    Interesting! In the US, we don't usually put roughage in the grain, but make sure to feed hay before grain so they have the fiber in their stomachs to help the grain pass through and prevent their stomach acid from being overactive. I wish we did feed like this though. I'm a huge believer in tons of roughage and grain as a supplemental element of their diet. Beet pulp is more commonly added to grain out here, but even that isn't for its fiber, but to aid in weight gain. My horse gets basically double the hay of everyone else at the barn, in a hay bag and some loose in his stall. Sometimes I get funny looks when they find out how much hay my guy gets, but I'd rather know he has enough to last him through the night. I also wish more people out here would understand that grain shouldn't be given in large quantities and for weight gain. Here,
    if there is a thin horse, even if it's out of work, it tends to receive way too much grain for their workload. (I know this is a super late comment, but I just found it really interesting how different we feed out here.)

      Kathryn Schaller I have 6 horses that all eat in hay bags but my one horse is older and gets three times as much food, beet pulp is fed to them all though. Fyi im from the US too!

    I don’t have a horse yet but I’ve watched several other videos today on horse care and none helped as much as this one. Honestly none other really helped at all. This is the first one to really answer my questions instead of just telling me the blatantly obvious. Thank you for making this. You have possibly just earned a new subscriber.

    I use a kitchen wand whisk with a handle, so I don't have to bend down so much to clean sides & can scrub while use some horse water at same time. I should get one with a longer handle! If whisk gets too dirty, then I pop it into the dishwasher.

    My horse lives in a field with a few other horses. (2)
    she gets fed 2x a day. The morning and the evening.
    She gets:
    one scoop of sweet feed
    1 section of hay (1 flake)
    Grass 24/7
    She only gets ridden 2/3x a week.

    Minimum of 1 1/2 hrs before exercise, minimum of 1/2 hr after exercise and 1/2 hr before turning out for feeding. I usually leave 2 hrs between feeding and working. So when going out driving, I'll get horse in at 8, feed them, leave them to eat and relax while I clean carriage and harness, about 9 am give them a good groom, before harnessing up and get myself ready and then go out about 9.45 -10 am

    I'm doing a 98 day mustang gentling competition in the winter. They will be fed alfalfa and grass hay, but I'm not sure what grains/supplements to feed them. They are a yearling, and won't be ridden at all, but will be lunged everyday along with groundwork daily. What do you think?

    You make som really good points in this video :) however, it is important not to work your horse on an empty stomach. You are right when saying that the horse should not eat a lot of grain etc. before work, but you should feed it hay/alfalfa or similar to reduce the stomach acid and therefore avoid ulcers.

    I'm so confused on feeding horses, like how do you know how much they intake grass when outside, and how much hay to give them, and if they have enough hay and grass so they don't need any grain

    • @ThisEsMe
      @ThisEsMe  7 років тому +2

      Ajringallo 04 You can't measure how much grass they eat but you can with hay but that is not a problem as the quality of the grass in the field changes at different times of the year. If your horse is looking over weight you can strip graze their field by putting up an electric fence so there is less grass that they can eat or you can up their exercise. When you buy grain from your store on the back of the packet is says how much you should feed your horse on the back depending on work, and height. But if they look over or under weight feed a bit more/less. I mostly do it by eye as Casper's condition varies :)
