Denver Crumpler is probably the best tenor I've ever heard. I was too young to remember him but I remember Chief, Jake, Ott and Rosie in the '60's and used to watch them on TV in between church services on Sunday.
I was a about ten the first time I heard this song. That was 1960 I think. I always thought the Statler Brothers were the first that I heard sing it. I didn't remember ever hearing it from the Statesmen. But I was a kid. Still, I remember the impact this song had on me then. And, while I've never been caught in a fire, I've had other close calls. And Faith is what brought me out. This song still brings tears to my eyes.
My grandmother loved this song and this gospel group. We went on trips when I was a kid and sng in the car, my uncle did the Big Chief's part on this song! Man, those were great times.
The high notes were sung by the incomparable, and outrageous Denver Crumpler. The greatest of all Statesmen. That he often stayed in the background while he had the ability to vocally blow away anyone else in the quartet at any time is a testament to his teamwork and humility.
I use to go to the all night singing at the old civic auditorium in Atlanta many years ago and remember The Statesmen, and all the old groups very well, the original members, not the new ones using the name.I really miss them.
The Fourth Man (Arthur Smith) Refrain: They wouldn't bend They held on to the will of God so we are told They wouldn't bow They would not bow their knees to idols made of gold They wouldn't burn They were protected by the Fourth Man in the fire They wouldn't bend They wouldn't bow, they wouldn't burn. Now the prophet Daniel tells about Three men who walked with God Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Before the wicked king they stood And the king commanded them bound and thrown Into the fiery furnace that day But the fire was so hot that the men were slain That forced them on their way. Refrain: Now when the three were cast in and the king rose up To witness this awful fate He began to tremble at what he saw In astonished tones he spake Did we not cast three men bound Into the midst of the fire Well, Lo, I see four men unhurt Unbound and walkin' down there; There's Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego In the fiery coals they trod But the form of the Fourth Man that I see Is like the Son of God;
When I was growing up, my dad listened to The Statesmen all the time, but I don't recall hearing this song. I think I'll play it for my Sunday School Class next time I teach this lesson. :)
I was born in '71 & didn't know who the Statesmen were till the Gaither Videos. What else can be said that hasn't? They set a standard thats even today's groups are striving to achieve. It doesn't get ANY better. I know they are together in Heaven now singing again.
What a great song, I have heard this before and i always come back to hear it again. What a great message. Listen to the words. Wow thanks for sharing this great song. I think i'll hear it one more time. thanks again.
Jake always insisted that the greatest Statesmen lineup ever was with Denver Crumpler. It's hard not to agree. I love the lineups with Rosie for other reasons, just like I think the best post-Hess lineups were with Jack Toney. However, you can't beat Crump, Hess, Doy, and Chief.
Boy am I glad I read the comments somehow I would get them by saying Kingston quartet I misunderstood when they were talking at the start and now I can look at their whole playlist oh golly I'm excited bye-bye
@junior2404 As earlier mentioned, the Word of God tells us in 2Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. And the reason Christ is returning is to rule for one thousand years in His kingdom here on earth. The blood washed saints will come with Him.
Daniel 3:24-25 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied😳, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.✝️🛐
Here is a story From the good book we know A story 'bout a miracle That happened long ago We hope that you'll take courage When temptation you meet There's somebody watching you Who's strong when you're weak They wouldn't bend They held on to the will of God so we are told They wouldn't bow They would not bow their knee to the idol made of gold They wouldn't burn They were protected by the fourth man in the fire They wouldn't bend They wouldn't bow, they wouldn't burn Now the prophet Danial tells about Three men who walked with God Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Before the wicked king they stood And the king demanded them Bound and thrown In the firey furnace that day But the fire was so hot That the men were slain Who forced them on their way Now when the few were thrown in And the king rose up To witness this awful fate He began to tremble at what he saw And in astonished tones he spake Did we not cast three men bound Into the midst of that fire Well though I see four men unhurt Unbound and walking down there There's Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego An' the fiery coals they trod And the form of the fourth man That I see is like the Son of God They wouldn't bend They held on to the will of God so we are told They wouldn't bow They would not bow their knee to the idol made of gold They wouldn't burn They were protected by the fourth man in the fire They wouldn't bend They wouldn't bow, they wouldn't burn
Would anyone know how "statesmen fan" was able to find these old recordings of the statesmen quartet? I know they came from the nabisco show, but these clips must come from CD or VHS of some sort because towards the end of the songs it will start to play another song before it cuts off. There was even one video "statesmen fan" uploaded that showed, at the end of the song, it cutting to Bill Gaither watching it on a little TV. The only Bill Gaither videos I've found on the statesmen did not include some of these older clips such as The Fourth Man or One Of These Mornings or Sunday Mornin' Meeting' Time. Would anyone be able to help me out to know where he might have gotten these old video clips?
I don't think so. The singers look at each other at other times during the song. I think it's just a little choreagraphy to make it like they are telling the story or just a way to not stare in the camera for the entire time.
Please study 1 Thessalonions 4. Nobody goes to heaven or hell when they die. Decisions are made and seal down here and that blessed day when the Lord returns he will then give us our due reward(Rev 22:11-12)i.e. eternal life or eternal damnation. We hope that everyone who profess Christ would b saved, but only God who judges the heart knows the answer. So someday if they had lived the faithful life, the Statesmen will be singing in Heaven. See also Ezekiel 33.
Again, all I have to say is people need to study the Word of God, carefully. This subject is deep and requires much prayer and meditation. But think, God had to raise Moses up from the dead to take him up. Why? If he died and went straight to heaven why ressurect him? Scripture is clear if you love God you need not worry about your 'fate' when Christ returns. Oh yeah, and why is Christ returning if we are with him when we die?
I am Hovie's 10th Cousin. What a blessing he was and remains today!
This song still thrills me to this day...one of my favorite Bible stories about how God delivers those who obey him...
Maranatha.
Me too

