If I threw it in the right spot they probably hit it lol. I’ve though about cutting a 3-4” piece off a stick and adding hooks to test my they’ll hit anything that moves theory.
Matt, what percentage of the fish you catch would you say are 16" or bigger? That "Fat Boy" looks very much like the Gaines Crippled Killer. Perhaps a bit more girth and length to the body. I noticed they seemed to hit it just short and miss. I get the same on the Crippled Killer. Lucky to get a 50% hook up rate on it. I really liked that Buzz Stick. It seemed to be the winner even before you lost the Fat Boy.
That percentage depends on the day and the stretch of river I’m on. This night I’d say 25% were over 16” but this stretch has a lot of smaller ones. There’s a couple stretches where I really don’t catch many under 16”. Once I figure out where the big ones prefer to hide that particular day I can reduce the number of small fish I catch too. Like this trip once I caught those couple nice fish from under the grassy banks I looked for other similar spots and only caught a couple more small ones. I figured that buzz stick would be the difficult one for me to catch fish on which is one reason I started with it. I often like to pause my lure in front of those spots where I think a fish might be hiding so I was a little worried that blade hanging down might spook them but they didn’t seem to mind.
Thanks so much! Love your videos! You are definitely a great fisherman! I've recently been really getting into frog fishing for bass, so these videos get my heart pounding!! Thanks for sharing them!
I've had other BPM baits ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 before and they've pretty much always came through for me with the suskie smallies here and even with the walleye and pike, but I realized I didn't have an "in-between" pattern so this junebug one fills that role in no problem. it pairs up magnificently with a junebug Zoom Z-craw Jr that was trimmed a couple millimeters before the hook slots and rigged sideways for that fatter panfish side profile while still being a nice'n'compact presentation, a real power-finesse bait. Hell, it was so pretty I even bothered to fotosketch the pic into a watercolor painting image just to show you it's beauty! Even the blades are really well made, sure, they're not of Hildebrandt-level exquisiteness but look at the bead's reflection on the colorado blade, definitely well-made! The only "problem" spot it had was a bald spot in the skirt but it was nothing that I couldn't easily fix with a but of tuggin'n'shiftin' with the strands for a couple of seconds, besides that it is pretty minty!
I'm not the owner or maker of those lures. But it felt good to hear you say "That's a good one on the BUZZ STICK" bet he felt amazing when he hear u say that
With a name like Steven king I'm surprised they weren't called Christine and fire starter. Lol great looking lures Steven. Are they available to purchase? Great video
I think that’s a great idea for future videos, having viewers sending in there homemade lures or modified lures for you to test on the rivers. I think you would have to get a bigger PO Box !!! Keep up the great videos. You are the best on you tube . Thanks for all you do.
I'm honestly a bit confused why no one ever made something like the Buzz Stick, it seems to make so much more sense than just a buzz bait and being able to have it float for pauses and change of pace is a great idea. That sub is on to something with that lure. I never throw the buzz bait so I know what I'm doing in my garage tomorrow choppin up some buzz baits and spook jr's. BTW you need to drag the pole under that grass every time you pass it that's just cool to see. Definitely would make a great series.
I've been watching your videos for a few months now. I really like your laid back approach to fishing. You fish just like I do and the videos are awesome dude. How cool was that someone sent you some lures that got the job done. New subscriber as of a few days ago.
What I really like about Matt's channel is that he somehow brings the peaceful nature of fishing into UA-cam. It's not easy to capture it, but he does it every video. To top it off he's a great fisherman. Good stuff
i've only watched a couple of your videos but i am becoming a big fan. i think its great how you did this for this guy. you seem like a very stand up guy.
This unnamed river is the model river for every Dept of Fish and Wildlife in the country. Clean, free flowing water, abundance of crawdads, hellgrammite, freshwater shrimp, and chub minnows, wild green vegetation rimming all of the shore and bank lines, and most importantly, a 100% catch and release river, all season. Then you have a river like this; twenty five to thirty five 17-22" smallies every fifty yards of river!

I make my own lures for Irish pike, perch, trout, salmon and sea fishing, and would be happy to have you try some out if you're interested? Your videos are spot on and I love those beauties you're catching.
Nice fishing, and nice lures. Keep up the great content. Also if I was trying to cast as close as you were to the bank I would have TONS of grass bass lol.
I really appreciate the creative approach you take to fishing, including multi-species trips, new lures, and hand-made lures. Fishing should be fun even when you're not fishing!
I have some lures and tackle that aren't home made but would like to see you trying to catch fish with just about anything.. I hate to do this to you but I'd like to see a challenge video with you using all the stuff that has never worked for me and see what you can do with it.

Could we ever fish together, catching nice smallmouth has always been something I've wanted to do on a river. Every once in awhile I'll target them on lake of the woods in early summer and sometimes even in the winter
i bet Steven is smiling ear to ear right now .
How would he not. Heck, even I’m blushing ☺️ 😊
Steve, you better start Mass producing your lures...👍
Dude, that buzz stick! Chatter up front.. they hit it hard! Great job Steven!
I'm not super aware of fishing news and stuff of that sorts, whose Steven
Good job on the lures Steven.
This was a gr8 vid big ty Pls do more like it
Nice homemade lures!
Dude u could string together a bunch of cut fingernails and paint them Chartreuse and add hooks and catch fish there 😂

Ur one of the only fishing youtubers that doesnt hold a fish out of the water and talk about it for 5 minutes. Always quick releases, mad respect to u
Yup, I always say I wish I could hold their heads under water for as long as they hold a fish out of water
Bass geek is really good I watch his channel a lot
@Spooks 95 lol..it is pretty funny...
Dude!! I hate when ppl do that it makes me so mad 😠 the fish is basically going in shock after awhile !!! Mad respect for you and Alex
Sorry, but me I eat the fish.

I don’t mind the excitement but its just relaxing
i know what you mean, some looks if they are on drugs or anything... but his videos are just nice to watch and 20 min are like 5 min
Truth very relaxing 😎
That’s funny, I thought the same thing!
Yes his vids are soxnice to fall asleep too

North Dakota looks lit for smallies
He's in Minnesota
i think you should try a video with the jackall gantarel or gantarel jr and see if you could muster up some fish.
Cool lure, how well would buzz stick work in Scandinavian waters. With Perch and pike being the "2 only attackers"
I’m sure the pike would be all over it. Not sure about perch, I think yours are a little different than ours. I’ve never caught a perch on topwater here but if you do there I’m sure it would catch them.
Love following the series. I would love to fish that river. Seeing this has me wanting to disappear for a week and make a trip north.
