You can also add tofu to make the dish more filling and nutritious. 😄
Cooking with Dog great recipe!!! But I'd like to know what Francis says on that bubble at the beginning o.o I hope he's doing fine, we all love him dearly!
I am so pleased to see and our Sweet Francis. He is well named. St Francis is the patron of animals. You two cheer me up. I am so happy to enjoy your wonderful food. When I see the notification, I can’t wait to treat myself to a fun, creative, and healthy video.
Francis is just getting a little bit older so he sleeps during parts of the video! I highly doubt he's sick because I know chef takes good care of him. We love you Francis!
Ha I know. Where I live (Sweden if you were wondering) it's one of the hottest summers yet for me. It's hard to do anything but lie still and be tired without feeling like you're going to melt.
Francis may be requiring some well deserved time off :) I'm sure everyone would be just as happy to have his narration while he spends his afternoons snoozing and getting cuddles
Bitter melon is good! It's not more bitter than olives, I think. They grow wild sometimes where I live. This is the first time I've seen Francis snoozing in a video. Still cute!
Never knew before bitter melon is also used in Japanese cuisine :) Its a very popular vegetable in south asian countries named as "Karela". Its very helpful to reduce diabetics, heart disease and for blood purification!
Wow, the somen went soft the minute it hit the water. I wonder if goya is the inspiration for snozzcumbers. It looks like it.. long green bumpy thing that's bitter. If it wasn't so bumpy you could just peel it, i mean it's weird if the OUTSIDE of something is the part you want to eat, to scoop out the inside instead of just cutting off the outside.. ha.
A nice grocer gave me a goya today so I could try it. I made this dish (without tuna or chicken powder because I have none), and it turned out pretty good... Bitter melon is very hard to eat, but I know it's good for u, plus it was free, so I ate it anyway lol :D
I thought the bitter melon looked like broccoli in the previews. I'll give it a try! Would angel hair pasta be a good substitute for those who can't find somen?
Has anyone else ever wondered how that first person to eat some of these foods must have reacted? Like they dug up a bitter melon or onion, took a bite and was like, "BLECH!! But, this'll do," and showed their civilization who then had the same reaction.
I grew up eating this dish, but instead I had it with soba noodle, lots of spring onions and tuna. IT'S SUPER DELICIOUS^^. You're missing out if you haven't try this fried noodle yet :P
Making this for lunch tomorrow, great recipe! By the way, how old is Francis already? I hope he is alright, it makes me sad seeing him sleep throughout the video :(
rac rac bitter like... medicine? Someone in the comment section said 'espresso on a vegetable' so, yeah.. It much much more bitter than brussels sprouts xD
If you don't really mind taste it won't be so bitter but it's really bitter just saying.Even when my mom puts it in a simple soup it's still really bitter but it doesn't affect the soup's taste
Perfect for hot summer days? And this weekend is supposed to be really hot... this must be fate! Thank you very much! I doubt I'll get bitter melon here, so I hope lettuce will work. EDIT: Well, I got the Goya and made the dish with it but unfortunately I couldn't eat it. I tried but after the third piece my body started rejecting it and I felt like I had to get it out of my mouth immediately. I really hate bitter food. But the rest of the dish tastes great and I'll make it much more often, just without the Goya.
Damn, I wish I understood that text bubble that popped up next to Francis at the start... It's good to see he has a much thicker bed to rest upon while Chef works, though. It must be rough on his legs and back to balance on the stool these days. Moving the subject to the dish, are Somen Noodles another kind made from rice? I haven't heart of them before, plus they look much too thin and don't have the same yellow color yakisoba noodles has and are too thick to be general rice noodles, which as I've seen, are like thin strips of paper.
My mom brought the bitter melon today and I was excited to try but omg I rubbed it with salt and everything then stir fried it but DX It was so bitter I couldn't even swallow it in the end we couldn't eat it :C
Honestly she would be the best grandma ever ;-; shes so nice and she smiles a lot AND she cooks AMAZINGGGG

