Wow Liam, I asked and you delived. Warren, thank you for explaining how your day and week is planned out. Also the demands on staff when there is a big week or fortnight coming up depending on the competition sylabus. The stimp and roll demonstrations also really valuable. I asked our greenskeeper some time ago about pet projects he would like to do around the course. He replied "plenty if I had time, resourses and budget, which I don't". The pitch mark repair demonstration is also really interesting. Firstly, I love having to repair a pitch mark because it means I've hit a green on the fly. I was always taught to push everything inwards towards the centre and lifting the soil as Warren demonstrated would just break roots and cause the grass to die. Warren if you can clarify that would be great and is there a different repair depending on the trajectory of impact?
Great, great Video, thank you Warren and Liam.

Very informative! When I was at the local university, my Physical Recreation class was always Golf. At that time, in the mid to late 1970's, everything was done with machines. But, I really enjoyed learning how a golf course was maintained.
My Golf Mates always took the time to repair pitch marks on the greens, and damage to the fairways that other golfers had not replaced or filled with sand.
Every golfer should watch this video Liam!

Very interesting. The only thing that bothers me is the pitch mark repair technique. The vast majority of green keepers, superintendents, agronomists and so on say you want to push back from the back of the mark and never lift up the prongs and grass... Which is what's shown here. I guess a "bad repair that looks good" is still a "better than most repairs" but that has me worried a bit (as repairing pitch marks is my main pet peeve on the course).

Excellent and much needed video Liam for golfers to get a greater understanding and appreciation of the fabulous work being done by greenkeeping staff. We take so much for granted with not a clue about the effort to present a course to the standard we expect. I must admit that I was aware of a lot of the content as I served on the Board of Management in my club in Tralee for a no of years and got an insight into what it took to present our world class links to the standard expected. Finally the proprietors and members of Carus Green should be so thankful that they have someone like Warren who as well as being so professionally competent is clearly very passionate about his role.

Thanks Liam. This has made me appreciate, a lt more, the work that green keepers do to make our golf days as enjoyable as possible. The club I used to be a member of had fantastic greens, but I don't think anyone who played the course appreciated what they had to do to make them as good as they were. I say were, because the course has been shut down for many years now, due to vandals pouring weed killer all over the the greens, at a great cost to the owner Vivien Saunders, to the point where she had to shut the course down. For those who want to know, it was Abbotsley Golf Hotel and Country Club.

I mow or roll greens in the northwest USA. During our summer we are on the greens by 4:45. In October, we don’t start until a leisurely 6:00 AM. This is tempered by radiation frost on these cooler mornings. A true frost/freeze keeps us off. But the radiation frost/tip freeze happens at dawn and usually last about two hours until it warms enough to melt the frost. I enjoyed seeing the differences and the similarities between the Northwest of USA and your turf superintendent. I like the idea of computer driven mowers as getting staff interested in starting work at 4:30 is getting more difficult, though we have a good mix of older and younger workers.
What I enjoyed most is when regular players see your video and realize how much effort goes on every day to making their golfing experience a good one. Every bunker is raked every morning. If there are footprints where your ball landed, there were left by a group in front of you. Also, greens are leveled every morning, often there are 10 to 25 deep unrepaired ball marks, especially on par 3’s and some par 4’s.
I play three times a week and I really appreciate those golfers who when walking up to their ball, repair ball marks on their way across the green. Now those are the good golfers to me. So simple, so fast, unless you understood how to appreciate it, you wouldn’t even notice them doing it. Somewhat the same on fairway divots. Pour repair sand, step on it and move on.
I hope this gets a million views.

Very interesting Liam. Learned a lot. I'd like to see more details - in future, maybe follow some greenskeepers around to show us how the various machines work and when and why they do what they do. Now I understand the reason why nicer courses cost what they do.
I get pissed off when playing and find so many pitch marks on nice greens. Literally 5 seconds to fix. Even my playing partners can barely be bothered even though they see me repairing pitch marks on every damn green. I walk over and fix theirs - half the time they don't even acknowledge it. Bastards!

Outstanding video! A ton of work goes into maintaining a golf course. Having worked on course, I can relate to everything Warren was saying. The labor shortage is a problem; however, part of that problem is the poor pay. Like any profession, you must pay well to keep talented employees. Courses in Florida, for example, pay as little as possible... sometimes just the minimum wage. Getting people to come to work at 4:30am every day, and expecting them to be highly proficient in operating multiple pieces of equipment (yet paying them the bare minimum) is a recipe for high turnover. Keep great employees by compensating them adequately. The outcome is a better operation and premium course conditions. I've seen a lot of damage done to greens and other areas simply because management hired cheap labor who had questionable skills using the equipment. LOTS of injuries, too. Again, great video! Cheers!

At the second club I was a member of which was one of the premier clubs in Nottinghamshire I was fortunate to play with the pro almost every Friday... One of the things he drilled into me as a new member was leave wherever I was ( bunker.. Green.. Tee) in better condition than you found it.. Some 30 years on I have never forgotten his advise... To the non repairers of pitch marks shame on you and I will bet your the first to moan..
We can fix this problem by being asked in wherever you have to report to see your pitch mark repairer and if you haven't got one your not allowed on the course... I know that this won't make them do it but at least they will have the tools.... By now I'm sure you realise pitchmark are my pet hate...
Great vid Liam keep up the great work...