I'm not sure the guys name but I really like in the The Ink Spots

I've you get a chance look up johnny cash's version
My mom would play this group all the time. I am so thankful for that.
My grandmother loved this song and this gospel group. We went on trips when I was a kid and sng in the car, my uncle did the Big Chief's part on this song! Man, those were great times.
THEY would not bend, bow, or burn, in Nebachadnezzer's firey furnace, for GOD-CHRIST was with them☆☆☆
There are still persons that have great faith, I'm one of them.
Amen 2 that!! Here here!
Thank you I have a faith that God is all the matters and in the end I want to see Jesus and many others in the Bible.
Amen! 🔜🎺⏰☁️👆🏻🙌🏼👑
There certainly are
I wish I had faith like you pray for me
That my friends is SOUTHERN GOSPEL!! How I miss this traditional sound!!

Haha i love the Cuts of Hovie playing with them haha so iconic lol i look forward to seeing these men in heaven
No group has ever had the same sound. :)
Wow! Mr. Crumpler comes off the top rope on the last line!
The Statesmen! I've been listening to and been to MANY concerts of them for over 60 years!!
I love Jake's smile he is so cheerful even now haha esp the other newer Gaiter video where he almost lost it while laughing haha
When I was growing up, my dad listened to The Statesmen all the time, but I don't recall hearing this song. I think I'll play it for my Sunday School Class next time I teach this lesson. :)

I heard this by the Statesman, back in the late 50’s ,they were the best…..
Never be another bass singer like Big Cheif
I totally love them. One of the best quartets EVER. I am really impressed by Big Chief's voice and the rest of the guys (Hovie, Jake etc.)
I like the mustaches.
thank you for bringing them back to youtube, i was really missing them. please never take them off!
God is in control
THE CHEIF DID A GREAT JOB
So much of these guys influence can still be heard today, love the song and the guys that sang it
Wow.
The variety of Gospel music amazes me!
I think Mr. Doy Ott went to my childhood church before I was born.
I have to agree, it's funny to see Hovie's face expressions as he plays the piano.
Yes he was the greatest. He did have a family, if you look up the Statesmen quartet group on facebook, his daughter dianna posts there sometimes.
I love this song, praise the lord......
Hello Brenda
Wow that was just a terrific performance. What a great song
What a great song, I have heard this before and i always come back to hear it again. What a great message. Listen to the words. Wow thanks for sharing this great song. I think i'll hear it one more time. thanks again.

