The Take great video! Can you do one analyzing witches in Mythology and pop culture? There have always been dark and light versions of witches portrayed and still are. Like the two Sabrina shows, Witches of East End, Charmed, Salam, Wizard of Oz, the movie about witches who ate children, and more.

I almost think that we're fascinated with mermaids in the same way that we're fascinated with vampires or werewolves, in that they represent a sort of missing link between human and animal, and I think in some ways, mermaids are to women what werewolves are to men. Another thing that makes mermaid stories so powerful is that mermaid is an outsider looking in and that itself is very powerful story for all times
Yeah they have turned vampires from blood sucking predators into sparkly defanged sex objects which is pretty much exactly what they did to mermaids. I'm tired of this bullsh*t! Bring back the man eating mermaid stories! Everyone knows love stories are the most lame and borring type of story that exists and I'm so mad and bored to tears with hollywood sexualizing monsters.

Fun fact: In the original Greek mythology, the sirens were half-woman and half-bird (hence, the beautiful singing voice). Somehow, over time, the siren and mermaid legends merged together.
I love sirens, their story is super interesting going from looking for Persephone to losing a singing contest with the muses to losing their feathers to ending up devouring men in an island covered with their victims' bones... like, wow
Fun fact: in Italian we call both of them "sirena" and people would just associate the word with the concept of marmade

It's the same thing with French we call it 'sirène' and the little mermaid just translate to 'La petite sirène' so when I begin learning English I was really confused to what difference is between a siren and a mermaid
The light version of mermaids: attractive but unaware of it, elements of both born sexy yesterday and manic pixie dream girl, a metaphor for the naive, virginal woman, whose sexuality relies only on men.
The dark version of mermaids: attractive and aware of it, uses it for her own pleasure and benefit, a metaphor for the worldly, ungullible woman, who owns her sexuality -- which is why she's turned into a maneater monster, who scares the crap out of men.
On the other hand, the movie Aquamarine is very underrated. To explain why without going into spoiler territory, it deconstructs some of the tropes surronding mermaids and it's quite ahead of its time.

i am surprised she didn't talk about it ether, especially the fact that the mermaid power comes from a magical cave pool during a full moon, and can turn guys into the very rare merman.
Oscar Wilde wrote a short story called 'The Fisherman and his Soul' where a human male gives up his soul to be with a mermaid, against the advice of his priest and everyone else. Most definitely a metaphor for Wilde's own conflicting thoughts about being gay.

As for The Little Mermaid, I've seen it criticized for giving Ariel a childish or unworthy/ unfeminist goal of making Eric fall in love, although he knows nothing about her. But her being mute doesnt change the fact that she is a curious, thoughtful person full of adventure. Aka: how others perceive you does not define who you are, and enjoying something others deem unworthy does not make you less than or overshadow your other powerful attribute. Two lessons that I judge both empowering and feminist.
Yes! I had that same revelation earlier today after starting this vid. It does fall perfectly within that trope.
Welp, Paris, even with the fact that you did give Princess Ariel praise, it’s a good thing you didn’t get upset when people criticized the protagonist of The Little Mermaid (1989)! Personally, I do see why people don’t like her, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that she is a character that has as little redeeming qualities as The Emoji Movie characters.

I remember reading the original Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale of the The Little Mermaid as a child and crying my eyes out because of how tragic and beautiful the ending was.

Me too!! I read it at school in the 1st grade and I was so confused. As I watch the Disney version first. I read it twice then after school I went to libary check out the book but this one had her turn into a weird air spirit and I was even MORE confused.
I have a love hate relationship with the Disney version. I love it, but I hate that they sugar coated the ending.

I read it too when I was a child. I didn't cry, but it was one of the strongest emotions I ever had. The moment when she gives up her voice (in both versions) still gives me chills.

Funny; i was just thinking that selkies could be framed as a third possible iteration of the broader mermaid myth, since in most of the tales of them i've seen, a man steals a selkie's skin so he can force her to remin on land and with him.. Ursula vernon's short story 'jackalope wives' plays with that selkie myth, albeit in a desert context.

