While I totally understand the reason why the giant apple snail species are illegal to own or sell, they’re so damn cool. I remember the 10 gallon aquarium in my elementary school library that had an enormous giant apple snail that was bright yellow and the size of a literal softball. I would spend so much time looking at that snail in third grade, which dwarfed all of the mollies and guppies it shared its tank with. I credit that tank with starting my love for aquarium keeping!

My golden mystery snail ate about 80 worth of plants overnight! The only thing that he eats slowly is hornwort. So much for my dream of a planted aquarium! Now it's just rocks, sticks and veggie kebabs. LOL

I just got into keeping them last year and really fell in love with them. I love having these bright yellow orbs cruising around the tank and holding their food in their foot while munching on it lol. Today I found my very first egg clutch and I'm going to try to incubate them. I raised the water level of my tank a little yesterday and I think that's what triggered them to climb up onto the underside of the lid to lay eggs.

My apples take rides on plants. They cling to them and just relax and move with it, wherever it goes.
Im not sure about their diet yet, since I only kept them for 2-3 months now. I had my first hatchlings today and feel really proud.
All in all i have to say; Even tho I keep fish with them (Medakas) my eyes tend to focus my apples. I love them, their colors and their character.

Cool video, we just got a mystery snail... he’s in with 3 small goldfish that seem to leave it pretty much alone. I feed them cooked lettuce, carrots and peas that have been peeled a few times a week and the snail seems to enjoy all those. The fish also get flaked food and bottom feeder pellets. I’ve also got algae pellets but the snail doesn’t seem to care much for those. Any tips on keeping it healthy? What is best to feed it?

I really love them. I got into snails a while back as a companion for a betta. I found I loved the snails more than I loved other fish :3 They're just so cute as they zip around waving their antennae! And it's fun to see them mow down on veggies.
I did also quickly learn they will go roaming if you don't secure your tank. Fortunately I followed their slime trail and put them back in, and they were ok.

Always had an interest in snails and have had as many as 15 different species. The mystery snails have always been faves. One summer I had more than a hundred clutches laid in just a few weeks. No way I had space to raise those numbers! Still kind of bums me out when I find frozen packs of P. diffusa meat in the local Asian markets. I caught a pair of mine mating awhile back and managed to get a pic or two of the male in action, so to speak. He was pretty impressive for so small a beast. Used to raise them in a tank with a sliding glass top, made it easy to leave clutches in situ and I could watch the hatching process from the back of the top glass too. My snails eat all my excess frogbit, salvinia, duckweed and various veggies. BIG appetites, yes, but fun to watch. I think of them as living jewels in my tanks.

  • @charlesschultz2611

I've watched multiple videos and everyone says these snails only lay eggs above water. I have seen multiple clutches laid in the sand and only a few above water, I check around the top every couple of days. I started with just two now I have around 3 dozen the size of nickels and not even going to count the tiny ones in a 4 month span.

Agreed, these snails are vastly misundertood! What a great and fair profile! I loved all of the detailed information you provide; my mystery snails are crazy lol. They love to fall from the top of the tank and land on a bed of either wisteria, java moss or cabombas haha. They really do eat everything. I keep 2 in a tank with 6 panda cories and they coexist very well and also eat the same food so thats nice. Whatever the cories are getting, the mystery get a portion as well.

I have one these guys living with my Betta, and both get on incredibly well. The Betta leaves him alone, the only time he "had ago" at the snail was while he was eating, and even then he was aiming for the food and not his friend.
While I was looking to get rid of my snail, I've decided against it. He's not really hurting anyone. And it is nice to see him zip around the tank.

At one time my golden mystery snails bred like crazy. I had hundreds of them in two tanks and a big tub outdoors. But I moved to a smaller place, had to get rid of the tub and smaller tank and set up my remaining tank differently. I doubt they will breed any more because my tank is not tightly covered enough to create the humility required. I got down to just one big old one, so I bought 6 new ones. I was having issues with the shell going thin or getting pitted at one point, but I now get pellets make of ground oyster shell (intended for poultry) put it in mesh bags and place them in the chambers of my filters. They really help with the calcium level in the tank. I tested this week and the water hardness was moderately high, despite the Ph being at only about 6.5. I would also assume that bacteria grow on the surface of the pellets and help with the nitrogen cycle, since they are within the water flow of the filter.

