I used to use a similar system using a binder rather than a bin. I have been averaging 8-10 absent students PER CLASS this year and there is no way I would be able to keep up! We are on a block schedule and students don’t often come to my room on their “off” day. I organize everything in a calendar on their homepage of Canvas and link a digital copy of all work there. I am finding that regardless of what method I use right now, the kids that will do the work will find it or see me, and the kids that won’t do the work don’t care enough to look for it either way. I may start using a similar method again next year…but my issue is where to store the bin or binder. I have NO counters in my classroom and there is not enough room for a table to store things like this 😢
I taught block (very) briefly and did have the same issue with people not checking in on their off day but I felt it was still really helpful whenever I saw them next! A couple of ideas that might be worth trying. When there are a ton of students out I sometimes type up the form and then just print it out so it isn’t as redundant to write but obviously that has its own challenges. As for no counter/table space. I have seen teachers use over the door organizers to create some more space in their room or even command hook things with slots to the wall. Not sure if either of those would be a better fit than the physical bin. But I will share that for awhile my bin was just on the ground in front of my desk!
