    HI there, about long term storage... does the use of salt water affect internal seals?

    I really like the lifestraw products and have been using it for years..
    but I tried the collapsible one with the peak Series and after a few liters and a few back flows, the filter has a terrible flow rate.... I tried many things but I just can't get it to work again.
    That and the strong plastic taste that I suppose would go away quite quickly after some use.
    So I got a second one, same problem
    I'd love a video regarding the problems people can have with it.
    As I said, I really like your products, it's super useful and well designed, but I don't seem to understand what I am doing wrong with it

      @@lifestraw yeah well I tried to do that... twice.
      and absolutely no answer whatsoever from the official website or the email...
      the first step to make it right is to answer people...

    Converting to a new religion would not involve the reordering of a person’s life as much as using and maintaining one of these water filters.

    EDIT/Update -- It broke and the thread cracked, around 5 mins after writing my original post. First time attempting backwash, and it fragmented in to several pieces. Extremely brittle, and completely confusing.
    Original Message -- Loved using mine in New Zealand recently - And this video was great for helping me store it nnow Im home. Thanks team!

      @@lifestraw - Actually just had to return it, via Amazon. First time backwashing it (about 5 mins after watching this video!!)... and the thread all cracked (under completely moderate pressure. Very weird!)... Rendering it unusable.
      I had no option for a swap, or to discuss with yourselves...so just returning for a credit.

    Can you reference the lab efficacy tests for these filters? Impressive specs for the size.

      @@lifestraw Not super impressive test results there. Performance seems to drop RAPIDLY after just one hundred litres filtering you have around 500ml filtered per minute. That's pretty poor

    They can sit on a shelf dry for 1-2 years waiting for someone to purchase. But once you own them.... they need to be in hydro stasis on something....

    • @lifestraw
      @lifestraw  Рік тому +1

      That's correct! Once your filter is wet, you should avoid letting it dry out.

      @@travisross9913 i can vouch through painful and costly experience with several different brands of hollow-fiber filters, including the original lifestraw, that you don't want to let it dry. You can get lucky a few times, soaking the filter for a couple hours before heading out for your hike, and it will work, but i got stung several times and ended up with a useless filter. That's why i watched this video, and will try that saline solution storage.

    I love the lifestraw peak series system. I've had no problems with it while out camping. I think I've been storing it well, but wanted to check more by watching this video. I find this instructional video too fast and not clear enough about exactly what she's doing; the syringe will be full one moment and then cut to the next part, and it's empty, and I'm not really sure what she did.

    If I knew I can't dry it out for storage I would've never bought it. Not wasting any more money for LifeStraw that's for sure. What a joke...

    • @DominiqueB
      @DominiqueB 7 місяців тому +2

      Unfortunately, it's the same thing for every hollow-fiber filter, they're all pretty much the same design inside -- I've ruined a couple other brand filters that way. The difference is that the other manufacturers don't mention it in their instructions (yet), but often the salesforce at stores like REI will give you the secret to long life for your new filter when you talk to them... another reason to patronize brick and mortar stores. I noticed that MSR or Platypus did change their instructions and now add a mention of soaking the filter before use after letting it dry off: I wonder if they'll also come around to recommending wet storing... :-|

    • @1stRanger
      @1stRanger 7 місяців тому

      @@DominiqueB No, not really. Every manufacturer has very specific recommendations on usage and storage and LifeStraw is one of the very few (if not the only one) that recommends storing their filters that way. They're also the only brand that doesn't have any instructions on checking their membranes integrity.

    • @DominiqueB
      @DominiqueB 7 місяців тому +2

      @@1stRanger if you re-read my comment, you’ll see that I did say that most other manufacturers DO NOT mention keeping hollow fiber media wet, but the people who sell them know, and will tell you. I’ve ended up with one original lifestraw, one MSR Trailshot and one platypus quickdraw unusable after letting them dry out completely. Usually they get revived by an overnight soaking, but I’ve ruined enough filters by following the old storage instructions to realize they are not up to snuff and will try that saline solution storage. Again, MSR has already updated their instructions to advise users to pre-soak the filters, I wouldn’t be surprised if it keeps changing.
      I agree with you it sucks… Good luck with your next filter.
