevin understands fully his own risks in interacting with wildlife. He's spent years in the field with specific groups of lions to understand their behavior and become acclimated. Tourism is not a free pass.

Over millions of years lions evolved to be killing machines that preside over territory and hunt their food by puncturing and crushing bones and suffocation. They are beautiful animals, inspiring respect in the human psyche and the source of myth and legend. Our hearts go out to the family of the poor soul who misjudged the situation.
