- NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

Candles and books rest on a trunk at the bottom right corner of the wide shot. There, too, are special photographs of alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins with family in his childhood home in Philadelphia. "One of the brightest things about this pandemic was going home to spend time with my mother, father and grandmother after being on the road for a while," Wilkins told NPR recently.
He also had time to meet up with his long time bandmates - Micah Thomas on piano, Daryl Johns on bass, Kweku Sumbry on drums -in Manhattan's Sear Sound studio to record this set. The quartet has been playing together for years, which is remarkable considering Wilkins is only 23 years old. In 2019, they recorded Wilkins' debut album, Omega, and released it last year to high acclaim. The project is all about Blackness, Black theory, the Black experience and the struggle and triumph that go with it all.
With a carefully crafted form and melody, "Grace and Mercy" is a lyrical story about peace, forgiveness and humility. "Warriors" is a driving, dynamic tune that conveys the shield of protection provided by our inner circles. "The Dreamer" is a tender piece that honors the Black writer and activist James Weldon Johnson and is based on his poem "A Midday Dreamer." The opening lines are played effortlessly on bass by Johns and when Wilkins joins in, his melodic saxophone exudes the rhythm of the poem's first stanza: "I love to sit alone, and dream, and dream, and dream..."

23 years old... jazz is in a good place
21 years old❤
need a joel ross tiny desk please
I said this after the first album!!!!!
I think Immanuel will soon be looked at as one of the best musicians of our time. His album is incredible!
Him and Joel Ross!
@@samuelgstn098 Absolutely! Blue Note has some incredible young talent
Also Kamasi Washington
Its a relief to here someone who treats the alto with the respect it deserves.i get so sick of the girly man sound Kenny g and the like perpetrated upon us.
Accomplished,Sincere and Spiritual, yes!But ultimately, humorless and tedious.A lot of today's players perform as though laughter is not musically acceptable. At the risk of sounding a bit harsh,I think you could call this today's version of Politically Correct Jazz.
The drummer’s accents and timing are impeccable throughout. Pianist is all into those 88’s!! Warriors...I can see dance choreography with that piece. Y’all are standing on...no dancing on the shoulders of the jazz musician ancestors and obviously listening well! Keep pushing!!!
Totally agree, the drummer is exciting like the first time I heard Eric Harland. He is fresh new and killing it.

Congrats NPR. Highest level of art. Immanuel Wilkins explores the universe on his saxophone solos.
Particular note for me: 2:02 first Wilkins solo; 11:40 second solo
The bassist is incredible...so much s p a c e. Also the cinematography !
Thank you!
Daryl johns is a boy genius. His solo on "The Dreamer" is sublime
but why he's dressed like "babushka"? ;)
...Daryl Johns,....been a favorite of mines for the last 3-4yrs,..definitely someone to keep an eye on !!
@@inkdrakula Yes, why??
this is what jazz should sound like ....beautiful storytelling....
God... Micah Thomas is so incredible
Woah these young guys are serious man
Tiny Desk really does have it all! Young people that are into jazz like this are on a completely different level, way beyond pop!
These guys are on the cutting edge - literally reinventing jazz with their playing
Jazz is alive and very well in the hands and hearts of these fantastic musicians.
These young musicians are old souls! I’ve played Immanuel Wilkins’ Blue Note inaugural album, “Omega” almost every show (bi-monthly) for the last three months. This is a great album! And he’s only, what? 23, 24 years old!
I miss live performances
This is gorgeous. I'm grateful to be able to watch history from up close.
immanuel is probably my favorite living saxophonist, and seeing him get a tiny desk is so exciting, albeit long overdue! excellent set!
Whoa! You know Sonny Rollins is still alive right? :) But to each his own...
@@maitefaangaza5888Gotta only like the older musicians, it’s a religion!
Good news guys, I heard this is the soundtrack to 2021. We are going to be ok.
DIG!
These are some beautiful young beings sharing their light. Give thanks!
Lovely. If only. Peace.
It looks like that!!!
Solid intonation Daryl Johns
The future of jazz. True dedication, playing as one. Beautiful
Wow! It was hard to tell where one instrument ended and another began it felt so seamless... three voices becoming many then one. Gorgeous jazz storytelling.
One of the greatest jazz players at the moment.

