Thanks for watching! It took a month of trial and error on this one and I wasn't even doing dry January 😅 good thing I love seltzer
as good as Hoppy Refresher?
Could you carbonate with a Sodastream or do you think that would impart too much of that soda water flavor to it by gassing it so quickly?
@@Lucifurion I had the same question. I just tried a mason jar (4 cups) of water with 1 gram of hops. I'm hoping to carbonate with a soda stream, or make a concentrate water of the recipe to add to soda water.
Glad you went through and did the hard work to let us know!
Hahah the least I could do
This recipe is a WINNER! Love it. Hoppy, floral, bright, citrus. It's fantastic. Did a 2 gallon batch with 4g of Cascade and 4g of Idaho-7. ❤
Thanks! Your simplified versions were helpful! Just out of my own curiosity and because I don't have a carbonator, I made a down and dirty, super low-tech back alley version of your recipe by dry hopping cascade with lime and funneling into store bought seltzer water at a 1 part dry hop/ 8 part seltzer ratio. I was a happy man, and it gave me a quick idea of what hop water could be. Bravo! Gracias!
This was a great video, very well made, and thanks for doing the legwork for us! Can't get Hop water yet over here in Germany so need to make some myself
My guess with lagunitas is that they'd add live slurry to be filtered out later - because the slurry is active it should be able to break the glyosidic linkages? (just a guess)
The beauty is that not much is lost of you have to dump a batch! I will be trying this soon! Cheers!
Great point, although I definitely drank all the bad recipes ha
Great video! Have to cut back my drinking and having 4 beers on tap at my bar is a problem. I enjoy the taste of the sierra nevada but not the price! Gonna fill up a corny with this recipe. Being that its 5 gallons would you adjust anything in the recipe? I was not sure if I needed more seeping time or anything.
LOVE this video. I can't wait to try this method. I have only tried the steeping method and Its always been quite hoppy, too much honestly. I did notice a big improvement in using whole cone hops over pellets as the pellets tend to degrade and more hop matter gets into suspension. I've bottled the water and over time a noticeable amount of hop sediment settles on the bottom of the bottle and the hoppy flavor intensifies.
What if you filter the water through filter paper (like coffee filter) before carbonation. You will get rid of the solids and still retain a good flavour.
So if you don't have a carbonation keg, could you use a sodastream to carbonate the hop water? My husband LOVES hop water, and I love homebrew recipes!
yes absolutely!
Found your channel after seeing your articles in BYO magazine. Did a hop water today. 2 gallon batch with Simco and Mosiac. Very nice and refreshing, just needs a little more carbonation. Cheers!
So cool that you found my channel. And that sounds delicious! Cheers
Thanks for testing this out. I will have to try making some hop water.
I've tried a couple of different ways, but this could be the game changer! Thank you Sir! Cheers!
Let me know what you think!
I love these videos you make where you explore other drinks, and all this tests you do. Definitely going to try this!
These are my favorites to make too, definitely want to get back to other drink videos!
I made your recipe and it is a winner. Staff at Fisher's Brewing (SLC) thought it better than Sierra Nevada. Next go around is same Plus, Centennial hops (
Looks good! I went way overboard with the hops on my last one. For a 5 gallon batch I did 1.5 oz in a hot steep, then added another 2 oz directly to the keg. I guess more is not always better! I ended up dumping half the keg. I think Lagunitas has some type of a no-calorie sweetener added and it comes across to me more like a no-calorie lime soda with a touch of hops. The Sierra Nevada one seems more like a straight hop + water drink.
I think you're right about Lagunitas, the can says "Natural flavors" which could be anything really
I love and want to try! Could I use a SodaStream to carbonate it after dry hopping?
This video came at a perfect time for me! I was planning on trying to make hop water at home for the first time this week. Loved the vid, super stoked about the recipe.
Sweet let me know how it is!
