During the early 70’s I worked as a detail drafter at the Big C in Illinois. Worked for the 988B section. I had no idea how lucky I was to have this opportunity. I was paid the same wages as the guys in my section. This huge wheel loader was only eclipsed by the 992 also built in Aurora. Thanks for showing me how resilient this machine is in 2021. As a 71 year old grandma I am thrilled to see the 988B still in action.
I worked as a sub contractor in a lime stone quarry, we had a 988B 50W serial number, we kept on hand to build haul roads. At one point, the quarry had bought three new 988F's and all had transmission issues, and they would borrow our B model during repairs. One time, their operator returned our machine and said " I have to downshift into first gear to climb that hill, this thing went right up it in third." She was a beast. We never had to remove the cab to haul ours, we hauled it on a rail, maybe they used a low-boy.
I worked in Aurora myself. At one time or another I welded every different component to make this machine. Bucket, lift arm, Engine Frame, Non engine frame. Also welded 990 992 and 994
Just a quick observation Andrew and very important: This tapered style pins with conical bushings at their end for the 988B and 992C, need to be press fitted with a 50 TON force hydraulic press prior to installing the center bolts. This is for pressing and locking the cones good against the pins and the machinined holes. And all should be very clean and without any grease or oil on them. If you only tighten them with the center bolts, they will get loose and damage the pins, bushings and the machined surfaces. Also the center bolts need to be torqued with a reduction torque multipier to CAT specs.Very important on this big loaders as they develop a very big stress on all the pivot joints. This is applicable to all pivot points of the loader linkage. Also, on the lower pins that attach to the bucket, if you installed new pins, they should be filled with oil through the holes provided on the edges of the pins, removing the plugs and installing a special lubrication fitting. These bottom pins are the only oil lubricated and maintenance free. All the rest of the linkage have grease fittings.