Hope you feel better and get less sick. Take care!
+Maria Caligari Thank you☺️☺️☺️
First time I had this dish was in Okinawa about 5 years ago. This is one of my favorite summer dishes as it's easy to make and delicious! いただきます!
I can honestly say I've never seen a Goya before until I saw this video.....
It's also common in Filipino dishes
+DarkR0ze In Indonesia we call it "pare" :)
Let's be honest, the best thing about it is how Francis was able to narrate while taking a nap!! ;)
I am so pleased to see and our Sweet Francis. He is well named. St Francis is the patron of animals. You two cheer me up. I am so happy to enjoy your wonderful food. When I see the notification, I can’t wait to treat myself to a fun, creative, and healthy video.
Thanks for the recipe! I will definitely try this one out. This is a perfect dish for hot days like these.
Ahhhh.... I've always wanted to know how to say ampalaya in English and now I know. Bitter melon:). Definitely lives up to its name.
Francis is just getting a little bit older so he sleeps during parts of the video! I highly doubt he's sick because I know chef takes good care of him. We love you Francis!
Wonderful Somen Chanpuru dish!!!! YUM
Her grandchildren must be really happy with all the food she can make *_*

Jungleman
It's summer! ^^ He was just taking a siesta.
Ha I know. Where I live (Sweden if you were wondering) it's one of the hottest summers yet for me. It's hard to do anything but lie still and be tired without feeling like you're going to melt.
***** sleep tight Francis
I was wondering if I was the only one who saw that
Awwwe Francis is tired,sooo kawaii
Francis may be requiring some well deserved time off :) I'm sure everyone would be just as happy to have his narration while he spends his afternoons snoozing and getting cuddles
I am eating this right now. Super easy and quick to make! I used bell pepper instead of bittermelon. So delicious. :)
美味しいに決まってます!!
今日の昼食は早速コレにします!!笑

It looks so Good
I'm going to try making this!
Congrats on 1 million subscribers ^.^

I like bitter melon...
Ugh, omg this looks sooo good.
Love you both!
Beautiful!!
Ampalaya is goya or bitter gourd in Filipino. It is also a very common vegetable in the Philippines.
Is goya supposed to be bitter gourd?
Yes
Yea
Que rico se ve.
Wow this is really easy to prepare sadly we dont have chicken stock powder and sake in our country
A nice grocer gave me a goya today so I could try it. I made this dish (without tuna or chicken powder because I have none), and it turned out pretty good... Bitter melon is very hard to eat, but I know it's good for u, plus it was free, so I ate it anyway lol :D
Happy Independence Day, Francis!
Francis looks so sleepy!

The way that Francis talks sometimes reminds me at Michel from Gilmore Girls xD
Buono!
Can you make that bacon and rice dish that Lawson does? I'm back in the UK now and I really want to eat it again!
Love u Francis!!!
Hello, I can't use alcohol and was wondering what should I substitute it with? I'd love to make many of your recipes.
Anyone know the name of the tune at the end of every video? It's so peaceful!
Where do you take your music? Especially the Japanese style song. Thank you!
Lovely looking recipe. Francis looks so board. Poor little guy. Lol. I guess it's not his cup of noodles.
What's the song at 4:55?
I thought the bitter melon looked like broccoli in the previews. I'll give it a try! Would angel hair pasta be a good substitute for those who can't find somen?
Yes! :)
I love you chef! ☺️❤️😍🙏💐🍔🎂🙆