I'm surprised you didn't tackle the other spectrum of the mermaid stories where the mermaid deliberately leaves the man. There's many folklores recorded in the 19th century where the mermaids leaves the men after they settles with him, in particularly when they had children. The tales of Melusine is one of the famous examples.
If you go into the Irish version which are the sidhe they don't like being captured at all and they will leave as soon as they can get their Pelt back because mermaids have like otter pelts and stuff.
And they'll leave their kids and husbands behind they don't care

Tritan had no problem with Ariel dating in the Disney Cartoon. What he had a problem with was her going after what he considers a killer's heart.
Still applicable to real life seeing many fathers and parents in general do not want their children being with partners they disapprove of solely based on generalizations despite being okay with their child dating someone they do approve of
I'm still waiting for a big budget adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga, that I know will never come. In that one, mermaids can easily live on land, but they retain their youth and beauty by eating young human women, their actual forms are monstrous. But if a human eats their flesh, they gain immortality. It's SO good, and nobody really seems to know it.
I love the Mermaid Saga! I've seen the anime and OVAs, but they both felt like very surface level adaptations to me. I'd love to see an adaptation that explores the manga more thoroughly.

I love Mermaid Saga as well! One of my favorite story arcs was one that revealed there are multiple types of mermaid, and that some eat other mermaids of a different type, especially when pregnant.

The girl that plays Rikki does the last 2 episodes of Mako Mermaids and when Ondina and Weilan. 2 sea born mermaids are talking to Rikki in the Mako moon pool, Ondina knows that Rikki is a land girl turned mermaid but says “your just like us a Mako Mermaid”. Just because the H20 girls are humans magically turned mermaids they are still mermaids.
@@misticadavis thats Mako Mermaids though. Not H20. What im saying is, this video is about the personality of mermaids. Whereas H20, the mermaids were human beings who turned into mermaids, so culturally, they are still human beings, they act like them. Its different from actually growing up a mermaid.

Very true I agree with you about that. In the dialogue between Rikki,Ondina and Weilan. Rikki explains how difficult it was going from a normal teenage girl to a mermaid. But I agree with you. Rikki even explains how she had 2 friends with her when they changed and how it was about keeping the secret and it was “Us 3 against the world” and when Weilan asks “what happened to her friends?” Rikki says “We grew up, found other interests. Even mermaids move on” and Ondina says “You miss them don’t you? When you were swimming on the reef with your friends didn’t you feel like you were sisters? Imagine losing over 100 sisters. You were drawn here, your just like us a “Mako Mermaid”.

In Mako when Zak the (merman) his girlfriend Evie gets turned into a mermaid she calls mermaids “gill monsters” and wants to be changed back by the real mermaids and is even more reluctant to swim as a mermaid then Cleo in H20. Cleo was afraid of the water but Evie is a professional diver.
there needs to be a movie portraying mermen unironically. not as a parody of mermaids to be mocked for their "cringey awkwardness", but a serious portrayal of badass mermen (aquaman doesn't count since he has legs and not a tail)

i'm agree that we need a more positive and good representation of mermen, but is not necessary to potray them as badass sea warriors to make them serious, it would be just a way to keeping the toxic, outdated stereotypes of masculinity, they should just be potrayted as a cool, free-spirited creature, a symbol of freedom and charm, The Thirteen Year is the perfect example of that, we need more merman representation like that

Oh! I came across an interesting analysis concerning the tradition of mermaids and their mirrors!
So in most stories, mermaids and beings from the sea usually have an object that "fulfills" them, like a comb, mirror, necklace, and for selkies, their seal coat. If you take it away, *she will lose her free will*, so that makes mirrors a really important object.
Most of these myths generally end with the mermaid finding the precious objects and returning to the sea, leaving a husband and child behind, as usually they were forced into these relationships, and thus have no obligation to want to stay. (Sometimes they take their child, though.)
Also, mirrors represent water (the ocean, the river, a lake, atc, all of them can work as a natural mirror) and have a more deeper meaning than just the mermaids admiring their own beauty. The mirrors can be used for magic and as a window to other worlds and tend to represent wisdom, can be used in astral travel, meditation, divination, scrying, and even protection: a ward that looks like a mirror on the outside reflects all negativity and keeps light and positivity on the inside. And most importantly, mirrors symbolize *truth* - seeing things clearly. My favorite example is Sailor Neptune/Michiru Kaioh. While not exactly a mermaid, she is representative of the sea, and she possesses her Deep Aqua Mirror as her important talisman, and the mirror can show one's true self, can be used for scrying, divination, and predicting the future.
It means that, for a mermaid, as strongly related to water and its power, looking at herself in the mirror is like looking at their true self: we see feelings, the past, and the things we did and how that changed us.
Then they're used for divination, astral travel, meditation and such, but also introspection and shadow work as well. Such as Ursala's dark magic through her own reflective surface, which is her crystal orb (??).

