    With most hobbies/professions it's a right of passage to buy lots of stuff you don't need to figure out what works best for you. It's easy to look back and say "all I needed to buy was X", but the fact is you had to burn through lots of stuff to find out what your X is.

      Yip, in the process of doing that now. Went through about ten electrics, before I found my three best. I might keep a few of those others, that are not expensive but are good, but I'm definitely feeling the urge to cull the herd, selling at least 30-40% of them, now I've found my best ones. Similar with basses, went through 3 to find the one I really like (Fender Vintera II 50s P Bass), the Mustang & Jazz Bass I like, but don't really love.

    Some people spend that much on Golf Clubs, some on Hot Rod car parts. If it's your hobby and the value doesn't depreciate and your bills are paid then it's all good. Hobbies can be expensive. The good news is that in the guitar world nowadays there are very inexpensive solutions that are incredible.

      Man, tell me about it. I've bought some REALLY good stuff that I absolutely loved (and hope to one day have back), but in every case, there comes a point where reality hits and I'm like..."I spent a lot of money on this gear and I'm still having a hard time piecing together a band to play with...why am I torturing myself and my wallet over this??"

  • @aaronashear3002
    @aaronashear3002 23 дні тому +4

    I've spent probably over 100k on gear, but I've also almost always sold at a profit, or breaking even. In the end, making gear trading a hobby, and even a side business has afforded me some keepers for low coin. It's also a lot of fun to dabble, and decide for one's self which pieces are truly "worth it" for the individual.
    Funny enough, my one and only amp (after buying / selling approximately 75), is a 1965 Fender Showman that sounds great on guitar and bass, depending on the cabinet. I'm not going to disclose which amps I wish I hadn't sold, for fear of further driving up their prices, haha.

    I have two amps. One is Marshall style and the other Fender style. I do not have ants in my pants. I spend time practicing, recording, and gigging. I spend money on my family. Sure the odd pedal is fun but being excessive with anything is unhealthy.

      Similar here, but I do like to have a Vox too, even if it's not an expensive one. But, I do need to sell 40% of my guitars, now I've found three I really love - the others seem a bit meh and unnecessary. Similar with pedals, kind of settled on two drives, a reverb, a delay, a chorus, a fuzz, a compressor after trying a good number. Pedals thankfully are easier to sell than guitars.

    I've spent more on guitars than amps over the years. Maybe because I was playing only acoustic for a long time. And before that, when I was young, I think I didn't appreciate the value of good tube amps enough, over guitars. So, when I came back to playing electric, I listened around a lot, for the sounds I liked most, and really it boiled down to three core tones, and so three amp types: Marshall JTM, Fender Deluxe Reverb and Vox AC30. So, got those, and stuck with them. Similar witth guitars, find myself mostly playing three of my guitars: Baum Wingman, Gibson Les Paul Special, Fender Vintera II Telecaster. Though planning to sell a few of my less loved guitars, and buy a better Strat-type, maybe a Baum Celestor, or maybe Vintera again for the Strat.

    Was that VHT amp on your list? I have a number of tonal amps, starting with a 1981 Dave Fredman modded, a JCM 800, a Super Reverb, two Supersonic 22s, a 57 Deluxe, a 57 Champ, and a VHT head that sits on a Peavey tweed cab with a celestion vintage 30. I know all about that tone hole you go down. I am older now. I have had my share of amps and had to sell some when I was younger to make ends meet. If I had to pick the one amp you sound best on, I would say it's the VHT. Sometimes cost isn't the factor, good is just good. I enjoy your tutorials. You break it all down and keep real.

    My '66 Deluxe Reverb is my best amp and the one I play the most, but my $250 made-in-China Vox AC4TV is the one I play next most. The Vox sounds great as-is with the 10 inch speaker, and I made an extension cab for it with a 12 inch speaker that makes it useful for smaller gigs. I have various other amps that are cool but I don't actually use/play them much (although if I got the right sort of gig I would). I am constantly amazed at how good the cheap Vox sounds when it is turned up and overdriving. No pedal could match it.

    HI John. I must say you are a fantastic Guitarist. The AMP thing is a never ending Quest. Believe me when I tell you that no Amp is Worth much more than About 5 to 600 quid. The most expensive parts are the Transformers costing around 2 to 300 and the cabinet about 30 to 50 the valves about 100. And the rest for the small amount of components it takes to make it up with board jacks and switches. You are better off building your Own. say Vyse Amps school. EG. When you buy a finished amp from any manufacturer be it Soldano , Two Rock , or any manufacturer. Your only getting what there interpretation of a good sounding amp is A lot of Boutique amp designers can't play that well anyways, so how can they say what sounds good for you. Any way build your own ,give it a shot and tailor the sound to what you think is good.take control of your Own tone. It's got a lot to do with your perceived EQ and how the harmonics react to over drive. Good Luck. Best Regards. John.

    I just did a quick add up and found I’ve spent about 32K (but in NZD) on amps AND guitars over the last 36 years. On average exchange rates over that time that’s probably about 16 thousand pounds. That’s 17 electric guitars, 1 acoustic, and 8 amps. I’ve sold a few of these. A mix of secondhand and new. It’s been much cheaper than owning and mooring a boat. I generally bought far less while I was regularly gigging. If you throw in the cost of pedals, accessories, repairs, upgrades, and picking up and transporting the drummer I reckon it would be closer to 50K. And a hernia and a bad back 😊. Still, over four decades it has kept me happy. Next week I’m thinking of learning a third chord 😊.

