Man this brings back childhood memories of the 80s. My father started off with a 2 door and later owned two 4 doors. All were 4 cylinder, stick shift and no AC. And those garbage cans were the exact reason he kept buying them! I’m in my mid 40s now and my brothers and I still laugh about his obsession with having a vehicle that could carry those garbage cans. And our Connecticut road salt ate them up like a light snack!
Troopers are the best! I have a friend that has an old one, no rust. Engine is blown 😬 Might dive in and make it a project. Restore to its original beauty.

Just a little note for home mechanics. When Andrew replaced the locking wheel hub he mention that there were a couple of phillips screws. They're actually JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). They are very similar but have much steeper angle on the point. Using a phillips driver will work but not properly and will eventually damage the screw. However, using a JIS will work fine in a philips head. If you run lots of Japanese made vehicles, a set of JIS drivers is indespensible.
@@AndrewCamarata At least on japanese motorcycle carb screws, there is a dot punched on the face between two sides of the cross shape. You'll enjoy having the JIS set and not stripping them any more! The bits fit very tightly.
These videos are always fun, especially if you work of them to get them to your standard…but I do miss your working at a job videos. I can’t think of a rusted car that I’ve seen living in East Tennessee, other then a pickup body that had some rust on the body due to crushes, beds etc.

the rebar frame fix killed it ,man what a great home brew fix, going to drag out my welder and going on a rebar hunt,I live on west coast and lots o salted roads, thanks 4 the fix for my truck ( MY BUDDIES THANK YA TOO )
I always liked these. They're called a Holden Jackaroo here in Australia. A lot had the C233T or 4JB1-t turbo diesel. I haven't seen a 1st gen like this on the road for 5+ years but you still see plenty of 2nd gens getting around.
@@boatbeard7767 Yeah it's funny, things rust pretty bad where I am from. We never see frame rot like Camarata's rebar special but those old ones sitting in the bush would have the door falling off them after 10 years. Early Jackaroos had problems with breaking gearboxes but they upgraded the gearbox in the later ones (same gearbox family as a Toyota Hilux Turbo or V6).
Also had one and loved it. Rusted rear 1/3 door and undercarriage but we wheeled that thing all over overgrown BC logging roads. It could not be stopped with the right tires. Would have another (rust free version) anytime.

I love those old Isuzu's! I just sold my 1995 4Runner which I kick myself every single damn day that I sold it. One of the toughest vehicles made, right along with these. All about the same kind of engineering as well. The key is 6 Lug wheels and Large Hubs. Unbeatable!

You sit a lot lower inside a Cherokee, they are a great truck but you sit low in the seat when compared to an old Range Rover, pre TJ "Tub" Jeep, Trooper or older land cruiser (I don't know the model numbers of them). I love my Jeeps but they are a little awkward when seriously offroading.

They were originally made for Australia, HOLDEN JACKAROO made by ISUZU, primarily built in Japan for Australian conditions that's why they are so tough. They were shared around the world under different names with an ISUZU badge.
Famous in Ireland. Also the pajero land cruiser and amazon and Daihatsu fourtrak. I don't Think the trooper were that popular in the UK or elsewhere in Europe. It's odd how Ireland seemed to like all them things. Same for fiat tractors/valmet/SAME/ Lamborghini. We had them all before most other European countries

I remember learning how to drive a manual transmission as a teenager. I’m 42 and hadn’t driven one in 10 years and this past week drove one without having to even think about it. It’s something you should know.
That thing is sick! You're a man after my own heart. I'd buy a southern 80-90s vehicle over a new one any day of the week. If it ain't rusted out and parts are available it can be made to run indefinitely.
Nice Trooper Andrew. I still drive my 97 Dodge Intrepid...still runs great at 25 years and 185,000 miles. Excellent points about visibility, and the driver/passenger wing vents. Modern autos' visibility is horrible, you may as well be driving a WWII halftrack all buttoned up, looking through a slit. The wing vents were a fantastic, practical, simple feature; 'course we couldn't keep that. Had to sacrifice them for dozens of electronic do-dads that are destined to fail.
Well, they're expensive. I had one broken by a radio-thief. It turned out that the replacement cost three or four times as much as a regular side window. And installation was double.

