  • Ran the planer over a hunk of birch. Works pretty well. I know... the guard doesn't quite fit so I need to space it out a bit before I put it back on.

Mr. Hiebert, are you still happy with your LX26 purchase? And have you used it for any large scale projects that would show any issues someone wanting to purchase one could make a better decision based upon your experience?

I do like the LX26. The only knives I have for it are the standard planer style because my only planned use was for planing beams as they come off the mill. I've also planed a few slabs as well. I don't use it on a large scale but it certainly works for the reasons I bought it.
The only issue I've had with it is where the vertical lead screws anchor to the planer table at the bottom of the screw. There is a bushing there at they method of retaining that bushing is poor. This is a spot that they should really address. The other issue is a minor one but it's somethign that I would like to see Norwood develop. My unit is trailerable and there this no factory provided method for locking the planer in place like there is for the mill. I usually just throw a couple of straps over it but I did have one end of the planer jump the rail during transport one time. Therefor, I need to do a better job of locking it before transporting.
I only purchased a single, 8" wide cutting head. I've learned to leave the bolts that fasten the cutter head into the lower mounting plate loose so you can just move the head back and forth laterally by hand between passes. It will shift 10.5" so you can plane 18.5" with an 8" cutter in multiple passes.
I also purchased the 36" clip on bed extension. Although I don't use it to extend the cutting length of my mill, it was purchased just as a place to store the planer head while sawing so that i don't sacrifice bed length by having both heads mounted at the same time. I found that the heads can get closer together if you mount the planer with the operator side opposite the mill.
      Hope this helps

@@hiebertgrant hey Grant i just ordered one. I bought the extra cutterhead as i am exlusively planing at this point. I just wanted to confirm if i mount both heads i can do 16 inches per pass, is this so? Tks

@@blaketodd1208 I only have an 8" head but yes, I believe the two heads give you a 16" wide pass. If I want to go wide, I make multiple passes and just push the head over. I think there's 10" of slot so I can plane an 18" surface. I will admit that in my case, I don't use the planer as much as I had originally thought I would.