I have two excellent Carvin vintage series amps, one is a Belair with the tweed 2x12 ext. cab and the other is a Carvin VT50 with the tweed 4x10. I don't gig with either one any more but I just might. The VT50's original owner told me after I bought it that it was purchased with the help of Joe Walsh so that just means it stays no matter what. Tonight and tomorrow night's gigs involve me leaving my Helix floor at home and using my Boss GX100 into my Fender Fr12. Light weight and my back says 'thank you". I wonder what you think of the Supro Delta King 12 Combo Amp is, John? I confess that I find it a very impressive amp. I cannot compete with the sheer number of electric guitar amps which John Cordy has owned, but I have at various times owned the following:
    * Mesa Boogie Nomad
    * Roland Jazz Chorus JC 120
    * Roland Blues Cube
    * Roland Cube
    * Cornford (don't remember the details)
    * HH (big and very heavy)
    * Carvin
    * Hughes & Kettner (large)
    * Boss Katana II
    * Peavey
    I have also tried, but sadly never owned, a Traynor. But for me, the nicest amp of all is the Supro Delta King 12.

      Nomad! Which one did you have? Supros aren't supro common in the UK - they seemed to have a bit of a resurgence with the Neo Soul thing on instagram but I don't hear much about them anymore?

      @@johnnathancordy I think the Supro Delta King 12 is pretty 'hot off the press' - they haven't been around for very long, ie less than 6 months.
      The Noman I had - if memory serves - was maybe 50 Watts, and was the last separate Head and Speaker in the UK, the others were all combos. I owed some money to a friend, so I gave them to him in lieu of dosh.

    It's the same as car guys, it's interesting, educational, and sometimes( if you're actually gigging them), it's useful to buy amps, but at the root of it, like trying to buy that special guitar, it's, let's face it, indulgeance.... so unless buying amps, cars or guitars, is starting to control you instead of you controlling it, why not enjoy your life. If you're a car guy you might lust sfter an Aston Martin, and eventually settle for a Jaguar, but keep a Toyota for a "daily driver" Unless you're Chris Fantana, in which case you're into both amos and cars. I've never had enough money to buy amps or guitars frivolously, so they've always been used for playing at home for fun, jam sessions,recording, and live gigs, so after I've bought a new one I'll invariably be selling an old one. Oh the regret! ( seller's remorse can be more soul destroying than buyer's remorse.Eyes fixed on some shiny new but of gear, I'v foolishly sold or traded two JCM 800 2210's, a good silverface Fender twin, a Vox STR ( AC30 top only), a small and handy Gallien Crueger 250ML, an originalTS808, which luckily I was able to buy back, a Groovetubes STPG ( admittedly broken), and a beautiful sounding Marshall JMP 1x12 combo ( master volume and metal toggle switches) I've sold a japanese nylon Aria, I think, that was a cheap guitar that sounded amazing, and there's other stuff I forgotten. This must sound very average to northern hemispherians ( even Australians), but each time I actually used the amps all the time, and they were the best I could afford in the seventies,eighties,nineties, and noughties, before everything became astronomically priced ( especially in NZ). So selling is sometimes worse than buying.... but it's more incestuous than that, because most of that list was what I bought after selling or trading the one immediately before it! ( wish I still had my sixties Marshall quad with the 16 OHM greenbacks) I'm being incredibly rude,(sorry) because I'm suggesting( I now realise) that you shouldn't feel so bad, having Amp Acquisition Syndrome, and the wherewithal and location to enjoy it, so cheer up? Nice sound in the intro!😄

    It sounds like a lot, but given the high turnover the only number that really matters is the delta between buy price and sale price and how much you are currently holding in stock value. ie so next vid just work out what you subsequently sold each of them for, and then look at the difference between what you outlaid (35K) and what you recouped after sale, and the current value of what you still have. i am sure it won’t be that bad after all that, and certainly a justifiable ‘business expense’

    It takes time for your ears to develop with gear, so I wouldn't feel bad about spending on that part of it, it's just part of the process of discovery. What IS stupid is getting in over your head with those purchases. I've come to realize that buying gear should be a balancing act between your current needs and your future aspirations; basing your decisions too far to either one side will come back to haunt you every time

    Well you’re a musician and you’re on a journey chasing a sound that means something to you. Today there’s too much choice which is a distraction from the music. Musicians back in the 60’s had to make do with limited choices of mostly crappy equipment and that gave the time to hone their skills.
    Seeing as you’re a gigging musician and a parent that also needs living space and likes tube amps but the costs of servicing them is not great the solution is a no brainer. Bluguitar Amp 1 mercury it can be dialled in to tone match the amps you like, (see the gear street video where they do this). It’s got a tube in the power section, it’s small and has recording outputs.
    My amp collection Orange or15, super crush 100, crush pro cr120, cr60, micro dark.
    Fender pro junior, champion 100.
    EHX dirt road, Ehx 5mm
    Seymour Duncan power stage 170.
    Vox ac15, mini super beetle.
    Marshall Origin 20, JCM 800 half stack, valvestate 20, dsl1
    Blackstar silverline 100 head
    Roland blues cube artist, Roland micro cube
    Boss katana 🤦‍♂️

    There is nothing practical about being a musician; there is nothing practical about buying amps (or guitars, or modelers, or pedals, or whatever). John, take care of your family and live your life. If buying amps and impractical gear makes you happy, please do this thing. You don't get any "bonus points" at the end for denying yourself, no one is keeping track. But please stop re-purchasing the Mesa Lonestar - good grief, just keep the damn thing.
