This is a beautiful Grand Am, I grew up loving these cars. I'm glad to see someone valued and took much pride in taking good care of this car. You can get another 20years out of this baby easily!😃
Oh man this vid brings back memories. I had a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am LE Quad 4. I miss my car. I would buy this car!!! In 2007, I had to give up my home in divorce. I left my Grand for the weekend and told the new owners that I would get it that Monday, They gave it away to salvage, who to it to a scrap metal yard. I tried in vain to get there but they had already chewed up my baby!!! Its a light pole somewhere now.
I had one identical too this .
When the quad four was new it ran really strong .
this car with the High Output Quad 4 and 5 speed was a real hoot to drive.
I owned 2 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ's
They had the ORIGINAL 185HP Quad Four, and the 5 speed Muncie transmission.
It was my first car, and I have regretted selling it since I did it 15 years ago.
Really fun car to drive, fast and handled great.
I had the exact one you mentioned, just like the one in this video except with the 5spd manual gearbox - very smooth shifting "gertag" transmission. I loved that car. Put about 220K on it before the head gasket let go, and I didn't have the funds to have it fixed, so I had to let it go. Had a top speed of 118MPH before the governor kicked in and restricted the fuel, but it had about 2K more revs on the engine so I know it could have gone faster if I'd chipped it.
At one point I redid the exhaust system to a single tailpipe with a turbo muffler - sounded pretty sweet.
@@astick7777 is the original preferable for some reason?
Bought one of these in 2010 for $300, it was in need of work and had 150k miles, but after new spark plugs and coils it ran great and was VERY quick even with an automatic. I regret having to get rid of it and not having the money to fix it up, as I've seen very few others on the road since.
Tuneman1984 I took an iron z and a monte Carlo ss with my 88 grand am quad 4. Miss that car, but not the head issues it had
i LOVED my 1991 Grand Am with the Quad-4 and the "sporty exhaust." I hated replacing head gaskets constantly. Thanks for the memories!
So glad to see this car I had an 89 that looked indentical but had a turbo that I put a metallic purple clear coat on it car looked amazing got tons of compliments had it almost 20 years Wife made me sell it after our 3rd kid it was mint
He says "Things don't rust in California" as he shows the tailpipe rusted out. Sweet!
Because GM N Bodies are made of the cheapest material.
Was waiting to read this comment or else I was gonna say it lol 😂
the bass in my Pontiac used to shake store windows and bus shelters with one 15" sub woofer in this car awesome cars brings back memories...love those old school Pontiac the new version of this car is the Pontiac g6 ...
My mom had one of these. I still remember climbing into the back seat and distinct GM interior smell.
I had a 1987 grand am with the iron duke under the hood. Fantastic car!!!
That ring is ridiculous.
Quad fours make for some good drag racing fun :D
I swear, Nathan, you are the hardest working man in California!
This video made me nostalgic of my mom's black non-SE Grand Am. It was the first car she bought herself but we had to get rid of it in the mid-90's because the transmission was crap. We replaced it with a '95 Cadillac DeVille which was much nicer. Nice to see this one survive, Grand Am's of this era are kind of rare.
Ours had so many problems with the Alternator constantly going bad, at least every few months. Had it for a few years then got rid of it around 1993
I have a 1986 Grand Am LE coupe with the Buick sourced V6 with 45,000 miles it had 28,028 when I pulled it iutnid my grandmothers garage. Its clean just like the one in the video.
Sorry for commenting on nearly every one of your videos, but these are so cool haha. I'm jealous you get to own all of these different cars.
I loved this body style!
I have the exact same car but in manual 5-speed. Have never seen another one like it.
we build excitement. I want this G/A Nathan.
Man i with car was for sale i would buy it right now. had the same car when i was younger. I would keep it and drive it as my fun car no winters im in wisconsin
My sister bought this exact car, same interior and exterior new in 1990, her first New car 12000$. I bought it for 1200$ in 1996 from her with 119000 highway miles. It was in immaculate condition because she babies her cars. But.... this car was a nightmare to keep running. A real money pit on engine and trans repairs. I pumped enough money into it to keep it going to 160k. I will say I always liked the styling and the get up and go.
As a car dealer myself, I can say I have NEVER seen a Grand Am of this bodystyle with the Quad 4. I own a 98 Cavalier Z24 as a daily driver with the Quad 4 and im comfortable with saying the Quad 4 is one of my favorite engines of all time. Extremely reliable and killer on gas. This Grand Am is so uber rare and nice that it should be put into a showroom forever.
It was my first car and very rare in Belgium. The belgian police drove with The Pontiac transport 2300quad
I worked on all the Pontiac / Cadillac commercial s of the day. Good times !
jeeze those are Rare. o_O I always liked that style of Grand Am.
Personally, I'm a Grand Prix man. But that Grand Am is beautiful. My very first rental car was a Grand Am back in '02 after a little mishap ;)
I've always liked the late 80's Bonneville the SSEi's her's was white. Ever try the BMW 8series?
If you ever get another one just like this one let me know!!!!
I had the same car back when i was a teen. Loved it they do not make em like that anymore. If i could find one in that shape again i would buy it in a second.
Perhaps it's the bright white of the rims that establish an association with the white wall tires commonly seen on the large, unique cars of the 30's and 40's...or maybe they just look sweet XD
This Is what I want!
Mint condition
I had the same vehicle except mine had a sun roof & 6 speakers 2 in rear 2 in the doors & 2 on the dash. It had same motor but timing belt blew on it & destroyed motor @ 155k.
Nice car nathan!! That sure is a diamond in the ruff, does the ac and heat work?
As a used car dealer I never bought Quad 4's, Tech 4's (The Iron Duke) were the motor you wanted in these cars. But this does look like it was a nice original car.
