Any advice for someone starting college in computer science? I’m a freshman at Texas A&M. I surprisingly understand the material very well so far for a beginner, but the grading system that they use for the intro programming course is a bit intimidating. A midterm, a final, worth 80% of the grade, 10% assignments, and 10% labs. The exams are 20% lecture material, 80% programming tests, solving code. The TA told me that you only get 1 submission for the exam, and if it doesn’t run, for whatever minor mistake, you miss the whole problem. There will be 4 problems on each exam. So 80% of 25 is 20. Each problem worth 20 points. TA told me that they literally had a significant amount of people make 0s on the exams last semester. As much as I am enjoying the major so far, the exams just seem incredibly intimidating and I almost feel like I have to spend hours upon hours a day perfecting my skills. I honestly feel like I could go into the midterm well-prepared and walk out with a 40. My buddy took that class as well as physics last semester and he made an A in physics, yet he made a C in this class. I’m not saying that the computer science class curriculum is harder than Physics, but it’s definitely hard to make an A or even a B.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is try and build your own side projects. Coding is a skill that I think the best way to learn is to simply write code and run into problems. Once you solve enough problems, coding then begins to make perfect sense. Also maybe find a course on the specific programming language you are learning. If you find a course that builds real life projects that’s even better.