Can anyone translate the annotation in the beginning of the video into english? I'm curious what it says o:
at the bottom right it litterally saya so u me n chi ya n pu ru which we write as somen champuru in english.
ThatOneWeirdKid4 Francis is just telling that they are recruiting people to help with video editing. I guess non-Japanese need not apply, he he.
Neropatti Thank you! c:
Hi, my mum is allergic to alcohol. Do you have any alternatives to sake and mirin you could recommend please? Loving your show!! :D
Hello Chef! Is there a substitute for sake? I would love to make this but I can't add alcohol ^_^ ありがとうございます!
If i use Bell pepper instead , is it the same process with salt and water?
I have not tried this, but I would guess that you don't need to. Peppers become sweeter when they are cooked anyway, in my experience.
No you would not need to because the whole salt water process is to remove the bitterness from the melon and bell peppers are not bitter.
Hi chef! I like the frying pan with blue handle! May I know which pan you are using? (brand name、item number) thanks!
Ooohishiiiiii!!!!
I have a feeling Francis is getting old... Toy poodles can reach their at around 8 years old... Let's hope he lives longer than that!
loooovveee bitter melons... it is called KOROLLA in Bangladesh :)
I grew up eating this dish, but instead I had it with soba noodle, lots of spring onions and tuna. IT'S SUPER DELICIOUS^^. You're missing out if you haven't try this fried noodle yet :P
Tbh that melon vegtable thing we saw first is nightmare fuel
Making this for lunch tomorrow, great recipe!
By the way, how old is Francis already? I hope he is alright, it makes me sad seeing him sleep throughout the video :(
Wah, ada pare :D
フランシス大丈夫?
眠たいだけならいいのだけれど
夏バテ?お熱?
いづれにしても、ゆっくり寝てください〜☆
Bitter like what? like brussels sprouts? I've never had
seen or tasted goya. Love Francis awwww!!!
rac rac bitter like... medicine? Someone in the comment section said 'espresso on a vegetable' so, yeah.. It much much more bitter than brussels sprouts xD
Nurul Handayani Oh! That's too much for me, I don't even like coffee that much heheheh. Thanks Nurul!
Hahahah. You're welcome :D
I never liked bitter gourd since I was a child (I only like it when mixed with egg) T-T but this looks like a very tasty recipe...
How is Francis doing?
Goya, in Indonesia we called it 'pare'.
awww please give Francis lots of kisses for me!!
awww i checked in my city there's none Bitter Melon :( what could i replace it?
Pandy chin I made this with Bell Pepper and that worked great!
willman3000 ty :D i'll try it
I'll definitely make this, looks delicious.
Is Francis ok ?
LydiannaBella he's just tired, also old. he's been doin this for 8 years- all that restraint while Chef prepares the food takes its toll on a dog
ampalaya delicious! >:D
I can now cook Samurai Champloo.
I've seen goya in my soup before.
I never taste it XD
I throw it to the trashcan instead
How bitter bittermelon is?
Growilkku Not too bad once you salt it.
Growilkku Espresso on a vegetable
If you don't really mind taste it won't be so bitter but it's really bitter just saying.Even when my mom puts it in a simple soup it's still really bitter but it doesn't affect the soup's taste
Growilkku r-rubbing alcohol.
Growilkku if u dont wash it like i did(nt) it pretty damnnnnnnn bitter xD
What does bonito flakes taste like? It's so weird it looks like fish food.
Lady of the Cats Very concentrated fishy flavor, salty, and smoky.
Lady of the Cats It's pretty much dried tuna flesh... So probably like tuna. :P
Lady of the Cats Have you ever eaten dried squid? It tastes like that but more soft and flakey cos bonito flakes are thin shavings
Last time I checked, bitter melon does not make me feel genki. Eating them makes me want to cry.
Perfect for hot summer days? And this weekend is supposed to be really hot... this must be fate! Thank you very much! I doubt I'll get bitter melon here, so I hope lettuce will work.

Somen are wheat noodles, yakisoba is also a wheat noodle but has additional ingredients which is why the color is different.
Aaaaah, I see. Thank you for explaining that.
cmiiw. chanpuru from bahasa indonesia, campur, meaning "mix". 😊
I tried it out. It was really great. very delicious. thank you for recipe. Do you have more recipes with Goya?
Hi Chef! What is wrong with Francis? :'(
Is he sick?
My mom brought the bitter melon today and I was excited to try but omg I rubbed it with salt and everything then stir fried it but DX It was so bitter I couldn't even swallow it in the end we couldn't eat it :C
Is everything ok with Francis? He doesn't look too well lately...
Is Francis alright he always like that on most of the latest vid
Anime Fans326
In a previous video, they stated that Francis is aging and needs more rest. :) He's fine, just elderly by now.
He's old. Chef already said in a previous video that they'll let him lie down if he wants to so he can conserve his energy.
lunayen awwww poor francis miss the energetic francis who always want chef food after chef finishing to cook -.-
Anime Fans326 i feel ya buddy. Francis has been doing this for 8 years now. he's no spring chicken anymore
