- Host D. Watkins, writer on HBO’s We Own this City, a show about corruption and abuse in the Baltimore Police Department, shares his experience in the writers’ room and interviews people involved in the making of the show. Watkins recounts his own experience growing up in Baltimore during the time that The Wire took place and how he went from a childhood on the Baltimore streets to an illustrious writing career to David Simon’s writer’s room for We Own This City. We hear briefly from the show’s creators George Pelecanos (The Wire, The Deuce) and David Simon (The Wire, The Deuce). Then, Watkins sits down with actor Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, King Richard), who plays the notorious Wayne Jenkins. They discuss the war on drugs, Jenkins’ Baltimore accent, and what it was like spending time with Baltimore cops to inform the development of his character. Bernthal also reflects on how his perspective on policing has changed as a result of working on the show.

*The ending was amazing. The facial expression was priceless.*
Man.. Jon Bernthal you are one good Actor man.. I noticed you using our "accent" the one we all know we have but always deny it 😂
Don't get too attached, it's just a miniseries. I wish they did a new season for every major city🔥
They could possibly extend as, they just put another Officer away. Heard it on CNN yesterday.
New York and LA have been done. Love to see one about Detroit. There was a squad very similar run by a cop named Luke Davis, with the same corruption and almost the same results.
Wish they wrnt able to do one for every major city.
@@Davremdali Im sure ypu did lol CNN hate police.. Well they want us to hate them anyway..
I watched the documentary on the real Baltimore 8. It's interesting. 5 of the 8 were black. One thing I wish people would stop pushing is the race narrative. People are selfish and fall into corruption no matter the color. Brutality comes in all shapes and colors
@@Robpasq1959 Yep. People will often do what they can get away with. But at least it's not Mexico or some of these other places Lol. Cops and feds in Mexico do hits and work for cartels, it's one corrupt cesspool
This podcast helps you understand the show so much more
Amazing first episode. Great to see that the writers have such a personal relationship with the material and subject matter of the show.
Like D Watkins said : "The Wire intersected with real people's lives and community". It's a beautiful thing that some of those people get to be a part of a sort of spiritual sequel helmed by the same creator.
I had never heard of D Watkins until now, but now i'm really interested to read and watch his work. Can't wait to binge the show.
Ah was wondering why Bernthal nailed the accent so well; he is from DC!
truth!
Yall already got BPD heated 😭
Loved the breakdown. Plan to be here for episode 2.
As another young dude from Baltimore, glad to see people from our city make it to the big leagues. I'm gonna be honest, I watched the first episode with the expectation that it was going to do nothing but demonize police officers, but after watching the first episode and listening to this podcast I see you guys understand that the issue of police brutality isn't always black and white. I love the work you're doing on the show, can't wait to see the rest!
great conversation. loved listening to this.
HOW CAN YOU GUYS START US WITH ONLY 1 EPISODE?!?! 🥺
Talk about cruel & unusual punishment 🤨
That ep. 1 has already set the tone
and this is going to be Great.
I can not watch it week to week though.
I’m going to have to do My best to skip a few weeks so I can watch @ least a couple in a row.
This is the type id like to watch 4 in a row and then a couple the next night after work.
Good job HBO on another 1.
Other than making Us wait like it’s the old days, all the way back in 2011 when We had to wait for our shows week to week.
C’Mon Mahn
When it’s this Good , I want it NOW .
JS
I had to say it again. With Love ✌🏿
Nah man I disagree, when the show is this good it’s better getting it an episode at a time. Each one deserves its own week of attention and conversation and maybe a rewatch before the next. This whole Netflix style full season release is only good for shows with a lot less substance/shorter running time imo.
@@jibeson9145 Agreed. I just saw that they had a podcast for the episodes. Just started hearing them. I’ve watched the first three twice each
@@jibeson9145
It’s too Good. I need a couple ep ea week. 😁
Only problem is that it pisses Me off more & more the further We get into it
The POS hopefully get what they deserve
Including beaten half to death
If not all the way.
Robbing families just trying to get by
So disgusting
Eye for eye is most definitely deserved in these cases
They better have paid all these families @ least half mil settlements.
Some deserve even more.
Really they all deserve much more
But I’m just trying to be realistic
Because I know they probably didn’t even get ish , even after all this.
So hype for the first episode. It was so great. Glad to have something on the level of the wire again
This isnt going to be on the level of the wire. I would say it already isnt 2 episodes in. This is gonna be about corrupt cops more then showing the cop and corner boys side of things
Bbc did a good audio series on the Baltimore GTTF. Great show
John's Baltimore accent makes me feel like I'm really back home in Maryland. It's crazy how well he gets into the character of Wayne.
Man I wish this series was longer
Amazing podcast and what an amazing First episode!!
The Spiritual Sequel to The Wire. Ed Burns and David Simon were like "We didn't have to make this up this time."
Great questions, D!
That first episode was great!!
I've just watched the first 6 episodes of We own this city, and I've gotta say it's great to see some of The Wire ❤️ cast grown up and in opposite roles, the show seems ok, enjoyed watching it 👍🇬🇧
Mad love for my hometown, Baltimore. Greatest city in America!
Great show
It’s crazy to see a period of life, portrayed on the screen. You just had to be there
I'm a cop and absolutely love this show.
JB is so amazing!
Je suis une grande fan de Jon Bernthal, un grand acteur !
tremendous
Great
Anyone else notice the safe scene in the newest episode? That was weebays basement...where he had all them fish tanks. He was obsessed with fish.
Anybody knows the music when Wayne is on patrol and smashes the guys bottle?
8 producers for a podcast? SheeeeeT
متى تنزل الحلقه الاولى
On HBOMAX already today
*Everyone who reads this, we don't know each other and probably never will but I wish you all the best in life and all the luck in the world* 🗣️🗣️👈 😊😊😊😊
Ameen🤲🏿
Wow see how the badge brings out the worst in those whom are suppose to protect and service the community ....policing has really changed because how can someone who dont understand the area police the area
I never knew what happened they killed that cop
I feel sorry for jon he always gets cast as a hardcore psycho. He honestly seems like a nice guy.
Shows how good he is
The Wire, I axe …
I caught that, too.
I counted 7 wire characters
Yup and more to come!
Let’s be clear this show can’t hold a candle to The Wire. The acting and the believability of the characters makes The Wire still holds up to this day. I’m actually surprised Simon has his hand in this, I wasn’t impressed with the writing and the actors were just ok. Maybe it will grown on me with upcoming episodes
I think its just a completly different show. Anybody expecting season 6 of the wire will be disapointed
First episode was ok but lets be honest 2 episodes in and we know this isnt going to be quite as good as the wire but still good
Why compare to the wire ? 6 part series can’t compare to 5 season show …
First
Next
Defund police
Its worked great for the west coast lol
This is woke or not??
Do you always need people to spoon feed you buzzwords to get outraged about?
@@emilybenson6399 yes
“This is woke or not??” 🤡
you straight out of Idiocracy or nah?
@@Bxndz-tz4qe they just blindly regurgitate this word over and over. It literally has no meaning at all now.
This is John Bernthal and a bunch of supporting actors that were terrible. Good production but Hawaii 5O caliber acting and directing.
This one might garner a few cancelled subscriptions for HBO.
Lololololol no
This show sux, it trys too hard. Stopped watching after 20 mins.
It’s too dialogue driven In my opinion. That was the same issue I had with the wire. I think shows that show you more are better.
It's not just a show it's based on true facts give it another try