Wow! I've actually learned this song by the Statler Brothers, (if that's how you spell it)> Thakns for sharing!
PureRoyaltyTV me too
Amen to that!
Well-done! I regret that only now I learned of this song and singing/ playing group. 56yrs young and still much to learn.
I love this stuff.
I love all those old groups, the Blackwoods, the Stamps, Weatherfords, Rebels, but on this kind of song there was no one like the Statesmen.
What great singing and very hard to sing and what a message great!!
This song brought me so much courage over the years, when I was afraid...
AMAZINGGGG 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh, my goodness. Look at Jake Hess then!
what wonderful men of God. hovie you assembled the best of the best.
Love this group.
❤
THANKS FOR SHARING!!
A beautiful hymn
Denver is my wife’s grandfather!
Great song and singing 👏
Kevin, the high note at 2:29 is by Denver, the second man. Doy, Denver, Jake and Chief. Great song!!!
Gotta love it!
I love this!!!!
Chief at his best!!!
Boy am I glad I read the comments somehow I would get them by saying Kingston quartet I misunderstood when they were talking at the start and now I can look at their whole playlist oh golly I'm excited bye-bye
I love it! 🥰
We need some folks that won't bend today.
Awesome song
No one can sing like the original statesmen!!
OMG they're RAPPING!!! LOL
Those guys were dressed sharp.

Jim was married and had a daughter. They attended Washington St. Assembly Of God Church in Atlanta when I did.
Joann Wood - who’s Jim?
@@zerubbablestranger6970 Probably refers to Big Chief James Weatherington.
@southerncrescent1401 He's the tall one in the back singing bass.
true gospel!
The video showing him with him with what true hair Jake has is the "1950's Statesmen TV Show Saltine Commercial".
Love me some Jake Hess! That was his real hair lol
Actually it wasn't, that's a piece. Don't need hair to sing though!
Jake with his own hair! go see the one he does years later on a homecoming! Still wonderful voices and all gone now I think?
Here is a story

A story 'bout a miracle

We hope that you'll take courage
When temptation you meet

They wouldn't bow, they wouldn't burn

Three men who walked with God
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
Before the wicked king they stood
And the king demanded them
Bound and thrown
In the firey furnace that day
But the fire was so hot
That the men were slain
Who forced them on their way
Now when the few were thrown in
And the king rose up
To witness this awful fate
He began to tremble at what he saw
And in astonished tones he spake
Did we not cast three men bound
Into the midst of that fire
Well though I see four men unhurt
Unbound and walking down there
There's Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego
An' the fiery coals they trod
And the form of the fourth man
That I see is like the Son of God
They wouldn't bend
They held on to the will of God so we are told
They wouldn't bow
They would not bow their knee to the idol made of gold
They wouldn't burn
They were protected by the fourth man in the fire
They wouldn't bend
They wouldn't bow, they wouldn't burn
i looked back an assumed this happened to me a long time ago. i dunno how great i am today tho
but i still, see
Go boys

Dr. Kent Hovind brought me here! ;-)
What Is Your Worldview? - Creation or Evolutionism? Oh I love that guy!!! Great person!!!

Yesooooo
The creator is no man or woman. There was no fourth, only unity.
Was this song on an album somewhere as well? I love it, and I can't figure out what Album it was on!
I wish I had a pencil thin mustache!!!!
At 1:52 is Denver asking which verse they are on?
Sam Kennedy I think the front guy was supposed to hold up 3 fingers and forgot
Starts in 0:43.
@chernowitz I've seen a few comments about "Big Chief". Which one is he?
Hovie Lister on the piano
Denver Crumpler standing in front, Doy Ott, Jake Hess and James Big Chief Wetherington here at the back
What is the fourth Man
statler brothers
Nope, it wasn't his hair. There's one video from back then showing him without his hairpiece.
Are you going to put the songs on this site?

im sorry, but the pianist was making laugh through the whole video LOLOL
