    Hey Steven, great lesson as always! I have a question. Do you think that the height of the backswing should also follow the height of the ball?

      Typically a higher bouncing ball means a slower ball so I’d generally take a bigger backswing... bigger meaning more shoulder extension and thus higher... my general guideline is different size backswings based on how fast the ball in coming for ex. a short backswing for fast balls, a medium, and a bigger backswing for slower balls. To ans your question IMO it depends bc for a moderately low/soft slice players still can take a big backswing, thus the racquet in the backswing is much higher than the ball. But if you watched the “don’t take the racquet back early” vid, I believe the unit turn and set position is higher or lower based on the height of the ball, mainly due to how much bend at the hips occur to maintain good posture for higher or lower balls in the strike zone. Think golf.. putting there’s a sharper tilt forward than a hitting a driver. So I don’t think the backswing is smaller on lower balls per say, but the tilt forward at the hips makes it look like the racquet doesn’t some up as high. Kinda an optical illusion. Sorry, long winded but I agree with you in most scenarios.

    Great detailed lesson as always! Thank you for the VDO. If you dont mind me asking, do you have degree specialized in teaching or sport medicine or something like that? I ve never seen any tennis coach explain like you before. And I ve watched so many lesson online. In your lesson everything is connected, logical, and make a lot of sense. Keep up!

    I tried this and it changed my whole game overnight! I had all the right things going on with the unit turn, using legs, take back, technique, etc. but I always had zero confidence in my forehand. Rhythm was the missing piece and also something to note whether your counting or saying up down up it forces you to look at the ball more. To add as well on the last "up" after seeing your other video I exhale and it really helped me relax on my shots. Like you mentioned I realized in long rallies I would hold my breath and get tense. Thank you for the tips its really been a game changer for me my hitting partner asked if i took a private lesson in the last week LOL.

      Awesome that this concept helped! Works for a lot of my students but don’t see the pros following these guidelines as strictly. Will later talk about playing “off” rhythm to add variation when you attack.

      Nice comment. I'm having a TERRIBLE time tracking the ball, I'd say I lose it a good 2-3 metres out! I've tried the time-tested "Bounce-Hit" and even seen drills where you raise and lower your whole body with the bounce of the ball, which doesn't work for me as I am a wheelchair player (we're kinda stuck at the one height). But with this drill, I can use my racket hand to follow the ball. I *LIKE!* I can't wait to try it - God willing, it will force me, as you say, to pay more attention to the ball in those critical last few feet, not to mention smoothing out my rhythm and slowing down my stroke (vs. waiting to long to prepare and then whipping a chicken arm through the stroke).     Amazing that in my last few years of watching UA-cam tennis lessons from all over and you were the first one to discuss dancing with tennis. Although I’m not much for dancing I have felt the connection to playing my best tennis and flowing much like a dance. The sound of the ball, rhythm..it all starts to groove.

    i am a piano major. The way I play looks pretty good, but the consistency is not....that well:)) I was thinking so hard to fix it. I feel it is something about the sense of ball. Yes! To be clear, you are right!!!It is the rhythm.None of my coaches points it out like you. There is so many similarity between piano and tennis. Thank you! Your video definitely help!!!

      Depends how strong you are.. some of the younger kids are using 8 but you probably don’t need more than 12. It’s more about getting the flow of the push

    I know from experience that playing tennis doesnt need to be too technical and you learn technique better using drills and repetition however your content are really informative ,refreshing and stands apart from all the other tennis instructional vids in youtube.... still everyone who watches this videos should take them with a grain of salt.. learning is still more effective with a coach who knows your deficiency and monitors your progress.... thanks and keep up with the videos

    The concept you are searching for is centrifugal force - that's how you maximize speed, acceleration and power at the tip (racket head) with minimal rhythmic effort

    Put a dampener in your racket. The hum of the undampened racket is cringe worthy. My arm literally hurts when I hear it.
