11:58 I love how Nostalgia Critic Phantom was like "Sing marginally well." And then she just hits all the damn notes and I'm like...wait, no, she really is, holy, whoa, darling whoa, oh shit, OH DAMN WOW! YOU GO LADY.

-everyone should get a horse
Huh?

One more thing

What character was he portraying
@@trinitech6868 Devil Boner
We all know that person. “I’m done with you Fred Bullrock! I found my true match with Red Cowstone!”
Totally noticed that too. Devil Boner cracks me up.
"THE ORGAN MUSIC, IT MUST BE THE PHANTOM YO!"
Winner for best line of the video
@@Sonichero151 "One thing you got to know about a fandom: they rarely make any sense!"
Lost it at that part. Not even sure why.
I love Rob
I do prefer movie clips in NC reviews, but given UA-cam's increasing dickness I can't blame them for doing fully skit-based videos.
+WingedSnagret Idk. I do kind of like the skits. Then again I've always been a fan of skit comedy.
+WingedSnagret true
#WTFU
+WingedSnagret I still can. No clue why, but I'm still more pissed that NC than YT.
+WingedSnagret I give the guy serious props though
That moment where Phantom of the Opera has the same Rotten Tomatoes score as Batman vs. Superman.
what?
Batman v. Superman *literally* just came out. The scoring system in Rotten Tomatoes is based on how many critics gave it a positive review. BvS has 50 less reviews than Phantom at the moment, but a higher overall rating.
+uknownada True. BvS Rotten Tomatoes score will get higher soon
+☆KindredSpirit☆ I've heard that some of those reviews were from people who work at Marvel, or at least did at one point.
So...that's a thing you might consider.
+isaacplayer42 That's some of the stupidest bs I've heard. Every studio wants these movies to do well!! The better these movies do, the more people will want to watch, the more studios who make these movies can profit from it!! Stop spreading crap like this around, it makes you sound more stupid and misinforms every one else, jeez.
The horse was definitely my favourite character
well they are very practical.
Need to see more of it in future reviews
The horse is great
Bojack horsemen early days
That duet with Tamara and Beth was absolutely stunning. Despite the comedic effects brought on by the lyrics and the review, all jokes aside the singing in this is beyond impressive. Top props to Doug and the team for such a beautiful musical review
No one cares
I love it
That scene especially interesting cuz it’s the women playing Carlotta and Christine and we never got this moment between those characters in the original movie
You're tearing me apart, Christine!!!
@Marni Stone You betrayed me, i fed up with this world. WHY Christine WHY WHY.?! 😂
What a story, Giry
I did not kill the stagehand, I did not... oh hai Christine.
Christine: (close the door behind Raul)
Raul: Waths are you doing?
I couldn't breathe the second 'Michael Crawford Phantom' started singing. My hand was not at the level of my eyes.
Woman: "It portrayed everything good about the book!"
Critic: "Somebody read the book?"
Me: "...there was a book?..."
I'm so glad I'm not alone!
Hey! I read the book way before hearing about the musical.
Yep there was a book. I knew it already, but you’re reading a comment from a person who is desperately in love with the musical and is a huge fan of it. I started reading the book but then I was bored out of my mind. Now, I saw the musical first.
@@mayashimizu8241 Same here
I've read the book dozens of times!
I feel a little offended that he included Johnny Depp in this list of "Actors that can't sing". I thought Depp really did well in Sweeney Todd.
So did Doug, apparently. I get why Depp was included here, but he did do well. Guess it was just to add to the list.
I think the point was that musicals should prioritise casting based on singing ability rather than recognition. I don't think it was anything against Depp, just that he should be cast because he can sing, not because he's famous.
Frisbee And Into The Woods!!!
I think it was more "actors who couldn't/never sang before being cast in a musical."
I feel like Depp really worked as Sweeney too, his sort of weird mix of gravel yet high pitch felt appropriate.
...Did...did she actually hit those high notes?!
Vordox yes, but with little breath behind it and I'm pretty sure she hurt herself while doing it.
Just like the movie
Also if you don't hear autotune in it like the beauty and the beast remake then yeah she hit the high notes
Agreed i cant even do that
No
Doug really is such a good actor all things considered. When he's playing Chester, its pretty easy to forget it's the same person as Nostalgia Critic they're played so different, especially when they are together in a sketch.
Nicole Eckert ok it is official, nostalgia critic should not ever make musicals they are always completely stupid and uncalled for, this was worse than the moulan rouge review!
what about devil boner?
Why do i get the feeling im talking to a guy enforcing some stereotype
Not sure which one
Martin Rebro trust me, I like musical movies and Doug Walker has a unbelievable voice, but if you are going to review a movie, review the movie, make the musical later separate, or in this case not at all.
Martin Rebro plus I never was a big fan of devil boner I can definitely do without him
Every time they purposefully change one of the notes, my soul gets crushed a little
Same. But, gotta avoid Copyright police somehow :( They're just doing the best they can with what they can get away with.
We watched that movie in school and afterwards for OVER TWO YEARS it became a thing that during break time and sometimes when nothing was happening during lessons someone would loudly shout "SING!" and then a random assemble of other people would scream in the highest pitch they could reach. Ah, good times.
Even 13 year olds who didn't even understand the english language could figure out it wasn't good.
that’s beautiful
THATS AWESOME!!!
Gosh that’s amazing
I really want a director with a darker style to take a crack at a film version of Phantom.
As long as it's not Burton. Though to be fair, he could probably make it work.
There's like 30 adaptations of Phantom already existing.
+Tate Hildyard Exactly. What's the harm with adding one more?
Oh, I think I might have misread your comment when I replied.
guillermo del toro i think made a hella weird version of it?? its on chez lindsays video about phantom of the opera check it out
That was nowhere near as satisfying as I hoped it would be.
agreed
Just like the superman v batman movie
+Alex Heichou I know, I was so excited about this review and I couldn't finish it, I was so bored.
+Alex Heichou I loved it, but I admit that the lack of Brentalfloss really brought it down.
+Alex Heichou That's what his review for Moulin Rouge was for me.
Me: “Love Never Dies?” They have to be exaggerating.