I don't even know where to begin. Kids don't only have mothers but also fathers and it is 100% ok if a kid stays with their father. Especially if the mother didn't want the child in the first place (as you suggested). Why is it better for a kid to stay with a mother that didn't even want them and takes them away from the other parent than to stay with their father? I hate that general attitude, it's so ancient. Please think about it.

@@cherusiderea1330 depending on the age of the kid, relationships, and even sex, sometimes it's better for the child to stay with the mother. Of course other times it is better to stay with the father. Both are valid and good for the child.

The little mermaid is actually a metaphor of Andersen's story. He was gay and in love with a prince. It was a story that could never end well and the prince was actually in love with a princess and married her.
Can y’all do a video about Ariel, specifically one similar to your stop blaming the victim video for Cinderella. Maybe something like stop underestimating Ariel, or stop dream shaming Ariel. Yeah she became crazy about a guy and the movie had problems for young people just like any, however she also values having freedom, curiosity, adventure, and she is really determined to get what she wants, people don’t think about this but if Ariel would not have gone to Ursula to get legs, Ursula would have never put herself in the position to be defeated and at the end the souls Ursula has trapped that become free when she dies, would stay trapped.

Hey McKay I do prefer the deleted alternate ending over the ending in the final film.
Granted, the latter isn’t bad. It’s got good action and suspense, but as you said, Ariel doesn’t ever apologize for her actions like she does in the deleted scene.
Also, if it makes you feel better, at least the ending of “Splash” inverts the ending of “The Little Mermaid” by having GUY give up everything (his home, his family, his friends, his job, his species) in order to be with the mermaid he loves 🎶under the sea🎶.
If you ever watched the little mermaid tv series as well, that shows more of Ariel's personality where yes she's a rebel and impulsive but she can also be very smart and resourceful. She's also very caring and nurturing and helps take care of many under the sea misfits and becomes friends with them :) She's a very sweet character :)

Best video ever! Ariel was my favorite Disney Princess and still is and this video completely captured why. She's fun loving, courageous, wild, smart, sweet, sassy, and unapologetic herself. Also loved Aquamarine for the same reasons and the movie Splash. You captured the mythology, stories and characters beautifully. I like the analyzed the "light" and "dark" mermaids. I also loved H2O that show was a coming of Age story about three very different girls growing up. The movie Sea Creature was really good and showed the alluring version of the mythology, while the character was also a dark monster who, like Miranda, wanted to use humans to procreate. Because of Ariel, I use to fantasize being a mermaid when I was little. I dressed up as Ariel every Halloween and I pretended to have fins when I took a bath.

They totally ignored how Hollywood turned a man eating predator into a sex object. Just like what Hollywood did to vampires by turning them into sparkly defanged sex objects. So sick of the borring and lame mermaid love stories. I want them to bring back the man eating monsters! Because that is what mermaids are. They are wild untamable predators who can be controlled and owned by no one. Instead Hollywood turned them into slutty manic pixie dream girls.

Amazing. The rusalka from Slavic mythology is another interesting take on the mermaid myth. She’s both feared siren and tragic figure that ends up killing the men she lives by dragging them to the depths.

The in-betweenness of mermaids that makes them reflective of teenhood is also the reason why they're so popular amongst trans people
Ever since I was little, I always wished the mermaid got more agency in these sorts of stories. I remember watching The Little Mermaid up until the part she became a human, then walking out because it got "boring." Now that I'm older, I feel like the problem is the fact that this mystical creature always has to change herself for what she wants instead of being embraced by the world (either her world or the human world) for who she is. It's really quite a sad message to women- mermaids embody free-spiritedness and seeing the beauty in everything, but they also embody fulfilling a sexual male fantasy. I'd like a mermaid story where humans aren't involved, maybe even a love story between two merpeople. Let us be part of HER world for a change.

god, your analysis is spoken in so much depth and refers to many eras in time where mermaids were believed to be either evil or lovable. this metamorphosis of thoughts over a sea creature shows how different adaptations made us as an audience think differently. whilst ariel is seen as a loving, youthful mermaid, sirens are a pirate's nightmare. how different yet interesting.