You wanted the IronDuke if you wanted about 70 fewer horsepower (Quads had 160 for auto and 180 for manual I think).
There was a 2.0 Turbo option for ‘88 and ‘89, and the 3.0 V-6 from ‘85 to ‘88
The quad 4s have better performance and fuel economy than the 60 deg. v6 (until the 3400 in 1999). As for as reliability issues, the head gaskets on the quad 4s have issues, but the 60 deg. and even 90 deg. v6s have intake manifold gasket problems. I would consider that a wash in my book.
As for the water pump, the only problem with it being time chain driven, is that you have a lot more work on your hands if it needs replaced. It has no effect on its reliability.
Love the Nathanisms - "chippy ding". Lol
😂😂 basically my first car thanks for your videos.
Pretty sweet and unique car with the matching colors and all, but too bad the quad 4 wasn't the best motor in the world because it sure cranks out some power for a little 4 banger!!
Thanks
engine sounds just like my 2000 Z24 cavalier
Grand Damn it!
the se model with the 3.0 v6 was the one i had , i had a 1986 , think they made em 1986-1988
They made one SE model back in 1988 that had a 2.0 turbo 4cyl that was fast.
I seen a few of theses ar the wood word dream cruise . These are sweet cars .
good design US cars beatiful Grand am
wow RARE
Certain model Quad4 engines were prone to blown head gaskets especially when pushed hard
Sailor Dave. I drove the shit out of mine. 203,000 miles I put in two head gaskets. But loved the car.
Clean ! lol 28, i'd take that over -27 celcious or -16 Fahrenheit :P
ile take this over 10000000000000000000 times than the sonic and aveo
man they made great cars.
check out my town and country it has 230 000 miles on it and i can still do a burn out on it and ya it's a minivan with a 3.8
That car his been in a front end accident. Think that it has a 1989 or newer front end but and 86 - 87 rear end. Growing up my friends dad had a 87 grandam and rear ended another car. When gmhe retooled for the face lifted grand am they stopped making Replacement cosmic parts for 1986 - 1988 Models.
This is a 1989
What year is the car?
Im a dealer in Pennsylvania. i got a lot that holds about 50 cars.
Those are lower rocker panels not spoilers
Was supposed to be the New GTO with a Blower under the hood ! 😊
im not an overly huge fan of the quad4/ 2.4twin cam engine my 2001 Z24 disappoints me
whoa! I have the exact same car! they are really sharp. I got mine up to about 160mph when the bearings started to melt so I need another one for parts. I already replaced the main bearings and oil pump. still need everything else. thanks for posting! great car but actually the ole tech 4 LE without the trim is like a jeep if you have the five speed...it'll go literally thru anything!!!
That was my 1st car
1/4 mile on the street these would get beat, 1/2 mile as we would run sometimes, that quad 4 was dangerous.
Is that a 1989?
Dear god now that's cold !!
i dont have much experience with the old quad four, but i never really cared for the later versions. they seem to rattle. i also dont like timing chain driven water pumps, just seems like a really bad idea. its like a 8-10 hour job just to do a water pump.... no thanks. give me a 2.2, 2.8, 3.1, 3.8/3800 or small block chevy anyday but much like 3400 DOHC i have avoided quad fours. i used to know someone that had a shop he did a water pump on a quad in an achevia said it was a royal PITA
Still For sale?
Quad4 engines were fun until the head gasket blew.
For you still have it
Thumbs up if hello road brought you here 👋🤓
Do you wanna sell it? 😃
I'd take -27 celcius over -42 celcius!
Es mio
Man I wish I lived in cali...Sure would beat a shit town of 3000 where the rarest car i've ever seen is a 1983 deisel golf 5 speed. I freak out if i see a manual car even. I hate it.
that screams 90s
No, it screams 80s. This is what the Grand Am looked like during the core of the 80s. The 90s ones were styled differently.
@@connorpusey5912 this is the 1989-1991 body style ,,, now what lol
fingersmcgee
It may be the 89-91 facelift, but the generation is still 1985-1991. It saw the majority of its run in the 80s and it has an 80s design. Most cars from the early 90s were basically just leftovers design-wise from the 80s.
@@connorpusey5912 ya pretty much although the towncar went a major redux in 1990
werent these quad 4's not the best engines..... i think these cars were better if they had the 60 degree v6. not saying that these werent good cars, just dont think that anything quad for based or any offshoot of these engine..... i dont like them too much. they also have a water pump driven off the timming chain... not a fan of them
Saves gas but won't save money overall because it'll be broken all the time.
Your right Niceprince, Tech 4 was the good motor, Quad 4 were nightmares!
niceprince your right i had this piece of junk car. $$$$ pit
Agree! I owned one. Looked great, fun to drive but broke all the time.
Especially head gaskets
I sold mine at 203,000 miles. Lovely car. I would buy another in a fat minute.
Not even the courtesy of a reach-around. :-\
This thing has only 48k and its a piece of junk lmao
You don't sound very intelligent when you call side skirts "spoilers"
You sound like a OCD Jagoff picking people apart on a 8 year old video... Get a Life..
@@CerealMarshmallows you don't sound very intelligent when you call someone a "jagoff" when its actually jackoff. You're digging yourself a deeper hole.
@@blakeg4166 You are the least intelligent being I have spoke to this year! Thanks for making the cut before Jan 1st... Yes you are a Jackoff as well... But Next time at least research words you dont know before you show the world what a total JAGOFF you actually are ;-)
@@CerealMarshmallows I love you Mr.Grinch
It's a clean piece of junk.
Why junk?
This car is junk. Money pit. You will be at the garage all the time.
Why? Mine never was. But than I did all my own work.
This guy runs his mouth so damn much about everything but the car.