It's going on tour! Aren't ya excited???
Oh dear lord *facepalms*
Beneath a moonless sky and beauty underneath, ok live never dies the song were all good
But the play itself
Batman and robin had more than it had to offer
The 25th anniversary version was probably my favorite "film" adaptation just because of the emotional investment and style that's strong throughout the whole movie.
Literally how I was introduced to the musical. I’m so grateful I picked up that dvd at the library
I love that one
Agreed!
Best Phantom, best Christine. Best casting over all. And the scale of it all felt so awesome and real!
Wow. Tamara can actually sing. Should put her in more musical reviews.
Dude, Doug Walker has a lot talent and hired talent in his shows. It's easy to look at these videos and think meh I could do that, but their is a lot that go into them. It doesn't shock me that Tamara Lynn Chambers can sing. There's no telling what other talents he has yet to pull out
That's now Tamara.
John Doe Hyper fangirl and the janitor are. Beth sings better, though.
Are you denying Tamara’s singing talent how dare you jerk 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Can you do Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods?
omg yes Sweeney Todd🌸🌸🌸
Sweeney Todd is one of my favorite movies
don't think that's going to happen, as he likes Sweeney Todd.
Calmly R3kt Gaming Not as good as the "original Brodway production"
Sandro Swen maybe a positive review
(I love that movie so much honestly)
When the Chart Guy says “I ATE THE SOUP!” I was dying
There was a horse in the novel. He was called Caesar. He was a trained stage horse, the best of the opera stables. And the phantom stole it early in the novel. He appeared during Christine’s first abduction for the same job than in the movie, and after that, not a sign.
Is that her actual singing voice? She's fucking amazing!
@Chloe Richardson why?
Whose singing voice are you talking about?
C'mon, Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd was good :0
Exactly
eh...
I loved Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd! He actually took several singing lessons and sounded great!
He's right about the rest of the celeberities haha
+Killer-Toni THat entire movie was bad, or at least compared to the actual thing. Everything including singing was so muted one would think it was done by Tim Burton... oh wait...
+Killer-Toni Okay, Critic points out that Hollywood tends to cast celebreties in musical movies even though they had no obvious singing experience. With Johnny Depp however, he actually was a rock musician for a while as a kid before becoming an actor, so he had SOME experience.
Alan Menkin on the other hand...
NC's impression of Michael Crawford is actually some amazing shit
". . . Brought to you by Joel Schumacher."

