      @@techymomof6873 it's a big challenge, I sale brand new electronics in Malawi. Imagine now that each time I have a New HP I have to carefully open it and slightly losen the hinges something I don't enjoy doing given a new computer, but still do just to prolong the hinges life span, especially when I am selling to university students I give them 4years warranty so it's a must to have the hinges issue prevented for me. I have also noted that lately even other brands like Lenovo, (Not ThinkPad) but the basic cheaper Lenovo it's a similar issue partly to do with the cheap plastic casings which can't withstand pressure.

    THIS WORKS!! I just tried it, and I must say, I was willing to spend around $50 to get the hinge fixed. I don't have that little dropper for the baking soda, so I used one of my tiny screw drivers to "shovel" some in place. I already had the super glue and baking soda, so this is just priceless!

    I've never heard of using baking soda with super glue. Very interesting! What I usually do is drill a hole in the bottom case, where each brass nut is broken loose, and run a small long bolt through the bottom. I put the original brass nut on first, tighten it down a bit, then the hinge on top of that, and another nut on top of the hinge.

    Another tip is to put the metallic inserts on the tip of a hot soldering iron and drop them slowly on the plastic casing. The hot insert will sink in the casing as your detach the soldering iron with something a screw driver . You can continue to add super glue or form some plastic around the inserts.This is permanent

    Thanks. This was very helpful. I was able to repair my partner's Lenovo laptop with the bad hinge design which tightens over time.
    The superglue and bicarb soda worked so well, it is amazing.
    Don't forget to adjust the hinge tension - some hinges get tighter as they age, which puts excessive force on the surrounding plastics. I also added a little lubrication to the hinge.
    So far, so good...

    I've used this trick for a lot of years, for my own laptop is fine, but for clients computers I just use 2 part epoxy. Harder to affix it in place, because it takes time to cure, but afterwards is near indestructible. One of my heavier media laptops has metal parts broken break apart after years of use, so no epoxy or superglue can help - there I just DRILLED TROUGH the laptop body, and put a steel plate on the other side. Looks ugly but it works. Because design allows for it to work. In newer slimmer laptops the plate and end of screws would cut into screen when fully closed.

    J.B weld also works great!

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  4 місяці тому

      Yes, J.B. Weld is great stuff, but it's not perfect for that particular application. Cyanoacrylate has low viscosity, which allows it to get inside tiny cracks between plastic parts and the brass insert. On the other hand, J.B. Weld will only create a strong bond on the surface, leaving the inside structure compromised and likely to fail again in the future. For the past 15 years, we've had ZERO returns during the warranty period using cyanoacrylate and adhesive filler.

    is the baking soda combined with glue dangerous if it sits on top of pcb?? (not in crucial part of course). The standoff is very near in a pcb, so the baking soda has to sit on top of the pcb, otherwise i cant build the "baking soda wall". Also, is epoxy glue a better solution for these kind of plastics?

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  3 роки тому +1

      Epoxy is not gonna work for that particular application. We've fixed hundreds of laptops in our repair shop with this methods and none of those clients returned back with the same defect. Once the compound is hardened you can cut it with a utility knife to remove its excess. Nothing will happened if you apply it to the PCB too.

    Tried this and it didn't work for me. Although I couldn't undo the screws so I just had to put the hinge into place and then put the glue into the gaps so that may be why. Used a strong adhesive from a local hardware shop instead which did the trick for me. Thanks anyways

      @ElectronicsComputers  4 роки тому

      I've been using this method for over 10 years now and I give 3 month guarantee to all my clients and none of them ever came back to me with the same issue. Just repeat all the steps. First, apply super glue on all broken parts, then apply backing soda and repeat the process until you make it nice and strong. The brass inserts must be surrounded by that compound and there should be more compound at the bottom. It should look like a mountain. And be extremely careful with the threads. If you apply glue on the thread it will be very difficult to clean.