@@TheBruSho The hop water turned out amazing! I used 8 grams of citra and 10 grams of amarillo for a 2.5 gallon batch with 1.5 limes, juiced. One question, do you you serve it at 10 PSI after carbonating or do you keep it at 20-40PSI?
@@nateywebb2323 Amazing so glad to hear it! and yea exactly
Just made my first batch loosely based on your recommendation of 4g hops, 1/2 lime per 1gallon of H2O and it is for sure delicious. Thanks bro! Keep up the great work, I love your content!
Have you tried it with fresh hops? My first guess would be to scale accordingly from wet to dry but if you have any insight that would be great!
My Favorite commercial version is from Hop Lark with their Double Dry Hopped Citra Hop Water. I found pretty good success with adding 180F water over the hops in a keg and then dry hopping 2 days later before cold crashing and close transferring to a new keg.
Good stuff as always and I am sure that Homemade hop water will go fast and you will need to make a new batch again soon!
Cheers!
Oh I forgot about Hop Lark, I like how they have some various hop flavors! I saw your video on it and will have to try that out some time
@@TheBruSho Ya they do a different special release every month if you get their subscription but I have only tried the ones they have in the stores. I wish their tap room was still open to visit it in Boulder.
I also found that when adding minerals to the hop water it also added a metalic off-flavor and sometimes with the hop astringency if you give it a few days it can mellow out in the fridge.
please can you provide quantities for the recipe?
Informative. I’m more interested in some kind of concentrated extract that I can add to sodastream carbonated water and get something that tastes good even if somehow different than the SN / Lagunitas products. But still useful/interesting.
I plan to make this, and then just carbonate it in the soda stream :)
Awesome video man!! Will definitely be keeping this on tap at home!!!
TY! Its the perfect thing to have on tap at all times
Thank you! Want to try this.
For a low tech version- what are your thoughts on a reduced sugar Kiefer water with hop flower added in the F2?
I’ve made kombucha with grapefruit and hop flowers, and it was so delish. But maybe leafier water or a whey water ferment could make the carbonation?
I think that sounds super interesting! I think it’s all about the right choice of hops and you could maybe even pair it with a fruit like passion fruit
Thanks for the video. I'm planning a hop water having enjoyed the commercial versions too. I thought I'd mention the yeast possibly used for biotransformation. Vermont strain from escarpment, foggy London ale from imperial, etc. (Often the hazy strains) These types of strains "biotransform" terpenes and free thiols into intense tropical flavors and that is what makes them special. Hops like Citra and mosaic have a high quantity of these compounds relative other hop varieties, which might be why it is used. There are also some engineered yeasts (cosmic punch or thiol libre) that can access both free and bound thiols/terpenes that might be worth a shot. Generic and inexpensive hops like cascade can give you a heavy guava note with these yeasts
Just watch your Graf video this morning and went to the homebrew store to get everything. Now I have to go back and get some more hop for Hop water.
Hah sorry should have posted earlier! 😁 sned me some pics of the graf when its done
Nice work, detailed video. MoreBeer just put out a video on making hop water. They visited Lagunitas and brewed a batch of water while there, then did a home brew vesion using what they learned. Like you, they did a couple of options, but they said the yeasted version was far superior. Biotransformation. Cheers!
Great video! Love the way you edit all of your content together. Hop water is def next on my list of things to put on tap! Thanks for the inspiration! Cheers!
Where did you get that little baby keg ?
I agree with the recipe. Using lime brings out a nice brightness. I highly recommend you make a "tea" with elderberry with your recipe. It somehow gives a slightly malty flavor and sweetness to the hop water.
Thanks legend! Great video that told me everything I needed to know!
I am definitely going to try this
Great info, Thanks for doing the research and hard work. I will definitely try this.
Nice video! Haven’t tried this yet but I really wanna try it!