Friends, this is so unbelievably beautiful!
Thanks for the music. Fills me with warmth and makes me want to strive to step forward and be better!
Hope to reconnect and catch you guys play again after this pandemic.
For now wishing y’all the best from Germany
So are YOU inspiring! Besides that, couldn't agree more
@@josefzeimetz3563 that’s a lot, man! Hope our paths cross again and to hear you play 👌
What tight drumming from Kweku Sumbry! And that copper snare drum sounds sweet.
Hard to believe he’s fairly new to the kit.
He is incredible!! Such a beautiful phrasing!
Wilkins released one of the best straight jazz albums last year. A bit overlooked, I felt like (even though it says it was released to high acclaim in the description)
Most jazz albums get overlooked :( but he got recognized well in the community
@@jamesgeng2213 I felt like it was a bit overlooked within the community, was what I meant (compared with Joel Ross, who he plays with, for example); I don't think it's much of a point to relate if things are overlooked or not to the mainstream a lot of the time… but there are of course communities within the community and I may hang around more in other corners :)
Do you have more straight jazu stuff like this?
Straight up one of my favorite groups rn
I'm truly thankful for being alive to hear these dudes playing together 🤍
This is what skill and artistry look like. On that last song Daryl Johns just left his body and went somewhere else!
This entire performance is just a fresh breath of air, that I needed to exhale!!!! Thank you so much Tiny Desk!!!!❤️😍🤯🥰
Yes girl its on repeat for me!!!
I love how all of them play. The drummer is such a great listener and does such a great job with the color he adds. The bass player is so solid, I love his tone, his clarity, his sense of time. The pianist is great too although I don't have anything extra to say about his playing. Immanuel's technique is incredible and he is so thoughtful about his lines. He has a fantastic alto tone as well, really full, warm, but also brilliant and cuts through at the same time. Just an amazing combo!
Ooooh my! That's an alto sound and a half, I love it. The whole band is rocking up a storm. My my my. Thanks Immanuel and band, and thanks to NPR as always.
I really appreciate this. This is indeed the best way to start a day. Especially for my mental at work, and.. This is an incredible offering. I'm about to look up the project. I enjoyed the chemistry here. Man.. Easy way to escape. 💜
How's everyone's face feeling? Melted?? Unreal performance.
One of my favorite records from 2020....
Everyone sounding great! As an alto player myself you are an inspiration Immanuel, thank you.
THE SWEET JOSEPH ON THE BASSS XDX

Outstanding performance on Warriors!
Tiny Desk: please keep the contemporary jazz going! I'd love to see James Brandon Lewis, Daniel Carter, Jaimie Branch, Yazz Ahmed, Ted Poor....

The bass tone sounds so good on this!
2020 best jazz album! It deeply moves my soul and stimulates my brain. Thank you!

One of the best Alto players out there
For comparison try Richie Cole RIP. ( not the alto madness one to start song lol)
@@mstewart109 Richie was indeed one of the very best
my ears say thank you
Just saw these guys last night in Santa Cruz, CA. Sooooooo good! The comment below about s p a c e is right on. The bassist and the pianist - all of them actually - were just so good. I can't even find the words to describe it. They went to another plane, and took us with them....
oui cette musique est vraiment incroyable quelle inspiration quel talent je suis pret pour la nouvelle galaxie qu il m emporte avec eux...total .respect 😎😎
Wonderful concert!!! Thank you! A true testament to TRUE jazz!! Awesome!!!
I have just seen them live in Vitoria-Gasteiz, with a different contrabassist. Playing after a glorious set by Brad Mehldau Trio was a great responsibility, the chances to disappoint were high. But they really delivered, the concert was electrifying! I adored the versatility of Immanuel Wilkins, who could change the mood from dreamy instrospection to almost mad energy. The drummer was also amazing, sometimes he sounded quite African, he put you in a trance. I will certainly follow Immanuel Wilkins' career, he'll certainly bring us many delightful performances!
Beautiful, sincere,perfect.Thank You.
Inspiring.....so great that this music is out in the world. Thank you.
Wow!!! The Tiny Desk I never knew I needed. This is beautiful.
man this rendition of the dreamer is fantastic
It looks like the new jazzy trends!

That's really dope!
That's great. I'm curious, what's covered in the lessons?
@@JasonMarsalis Hello Jason! We are currently exploring some dundunba rhythms from Guinea west Africa and how we can adapt them to the drum kit. Thanks for checking out this video, truly means a lot to me.
All the best,

@@kwebe18 Greetings! If Guinea West African rhythms are being taught, I need lessons with you. I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of the majority of music post-2000 but the album you guys made was truly enjoyable and inspiring. Hope to see ya'll live at some point. Stay safe out there.