We have to make sure no one remembers
Beth's voice is great
Tamra's voice is fantastic
Doug's voice is HEAVENLY
The complete opposites of Emmy Rossum, Minnie Driver and Gerard Butler. Even when Doug parodies Butler, he sounds better by a huge mile.
Beth is a little nasally for my taste, but they are surprisingly good singers.
Aren’t Beth and Tamra the same person?
@@lazarus9581 no?
MemesR wou She’s from Shark Jumping channel. They do reviews too.
Yeah I think channel awesome kinda disproved their own argument with the "everyone singing at once isn't funny" thing because their version is fucking hilarious!
"You've betrayed me, I am fed up with this world" that was fucking amazing, I can't stop laughing
I understood that reference LOL! 😂
I actually really love these musical videos. Also, I think it'd be interesting to see a video like this on Into the Woods.
Yes!
Hell flipping yes
Actually Tom and Jerry in episode name Phan-Tom of the Opera please do the new tom and jerry show review pls
YES PLEASE!
What about Sweeney Todd?
He really did Gerard's phantom voice really well. He captured the "trying too hard to sound cool and sexy" accent that Gerard did for the movie.
The production value is strong with this one....
That's why I love Nostalgia Critic
Too bad the writing, acting, and singing are awful.
As is usual for his Musical Reviews
Hey Johnny Depp was freaking awesome in Sweeney Todd! So was Helena Bonham Carter!
BeanBag343 THANK YOU!! I just watched this movie yesterday with my girlfriend and I thought it was beautiful
I thought it was a good movie, but I enjoy the musical with George Hearn more, especially since johnny drop can't really sing
@parker the shark you question the work of the mighty Burton?!
parker the shark bruh he’s literally in a band
Not vocally