I was just about to make some this weekend and I am glad I was your video. I will be doing the dry hop method from now on with a splash of lime. Thanks for the hard work
AHH! Thank you for this! I was looking for hops extracts and reviews were talking about just how much you have to add to make it taste good. I am excited to try this. We have a soda water keg station at our house, but wanted to figure out the option of hop water! I was wondering if you could share roughly how long this would last in the keg?
So cool all the testing you did! Great video!
Very cool video Trent! I've been wanting to do the same thing, so thank you! Cheers
AH YES. I love the rise in popularity for hop water it's a good way to reduce alc intake and it tastes great. Thanks for you're content.
For sure! Having a lot more hop water these days in between drinking days
Do you heat the filtered water before dry hopping?
Oh you rock! I was just telling my wife about hop water and how I want to make it as something to drink during the work week instead of beer.
I have a 3gal keg I might try this out in. Wonder if it would be as simple as tripling your recipe?
Thanks Trent!
I would start with just tripling and see how it is, my goal with 1 gal was to make it scalable but I didn't test larger batches. LMK!
Really Enjoyed Your Video , Thanks ! 🐯🤠
Awesome video - picked up some hops over the weekend from an older Lagunitas hoppy refresher recipe - Citra, Cascade, Centennial & Chinook. Going to start to experiment! Thanks for taking the gypsum and other chemicals off the table! I’m down with lime :-) Going to try to make a concentrate because my keg is 5 gal and my soda stream is old. Going for a shot of concentrate mixed with the soda stream water.
How’d it go? I’m looking to do the same.
, yep, this is it, I did some hoptea what was great and light lemon-lime-soda... next is those mixed together to get really special drink...(will not give up super hoppy pilsner.. 😘 )
killer vid braj!
This looks good, will definitely try!
Let me know how it goes!
I always have hop water on tap. My kids love it and have asked for it at breweries before. Haha. The best version I made I tried to match the water profile of Topo Chico added lime juice to drop the ph and hot steeped citra at 170. I enjoy the hoppier bite though.
Good idea going for water profile of another sparkling water, didnt think to do that
Thank you for another great video
What temp is the water when you add the hops? Great Video!
Gotta try it, but since I don't have small keg that I can just do 1gall I might need to do 5 gal
Nothing wrong with that! Made 1 gal recipe so you can easily scale it to any size
Fantastic video! I’ve brewed it the hot steeping way a few times. It comes out ok, but nowhere close to Lagunitas. Excited to try the dry hop method. May even add some pineapple.
If there's no yeast, do you need to sanitize the hop sack or keg? Thanks, love the content, keep up the good work!
I didn’t sanitize, but did make sure things were clean. No issues!
Great Video !!! Finally an easy way to do hop water, I really enjoyed it, btw Nice T-Shirts !!
haha was wondering if you'd catch that!
I dry hopped my Kombucha with whole cone hops for one week. Best idea ever.
Yum thats an amazing idea!
Just made 4 liters of this in my mini keg, took 10 mins to do. It's sitting with the dryhop now. I didnt have a hop bag close, so I used a tea bag. I will shake carb so it should be ready this afternoon already. I'm really curious!
Since the comment I made 3 batches and its really tasty! 1 batch using Citra, 1 using summit and now I have a citra batch dry hopping again tonight. Once you have a "system" it takes 5 mins to make.
I use a little bottle of lemon juice instead of fresh, and a tea bag for the hops. Makes things really easy and quick.
I might add it's also a nice way to get to know your hops better.
Great video man! I’m going to make that today. How much dry hops do u recommend for 5 gallons?
Hi Trent! Question: Did you sanitize everything when doing the "dry hopped" version, or did you rely on the antimicrobial properties of hops to do it for you?
Hey! good question, I didn't sanitize but I did make sure things were clean. But a little sanitizer never hurts if you want to be safe.
I’ve done the recipe from beer maverick- did half citra half loral plus lactic acid. Will try again with your method. Did you calc the water composition from your source to imitate? Thx for all you do.
