I am very curious about the in video editing probably basic but if it's halfway decent that's a great little detail that a lot of cameras forgot.. I got a point to Rico gxr in gr for this when it comes to the stills the ability to edit in camera on those things it's truly amazing and I don't know why no other camera companies have ever implemented such features.. you should try playing around with an old Rico gxr the Leica Mount sensor which can easily be adapted to anything MD m42 etc. The ability to adjust every color. Hl ,shadow etc in camera and produce a jpeg was truly groundbreaking.. Hasselblad is producing a new modular system way above my price range but I'm pretty sure I know where they got the idea from. A ten-year-old modular Ricoh GXR

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video about the Nikon Z50 and your insightful comments about its limitations and its strengths. I am not a professional photographer but rather an enthusiastic amateur, and have been using Nikon cameras for about 7 years. I own a D500, Z6, and recently purchased the Z50. I was under no illusions about the Z50, even before I bought it. I expected it to be somewhat inferior to the Z6 in low light, simply based on the fact that it is an aps-c camera. No surprises there. However, after using this camera for the last 6 weeks I am extremely satisfied with so many things about it. As you say, it really is a JOY to use! I consider it a fantastic camera for what it was intended to be. Let me just add one thing that you might have omitted about the Z50. The extreme lightweight of the camera body and lenses make this an absolutely fantastic camera for traveling. The total weight of the body and the combined 2 kit lenses is just a little over 2 lbs. Incredible, because the the kit lenses cover a focal range of 16 - 250mm (24-375 mm ff equiv), and the 50-250 kit lens is surprisingly sharp! IMO, the Z50 with the 2 kit lens package is THE BEST value hybrid camera system available for travel. That is the main reason what I bought it, and I think there are probably MANY Nikon users out there who having been waiting years for Nikon to release a camera system like the Z50. Something that is an absolute joy to use and to travel with.

The low light, subject movement issue can really just be chalked up to having a smaller sensor and no mechanical sensor stabilization (which freezes camera shake, not subject movement). It's what you're paying for when you buy a Z50, which is part of why it's a sub $1000 body. Naturally, owners can make it work for their needs; APS-C DSLR shooters have done just fine for years. Realistically, no camera checks all the boxes and expectations need to be tapered accordingly to the limitations and design intent of the hardware.
Still grants access to all the S-line primes, although shooting with a range of those on a crop sensor Z50, even just from a cost perspective, would be more of a user choice than anything else. The 20mm f1.8 or even the 24mm f1.8 would make for a good handheld blog camera with the flip down screen (personal opinion: that should have been a D5k series flip out screen).
But realistically, it's best as a highly portable, take anywhere ICL body with the kit pancake lens that provides all the benefits of mirrorless systems that as an added bonus, can still use all your F mount glass.

I’ve just got the Z50 (before seeing this video). It’s still early days getting used to it but I love it. As for low light performance - I used it the other night to shoot a gig as an accredited photographer and the photos came out great.
The issue raised of not using it in the context of doing paid shoots, in particular weddings as mentioned here, is understandable from the point of view of having only one card slot, but the camera is technically easily good enough to shoot a wedding no problem - as long as the photographer is up to the job! Many people have successfully shot many weddings with lesser cameras than this in the not too recent past I’m sure.

I have had the z50 now for three weeks. The kit lens is really cool with the size, but so slow. I have noticed if you throw on one of the 1.8 z primes it focuses better in low light. But compared to the z6 the IBIS and EVF alone are night and day, but I have noticed a difference in low light focusing but as you mentioned it is only a concern really for low light events that your being paid for. I think it is an $850 camera, that out performs any camera at that price point, but not a z6 that is a $1799 camera. I am really excited for the 28mm compact prime, because I shoot 90% on primes, and that should be a great focal length and size. For me it replaced my iPhone, which I think is really its intended market, for people wanting to move into photography and graduate from a smartphone. A few things I am really happy with, the raw files are great to work with, the video is very detailed, the ergonomics are great. Things I dislike, no usb C and I wish it used the EN-EL15b battery.

But I shoot publicity stills for a local theater group, and have used a 50mm 1.8D in the past. Unfortunately that screwdriver 50mm 1.8 D won;t autofocus on the FTZ adapter, so I am looking for either a Z prime or a FX or DX prime I can use with the FYTZ adapter. Thanks!

Charles B. Focusing systems have limits to how low of light they can focus in measured in EV. So for example I believe the spec on the z6 is -5 EV. So it can focus 5 Stops below proper exposure. So if you use a 1.8 prime vs an f4 zoom, you let in 2 more stops of light. So your starting point for -5 EV is two stops lower.

Try to compare Adobe Camera Raw (latest version) with Nikon Capture NX-D and you will see a HUGE difference in noise (horrible in ACR, great in NX-D). I chose D7500 to replace my D5600 over this, because I already have some (cheap) fast glass for DX and in the back of my head, I still think that Nikon has some way to go with mirrorless. I also took in consideration things like battery life, the fact that Im not doing any video at all and for the time being and also, native Z glass is very expensive, with no third party options. I know that theres the adapter but...
now, the D7500, the camera that everybody seems to love to hate, has great low light capabilities, no problems for me there and Im getting the best results I ever got as a hobbyist photographer with it. I will switch to the Nikon mirrorless in a couple of years time, but it will be with one of their full frame cameras. I still have a lot to learn about photography until that point and maybe by then I will be able to get some glass for it at more reasonable prices - I make no money from this, I will most likely never make money from this thing I just enjoy doing.
anyway, whatever you choose in the end, just make sure to use it and keep improving!

