Raphnet is the gold standard of controller adapters - it's just one guy in Canada and every niche gaming hobby imaginable is dependant on him from Guitar Hero to Super Famicon enthusiasts. All their stuff is the highest quality when it comes to ease of driver setup, fast polling rates, and supporting the rarest perioherals imagineable like this wacko GameCube keyboard
To this day, it baffles me that no one ever used a similar design for wireless couch PC gaming. Wireless media keyboards pretty much all suck, but an updated design similar to this, with added trackball/trackpad, would be a fantastic option. Throw in Switch-style detachable controllers and it would be absolutely perfect.
It seems like their software for the adapter was developed on Linux primarily (at least the GUI part of it), because that's if I'm not mistaken the Adwaita theme that the buttons and dropdowns in the program use, which looks kinda out-of-place on Win10 ;) And it's probably developed in GTK, as that "Please wait…" popup looks just like when you put a simple Gtk.Label into an otherwise empty window.
@@honbra I've had a time where that was basically how everything looked for me, back when RasPis still used the "PiX" theme, as that looks fairly similar to Adwaita. And Adwaita is also the theme used by GNOME, if I'm not mistaken.
I don't quite think this is Adwaita exactly since it's just a bit off, but there's plenty of GTK software out there even for Windows. I wouldn't be shocked if this did use GTK.
gotta say, I love the idea of using this as your main keyboard for your computer. like imagine looking at someone's desk and they just have that sitting in front of it, and you're just like "oh, cute, it looks like a gamecube controller" and then they pick it up and start playing games with it
You want to know something? I don't even think I've ever seen anybody else use a Nintendo GameCube controller on a vintage Windows 98 computer before, at least right up until this very moment, so that's definitely something.
@@Aura_Mancer Used the 360 chatpad and tbh it weren't too bad, helped for typing in my password for my xbox live account and messaging a mate for no reason
@@Aura_Mancer the 360 one didn't compare to a regular keyboard but compared to phone keyboards of the time it was about on par. Didn't realise they still did it for the more-recent controllers though, that's kinda cool
I'd love to see keyboards with a left thumb joystick to replace WASD. Joystick movement with mouse aim is an amazing combo (when games actually support it).
Now that is real cool! Video game console keyboards being used on PCs is something I sort of dreamed of seeing. I wonder why the official GameCube keyboard was never released in North America, Europe and Oceania though? It's cool you were able to find a compatible adapter to get it to work on PCs. Nice job!
i wonder if phantasy star online blue burst (the pc port of phantasy star online) would work with this -- would be kind of funny to see it work on a version of the game it isn't intended for
Okay unironically, it might be kinda cool to play Half Life using wasd in the GCN keyboard and use the right hand buttons for shooting and stuff. Maybe.
He did a documentary about the origins of Bliss and visited it himself back in 2020 or 2021 and this was what it looked like when he visited it in the same position as the original photo was taken
I need a controller with a built-in keyboard, although I'll have to build it myself because I need a proper layout with a num pad. Imagine carrying around a 114 key keyboard around with you.
Next: the Xbox 360 chat pad please. There's a github project in the works but surely with your expertise it might actually become a usable piece of software lol
Hahah kew it was gona be the Raphnet one, those adapters are great, i've got one to use my Dreamcast Mouse and Hello kitty keyboard on PC, a friend has the Famicom one for that keyboard, they work fantastic!
If the first-party adapter works for the controller but not the keyboard, can you plug the controller jack into it, and plug the keyboard jack into the Raphnet adapter, and get the whole kit-and-kaboodle going?
Make iit wireless and map mouse to the stick and it'd be pretty handy. I use a mini wireless keyboard with a touch pad as it is for browsing on my couch with a decent sized modern tv and playing on my CRT next to it. I wouldn't mind having some analogue sticks as an option over a touch pad for the mouse. I used to do that way back in the day, having a wiimote with nunchuck as a wireless mouse that didn't require a surface.
I remember seeing this thing in a magazine and being insanely jealous that it was a Japanese exclusive. Of course, it wouldn't have worked with any of the games I actually played, anyways, but that didn't matter to little me lol.
I don't think that I myself would able to use that keyboard efficiently on a computer, as - basically what you said in the video - it was meant for Phantasy Star Online.
this adaptor even works for console emulators such as duckstation and pcsx2 along with a good list of titles such as super street fighter iv fallout 3 and new vegas tekken 6 and 7 mirrors edge socom confrontation kof xiii xiv and xv even hitman series and dishonored games and much more on ps3 and ps4
It's weird to see someone moving the character and turning the camera on its yaw axis with the left joystick... I'm more familiar with the left joystick being movement, and the right joystick being camera.
This all great and fascinating, but can you play Black Mesa via Steam on Windows 10 with the keyboard controls mapped to the GameCube controller's keyboard and use a mouse on the side to look/aim? I don't just want to know, I need to know!

damn we actually need a modern gamepad-keyboard hybrid

It just works as intended, because of the Keyboard/Controller hybrid. Great job Michael!
oh man PLEASE get the other adapter and try it. That is so unique, it is disappointing not to see it fully functional
Raphnet is amazing for making these adapters. I've loved using mine just to use my Guitar Hero controllers on PC and it's been amazing

In the thumbnail, that keyboard is so yellowed that I full on thought it was made of bamboo.

The perfect keyboard to use with Dolphin emulator.

You really should consider Retro Brightening that controller...
The cyberdeck possibilities with this thing are endless

@Michael MJD as always great video!
When you think about it, those GPD laptops are kinda like this setup.
Raphnet makes great stuff.
If these weren't so damn expensive I'd buy one and use it to take notes in my uni lectures
I really hope third party controllers like this become available at some point, because this would be perfect for a Raspberry Pi gaming machine.
neat, a unique color. age-beige
rare! never realease but slowly developed over time.
yes we need a full half life longplay with this controller