Damn the effort put into this is amazing
Watching this Phantom version during the pandemic. It's awesome. It reminded me that I need to go back to work.
Damn Dough is a good singer
+Milan Judák Almost as good as Gerard Butler :P
b1merio
xD
+Milan Judák +b1merio Dough? Is he related to Gerard *Butter*?
Ahahahahahaaa.....I'll see myself out.
+Milan Judák Were...... were they singing to the tune of Sins of the Father?
+Milan Judák Well, he is a trained tenor.
Again if they would have casted the faves Sierra Bogess and Ramin Karimloo then the movie would have done 10 times better. I mean they played them for the 25th and that is being considered the Phantom movie
Also love the Love Never Dies roast in there
*Whispers to the guy besides me*
Should i tell her that Ramin Karimloo has a silent role in this movie?
@@ezelfrancisco1349 Yeah, as a photo of Christine's dad.
No wonder she's so confused during the "Wandering Child" segment...
Ezel Francisco I rewatched it recently and saw him thx for the heads up 😁
Joshua Seagondollar NO WAY. AWESOME!!!
And Hadley Fraser. Please. He was just as amazing as Ramon and Sierra, and the 2011 musical wouldn’t be the same without him. Why does everyone keep forgetting him and his character? Raoul was technically a freaking lead in the book!
Critics: Butler, what’s with your singing voice? It’s just madness.
Butler: Madness? THIS IS OPERA!!!!
*hears NC's imitation of Michael Crawford*
oh i'm sure he's just exaggerating for comedy's sake
*looks up and listens to the real Michael Crawford*
oh my god he wasn't exaggerating...
Actually, he was.
+puppyhowler
You sure? Because honestly, Peter Cetera sounds more high-pitched than Crawford.
so, a few years ago, I saw Phantom live on Broadway, and was blown away by the actor playing the Phantom (I think he was the first black person to play the part?); he had a deep, booming voice that commanded your attention, which extended to his singing! So, first thing I did when I got home was look up the official album for the play, and guess what I heard?
some whiny little pissant that, while a good singer, doesn't portray his character at all.
I looked up Michael Crawford but I never can find the squeak
Logan Wynn Erik isn’t supposed to have a deep commanding voice tho, if I remember correctly in the book it describes his voice as soft, almost like a woman’s.
"I have a horse pointing a sword at me and THAT makes more sense than anything you just said." I love that XD
LOL hope we see the horse again
Is no one going to point out that Beth's voice is actually really nice?
Undyne I know ! Who is she?
Undyne She'd do better in a jazz environment
Someone: "Oh, the Phantom of the Opera is your favorite musical? What do you think of the movie?"
Me: "Oh the visuals are great! Absolutely beautiful! I love how they translated it to the screen!"
Someone: "What did you think of the music?"
Me: " . . . "
Me: "The visuals are great!"
I thought the music was beautiful. Apparently everyone is saying the Phantom can't sing great though, so I must actually be tone deaf because I loved his voice.
@@inkheart151 It's kind of like Anne Hathaway in "Les Miserables," TECHNICALLY not on point, but her performance helps you not care too much about it. Although some really hold the torch high for the stage production version and view Gerard Butler as the worst thing ever to happen to the vocals. Personally, I like his interpretation, and I really do not like most of the stage versions, they just sound...strange.
@@inkheart151 I loved the music too, and I was impressed by the voices, the Phantoms wasn't the best in the world but at least he can do it without autotune and be understandable XD
Julianne Pearson I loved the voice to
"Hey! You gonna feed me or what?!" I'm dying of laughter!!! 😆😅
Ok I agree that Gerard is definitely not the best Phantom. But you have to give him credit for being able to hit those notes in his songs, for an amateur he wasn't terrible. It wasn't cringeworthy but if a Phantom on stage sang like that I wouldn't be so hyped. In conclusion, he was fine for the movie.
I’m sorry, but if Phantom of the Opera wasn’t a critical hit when it first premiered on Broadway, why did it win Best Musical at the Tonys?
I still die laughing when I see that everyone wore a phantom masks and Rob chose a batman mask
I'd like to buy the soundtrack of the review, but my favorite parts of the songs are missing. For an instance, on Fandumb of the Opera, there isn't the parts I always like to sing along, "Sing, marginally well." "Actually, that's a little too good." "No, you're sounding interested in what you're singing. Don't do that!" "Stop! You're singing like a person people would actually pay money to listen to! Remember your training!"
That's because in the show, pretty much the song is pre-recorded, especially the high notes at the end. The "sing my angel" parts are sung live. I think they were trying to imitate how it works on the actual show.
I have this problem with every single movie soundtrack I think about getting. I have to have the dialogue every time.
I can actually do that, but nobody wants to see me do that. And I don't need autotune!
Omg the part where Michael Crawford and Gerard Butler are doing a burn sing off is my favorite part 😂 makes me laugh so hard in this review
Baaallllsaaack
BAWWWWLLLSAAACKKK
😄😄🤣 35:00
In Michael Crawford's defense, Weber wanted him to sing it that way lolol
Damn Tamara's singing voice is amazing! Actually everyone is pretty good in this.
Were the melodies all wrong to avoid copyright, or as a jab at the movie?
both
+Cloverskull Yes.
All of the above!
+Cloverskull Any music has to be altered JUST enough to avoid copyright issues. And NC is having enough issues with copyright as it is right now. As well, good parody. Who did the ....I guess you can call it MIRROR writing....the opposite to what it was in the movie. Right is left.
+Cloverskull yep
Watch it get flagged. Great skit even tho i wish it had movie clips.
DOUG! If you ever need it: WE ARE WILLING TO DONATE!! Seriously, you are that awesome.
+00WhiteBlade It's already been flagged, before it was even published, despite it having nothing but original music specifically written for the review, and publicly available (IE out of copyright) music.
Guessing they got the ContentID crap removed from it though before pushing it out.
God damn, Beth and Doug should perform in actual musicals, they’re really good
"The phantom was a tragic character, not some emo canary" You sure? Because he's pretty emo in the book as well.
also Fairy tail endings? only difference from the book is that he died the rest is the same.
The line between emo and tragic is one composed of pure hammy acting.
@FriesWithRays bruh I don't even agree with myself anymore haha, movie is shite and the musical/book/1990 mini series are bomb!
My god this review is like watching a freaking movie in itself. Such high production values. Excellent job guys!
You have no idea how happy I am to see this one
+Cheyenne McLean Only difference,NC can actually can sing
What did she really hit that note that fucking nicely tho
Not really. It was weak and ended flat.
Caitlin Koi still better than the movie's performance, although yeah, it ended flat, at the beginning of the last part she was strong but didn't finish well.
When hitting a note a bit flat is really nice compared to how it was done in a big-budget movie, you know just how bad the movie is.
Better than in the film, but yeah, slightly flat
She had to make it imperfect somehow or we'd get suspicious
If they do another one of these musical reviews, they should review "Repo: The Genetic Opera".
Edit: Thank you to the person who liked this comment. I didn't expect anyone to find it.
This whole movie just seemed like a high school production to me because it's like ah yes the girl is doing pretty good, and then the male lead comes out and you know he was just some guy who decided to audition on a whim.
Wow, "Love Never Dies" sounds like the 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" of "literature"
MaidenofBagEnd it is
MaidenofBagEnd that’s a really good comparison
Love Never Dies was written before the cursed child.
Isn't _Harry Potter and the Cursed Child_ the _Harry Potter and the Cursed Child_ of "literature"?
MaidenofBagEnd it's worse and somehow more stupid
To people complaining about the review format - yes, i like the clip format too, like was said in the Jurassic World review, it lets judge what he is critiquing ourselves, *however*
1) This format is obviously done to however the copyright mess going on right now, it even says so in the review itself
2) Do you see the effort that went into making this review?! Its incredibly creative and we should appreciate that