I've had the D5600, D7500 and the Z 50 and I'd say it's more like the D7500 than the 5600. I've been primarily using the Z 50 for wildlife and for tracked deep space astrophotography and it works great for both of those. I think where I've seen the AF vs the Z6 improvements is in wildlife photography. My Z6 always struggled a little with focusing on smaller subjects (birds) and particularly small moving subjects such as a fox running or birds in flight. I haven't noticed as much of an issue with the Z 50 with those subjects. It's the same AF system so I think where the difference comes in is the crop factor and having the subject fill the frame more which makes it easier on the AF system. I would think that the AF performance would be almost identical to the Z 7 in DX mode.

    • @rudesilva6590
      @rudesilva6590 2 роки тому

Been using one for a while and in this case high ISO is pretty high like 3200+ its much better than the D7100 which I replaced.. (nothing like the Z6 which feels 3-4 times as good in low light more like a Z7) if you are just getting into photography and willing to take all your shots in manual (to learn how things work) you want a camera with an EVF as it shows you what iso/shutter/aperture changes look like in the view finder so its like taking a shot each time to change something really helps speed up the learning process which is what this camera has over the DSLR's.. hope this helps...

I bought the Z50 in November for street photography and family shots and its has become my favorite for those, and for landscapes. Images are sharp using both the native lenses and using the adapter (FTZ) my F lenses work great too. Looks like my D7200 will be getting less use although still enjoy using it. Boy does it feel massive after using Z50. My only real complaint is the Z50 is a dust magnet. Love using this little camera, and thanks Will for the fair and accurate reviews on it, the Z 50 is better than most of these so called experts have reported. Can't wait to retire my D7200 for the Z6 later this year.

I am a dSLR owner...Canon 70D (crop)...but I wanted to go to mirrorless. I'm not a pro, I'm not even quite as active as I used to be with photography, but I've been trying to get back into it. I think part of my problem is I have spent a few years going up in camera level and it means bigger and bulkier...now that mirrorless is well established, I think it's time to make the switch...but I'm just not ready for a full frame mainly due to pricing. I think making a switch to Nikon and mirrorless would be a big enough change that would require some getting used to and if I like it well enough, that would be enough to most likely make me want to invest in the full frame side...so of course I'd start with a couple cheaper lenses before investing in anything FX and pricey.
I was looking at Canon M series and R series, but I don't like that they use different lenses. The thing that caught my attention with the Nikon Z is that I can buy FX lenses and use them on a Z50. Later, if I want to I could upgrade to an FX camera.
For that scenario, would you say it might be worth a chance? I just bought my son an older dSLR (SL1) so that he can use my current lenses and start getting more serious with photography. He has an older Canon G10 that I bought him a few years ago so that he could learn to care for it and learn the basics of manual control. This could be something that becomes his if I upgrade to a full frame.

Great video but I still feel a bit in doubt. This is what I need...tell me what you think. Since my baby was born 20 months ago, I've wanted a small compact camera that would give me GREAT image quality. (My D810 is just too big!) Not only for photos of him but high quality images on the street, architecture, details etc. A camera to always have with me that really gives truly great images. I wasn't happy with the Fuji x100f for example. I can handle slow focusing in low light, so long as the final result is spectacular. Is this camera a candidate for that? :)

Too late! Bought the Z50 before watching this. I have one question - I have both my Z50 and Z6 on back button focus. The Z6 will go back to shooting mode (from the playback mode) on the press of the back focus button, but the Z50 does not. Do you have this issue? If not, what is the setting to make it automatically enter shooting mode if the focus button is pressed? Right now, my workaround is one of the front custom buttons is the playback button, and I have to press that to get back into shooting mode.
And two points I would also make for potential Z50 buyers: 1) In terms of size, the camera is not "shirt pocket pocketable", it is more "jacket pocket pocketable" with the 16-50 kit lens contracted. 2) My short description of quality is that looking on your phone, higher end camera phones may look just as good at phone sizes as the Z50 images. But if you enlarge the Z50 images keep the detail, while camera phones pictures will get blurry. While this may sound obvious, I only point this out to make the comparison against the Z6. Z6 images definitely look better than phone pictures, even at phone size images (probably because of background blur, but it's not only that).
The Z50 is fun to use, and I take it everywhere with me. The Z6 is more for "special events".
    Thanks as usual, Will.

Of course its not the best of the best but if you hired someone to do a wedding photo would you pay them to do it with a z50? It seems really good video autofocus and all those qualities are really good for the price? I'm interested in doing paid work, is there any reason you can't do paid work with it? Of course more expensive cameras are better but seems like z50 is "good enough" for most paid work? I was debating on getting the new Nikon Z 50 but I decided if I’m going to pick up another camera it’s either going to be a Z6 or a Z7. No matter how nice and small it is I have humongous hands ha ha and it’s bad enough I had to get an L plate for my Z6 just so my pinky doesn’t hang off the grip. Not that I don’t like crop sensor cameras, I loved my d7100. But after switching over to full frame cameras I just fell in love with the overall image. If I were to get another crop sensor camera it would be for nature shots or sports and I will probably pick up a used Nikon D500. That is a beast of a camera.
I saw multiple UA-cam reviews saying that it was better than the Nikon Z6 and to say that an Unstabilized camera is better than a Camera with in built stabilization is hard to believe. The z6 and z7 are game changers. They make getting the shots so much easier hand held. And I pretty much stop watching UA-cam review were‘s that have a new camera every two or three days and shoot with one brand and then talk down about all the other brands. You got to use the camera for a while to know how good it actually is and what the quirks are. I watch more tutorials to make me a better photographer then what somebody thinks on every new piece of gear. Keep up the good work my friend love the channel and your content