I didn't measure it but I was using filtered water from my home, so i'd imagine its pretty low mineral wise. You could totally geek out on that and get precise with mineral additions to fine tune it for sure though!
@@TheBruSho i like geeking out 😂 so in essence you took half a line and 4g hops per gallon? I’ll need to do testing!
Waiting for the 2.5gal keg as I have everything else. Very anxious !!!
really good testing. They just started selling hop water at the store near my work. Still haven't tried it yet.
It’s worth checking out. I didn’t mention this but they use “natural flavors” so they might be adding some fruit flavors to amplify it. Not sure 🤷♂️
I would guess Lagunitas use yeast along with sugar to get the biotransformation going, but since they claim it's 0 carbs, 0 alcohol that doesn't seem to be the case.
I've tried making hopwater using sugar to "naturally carb" and get some biotransfomration and I was fairly happy with the results, much better than earlier versions I've made. I'll try dryhopping next with a bit of sugar and yeast to see how it turns out.
Oh thats good to know, please follow up and let us know how that goes!
@@TheBruSho one test so far. 8L of water, 50g of table sugar, a little bit of citric acid (didn't have any lemons on hand), a little yeast nutrient and a little bit of Loki that I had around. 3 day dry hop using 6g of mandarina bavaria.
Best hop water I've made so far. I'll try it without yeast and sugar next for comparison but this is definitely great hop water as is.
Could you carbonate using a Sodastream jsut the same?
can you use a soda stream to carbonate ?
I'll have to give this a try. I wonder how a version that was both steeped and dry hopped would compare?
Oh that’s a good idea I’d be curious to know too! Let me know if you test it out
Great video, Sir! Thanks for the recipe. I am going to make a trip to the homebrew store and give it a try. Other commenters here seem to have good things to say about it!
I'm going to give it a try, but did you test longer dry hop duration?
do you know if those olive nation extracts have alcohol ?
What type of keg is that and the cap?
I love this, Trent, great job!
Oh I'm definitely gonna make some with some talus hops.
Thanks for the vidéo, I will try this one soon ! Since there is no alcool and no pasteurisation, I am wondering how long Can WE keep hop water before it starts to be not safe to drink ?
Probably almost forever since hops are antibacterial. But the flavor will diminish over time
Thank you for this!
I’m looking to add hop flavor to the carbonated water I make in a soda stream. So- how long do you think the dry hopped water would stay in the fridge? 3-5 days? A couple weeks? (To be Used by pouring some in a glass, adding lime nice, then topping with carbonated water).
It can last a long time actually, especially cold. Hops are somewhat anti microbial.I would say a couple weeks, but will taste better the fresher it is
How many g of fresh hops would you use to do this?
I wish this video was posted sooner, I made a batch of hop water over the weekend and it came out super bitter. Definitely trying the dry hop next time.
Great experiment, Trent! Cheers dude!!
Thanks brother!
With your final recipe, when you infuse the hops with water for 6 hours, is there an optimal temperature your water should be? I assume room temperature is probably the best for good extraction of flavours. If I don't have a carbonation keg, would a sodastream bottle and machine work to carbonate? Obvious you need to refrigerate the water first before carbonation, otherwise the gas won't dissolve well.
Room temp is what I did and worked great, and soda stream is a perfectly fine way to make it carbonated!
Thanks man!
Thanks for providing us with a shortcut through all that work. You're correct, these are totally customizable. I've occasionally added hibiscus for some pink color.
Where’d you find that square 1g keg? That’d be perfect for my mini fridge!
It’s from Craftmaster Growlers. I did a video on it a few months ago: ua-cam.com/video/EJownIqopCY/v-deo.html
Total noob here, but why does it take 3-4 days to carbonate in the mini keg? Also, I live in Nashville, and a local seltzer (Maypop) company makes amazing hop water. By far my favorite has been Pelican Brewing on Cannon Beach in Oregon. So if you're looking for others to try, definitely check those out!
I always put a keg of seltzer on during the summer. The dry hop method seems too easy, I'm going to have to give it a go.
