Although I've never gotten a red light camera ticket I'm sympathetic to anyone who has. I think they're a total sham. If they were actually based on up to the minute traffic safety studies, were individually reviewed by a law enforcement officer from every angle, and not $500 bucks a pop (in incorporated cities like Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Culver City, Hawthorn, etc) I wouldn't be as dead set against red like cameras. But they're about money and nothing but.
I was at a fundraiser at the home of a very wealthy corporate attorney in Beverly Hills a couple years ago, a man who's enthusiastically raised a lot of money for Hillary and Biden, and a young woman asked him if the $500 dollar ticket she got on Olympic was legit. He said it was. She said she thought it was a sham, and he said to her, "You can either go to the beach and pound sand about it or marry a rich man. If you can't pay it you're not Beverly Hills material" . So yeah, I identify red light cameras with total pricks.

Very stressed out. Was stuck behind a car in the intersection and saw a flash. Not sure if it was for me or driver in front. Can I call the traffic enforcement department of Culver city, which I believe it happened in, and see if they can tell me if I was the vehicle?

Sorry to hear about your accident that's stressful, but don't be stressed about the flash going off. Nothing you need to worry about a ticket yet nor do you need to contact the traffic enforcement department. Nothing to do unless they actually send you a ticket. That flash goes off all the time, then an officer has to review it and decide if they issue a ticket. They need to do this within 10 days. So just wait it out.
Hi Steve, I just crossed an intersection when the light was yellow. Halfway though, light turns red and the red light camera flashes. Can I still get a ticket this way in California? Also, I have a dash cam to prove light was yellow when I entered the intersection.
Yes red light camera tickets are 100% legal in CA and this sounds like a valid ticket that you should fight. The best way to fight the ticket is with a trial by written declaration. When fighting it this way in writing, the dash cam will not be used. If you would like to fight it in court you can use the dash cam, however we feel it would be better to do the declaration first. If you lose you can always request a new trial and have an in court trial and use the dash cam if you like. Remember sometimes it's not about if you did or didn't do it, it's about a putting together a proper defense to maximize your chances of dismissing the ticket.

But there was no sign that I could not turn right on a red light. There was also no traffic coming towards me so I believe there was no reason for me to get that ticket. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi. I observed a camera ticket getting cars for not stopping at a stop sign at an overlook in Topanga. Actually, the camera was taking pics (at night I could see it flash) of cars before they came to a complete stop! Can you tell me are these stop sign cameras still called Red Light Cameras? Yes Red Light Camera and stop sign tickets are real tickets. No not necessarily a scam but yet to generate revenue as CA relies on traffic ticket revenue and is typically the 2nd leading revenue source for CA with about 4-5 million tickets issued every year. One thing to note is that just because a flash goes off doesn't mean that a ticket will be issued. An officer in charge of the red light camera system must review the video and determine if a ticket will be issued or not.

Hi Kerrie, no you do NOT go to traffic school if you are fighting your ticket as you are trying to get it dismissed. CA law states that you must post the bail/fine with the court when you turn in your documents. They put it in their client trust account. When it's dismissed it's refunded in full. Hi Steve, I was caught by the red light today when 3 cars were speeding to most likely catch the yellow light. The 3rd car decides to put his right blinker on to turn right then he stops at the light or limit line and I was in the middle of the street so I had to turn left regardless and that’s when the red light camera took my picture. You may never get a ticket. Just because the camera goes off doesn't mean a ticket will be issued. If you were already in the intersection I suspect you will not get one as a person has to review every pictures/video prior to the ticket being issued and may not issue a ticket. Typically you are sent the ticket first followed by the courtesy notice with the due date and the amount of the bail/fine. However that is not a defense that you didn't get the actual ticket. Does red light camera always take a picture of the driver? And does the flash always noticeable in daylight? Also, are the cameras directional camera meaning, it won't take a picture if the camera is on the other side of the intersection?
Typically the camera does get the driver in the picture, they use that to prove you were driving. Yes the flash always goes off, however just because the flash goes off that doesn't mean you are getting a ticket. The cameras are taking pictures all the time only some of them result in tickets. Yes the camera facing you takes the picture but the one behind you can take it as you're going through.

I have a camera ticket, I was merging from a small street into a heavy traffic ave, the intersection is right before by the metro line as well, so I merged in a hasty way (of course catching a space because none was letting me in) and at that moment the metro bus was arriving and the light also changed. I got a red light ticket yesterday 8/20/23. I didn’t run a red light. I got a ticket because I turn right (in the picture I see my brake lights on before making the right turn). When I arrive to the lights I saw light from opposite street to turn left on green and traffic where moving. Hello, Today I received a “courtesy notice: this is not a ticket” paper in the mail. I’m the registered car owner but the person driving was not me. The paper had no court date and said not to call the court. It had a section asking to identify the driver. It had been 12 days since the incident and no actual ticket has been issued. I even searched for the case in the court website but nothing came up. What does this paper mean and what should I do?
This sounds like it's a "nomination ticket" or "snitch ticket" these are not actual tickets but want to indicate who is driving so that they can issue a real ticket. If you do nothing with these there will never be a ticket. If this is a snitch ticket you can ignore it. A really ticket will come from a court not a police department.

How does it work if I the driver get a ticket in a company vehicle?
If the ticket is in your name even if in a company vehicle you fight it in your name. If it is int he company name they will have to change it to your name to fight the ticket.

