    "Olaf Olafsson"
    That name gets an A for effort on creativity.
    Edit: Jeez guys, I know Icelandic and Scandinavian names commonly do the "x son/daughter of y" thing. I just thought it was funny to me, kind of how "Jack Jackson," or "John Johnson," would be.
    And thanks for the ridiculous number of likes, I've never accomplished anything in my life so this is nice.

      tbh Icelandic Surnames are formed with the name of the father, so he had no choice in that regard, but yeah, he shouldn't have been called Olaf...
      Also his wife's surname is Olafsdottir... Which is just taking a piss by now...

      So true. I'm also very glad it happened the way it did. People like to complain about modern gaming a lot but we have a varied healthy market of games for every type of person and I really don't think that would be the case if Nintendo stayed with Sony. Competition is fantastic for consumers.

      Colin O'Briant yes but the thing about this "dragon" is that it fits the description of blue ben. chances are blue ben was actually that dinosaur, and its very likely that all the stories of dragons and such were dinosaurs or dinosaur-like animals, afterall they share very similar descriptions (a giant carnivorous lizard thing which lives in a cave or somewhere)

      I don't think so.
      Remember, had the PS1 not come out, the Saturn wouldn't have been rushed to market. Thus it would've had an easier architecture to develop for. Also, it wouldn't have been announced and released during E3, thus pissing off both third party developers and retailers. The Saturn would then be sole king of the hill for two years, until the N64 would've come out.
      Sega would therefor not say that the Saturn "wasn't their future" two years after the consoles release, pissing off consumers and third parties alike.

    About the 'not being able to compete with the sega CD and so on' thing remember that in keeping with the snes in general, extra performance would have been in hardware inside the cartridge, NOT inside the unit itself.
    And cartridges are replaceable. You can actually see a progression of articles and documents from about 1993 to 1995 about the snes CD, which mention various hardware configurations, and these ALL also say that extra processors and memory and such would be in a cartridge, so that it could be upgraded without having to replace the expensive CD drive itself.
    Unsurprisingly the content of the cartridge included with a relatively early prototype is unimpressive. Both because it seems to be one of the earliest models, and because it stands to reason you try and get the basics working before you try and get additional upgraded hardware.
    Some of the more advanced revisions of the system included: SuperFX 2 chip as standard equipment...
    And the most recent document/plans known of. (around 1995) which are quite specific. - so specific in fact that there were probably working prototypes of this configuration too.
    The cartridge contains a HANDS cd controller chip with 4 mebagabits of RAM (512 kilobytes). This chip is a 65816 variant that handles communications between the snes hardware, the cd drive, and the included expansion processor.
    It further contains a chip to handle streaming CD audio. (snes cartridge and expansion slots have analog audio inputs that bypasses all of the audio chips and feeds directly into the final amplifier stage)
    The cartridge also has a 32 bit NEC v810 processor. (nintendo eventually used these in the virtual boy, which lends weight to this being real), along with another dedicated 8 megabits of RAM (1 megabyte). like the SA-1 there would be dedicated hardware to convert from packed pixel bitmap to the snes planar graphics formats. This processor would run at roughly 21 mhz.
    Needless to say this specification outdoes the sega CD, and pushes into 32x kind of performance levels.
    And while we don't have conclusive proof this ever existed, this IS a specification given to several gaming magazines, AND an information document for snes game developers describing what the snes CD would be.
    And that does suggest it would likely have been made if the CD unit had not been cancelled.
    Sure we don't have a prototype proving it, but remember until recently the 'playstation' was also nothing more than a rumour.
    So don't feel like the poor specifications of this prototype would have been representative of actual hardware if the drive DID exist. And even if it was, remember Nintendo's planning here in putting such expansion hardware in a replaceable, upgradable cartridge, rather than the CD unit itself.
    If it HAD existed, don't doubt that it would have had upgraded specs sooner or later.

    It's a historical artifact, it's value is not in it's practical utility. A suit of armor or an ancient statue also have little utility in a practical sense. In the film industry, there were many things that were tried to add color into film. One of them involved treating the film with a chemical that made it swell up and then using it like a stamp!

      _I HAVE RETURNED_
      It's basically a SNES with a decent sized cache and save ram mounted in a cartridge. No boost to processing like the SEGA CD or the PC CD but it'd be dead simple to work with if you know how to make a SNES game. There's also full 2x CD playback but I'm not sure if you could mix CD audio with the usual sound chip. So yeah, if someone gets their hands on the prototype (or decaps everything and sends the data to the bsnes guy) we could see a Nintendo Playstation game in our lifetimes!

