@@krane15 As your weight increases your calves get massive on their own because of standing on your increased body weight and walking on it too
The truth is walking a lot, climbing stairs, treking mountains or incline walk or farmer walk all built solid and massive calves
Even If you focus on the calf raises 3 times a week you will still get great results

I use to try my best to hit calves at the gym but I never really saw much progress. I'm sure I neglected them in comparison to my other major body parts though. But I eventually really got into the hobby of backcountry backpacking up steep mountains and my calves grew so damn big.

doing slow jogs at high incline for about 1-2 miles on leg days before the workout will make the legs grow like tree trunks, people neglect a lot of their leg muscle potential by ignoring the slow twitch.

The thing is. Calves are used to high intensity and high volume, because they are supposed to carry almost the whole bodyweight. So training them 3times a week with high rep range and high weights with full range of motion and training to failure or close to failure is a thing that will help develop calves.

  • @davidhayden1461

With calves probably more than any other muscle, it's absolutely body composition. Similar to biceps. I'm 6"2, long arms, legs, lanky, probably ectomorph. For me to even put fat on around my calves let alone muscle I'd have to be 30 kilos over my fighting weight for any noticeable increase in size.

this is bullshit. Calves are 90% genetic. There are bodybuilders on shit loads of gear who still can;t grow their calves, while there are skinny guys and girls who have never trained their calves directly who have massive calves.
You rarely see people who don;t train with other bigger muscles like chest or arms, but calves is different.

I would like to know what study Sal is referring to when he says that they are not more resistant to growing. Because the question is if there are people who do not have difficulty to grow muscles except for their calves because they have high calves, not if in average people can grow it. I mean there are a lot more people who get big calves by not training them and by simply walking, then there are people with biceps that are not training them for example.

I love the fact that they brought up basketball & jump rope and stuff because I lift and play a lot of ball and when I lift at a gym people ask me about my calves. I wish they would ask about other muscles but I'm not that developed in the upper body yet lol. People in the comments are saying "genetics," but like every basketball player I know has at least decent looking calves. Genetics probably play a role, but getting that constant tension from plantar flexion, dorsi flexion, ankle inversion eversion pronation supination from high velocity movements at a high volume will do it.

Most people lack the ankle mobility for a full ROM on calf raises and wonder why they’re shit.
Do the mobility work to get an inch lower, and see how much better it gets for you.
Add 5x20 calf raises, do some heavy Yolk walks, and do some full incline treadmill for cardio days.

I want to disagree. I think most people or at least a good portion of people have the genetics to back good calves.
Most obese people have great calves.
And I have never met anyone who actively works their calves.
I think its just a real challenge to grow impressive looking calves.

Ok but, how much of that size is still fat? It's like people who get a bariatric surgery... They have big arms indeed, but mostly fat and saggy skin.
Genetics play a major roll on everything, but also people use "genetics" as a excuse for poorly results due to a poorly way of train.

Been a lifter for 40 years. About 2 years ago I bought an old 1980s donkey calf machine with 500 lbs and a bar to add weight. I do slow movements with full range of motion. My one working set has me screaming with pain and my calves are pumped like never before. They just feel thicker for days and then I’ll punish them again. For me, I never got any growth with volume training on calves. Slow intensity has just worked better for me and my calves used to be nonexistent.
