the easiest way to explain it is as a divorce; the SAD got the financial strength, first team and the Primeira Liga spot whilst the club got the badge, the history, the stadium, and the majority of the fan support. Back to those SADs mentioned earlier. Time for a brief explanation for those who don’t know this particular aspect of Portuguese football regulation (regulation being a national pastime in Portugal). A “SAD” (Sociedade Anónima Desportiva or Anonymous Sports Society) is a privately held company that by law clubs must have as a way of maintaining equity and increasing transparency. SADs have to publish their financial reports publicly which can at times make for interesting reading. In general, it is private businesses who finance the football teams with investments through the SAD companies. At the end of June the SAD of Belenenses and its parent club parted ways. There had been animosity between the two entities for a long time and there was no love lost between SAD President Rui Pedro Soares and Club President Patrick Morais de Carvalho. Accusations flew between both entities, most from the SAD to the club; claims of breaches of contract, money owed apparently by the club to the SAD, and other smaller and petty but no less vigorous disagreements. Interestingly, both teams played this past Sunday. Belenenses SAD hosted Braga, who were looking to go top of the Primeira Liga with a win, whereas Os Belenenses were playing their first league game of the season, hosting Olivais e Moscavide, a tiny club located close to (as their shirt sponsor suggests) Parque das Naçoes in the east of Lisbon.
The original Belenenses is going next season to be on the 4th division, the last profissional and national division and for the first time since the split they will be Playing the Portuguese cup
Do you believe that the official attendance number reported for this game was 2308 people ? I'm glad i stumbled across your video just to get another confirmation that the attendance figures are completely manipulated by the "Belenenses SAD" owners in order to give the false impression that they have a lot of support. The actual "SAD" fanbase is no more than 60 people (at best) and some family and relatives of the players and staff. The "SAD" owners usually give away free invites to tourists or people visiting the estádio nacional perimeter so that can have some more people attending the matches. Glad you enjoyed it and glad you got to watch the game near the Santa Clara supporters. Not sure if you are aware but Santa Clara is not from the mainland, they are based in the Azores islands, which makes it even more ridiculous that they can have more supporters than the home team.
Hey mate, thanks for watching and commenting to let me know. It's a shame I couldn't get the tickets for free haha! But its still cool to visit this old, famous stadium. However, yeah I have read into the Belenenses/Belenenses SAD split and it's a shame that the SAD club dont get many fans. Hopefully the other team can get promoted back up the leagues. And yep I saw how far Santa Clara is! Great support considering how far away it is! Thanks again for watching. Obrigado! 🤝🇵🇹
Walking 2.5 hours. That's why we love groundhopping :) Nice video again, not to many people there but you never now what is behind the wall 500,5000 or 50.000 supporters. :)
There is a famous bakery in Belem. I think it's next to the building at 0:54. The train from Lisbon city centre to Belem is really cheap. Beleneses (the original club, meaning the Ones from Belem) is one of only 5 clubs to win the Portuguese Championship. The big 3 and Boavista being the others. Great channel.
Great video. Unfortunately even portuguese teams in the top division won't get that many fans. Most of Portugal splits into supporting the big 3 which is Benfica, Porto and Sporting. Games featuring those teams have amazing atmospheres and even better when they play each other. It's still good to see from time to time the little clubs and their fans though. People from time to time should just get a cheap ticket to a local game and have a good time
Thank you. Yeah I definitely need to come back for some big games, but I do like watching the lesser supported teams sometimes. Hopefully I can come back to Portugal soon :)
Great Footy Adventure!! :) Yes, what I can find is that it was due to financial issues in 2012, as the club sold 51% to an investor. The deal was only made with the believes of having the option of buying this share back at any time. Unfortunately, it was invalid and therefore even denied by CAS in 2017! The spilt up (CF os & SAD) in 2018 resulted in that the true Belenenses supporters stayed with the authentic CF os Belenenses playing 6th division. With home attendances of approximately 5000 :P
Thanks Rik!! I should have gone to the team in the 6th division haha! No, I wanted to see a top flight game. Makes it more intimate with the players when there's fewer people at the games!

I thought I'd update you on the real Belenenses, after 3 promotions in 3 years, Belenenses has left the Lisbon regionals and is back to national competitions.