      To my knowledge, Nintendo PlayStation CD homebrew was already done, two games, by the time Ben Heck started trying to repair the system, pending test on real hardware, working in NOCASH emulator. Software-relevant hardware knowledge was gained from the disassembly of the software on the boot ROM of the prototype and documented by NOCASH. The boot ROM was dumped and distributed by an anonymous source.
      Chances are, Redbook CD audio (and SONY XA ADPCM) and SNES APU sound simultaneous operation is possible. I believe this because on teardown, I have recognized a hardware design trait that connected the clocks of soundchip and optical disk drive, something that was also done e.g. in Dreamcast (and probably in some other systems, but Dreamcast hardware is the one i'm intimately enough familiar with) specifically in order to make hardware based simultaneous audio playback possible. Otherwise, if it wasn't implemented in hardware, you could still do software tricks, like either sacrificing two channels or the echo unit.

    That's really interesting, about the companies suddenly coming up and giving offers... We've experienced that in a different case, we own a farm and it used to have a lot of cows but is now converted into pure living space.
    But my parents were thinking about getting a little pot-bellied pig and had contacted a few places where you could get them. It wasn't even finalized yet but we got calls from a couple of shows... I don't remember the names because this was like 15 years ago. But they were shows about "Unusual pets" and they wanted us to come on with out pig we didn't even have yet... And they were willing to pay like 2000 dollars to get us on.
    We didn't get the pig and we didn't go on the shows (obviously) but it's still interesting to see how fast that world runs.

      I don't see why it would. If they'd follow through, the N64 would probably have had a CD-drive and get all of Sony's first party content. All of the games you loved for the PS1 would've come out for the N64 and looked way better and all PS2 games would've come out on the Gamecube. And Nintendo wouldn't have had to pursue a "blue oceans strategy", thus their consoles would never have been under powered or gimmicky.
      The main difference would be that Sega would still be making consoles, and making loads of first party games to shift units. In other words, we'd still be seeing new Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally and Project Gotham Racing games coming out. Plus Sega would've released all fourteen Shenmue shapters by now.

    • @GenerationRx

      Holammer Get with it.. They ALSO develop software, it doesn't take much looking around to realize graphics push is killing gaming. Devs can barely afford to develop (buggy, laggy, half built) "AAA" titles, which require season passes out the gate. The cost to develop a modern game is getting ridiculous, the looks are getting shiny, and the gameplay is swirling down the damn toilet.

    • @JapanForSale
      @JapanForSale 6 років тому

      Why all the misguided contempt for Nintendo? The Switch is probably the most excited I've gotten for a Nintendo console in years, and I'm just now discovering how much I missed out on the GC through Wii U. All their first party properties are gold standards for gaming. Their consoles are underpowered, but at least the Wii and Switch are innovative. Instead of pushing out graphically pretty but mechanically broken games, they take the time to make sure every major title is legendary. The gaming world would be a lot cheaper and more grey without Nintendo.

    • @hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853
      @hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 6 років тому

      @@JapanForSale Yeah, Nintendo definitely liven up gaming. On the other hand, I'm glad there are gaming companies other than them. If you look at Nintendo's third-party policy from the NES days, it shows how brutal they were (and in a sense, had to be to avoid another market crash); it's doubtful that they would have ever moved away from this policy had so many classics not changed gaming on other systems (Doom, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, FF7 etc.). I don't think gaming would be as cinematic or treated as seriously by the general public, for example, so a person like Hideo Kojima could never fulfil their vision in a gaming landscape where Nintendo became the monopoly holder in AAA gaming.

    • @JapanForSale
      @JapanForSale 5 років тому

      Hostius: Nintendo arguably was the grandpapi that gave us those legendary titles you mentioned, such as MGS, FF7-9, etc. I could not imagine what my developmental gaming stage would be like without those. I will always be thankful for that.

    • @jakobholgersson4400
      @jakobholgersson4400 7 років тому +11

      I'd disagree.
      The thing is that since the PS1 launched, it's been in vogue to mock any and all mistakes Nintendo make, while Sony and Microsoft get away with pretty much anything.

    • @JapanForSale
      @JapanForSale 6 років тому

      You could say Sony vs. MS for 3 generations is a very good business decision. It's just 2 sides of the same coin, made shinier every couple of years. In terms of return on investment, that's a steal.
      But Nintendo has had something new to offer every new generation in that same time span. They stayed relevant by staying above the fray. It must take some incredibly good decisions to stay alive and thrive for this long by charting completely new territories.

    I love the Nintendo Playstation story. Because in perspective, it's probably one of the most important moments in the history of videogames. And the fact that this story has ended up like this, with the console ending up on the hands of this two guys who didn't even know what it was at first, and don't really care much about it, just makes it more perfect in a way.
