Professor Laurence Dreyfus describes how Wagner's way of setting and altering motifs over the course of his 1848 opera, Lohengrin, reflects and enhances the drama. This video (and an essay also by Prof. Dreyfus) is supported by a digital companion - the Lohengrin TimeMachine - where you can explore how one motif, the Frageverbot (Forbidden Question) changes over the course of the opera.

Richard Wagner was the greatest musical genius of 19th century Germany who till today remains unparalleled he was highly influenced by India’s classical literature and philosophy which he has interpreted in many of his operas his greatest inspiration came from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who was influenced by India’s VEDIC philosophy this Wagner has interpreted in many of his operas particularly Ring Cycle and Parsifal
Thanks, very insightful! Half an hour for one motive. I'd imagine the ring would take a lifetime of scholarship. I know Wagner wanted his music to be enjoyed by the masses rather than just musical connoisseurs, so I'm curious. Do you think Wagner is entirely successful in making his point subliminally by the sound alone created by the way he constructs or modifies his motives. Or do you sometimes find that the essential meaning or feeling he is trying to get at is obscured to people without compositional knowledge/musical background? For instance, do you think the amen or chorale-like underpinning does a well enough job on its own to convey religiosity to the average listener who doesn't know their typical context in religious music? With Wagner, I get the feeling that people are often intimidated by how much of the iceberg they can see
Honestly I think that the music is too complicated for the general masses. Im a theatre student, but not a music theatre student, and Ive been seeing and listening to a lot of wagners works lately. It gets better, but I feel like the music alone couldnt carry me through one evening. But it impresses me more often now

Wagner hat die Leitmotive "erfunden". Später werden seine werke als musikdrma oder Bühnenbweihenfestspiel bezeichnet und nicht als Oper. Oft haben Komponisten der Filmmusik in Hollywood auf wagner zurücg gefriffen, um seinen Einfluß und zu demonstrieren bzw. die Entwicklung ewines neuen Genres.
