    Bruce is easily one of my top 5 most influential artists. He is a master craftsman at songwriting--both musically & lyrically. He effortlessly crosses many musically boundaries & draws from all different genres of music. If you haven't seen him live, you NEED to; he never plays the same show twice...or even the same tune the same way ever again! You will be treated to spontaneous inventions, sensitively brilliant & virtuosic piano playing & story telling, his signature 2 handed independence style, etc...the way great music dynamically EVOLVES. But this interview is not new--his kids are not 8 anymore, they are in college now. This interview references songs that were on his 'Halcyon Days' CD--released in 2004. Still a great interview; thanks for posting!

      +brassenforcement who's the other 4 on your list?

    • @brassenforcement
      @brassenforcement 8 років тому

      Hey Nathan, thanks for asking--so my other 4 would be Dave Grusin, Wynton Marsalis (as I am a trumpet player too), Keith Jarrett, & Georg Frideric Handel...it probably gets even more interesting & wider of a palette if we'd expand to a top 10 list, but I won't bore you with it & you get the gist. There is however another name that wouldn't necessarily make it onto my top 10 list, but he is probably the only other person (other than Bruce Hornsby) that I would refer to as a true 'musical genius'...& that is Bobby McFerrin. For people who only know him as having been the "Don't Worry Be Happy" guy, they have totally missed out. How about you--who's on your top 5 list of most influential musicians?? Cheers!--PjB

      +brassenforcement Hey PjB - Nathan here - Thanks for sharing. I'm a Handel fan, and every time I hear McFerrin, I'm always stunned with awe. Well in terms of Jazz/Blues, Herbie Hancock is my favorite artist, but I'm also a big fan of Dr. John, as well as Donny Hathaway for the original R&B sound. cheers - Nathan

      Hey Nathan--I am a HH fan too...was cool to see his cameo at the end of the recent movie about Miles Davis called 'Miles Ahead'--Don Cheadle really did an amazing job! (as did Ethan Hawke in the recent move about Chet Baker called 'Born to be Blue'). Speaking of the Hathaway's--did you see that video of Donny's daughter Lalah singing with the band Snarky Puppy? I think the song is called 'Something'--& it's unbelievable. I won't spoil it, but definitely worth checking out, especially around the 6:12 mark--but watch it from the beginning & let it build. They all won a grammy over this one (not that necessarily means anything...). Great band too. Alright man, great talking!--PjB

      I was thinking about watching "Miles Ahead" and I hadn't heard that a movie about Chet Baker came out (and that Ethan Hawke is in it 0o) Snarky Puppy is cool and I think I did see that video a while back but Ill look it up again. Same man, keep it real - Nathan

    Hey Bruce If you read this someday thank you for not giving up on your dream to do music as career choice. Because of a ankle injury in gymnastics class ( I slipped on the balance beam trying to impress the more advanced students silly thing to do as a beginner which I learn that the hard way!!) But Because of this, that weekend ,I saw your "The way it is"i video for the first time. Especially the above shot of you playing The piano and since I was writing lyrics for a few years when that weekend was over, I decide maybe I can write songs as a career and music started to becomie my passion and gymnastics I was during just for fun now Also when IIt comes to the things like how you write ideas, keeping paper near you and others things musically all I kept saying while watching this is "I am the same way too much"It's nice to know that I,m not alone when it comes to this So thanks you again and best wishes for the rest of this year and the years to come.