The fire balls were actually in the book btw as was the horse which the phantom got in a stable hidden away and I do miss the Persian as well
Why does everybody hate this review? I personally think it's hilarious! It's one of my favorites so far! ^^
I don't hate it either. I actually think it's really really funny! However, I also think that this review had more potential, especially since this is a review we've been waiting for since probably even before the Moulin Rouge review.
+Mary McGinnis It's clipless, even though copyright prohibits a lot
Mary McGinnis mine to man amazing 😉
Mary McGinnis this is a great & awesome musical

Well played avoiding the copyrights sir. Well played indeed
The duet between Beth and Crazy Fangirl was pure genius
Hyper Fangirl not Crazy
Honestly I'm super happy that Movie Musicals are getting big again! However they should really cast people who can, you know, actually sing. I know they think star power will bring more people, which is true in many cases, but then the singing never sounds right. The Wicked movie better have great singers in it XP
Watch this get removed later on, damn UA-cam
#MakeUA-camGreatAgain
believe it or not, they got copyright claims for their original songs.
+TheGhostgodzilla wow fucking wow
Considering the Cinema Snob got a copyright strike on one of his midnight screening reviews which didn't even have footage or audio of the movie (I forgot which movie), anything is possible with UA-cam's copyright shit.

I love the part of the singing horse where he says I’m a sexy prince with all these cool-ass lines
I laughed so hard when he imitated Michael Crawford XD the first line killed me! XD
I was rolling too. I thought the Butler impression was enough but the Crawford one killed me all those high notes
Who knew Gerard Butler, who sucked so bad at the Phantom, sang the beautiful love song with Cate Blanchett in HTTYD2? Probably because playing a Viking chief suits his singing voice a little better...

