DUDE! That was an AWESOME and in depth coverage of that Ziv Malibu mess I grew up watching. Still got the VHS tapes till this day. I'm glad somebody said something 😌
Upon rewatching this, i kinda realized something about those first eps of ZIVs Harlock dub. Episodes one and nine are most likley the dubs that Toei comissioned M&M to dub. As the voices in those two are very similiar to the Mazinger Dub from M&M (Rocket Panch). It explains why it used the original OST rather than ZIVs new music.
I have never seen Captain Harlock besides of in your videos, CPF. If I got that right, you dressed as Harlock in one of your movies from way back then. But I know Captain Future, from German TV in the 80s. I even used to play as Captain Future, because I was a child and Future impressed me. Also, the German soundtrack is so awesome, I still like to listen to the soundtrack today. Also, "camera movements" like the one where the camera moves around Harlock, to give the impression that he's the hero, totally remind me of Captain Future. The same goes for the animation style. And perhaps also the stories. I rewatched Captain Future a few years ago, about 30 years after I had watched the series the first time, and it really doesn't hold up. Unlike the original Ghostbusters. Thanks for this re-upload, CPF.
I think toei could have come to an agreement but leji had a hissyfit and the tapes were likely the equivulant of better than nothing and we gotta give em something and ninja high school and gold digger still exist wish furrlough and shanda the panda did too but oh well makes me wonder if that means harlock isnt almost owned by disney and they havent prepped to take it
I actually think the additions you added to get around the copyright make the video better. At least for me. Also I know it's probably a hot take but the ziv dub for episodes 2 and 3 will never not be funny to me. It's probably do to the fact I have seen all of discotek's release beforehand though.
Well, it's not a new video. It got taken down back in May, so I just waited out the copyright strike and then uploaded this modified version to take its place.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Hope you can get that one back up. I know on your site you had it uploaded elsewhere but yeah that one is FASCINATING. One of the best examples of what a mess anime localization was back in the old days. 2 days to slam two unrelated shows together and BS up a script?! Yeesh!
I think the technical term is "not giving a rat's ass." Somebody pushed some buttons, walked away assuming it was set up correctly, and no one ever looked at the master before mass production. When this first came out, I went to a local comic store to pick it up, and asked if they could preview it for me first, as they had a TV/VCR set up behind the counter. I first noticed it was just the old ZIV release repackaged, and then about two minutes in the sound went out of sync. I mentioned that to the guys behind the counter, and they were surprised, claiming to have just been watching the tape and to not have noticed. Make what you will of that. In any case, I didn't plunk down thirty-four bucks for the damn thing after seeing that.
well.....i don't quite follow the soap opera appeal of anime. I do like the hot take you have of it. I just noticed Corn Pone Flicks comment on a Spooky Astronauts video and it made me excited if there was a new video. THere is. Hopefully you keep making more.
I'm personally not interested in anime anymore, and haven't been for ages, though this show (the un-butchered version) is still a great series. I thought "hot take" meant some kind of spontaneous, unconsidered reply to a new event, though. This is not only not a new video (it's repost of one UA-cam took down that had been here since 2014), but the event recounted herein dates back to 1991.
you know i was just thinking about this video. such a shame Harlock had such shitty English releases over the years. tho i do joke with those bad dialogues from this bad dub from clips i have found.. to me they sound like an internet joke dub.. only i guess this was official.

Rest in peace Leiji Matsumoto

That's probably what happened.
I had the Ziv "first attempt" VHS as a kid, I love everything about it, the voice acting is epic for the most part.
Yeah, had we got this instead in 1980 or '81, it might've went somewhere.

Great to have new CPF content, thanks.
It's not actually new...it's a repost of a six year-old video UA-cam took down for some dumbass reason.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks well it's new to me and that's all that matters 😂 thanks as always.
I'd never heard of this, but hey, you're doing a "treatment" of it and that makes it all more than worthwhile.
This is what Sergeant Knox worked on after he escaped the Comet Empire explosion.
HA!
I see Tim Eldred in there. I know him since his Yahoo Group back in the early 2000s.

This is probably my 6th time seeing this video and it's still great
@Patrick Hamos what do you mean a rookie?
Am I crazy or is the guy at 3:14 voiced by Dave Coulier?
If it is, he's uncredited.
And this is why you should never hire John Travolta to localize, and sound mix your anime.
Am I the only one who likes the ZIV/Mark Mercury music?
You might well be, other than Mark Mercury himself.
Nope
I think it's fantastic frankly
The song still slaps I'm sorry 😆
Here from comic tropes. Good video!

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks As luck would have it, I haven't seen this one yet!
I was wondering why the original was deleted. But I'm glad it's back.
Calling mayu Maya is tragic., that's harlocks lovers name witch caused confusion for English fans.
Meanwhile I have plenty of original broadcast VHS recordings of the Harmony Gold dub of Captain Harlock.
Yeah, me too. I did that one back when the original version of this video went up.

@@GELTONZ What do you mean? That's one's still up right here on this channel. They only struck this one for some reason.
8:30 you gotta be fkn kidding me....how could they do such a huge fuk up?

I guess you could say these dubs were B.A.D.