Loved this video! It seems like there are a lot of parallels between mermaids and witches throughout history. Mainly, a simultaneous fear, celebration, and sexualization of independent women. So cool to see the history of mermaids and their different iterations. The Take always delivers!

There's a idiomatic difficulty in the subject. Siren is what you described, but here we are talking about mermaids. In spanish only the word "sirena" exist and is use for both cases. And for what I know this mess is not new, as the references to this creatures were in greek and latin originally .
Mermaids are not sirens, sirens are not mermaids. They're two completely different things.

Amazing video essay, you could talk in depth for hours about the mermaid metaphor and lore. I think filmmakers need to make more mermaid movies.
This is a cool video but, I do think it's weird they talk about "the elaborate swimming sequences that became popular in Hollywood" as if this was a trend that a bunch of people/movies did. No... It was just Esther Williams... Only Esther Williams... Literally, nobody else did those sequences in Hollywood except Esther Williams (the modern clip of "Hail Caesar" shown is a reference/tribute to Esther Williams). Esther Williams' movies were extremely popular but, they should've just said that. Not act like she was just one of many who was a knock-off of Annette Kellerman. (Even though she played Annette Kellerman in "Million Dollar Mermaid", Esther Williams very much has a legacy of her own as "America's Mermaid").

I think part of why people are so drawn to merfolk is because we long to explore their world as much as they want to explore the land.
Mermaids/men want to explore another world and learn of their own choice.
Sirens seem to just want to eat, bewitch, and return to the sea. Aka the bare minimum of survival.
But that’s just my understanding
I love your takes on Disney's classic animated films. It's a lot of fun to hear a fresh perspective on the movies I grew up with. I'd really love you hear your take on some of the female Disney characters that aren't princesses or villains. For instance, The Rescuers has two great examples of strong Disney heroines. Penny enables and assists with her own rescue at a point where no human adults are trying to help her anymore, and Bianca is a brave, daring, compassionate adventurer who is still a very feminine character. Can you do videos on other mythological creatures? Like “ What about Dragons?” Dragons had been told countless stories and their own share in movies as well. Dragons had gone thought many chances thought out the ages. Like fire-breathing beasts that burned down villages and need a knight in shining armor to slay to be beast friends to children.

Honestly I see myself in the merpeople, and not just because I love the ocean. Andersen's Little Mermaid was also based on his own experiences with unrequited love and transition, from child, to singer, to lower-class writer, to famous author. He also dealt with unrequited love with women and with a man in at least one instance, so that just makes the mermaid's pining all the deeper and more real. Honestly, I can understand where the mermaid is coming from, even if my desires are somewhere on the opposite end of the spectrum: giving up my legs for a tail and foregoing the rules and restrictions of humanity, and, me being gay, the chance to freely experience male x male love.
Mermaid: "Oh another mermaid pup, I'm going to go ask him if he lost his pod." *Gets a little close*
Mermaid: "Oh it's one of those humans that dress up like us."
Maybe a mermaid is the embodiment of a dream come true a beautiful girl who, not knowing the standards and ways of living on earth, then is always authentic. But some dreams can become nightmares too.

YES! I have had an obsession with mermaids since ever. I love that you touched on the symbolism Mermaids hold for puberty, sexuality and coming of age, as well as transgender transition and belonging. I feel like SPLASH is such a great film, no doubt an 80s classic, but gets wipe away in the huge status of the Little Mermaid, when many of the scenes, and motifs are presented in Splash first! Also, for a mid 80s film... that tale Daryl Hannah wears really holds up, it's beautiful and her swimming scenes are so pretty to witness. She really transformed herself, and she spent hours in that tale, now that's method acting! Credit where credit is due!

@@beethovensfidelio Apparently Ariel was originally Blonde. Touchstone Pictures made Splash, and they are a subset of Disney. The iconic scene where Ariel rising to the surface and the background is sparkly from the water happens in Splash first. Splash has a deleted scene with a Sea Hag/Witch. Splash's ending of them swimming to an undersea castle society, looks like the one we know in The Little Mermaid. Splash ofc is inspired by the original Hans Christian Anderson story, but a lot of the visual elements in the animated film take place in Splash which came out 5 years before hand- and frankly overshadowed it.