I’ve never been so invested in a channel. This sort of thing fascinates me. I love the work Andrew has been doing. Especially on his house and property. I don’t even live this lifestyle. I’m a total city girl but would love to live like this. Idk why.
I agree there is a fascination with his lifestyle. But he doesnt heat his castle in the winter. I understands he heats his bathroom/shower. Not sure about his bedroom. All the smoke from fixing/running/painting the machinery in his castle goes straight up to his living quarters. He and his dogs get pretty dirty. Its not as pristine as you think. The dogs jump into the front seats of his vehicles all the time with dirty feet. Ive never seen him soap them down so their dirt stays outside. Lots of long hours of dedication. There is recreation, but there is more work than play.
Have this EXACT same loader at my work. 1986 cat 988B with 32,968 hours on the clock and we have owned it for 15 years. Very good machine just doesn’t do anything very fast but can move ALOT of material with the right guy sitting in the seat. The caliber of your videos Andrew grows by the day, I remember watching you when you had a fraction of what you have today. Very impressive.
I can still remember the excitement I felt as a 26 year old operator, removing the plastic off of the seat of the brand new 988B that the company I worked for had purchased. The look on your face probably resembles the one on my face that day. Congratulations on your purchase, and enjoy the power.
It takes a good operator to run a 988 without spinning the wheels. It looked like the guy running was having difficulty at first. You have to crowd the bucket as soon as you hit the pile to create downforce on the tires so they don't spin. It was pretty muddy, so that may have something to do with it. Also, the wheel loader with a steering wheel and transmission neutralizer pedal is a little harder to load than the newer ones that have a variable torque converter that lets you vary the wheel torque from 100% down to 25% with the left pedal, while providing more hydraulic power to the boom and bucket. Also, with the 988F, the steering wheel changed to a Stic steer on the left arm rest with pushbutton gearshift on the Stick control. But a ton of work can be done with this wheel loader. I can't wait to see what Andrew buys next. Its so fun.
Them rear tires were too bold on it maybe that is why was spinning so much.. Andrew might need to replace those as well specially if he is going to keep this new toy a few years.. Otherwise i fully agree, the progress is fantastic i can't wait to see more..
..speaking of spinning wheels, I noticed right away the rear tires on this beast were Wayyy beyond bald, toast actually...I'd hate to have to pay someone to change those tires, much less buy them!... :0
Nice to see different pieces of equipment tackling the same project to see the difference on how effective they are. Also nice to see you stop a project to do maintenance instead of powering on through.
Man that opening shot...heavy machinery heaven there EDIT: Huh 48:22 I honestly didn't think the ends of the containers making up the castle could open anymore, figured they'd be welded shut. Also considering how much I spend on gas just for my car, I shudder to think what your fuel bill is for running all this awesome machinery
The man bought 2 heavy machines in one video, both worth 40-70k... I think the tire change for the one wheel loader was more expensive than fuel for these machines
When I see 1 hour plus videos on other channels I follow I figure I can get through them in a few days. When I see a 1 plus hour video on Andrew's channel I go get the popcorn and relax. Truly enjoy every bit on content he shares. Thanks sir!
Brought back some good memories operating Cat 988B & 980 back in the eighties over here in Australia. I notice in some of the comments from workers in the factory at Aurora and you can be proud of the machines you turned out as I believe they set the standard for the rest of the world. I was always happy to operate a Cat!
I hope you read this, could save you a ton of money, years ago I worked for Foley Caterpillar in Wichita and had to go out on a field repair on a 988, it was custom specced with a truck torque converter and maybe a different transmission for loading stock piles, they later were trying to dig with it and burned up the tranny. Check your serial number and make sure this isn't the case with your loader before you break something very very expensive.
I love how there's no gentle break in period for a machine Andrew gets, it's straight down to beating the hell out of it 😂 Not in a bad way, machines are made to work.
I remember when your green Cat seemed pretty huge. But you out-beasted it by a few. But I guess the new storage/garage expanded twice during the project…
Right! I was thinking that earlier watching this. That green cat seemed like a monster, and then seeing it next to the stuff he has lately, it seem's like yard equipment. Still puts in the work tho, glad he took it out on this job!
YES YES YES - 1 hour and 20 minutes of pure joy. And I havnt even started watching it yet. :) The clip in the B-list was awesome - Ive watched it like 10 times already. I hope this is just as good
With all the equipment that you are acquiring Andrew, you should start looking for a portable rock crusher and dirt screen. Start crushing the boulders into gravel and use the materials for road beds.
"We are on this job today, were we are going to move half a mountain!" haha, I can hear this in my mind now for a long time, and you are safe as always, Cody, the lab safetyspector is there watching you guys every move! :D
And I'm completely excited two videos in one day I was enjoyed to see what you're up to see what kind of equipment you're working on or using enjoy your videos very much
I had a "68" Pierson "motor yacht" when I was living in Barnegat , N.J. It had 2 monel tanks that were totally loaded up,with algae/crud, usually when I got into some serious wakes in the inlet near the lighthouse was when I got into trouble. I can't begin to tell you what tell you what I did with them after I got them out of the boat, but they still managed to load up (2) huge inline filters in any rough surf. I finally found a truck repair place over by Great Adventure in the pines. They cut the ends out of the round tanks and did what they had to do and sealed them back up. I replaced the fuel lines and filters for the last time on that project. Good to see that you are back rocking it!beginbegin
Andrew: " I'm going to buy two things. ill be right back. " And almost 100 tons of equepment incoming to the property. fcking hell thats impressive man!
What a machine. I drove one of them on a opencast once . What a powerful machine. On rubber too. It operates like its on track .. you can feel the awesome power when you drive it... I loved the one I operated. Have good fun on it Andrew and be safe
20:00 Now you can clearly see that it would be nice to replace the tires with a different type of terrain, with a deeper tread. Besides, great material and a lot of enthusiasm for work. Greetings from Poland.
Just viewed (in awe) the revamp on your trucks springs....OMG, you are the rebirth of HS boys in their late teens working on their cars and pickups within their car clubs back in the 50’s. Always had 4-5 working on cars in the driveway with their club jackets layed out on the grass. Where have all the young men gone. Where has the close companionship gone. What ever happened to auto shop as a class in high school. Thanks for bringing back a blessed time to my aging time through video. 👍💕
Beautiful, just beautiful. A man with intelligence, using both his skill and enthusiasm to creatively make a living and enjoy sharing it with others. The world does have hope.
You really kick the shit out of your equipment. So it’s a pretty good testament on how proper maintenance keeps these units running and working properly. Great to watch!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻
I really enjoy these longer videos, it was a blast to watch this series and I cant wait for your next installment with the drill that looked like it was going to be a good video. Keep up the great content we will be watching.

