- A sign posted by a business owner in Clifton, New Jersey, has sparked a lot of outrage, with some calling the message racist; CBS2's Cory James reports.
I didn't know the English language was a race. If you are going live in a country, learn the language and the culture.
@@Ty2Tito No one is forcing anyone to speak English. It's common sense if you move to a nation to learn their language. If I moved to China I would learn Chinese, I wouldn't complain about it and say they were forcing me too. Also, race and language aren't the same, how is asking a customer to speak your language because you don't understand more than one language racist. Europe is white and has many many languages besides English.

I used to live in Van Nuys, California, and there were many businesses that would answer the phone in Spanish. I would ask a question about the price of the product they were selling (bottled water, for one example), and they would just say, "No English." I would do my best to speak to them in Spanish and they would literally say that nobody in their business spoke English. They literally have a neighborhood with enough Spanish-speaking customers that they don't need any English speaking customers at all, and don't even try to speak English. Also in California, I have asked a question of a person with a Target or Wal-mart vest on, asking them in what section of the store I could find a product. I could see in their eyes that they didn't understand a word. In a minute, another employee would swoop in and ask what I needed help with, to let the other employee off the hook. These things were very surprising to me.
It’s kind of like when on occasion I’ll get a non English speaking uber/lyft driver. They get upset when you ask questions or try to answer theirs and you can’t speak their language. It’s frustrating. GPS isn’t always exact and I have to explain directions to my house or the app will bring us way on the other side of a very large condo complex. I totally understand where this man is coming from. It’s not racism , not even close.

If he really cared and was being genuine he'd learn some key Spanish phrases to better serve his customers and have better customer service. If he cared he would not put himself in a situation like this where he can grandstand his racism.
I’m a Filipino, born in this country my parents are immigrants came here in 1960 they speak English very well no accent. They learned how to speak English If you live in this country you speak English plain and simple. If I lived Spain I speak Spanish if I This man is not a racist. Immigrants who learn english earn more money and are more successful. I don't get why some people move to the US and refuse to learn english, when it is only beneficial to do so.

He’s NOT saying he won’t help you if you don’t speak English, he’s saying it will cost more because of the extra time he has to put in due to the language barrier. I think that’s fair and so long as he applies the policy across the board, it’s not racist. He tried for ten whole damn minutes to help someone out, that’s about 8 minutes more than I would have.

This is not racism. He’s not denying attending to the non-English speaking customers, he’s just charging extra for the hassle and his time (which he could otherwise use for production). Why throw the racism card? If people come to America, then speak English. Some people don’t even try.
One more thing, he’s sign wasn’t like “if you speak Spanish/Chinese/Japanese/Korean or whatever, $10 extra”. To be racism, it has to have a targeted RACE and belief of its inferiority/superiority.

You can't charge more just because a customer doesn't speak english. This is why all government entities at all levels offers ways to communicate,even private corporations spend millions of dollars to access a market that doesn't speak english as well. Common sense people.

It’s his business. He can put whatever sign up he wants. It’s the same message as “management reserves the right”. He’s just being more direct. If you’re offended, get over it. No ones forcing you to go to his shop.
As a hotel veteran, I can attest that most hotel chains now prevent franchise hotels owners from presenting that sign. The only time you will see a sign that says something like "we reserve the right to refuse service..." will be in a small private, non-franchise business.
Why do I have to press #1 to speak English when I call a state office or other places in the USA?

Agree, I came to this country not knowing a single word in English , I enrolled in ESL classes for three years , don’t speak a perfect English , but never needed someone to translate . I’m proud of my self. My sons are proud of me , and wander why there are so many people that live in this country for 30 long years and don’t know how to speak English

We have I Phones and computers to translate languages. Why not use technology to translate 🤔 I see people use there I Phones to translate languages. This isn't the 18th 19th centuries
I'm Dominican and I don't consider his action rasict, it isn't like he denied service or threw them out of the store for being a specific race, he just got angry with the situation. A situation that took more time and revenue out of his time and patience.

I'm a business owner, I try to learn all my customers' language, because they are my Kings and Queens. If they teach me their language, I pay them $10 for 10 minutes. Idiots don't learn other people's language. English was/is foreign language in USA.

I'm a Latino and I understand his frustration and I don't believe he's racist. English is my primary language and i'm just ok at speaking spanish and even I get frustrated when I have to deal with only spanish speaking customers as I don't understand everything they are saying.

He speaks English just fine, you are confusing the written word with the spoken. Even as little as 100 years ago many native English speakers could not read or write their own language. According to you that means they don't know English. Some languages don't even have a written form. If you read the sign out loud the English is just fine. Another interesting note is that before the advent of the dictionary, the English language had no standardized spelling, and people were free to write as they please. Read any of the founders' documents for example and tell me they don't know English. I'd wager that most contemporary words were actually spelled differently at different times throughout history, despite being spoken the same.
Also every phone has a free translator from google...just saying.

If you migrate to any non English speaking country you better believe that you will have to learn their language. In many countries it’s a cultural insult not to know the language. Get the vet it. The Parents would bring their older children to speak for them because they didn’t speak English and couldn’t fill out the paper work. Race and language are not the same thing. Everyone is taking this as antihispanic because Spanish is the second language of the USA. The same would apply to a Russian who spoke no English, also their are fully white Hispanics. So to say this is racist makes literally no sense.

I’ve seen people live in America for years and can’t speak a bit of English and this old man has work to do and can’t spend all day trying to figure out what someone is trying to say . Bring a interpreter if you can’t speak the local language. I do when I go to other countries at least a dictionary or something. He probably was trying to be funny or wanted to be paid for his time.

Why is it always a white person?
There’s an old joke: If someone speaks three languages they’re called tri-lingual. If someone speaks two languages they’re called bi-lingual. If someone only speaks one language, you call them an American! This is just a simple guy with a simple business in New Jersey who got frustrated when he couldn’t understand a potential customer. All the Spanish guy had to do was come back with one of his kids or a friend to translate. Only on the internet would this become a big deal.
Now a day there are literally thousands of apps you can use to translate what you're trying to express, it can even read it out loud while you type. I don't understand why people don't take advantage of modern technology for their own benefit.

WE DO THAT TO THESE SAME FOREIGNERS IN AMERICA AND THEY.WHINE AMD CRY AND WE AS AMERICANS AND THE CONSTITUTION PROTECTS THEM FROM GETTING WHAT THEY DESERVE AND NOT FORCING THEM TO LEARN AND SPEAK THE #1 LANGUAGE SPOKE IN AMERICA AND DRESS LIKE AMERICANS...AND STAND AND PLEDGE ALEAGENCE TO THE FLAG FOR WHICH IT STANDS ...IVE SEEN TO MANY GOOD PEOPLE LOOSE THEIR JOBS BECAUSE SOME SCHOOLS ARE NOW FLOODED WITH HISPANIC KIDS WHO CAN'T SPEAK A LICK OF ENGLISH, SO GOOD TEACHER GET LET GO AND REPLACED WITH A TEACHERS AID WHO SPEAKS MOSTLY SPANISH...AMD TEACH SPANISH HISTORY AMD CELEBRATES SPANISH CULTURE....NOT GOOD AT ALL BUT ITS TOO LATE THEY ARE HERE AND WONT MAKE THE EFFORT TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE...
