I remember being in prison watching this live... And everyone around me was talking trash about it... And thrre i am front and center... With tears rolling down my face. I was an addict for 20 years and got sober and stayed sober when I went to prison and this song... This song just hits me hard. Beautiful.
My son got out of prison after being in and out 20 years.. a 20 year Heroin addict. I heard this song live I sent it to him .. he died 2 dats later.. I consider it “ his” now.
This song and performance moved me as well. And that was before I knew about this battles with addiction. As a recovery man myself this very touching. :)
I cry every time I hear this song. My dad passed away recently and we listened to Nathaniel Rateliff often towards the end of his life. My dad loved SOB and I Need Never Get Old, but regretfully we never listened to this one. He spent a lifetime struggling with alcoholism, but he was a great father and I miss him a ton. I believe in the end my dad found redemption before he was set free.
Saw him at the Greek after his first album hit. He talked about how he would constantly be getting drunk and he had a note he would keep in his jacket pocket saying call my manager not the cops for when he would be passed out in the streets and it had his managers number on it. He has come a long way and I still can't stop listening to him. His music is truly amazing.
I'm an old (Woodstock era) music lover. Kinda' stuck back in those days. There have been plenty of good acts from then until now but, this guy, (and The Alabama Shakes) really stand out to me as recent acts as good as any from any decade.
I watched it when it first aired back in February of 2021. Less than a year after the world put itself on the back burner. I didn’t really enjoy SOB when that was going on a few years prior. But, I ended up spending the next six months immersed in Nathaniel Rateliff’s music. From February of 2020-February 2021, I had lost my grandpa just a few weeks before COVID covered the US, and lost my dad a few short weeks afterwards in April. Even though it was nearly a year after all of that, music has a weird way of being in the right spot when you need it. I think this aired a few days after the 9th anniversary of my mom’s passing.
SNL has some great performances, but this is my favorite of my 45+ years watching. It moved me to tears just listening to him pour his heart out about regrets in life.

I don’t really think there needs to be a comparison or a competition. Both are excellent for different reasons.
Going through a divorce, this song brought me to the edge, and held me there and pulled me back.
In the hours that I've known
And of all of my woes
Are the cause to lay you low
I demand they turn to whole
Would you set me free?
Just set me free
As it takes its hold
And it won't let you go
I'm reminded of the cold
And how it's taken so much from me
Are you worthy of being saved?
All your fears and insecurities
Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free
And there's nowhere to hide
And you're only just trying
Are there only just lies you hear?
While redemption seems far away
While I stumble through every day
Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free
Keep running 'til we learn to find peace
Just set me free
Keep running 'til we learn to find peace
Just set me free
Keep running 'til we learn to find peace
Just set me free
Keep running 'til we learn to find peace
Just set me free