Any thoughts on if this would be a good method to test out new hops?
I think making 1 gallon batches is a great way to test new hops. Small enough that you can get through it somewhat quickly and try something different. Best of luck!
Do you think you could do the carbonation with a soda stream probably?
Yeah for sure!
I just watched a video by morebeer about the yeast in the dry hop for 24hrs. The guy visits the brewery of that brand . Basically Helps with bitterness and brings out more fruity flavors less piney
I am trying your idea but with lemon peels, lactic acid, and with one ounce of hops but for only 20 minutes and a little warm hop addition… then straining through a coffee filter. Wish me luck. I might have to dilute 😂 maybe it was too many hops but also the contact time isn’t as long. Then just a squirt of liquid stevia might be good at the end.
Edit: yes I added some citric acid and a few more gallons of water. I think your recipe exactly would be better.
The best I’ve made was kinda like a NA beer. Used the trub an wort at the end of a ipa brew day to make a 1.005 wort, us05, FG 1.000 spund, naturally carbed, hoppy, fresh delicious. I could dry hop it too, but haven’t tried yet.
Oh that sounds super interesting! Might have to try that
@@TheBruSho yeah it’s the only way I’ve found that gets just that little bit of fermentation character and acidity that lagunitas hop water tastes like.
Any chance you tried out leftover hops from brew day … tried that with a tea bag and hot water and later mixed it with carbonated water … didn’t turn out that bad I have to say.
I really like the Lagunitas, want to try this recipe in a highly concentrated version to use as an 'in the glass' dose with my Sodastream water. Thinking maybe make the same recipe in just 12 ounces instead of a gallon.
How did that go? Was it concentrated enough at 12 oz of H20 and 4g of hops?
Just in time for the Super Bowl BBQ. Thank you.
So Lagunitas actually does two rounds of hop additions. One is done in a whirlpool addition, and the second is done in a dry hop. You basically take a portion of the water (170 degrees) and place the hops in it. Those hops/water are added in the fermentor with the yeast for 2 days.
Haha did you watch the more beer video?
@@TheBruSho You got me 😇
I have fresh hops flowers that are ready to be picked. 🧐
Laganisa yeast to hop water does bio-transformation which is a game changer.
Great video!!! Am I the only one in the world who avoids those motueka hops? I've used them twice and had 2 beers taste like straight dish soap! Definitely one I stay away from! 😂😂😂 I'd love to be able to send someone a few south African hops they are all super tropical and fruity but ive never seen them used internationally.
Thanks! I brewed a beer a little while back with Southern Passion and it was really bursting with tropical flavor. South African hops deserve more shine!
Could this be done with like a simple Sodastreamer?
Yeah I don’t see why not
You need a newer soda stream - we have one of the originals and anything other than water makes a HUGE mess! The newer ones advertise that you can carbonate beverages with other ingredients. (Think of not yet carbonated home brew dripping from the ceiling….. yikes!)
GREAT video (you’ve got yourself a new subscriber) I’m making hope water right now, and was planning on running this exact test! I highly recommend you check out Art of Drinks method for making hop water! Would love to see a similar comparison using that method!
Very cool idea. I liked your trying to make beer from grocery store items, What do you think of making prison alcohol and making a vid, just cause I know u know alot about fermenting it would be cool to see your take on it
That could be a fun video, ty!
yeast does impart flavors to the water, much like vegetarians use brewers yeast on spaghetti to imaprt a cheese type flavor. So when they say yeast, there are many different types, jsut my guess here.
With brewers yeats its literallt a supertea in terms of nutrition and health benefits
did you experiment with calcium chloride?
4g?! I use like 2-4 oz for my batches 🤠 usually 4-5 gallons
Definitely going to skip a whirlpool or steep next time
ha I mean you could totally bump up the hops if you want. I found that was a good amount that didnt add too much bitterness. But totally tweak it to your preference.
