It always cracks me up when people comment on the $10k for the mill, $30k for the tractor. How much stuff do you own that you'll never get a return on?? Hobby or not! Them two pieces of equipment will give you a return on your investment. Even if that set up is a hobby, it'll just take him longer. Congrats on the beautiful equipment you have there!!! Great set up!!!
Darien..one thing to keep in mind is resale value on those items. At this point he could probably sell those items and MAKE money. So they end up being great investments. Not always the case and as time goes by that could change but they will always hold value.
Timely video for me. I cut up about 35 2x4x10 today! Tree company delivered some monster pines. Most are right at 28 inches across. Gonna stay busy for a while. Always a pleasure to watch.

Looking good. Ha! When I started sawing on Woodmizers in the early 90s, the LT40 I ran had a manual flip up and style clamp. It’d run in and out hydraulically but not up/down. I’d say I sawed into that thing five or six times. Upgraded to a later model that had the four way hydraulic clamp and I thought I was driving a Cadillac. Good stuff. Be safe out there.

That auto-feeder is quite handy especially with the sensor at the front that stops the blade from hitting the clamps or anything else on the bed. :-) When you're cutting the slabs does it not make sense to count backwards from the bed up so you get even boards out of it instead of a odd one as the second last board you're cutting? If you know what the blade subtracts then compensating for that combined with the number of cuts should give you even boards and if there is a odd one out it will be on the top which may be scabbed anyway?

Can we make our own 2x4 studs like this and build a 3000 sq feet house? Or do the studs used in that construction are inspected and certified and what not.
2x4s are actually 1-1/2 by 3-1/2 nowadays. might end up with more studs that way and not sacrificing strength unless you want the actual sizes of 2x4 inches.

Excuse my ignorance but could these be used directly in the construction of a house? Is the lumber used in construction usually dried? I have a lot of pines on my lot that I need top cut down. I was thinking of the price of lumber maybe I do some of this? What is the cost of your saw?
No you could not use this in home construction. To pass code it must be inspected and stamped. You however can use it in barns and shelters and that's where most goes. Now you could use inside your home once house is framed with stamped wood.

That's a bad sound, when the blade hits a side stop or clamp. I'd love to have some hydraulics, but this one is paid for!

2x4 in the US is actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 go and figure that one out. Still says 2x4
@@bobby9847 Similar here. Everything has gone Metric too, so 1 x 2 is approx 25mm x 50mm, but if you buy it planed, its 44mm x 20mm.
In the southern united states they're called "tuba fores" or simply, "two bys."

if im thinking correctly, by grabbing the sawdust he is checking how fine it is. Which would let him know how sharp or how dull his blade is.
Smaller boards 1 x 4 are used for a lot finish lumber and multi items to make things, cabinets, baseboards, Facia boards etc......!!!!!!

Spend that extra money and get a log Turner with your sawmill. And also get hydraulics controls that you do not have to walk every step

I know how to calculate bdft in a log, is there a calculator or rule of thumb for dimensional lumber from a log?

I own a pine thicket in tn, and always wanted to build a cabin on it, do these have to dry for a long period of time, or can you use them right away?
6 months to 2 years depending on the method. Fresh “green” wood will dry in place but will warp and crack, so you should dry lumber before using.

Why did you take that slab off before finishing the 2x4. I missed something 8:20 It wasn't wide enough?
It wasn't thick enough to make 4" wide 2x4s. I sawed it into 4/4 boards instead.

exactly why I'm building a portable mill. $7 a 2x4 in my area now. Or about 10c a board foot in labor and gas.