@@bethelderkin 2 years later and i finally see that you're the woman who i am talking about. :O YOUR VOICE IS KILLER!
I really liked this movie to be honest.
I know it's not perfect but still I thought it was good.
Yes. There’s waaaaay worse musical adaptations out there
I really liked it too. Yes Gerard wasn't always on point with his singing, and sometimes Emmy reached too high and had a glottal stop, but I really liked it.
The emotion was amazing, and you know, they ACTUALLY used a 16yr old to play Christine (which apparently made Gerard suuuper uncomfortable in Music of the Night and Point of No Return)...
This review on my favorite musical is very amusing and entertaining. I disagree with the opinion on Gerard Butler's singing voice though. Is it the best singing voice in the world? No, but I don't think it's that horrible. He made the effort to get vocal training for the singing part and I applaud him for it. And I really thought Emmy Rossum was incredible! Not subpar at all. So beautiful!
wait a sec, there was a pizza guy one minute and then he's gone? what happened to the pizza guy? I need to know!
Nostalgia Critic's next musical review is going to be Sweeney Todd isn't it? P.S. Is it me or is Doug cinematography better than the film's?
It'd certainly be interesting to know about his thoughts of Burton's adaptation, but considering how harsh Critic's been on previous musicals, I fear that he isn't going to be so nice toward this one either. At least he likes the song *Pretty Women*
How would the skit go down, like they would talk about the movie, sure, but the skit must be eerily similar to the plot of the movie
+Askmolnet Id like to see a parody of that, but what to call it

+SupernovaAssassin I love the musical
Beth's a good singer but she sings off key like the entire video, but that's probably the joke
She's supposed to. They're making fun of the movie.
They also changed the key of the songs because she (understandably) can't hit the original notes
Good. You watched the obvious part of the obvious parody.
I love how badly the phantom mask fits his face

26:19 "Must be the phantom yo!" xDD
PS. Beth is Bae (^,^)
Beth really does have a great voice. When I heard her start singing, I was pleasantly surprised at the voice that came out of her. But Doug's parts, hahaha were what I imagine Gerard Butler's singing would have eventually turned into and it sounds like something he would say. It's funny because it's true, hahaha and I can't stop laughing at this. One of the best reviews/skits channel awesome has done.
Michael's portrayal of the auctioneer at the beginning was a masterpiece
Gerard Butler as the phantom???
*THIS IS OPERA!!* (kick)
Ramin Karimloo has the best voice as Phantom tbh
Yes.
Just yes.
I agree with you
Best phantom by far.
My vote goes to Gary Mauer
Ramin is probably the only Eric who can justify Love Never Dies
30:24--"Where is the Persian?"
YES!!!! Best line in the whole review. Daroga needs more love. He's one of the best parts of the book.
This was a fantastic--or should I say phantastic--review. Beth's voice is gorgeous, and I'm so glad you included someone with such knowledge of the book. Like she said, "Phantom" isn't the greatest novel in the world, but it's still a compelling, dark, and (no pun intended) haunting story. For me, I see it less as the sappy love triangle it often gets adapted as and more of a cautionary tale about what happens when an innocent child grows up believing he has no choice but to become the monster he's first assumed to be. In that sense, it reminds me a lot of stories like "Frankenstein" or "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". And as for the musical, while it's not the deepest adaptation, I still love it. The music is great and the combination of the story's melodrama with '80s cheese is just glorious. But "Love Never Dies" can get squashed by a chandelier for all I care.
Gothic literature has some oddly recurring themes.
Gerard Butler was in a band in his younger years, Emmy Rossum had been singing opera since she was 7, Patrick Wilson was a Broadway actor and this was his big gig. I actually liked this movie. I sing along to it, quite well I might add. And I have read the book. It's interesting...
I agree!!! The 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie was my first introduction to the book and the musical and I thought everyone sang quite well!