I just got notice from a collection agency asking for $499, red light cam from 8 years ago! Its a request from Los Angeles Superior Court. In Los Angeles there is no enforcement for FTA or for not paying fees. It has ever been on my driving record and never will be. The FTA does not go to the DMV. There are effectively no consequences for not paying. I never had any communications with the court. I spoke to the collection agent and filed a dispute. She says their company will not make any claims to the credit bureaus. She did me the favor of listing potential consequences none of which I believe the California court will enforce. What is the best approach so I am not hounded by a collection agency?

There was a picture taken yesterday but i don't know if it was taken of me or the person behind me. I crossed the line on yellow solid arrow (I have it on my dash cam) then when it turned red the flash went on. I was stuck in front of the camera when it took the picture but again idk if it was of me I live in LA.

I have a question for you brother. I’m the owner of the vehicle that the red light camera took a picture of. The person that the camera took a picture of was wearing a mask. Due to COVID restrictions. 😷 Will I be able to still prove that the driver isn’t me? How will the court know when the person is face was covered and they were wearing a hat. Only thing visible was there eyes.

So i was driving, it was green when i was about to turn right and then it suddenly turned yellow. I think it was too sudden for me to brake or else i will have to break and inertia will move me to the front of the windshield. The brake wont be smooth cuz u should usually have enough time to brake or else when u brake too sudden it will literally make u shift to the front of the windshield. My city doesn’t have any camera Inforced signs in the entrances and it also didn’t have any sign at the intersection. I didn’t see a flash but still waiting . It did have a police department surveillance camera though would that send out a ticket ?
If your city doesn't operate a red light camera ticket system you can't get a red light camera ticket. Surveilance cameras do not issue tickets.

Hi Steve, I get a bit of information overload researching fighting red light camera tickets. I got a ticket in the mail. i was not driving the car and on top of that, the image quality of the picture is poor. My question is, I read on another site that you cannot file Trial By Declaration if you cannot/or do not identify the driver, and you must fight it in person in court. Obviously with the pandemic, doing anything in person is something we want to avoid at all costs, especially going to a crowded traffic court. We are in Kern County. I also read that if you pay the bail amount as part of your Trial By Declaration, it amounts to an admission of guilt, which seems strange. Just want to make sure fighting a ticket when you were clearly not the driver, including paying the required bail for Trial By Declaration, is acceptable. Possibly looking at using your service

We have been successfully doing this for 16 years. No you do NOT need to identify the driver, one exception there is the Sacramento court. No posting bail does not admit guilty, it is CA law to post bail. It is fully refunded once a ticket is dismissed. I got a red light camera ticket but I think I may have a defense but I am not sure because i did do it but I would say there was some extenuating circumstances. I have this on video I could have easily made the turn but someone made an illegal left turn out of a gas station parking lot on the other side of the road across 2-3 lanes I was going about 40mph but because i thought he would continue on i hit my brakes but he stopped just before entering my lane so i started entering the turning lane and accelerating briskly from about 10mph to 30mph when another vehicle this time to my right decided he no longer wanted to go straight go left cutting me off and i again had to brake to keep from hitting him and continue on again behind him and get hit by the red light camera missing the light by a fraction of a second. I do admit by this point i was so focused on the other cars by the time i noticed the light was yellow but i had no idea how long it was yellow and i was already just a few feet from the limit line.

Well first off you don't know you will get a ticket yet even if you ran the light. An officer at each court reviews the pictures/video and ten decides if they should issue the ticket or not. They have 10 days to issue the ticket, after that, they can't. Now since the car was not registered to, the ticket will come to the person who the car is registered to. If they get the ticket, they might contact you or just fill out the information on the back of the ticket to change it to your name. Then if they do, you will get the ticket. If that happens, please contact us.

@@CAsaidit Yes it applies but don't get confused with "proof of service" that is different. Typically they just have to prove that they mailed the notice in 15 days not that you received it in 15 days.

What about camera tickets in a company vehicle?
Yes you can fight those however i'm assuming that they were sent to the company as there are the registered owner. They will change it to your name and then you can fight the ticket.

@@GetdismissedCAso I have a situation that is not a camera based ticket. I intend to fight it and see about discovery of the body cam as well as the traffic camera (pretty sure they have a small camera on a single light at that intersection), and I also plan to postpone the court date as long as humanly possible. So this intersection there are 4 lanes on the side I was coming from. There I'd a U-Turn only lane which the cop was in, a turn lane and two straight lanes. The turn lane had a marked line close to where the cop is. The two lanes going straight have the line about 20 feet further back. The light was absolutely yellow when my front tire went over the line. It turned red right about when I hit where the cop was at in the U-Turn area. He pulled out and turned his lights on immediately. Somehow I knew he would do this because the way that intersection is. I honesty believe he may not have realized that the line was about 20 feet back from the straight away (maybe 15 feet but still). I told him I thought my light was yellow, but I didn't say I wasn't sure. I checked the line after the stop was over and just was glad I wasn't arrested for concealing my firearm, which the only reason I did that is because it was on my waist when he was talking to me and he didn't notice so I threw it in the box and tossed it far away from me as he walked back to his car because I didn't want to get shot if he saw it. Figured it was better to go to jail for illegal concealed carry than to go home in a body bag.
Hey Steve, I was driving past an intersection I’m not used to driving through, there was a tree blocking the overhead light and I didn’t even realize there was a light there until I drove into the intersection. When I saw the red light I slammed on my breaks but I was already in the middle of the intersection so I continued through. No other cars were around at the time. Also the car is registered in my dads name. What is the best chance of getting the ticket dismissed? Having my dad say it isn’t him driving or fighting the ticket saying the tree had blocked my view of the traffic light? Thank you.
If the cars registered in your dads name you should fight it in his name, better chance for dismissal.
