Thank you for doing the walk, Gary. That is one over hill, over dale that I cannot physically attempt and it was great to see the perspective.

Gary has done it again. Fantastic walk and fantastic commentary...After reading civil war stuff I never understood redan and redoubt difference....so Gary you achieved your 'educate' objective today, right enough.

My second great grandfather was in the 47th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Vicksburg. He was wounded in the hand on 19 May 1863 during battle at Stockade Redan.

I enjoyed your video. My Great Great Grandfather was a Corporal with the Wisconsin 23rd at Vicksburg. Family story was that he was wounded and left on the field for dead. I did find records that showed he was mustered out and sent home and didn’t fight in any subsequent battles.

The topography at Vicksburg is insane. As you stated, photos or even video simply cannot do it justice. You have to see it for yourself. Truly an impressive place.

Been there many times,...thank you for the walk through! It's hard to imagine the fortifications/works and put them in perspective without a solid knowledge base. The photos are a great asset as well. My favorite visit was a midnight drive thru....on a full moon.....the place kind of talks to you. Thanks again!

I love this place if I were younger, for sledding, rolling down the hills etc. Beautiful site.

It keeps getting better! HOT TIP for app developers!: An augmentated reality compass app that would overlay cardinal compass points on video as it was being shot. It would change as the camera orientation changed. Now go do it! 🙂

Hey Gary, in a future video, can you show us a then and now of where the caves and dugouts were that housed the civilian pop trying to escape the union bombardment? I've never seen a good then and now based on the famous photo.

Thank you for that walk of scariness. Everything Civil War. I love to listen about. What I do not know. Is the locals perspective, the death & dying, the aid stations? The local impact? Great video.

Thanks for a great walking video! Hearing Gary explain the difference between a redan and redoubt reminds me of the Family Guy episode where Brian dates an older lady and he doesn’t understand her terms for old-fashioned furniture (chesterfield, davenport, divan)…

I'm curious as to the plants that would have been there at the time of the Vicksburg campaign. Were there any trees on the hills or in the gullies? Had the land been used as pastureland before the war? Was any of it farmed? I know that there were a lot of blackberries growing around Vicksburg, but I don't know if they would have been here or elsewhere. If here, the soldiers would have dealt with thorns in addition to snakes.

Nice walking tour. I’ve never been there before but it looks likely that it would take more than one or two days!!
I’m surprised that you would be afraid of Mississippi snakes especially since you have tamed the dreaded 12’ snakes in Gettysburg!! Ha!

I was there the day after Gary
The distance on the road from Logan's HQ to the Redan is close but that field is large.
