I've been waiting for this to happen, especially at night. Back when this was made a docking area, all they had was the little pier out there, without a marker light on the little dock. After awhile they did put a small flashing light on the end. Needs (IMA) a bigger flashing strop light on the end of that pier. Just saying...!!!
It was a pretty good bash on the starboard corner of the stern. Lots of pictures of it on facebook. She's still in port being repaired, was supposed to leave around 10pm, but it's 11 and they're still at work on her.
@@327Erich big hole and a bigger dent, but all above the waterline hopefully. They'll have to seal that to avoid leaks if they hit waves. It'll be interesting to see if they have fun with the final repair, like giving it a stitch scar.
@blairhoughton7918 They were cutting, welding, and painting well into the night. Not sure what internal repairs may be necessary, but the outside of the stern looked good as new when she departed Miami around 1a.m.
She pulled out at 12:27 am. They do have an odd position there at the port perpendicular to the others. Every time I go out of Miami (usually on Royal or NCL) and we do the turning basin I wonder how she maneuvers back in there with that "how about we stick it here" mooring dolphin.
I think it's aligned with some doors on the ships. It was added when they were dredging and building up that dock to add the VV terminal a couple of years ago. They def built it sturdy. It stopped the ship dead without flinching itself.
@@blairhoughton7918 Absolutely. Yes, I've seen the same at most of the ports I've been to since the docks were generally not built for ships that big. As they got longer they needed more dock cleats and the solution was either to extend the dock or add the dolphins. Most people were probably in bed at the time but wow, what a jolt.
There's plenty of room in the basin and Virgin built that extension so they have no excuse for not noticing it. Whoever was driving completely failed to reach the usual position before turning. The only question is why. Did the pilot give a wrong suggestion? Did the Captain? Did the helmsman perform it wrong? The dock extension does need more lights. It was probably invisible on the cameras on the boat. That one tiny blinking light could look like water rippling if you don't stare at the monitor. It's no excuse for the driving error, but it could have given them a chance to catch it before busting the hull open.
That's not the best spot to dock definitely but I supposed Virgin rather be close to the bridge and skyscrapers, on the same side than other cruise liners, then docking further away.
At the time they added this slot it was the reasonable place. The construction on the far end is probably taking 100X more cost. They're probably regretting not lighting that extension better, tho...
@@JAMESFERNANDEZ I watched again. It's literally got just one tiny blinking white light on it. I bet by this time next week it looks like an EDM festival.
How so? Since you're the expert, I guess you never bumped anything with your car either. Your comment is embarrassing. Until you can pilot a cruise ship into the dock in the dark stop embarrassing yourself
@@roxmattern60 I am no expert, but I know that they have a lot of sophisticated equipment and people looking out, so as I have embarrassed myself I won't bother commenting on anything ever again on UA-cam and thank you for pointing out what a fool I am to do so.
@@roxmattern60 so, uh, cap'n, what's an acceptable excuse? I may need one some day if I start sailing into curiously configured ports, if I start sailing.
What surprises me is, why aren't cabin lights coming on all over the upper decks? Is everyone so blotto they didn't wake up and wonder who's bombing their boat?
The collision and maneuvers show good during the Speed Replay
OMG, I was on this ship when this happened. It was a little bouncy pulling in but certainly didn't fell like a hit!
I was on the ship as well. But I was passed out drunk when it happened... LOL! Hope you had a good time. It was just too damn hot for me tho...
Ships starting to need rear view backup lights?????

It always amazes me that the ship backs into the dock in the dark. I hope there wasn't too much damage BLC. 🤞🤞

@@327Erich That's seriously impressive.
We will have to compare this positioning to other past docking maneuvers. A BB pilot had to be on board after all.
Now she's the Scared lady
I watched this live on blc in the morning
It appears that the security car was trying to signal that they were going to hit. He had his flashing lights on until they hit. Anyone notice that?
Yeah because that's so much more effective than using the Radio.
Backup camera not working? 😂
Even with a pilot onboard at the end of the day the Captain has the final say, be interesting to see how this is decided.
I cannot believe it! How much damage was there? Any shots of the damage?
Another comment said there was a hole... some pictures posted somewhere on facebook.
I can’t believe this happened

It was only a matter of time until one of the may ships that come into/out of port run into that sore thumb sticking out there.
What’s that red stuff coming out ??
Oh -lights ?
Iceberg, right ahead vibes!

It put a gaping hole in the ship. Bilge will be working overtime.
Perhaps they need a reversing camera LOL
My 10K car has a reversing camera ????
I wonder how many passengers are going to sue for whiplash 😂😂😂
Looked like the ship was bleeding!😂
If I was on the next sailing I’d be pissed.
The DNA on that ship
Guess they need more practice on backing up
Oops😮