A guy named 'Dark' stole your comment to redirect people to his channel and get subscribers. He does this by buying verified (with checkmark) accounts which causes his comment to flow to the top of the comment section even an when he was an hour later. You will see channels with generic names doing this in the comment section of all the big channels. Buy verified channel> steal comments > get to the top of comment section because verified > get likes > people check the channel out because verified > grow channel > sell channel with hundreds of thousands subs.

Title is a massive understatement Andrew, absolutely brilliant video, and fantastic work 👏. One of your best videos, as said by many. Thanks for sharing.
Next time on the Andrew Camarata show: Andrew "So with all the heavy duty machines I've been buying and finding out that neither my dump trucks nor my trailers can haul them in a safe and reliable way, I've decided to purchase this semi tractor and lowboy trailer; it comes with multiple axles; it can be lifted up when traveling empty and it's capable of hauling 120,000 pounds."
This guy probably makes more money on UA-cam than a lot of guys who have similar channels. Andrew isn’t flashy, doesn’t buy brand new shiny things to entice his viewers. He’s not a commercial trying to sell anything. No click bait title to get you to watch. Not a whole lot of talking. He’s a real guy truly bringing you on a journey. I think this is why his channel is so attractive to viewers. His cinematography is something to appreciated as well. I love this channel, please never change.

I think mine has 26,000 hours
@@AndrewCamarata love it.
I can still remember the excitement I felt as a 26 year old operator, removing the plastic off of the seat of the brand new 988B that the company I worked for had purchased. The look on your face probably resembles the one on my face that day. Congratulations on your purchase, and enjoy the power.
Thanks

@@AndrewCamarata oh ok...thanks
When Andrew first bought the green track loader, he said I’ll use it here and there for big jobs. Now it’s the baby loader in the fleet.
Yeah but to move that loader will take more than a trailer on the back of a dump truck
Your empathy and compassion for others are truly admirable.
You have a way of putting complex concepts into simple terms.
I thought it was AC’s equipment yard.
The man bought 2 heavy machines in one video, both worth 40-70k...
I think the tire change for the one wheel loader was more expensive than fuel for these machines
I thoroughly enjoyed this video Andrew, seeing you work on your yard is more interesting than a lot of the jobs!

You have a way of making people feel comfortable and at ease.
You know you are in the right place when the guy is smoking a stogie that size! :D Love it Andrew, nice addition to the fleet.
I love how there's no gentle break in period for a machine Andrew gets, it's straight down to beating the hell out of it 😂
Not in a bad way, machines are made to work.
Camarata has 2 speeds. Broken and WOT
I love the way when Andrew gets a new piece of equipment, it makes that last thing he bought look like the toy that came in the cereal box.
Like his other wheel loader lol

I remember when your green Cat seemed pretty huge. But you out-beasted it by a few.
But I guess the new storage/garage expanded twice during the project…
Right! I was thinking that earlier watching this. That green cat seemed like a monster, and then seeing it next to the stuff he has lately, it seem's like yard equipment. Still puts in the work tho, glad he took it out on this job!

hands down best machine you've bought
thanks Andrew for the videos they help me relax when stressed from school and general life
With all the equipment that you are acquiring Andrew, you should start looking for a portable rock crusher and dirt screen. Start crushing the boulders into gravel and use the materials for road beds.
Also having onsite fuel to take advantage of lower rates fil machines a 500gal tank or whatever
@@bmw535igangsta you must not of watched him filling that hitachi up after the cleaning the tank. He had a big tank in his shop on a skid.
I’ve been thinking that since the start of the video.

20:00 Now you can clearly see that it would be nice to replace the tires with a different type of terrain, with a deeper tread. Besides, great material and a lot of enthusiasm for work. Greetings from Poland.
a set of new tires would cost more then the loader probably
Never thought I’d see the day when Andrew refers to the green cat at the “little loader”. Can’t wait for the blast video!
Just viewed (in awe) the revamp on your trucks springs....OMG, you are the rebirth of HS boys in their late teens working on their cars and pickups within their car clubs back in the 50’s.

Andrew "So with all the heavy duty machines I've been buying and finding out that neither my dump trucks nor my trailers can haul them in a safe and reliable way, I've decided to purchase this semi tractor and lowboy trailer; it comes with multiple axles; it can be lifted up when traveling empty and it's capable of hauling 120,000 pounds."