I thank you for sharing your knowledge on the mystery snails. I wish I could find detailed information on rabbit snails but there's not many people who have the rabbit snails. They are very heavy poopers. My little guy makes most of the mess in my tank himself. Only takes a few days for him to mess it up after a good cleaning. Also depends on how often you feed them. Some people do twice a day, I only feed mine once since it takes awhile for him to finish it off.

Rachel, I have a 20 gallon tank devoted to duck weed (to feed my goldfish) and snails. I currently have two clutches--so cute. But I am curious about something. I was watching your other video and you spoke about how the babies will get lines in their shells if the water parameters change, which got me to wondering--when I do a water change, will that cause their shells to get a line because of the obvious change in the water? Also, how often should I do a water change for these guys? I have a sponge filter in the tank and multiple air stones. My water has no ammonia, nitrites or nitrates, I assume, because of the amount of plants I have in the water--so as long as that is the case, is it even necessary to do a water change? Thanks!

I noticed that my cognac was constantly on the shell of the small ivory. At first I thought they were mating, but the little ones she'll became brittle. I do feed them daily and have duffle bone in the tank. Well I ended up removing the little one and placed him in another tank tonight. Was i right to do this? I have a 10 gallon shrimp tank I treated with peacur C and when I did that, I removed Nerite snail and even after months long water change, I cannot put Nerite snail back;they slowly die... I know snail is good for shrimp tank.Shrimp itself is doing great and see more shrimplets but once population reach to certain level, cycle could get crush so I want to get snail back into the tank.If I put mystery snail to see if it lives in there, mystery snail would add too much ammonia all at once because of size and water amount and not good?Is it best to try different one;smaller one like ramshorn? Also, mystery snail eats shrimp baby? When google, I see some posts mystery snail ate their shrimp etc..When you put mystery snail whoes diet is not mainly algae, we should target feed mystery snail besides feeding shrimp? Thank you.

Thank you Rachel. It would be nice if in the future you can make a video of your micro crabs and panther crabs but also other crustaceans like the vampire shrimp [not a crab] but it would be interesting :)

Do you ever worry about destroying egg clutches when doing water changes? I'm always worried that I'm throwing away some fish's egg clutch.

Just found your channel and I love it! Thank you so much.
Question unrelated to the video: I'm looking to make some hand-sculpted pieces for a freshwater tank, but I can't find a whole lot of information on what materials would be safe to work with. I'm most familiar with polymer clays, but I feel that would be too fragile even if it weren't bad for the water in some way... Do you have any suggestions? Materials, colorants, etc... I'm at a bit of a loss.
Thank you again! All the best!

I do this often just bake at a low temp for longer to get it hard without cracking, they can get really soft when in water for a while, if not baked long enough

I have a question: my male gold snail and female purple snail mates and the female laid a clutch. I want to hatch them but I’m wondering, will the babies be gold or purple? Or a mix of both. I was hoping to get some light footed purples but I’m not sure how snail genetics works lol

Rachel O'leary I have a few of these and i am concerned about them making millions and then their shells stinking. The shells stinking is something I have heard about, I dont want my room stinking. What do you think of this?

Hi Rachel, how often should I feed my mystery snail? You didn't mention any specifics about feeding schedule. My snail lives in a planted tank with no visible algae. Temp is consistently 78 degrees. His (her?) tank mate is a very young female betta, and so far, there's no nipping. I feed my mystery snail half an algae wafer (for bottom feeders) on most days, but sometimes I skip a day. I once fed him some minced, blanched and cooled organic carrots, but he ignored the veggies. I hope the wafers are sufficient and balanced. Thank you.