In Denmark you'd get a sentence for just bringing it on the road... In US? Well, doors still close fine - what's the problem???
You get the rules you vote in. Where I live to build a house they just want you to perk test for the sewer and after that it's all on you. No rules after that. On vehicles they just make sure the vin reads right and your good. I love where I live. I can walk out the back door and go shooting if I want or fishing in the river any time of the day and just try not to make a mess and your good.

this was one of the best videos yet, repairs, new stuff, the dogs, had a little of everything.
Absolutely love the video, Where you took us and everything else that you did in the dogs they were hilarious, You have a good woman there that shares in what you do, Treasure her
I never really appreciated how beautiful upstate New York is before I found this channel.
Fellow New Yorker (upstate) I picked up a 1990 Carolina Trooper in 2022. I started collecting media this month. I love this thing! Thanks for the video.
Thank you, I just ordered 2 sets. How can you tell if a screw is JIS? Is that on anything from Japan?
@@AndrewCamarata Most JIS screws will have a little dot punched in to the screw. Its on the face.
@@AndrewCamarata At least on japanese motorcycle carb screws, there is a dot punched on the face between two sides of the cross shape. You'll enjoy having the JIS set and not stripping them any more! The bits fit very tightly.
Also, using a manual impact screwdriver the first time removing those screws helps. They can be pretty tight.
These videos are always fun, especially if you work of them to get them to your standard…but I do miss your working at a job videos. I can’t think of a rusted car that I’ve seen living in East Tennessee, other then a pickup body that had some rust on the body due to crushes, beds etc.
Excellent dude, and Sam is an absolute gem, very noticeable uptick on camera and video work. We find it hilarious how you had to instruct Sam on how to drive a stick shift and she was remarkably adept.

Your girlfriend is awesome. She is always up for anything. Great watching you two have so much fun. You are right about that Trooper too. Solid machine.
My family got an 80’s trooper 20 years ago. One of us crashed it like five times and you couldn’t tell. Top speed 55 and it began to shake shudder and shimmy so hard we were afraid to go any faster. Outstanding fun! One of the best vehicles we ever got.❤
I had a feeling he’d buy one of these since he raved about his old ones. Just don’t let it rust out 😃

I always liked these. They're called a Holden Jackaroo here in Australia. A lot had the C233T or 4JB1-t turbo diesel. I haven't seen a 1st gen like this on the road for 5+ years but you still see plenty of 2nd gens getting around.
I have c223t
They coped well with Oz, rust was the issue for most of them in the end...

AC could buy any vehicle he wants, but you can see he really loves that Trooper🚗
Andrew just single handedly drove the market price up on used Isuzu Troopers.

I love those old Isuzu's! I just sold my 1995 4Runner which I kick myself every single damn day that I sold it. One of the toughest vehicles made, right along with these. All about the same kind of engineering as well. The key is 6 Lug wheels and Large Hubs. Unbeatable!
Always did like these troopers.
Also, can we take a minute to appreciate the amount of work and time it takes to put these videos together? Especially one that's a hour and a half!!
The visibility out of SUVs back in the eighties was great. My 1988 Jeep Cherokee had that same kind of visibility.
Jeep Cherokees kept the same body style up until 2001 when they stopped making them. I have a 1999, Phoenix, AZ original. Not one spot of rust on it.
Andrew does nothing easy , even when he lights a fire ! go big or go home ! And getting ready for the season change , Nice ride, trees are beautiful ! great video !
Can't beat those Troopers when there in 4x4 mode in the mountains better than any Jeep on the market! Great find Andrew loving the content and good to see you guy's uploading another video!

I have a 91 trooper very similar to your 88. Unfortionately, it has significant rust but it is kept for summer use at my Maine house. It is still very functional and reliable. Miles are over 200 K.
What can I say, I feel blessed to have it and only change oil about every 5 months or so...I do not drive it that much. Same engine and same transmission, so this Intrepid was well built. 3.5 litter V-6. You and your friend are so patient...nice fix on the parking brake.
