  • There's a lot of talk about Difficulty in Video Games. Mostly about accessibility. But I think what gets lost in the conversation is where difficulty comes from and why it manifested in that way.

This is a nice way of descibing and giving examples of what i call difficulty and punishment. Because while ive never played dark sould based on what he said here, it seems that while celeste is the more difficult game (of the two), dark souls is much more punishing

it is interesting how you have only 90 views here. this looks and feels like a video with much higher potential like 10k-100k .

Might tackle Celeste soon. Been skirting around it since the precision platformer inch hasn't come after Dustforce.

The hardest video game is Pokémon using only a Shedinja

Shedinja is easy mode. What the heck are you talking about?

very interesting video. im no lover of the souls series but the only game i havent played yet is ds3 and elden ring (with sekiro being so different i dont count it) but i absolutely hated celeste. everything but the music slowly became absolutely soul crushing to me, and i eventually just turned on flight mode with infinite stamina and invulnerability and almost had fun. the similarity between the two games is interesting as both are fairly hitbox focused with completely unforgiving hitboxes on the player while not giving the player any real mobility or combat options. both feel very incomplete and dissatisfying to me.
but the real reason i wanted comment on this is cuz the strawberries are the number one complaint about celeste. people fucking hunted those things thinking that the fairly hard screens they were in would be rewarding enough only to barely affect the ending in a very minor and unspoken way. ds1 is similar in that you get two different endings based on a very minor action at the end of the game, either leaving the kiln to see if theres another boss or resting at the bonfire to go see what you unlocked after beating gwyn, only to hit a short cutscene and credits unexpectedly.
i really should love celeste but the gameplay is way too unforgiving and weirdly strategy-focused for me to appreciate or enjoy what others could call level design, while i hate ds1 and ds2 more and more and more throughout the years as more and more people call the souls series flawless experiences or instant classics when the numbers clearly show that most people never beat any of the souls series.

I strongly disagree that Celeste is harder then a souls games mechanically especially later enteries like Sekario or Elden ring.. You are really over estimating the complexity of celste mechanics since they are extremely simple and the raw frame accuracy you need is never pixel perfect. Elden ring still mantains its difficulty without adding boss run ups and most bosses take around 2 mins to kill so its not technical skill vs dedication at all.

I can certainly agree with Sekiro as the gameplay is much different. But in Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and the Souls Series not only can you make the games easier with Co-Op and level grinding where as there’s no such options in Celeste. But the fights mechanically are all very similar. There are exceptions but most of the challenge comes from dodge rolling. Where as Celeste never stops introducing new puzzel pieces to figure out.
Also this is anecdotal and I know many people will have a different experience than mine but I died way more in Celeste than in any of my first play throughs in any souls game.
