The 'very basics' is perfect level for me to learn the foundational aspects of the BGS. Excellent work sir. Looking forward to the next instalments in this video series. Hope you enjoy your time away 🚀 o7
I'm really new and there's a lot I don't know but it seems to me that the most basic explanation of BGS might include what the hell BGS stands for. I'm three minutes in I still have no idea what the hell BGS is.
That's definitely my bad! I should do a new video that explicitly makes it clear. It stands for "BackGround Simulation". The BGS touches all the populated systems in Elite Dangerous: - System states by the controlling faction, which affects what you can do in the system and who controls it - Faction states, including economic and security sliders, which impacts markets, events going on in each system, modifiers for things like trade, combat bounties, exploration data, and so on - Wars and elections between factions, which you can push or fight against to transfer control of systems and assets - Trade opportunities - Ship and module availability - and everything else that you see in populated systems... If it changes, it's the BGS. And you can manipulate it! Manipulating the BGS is fun, and learning all the ins and outs can be challenging. I learn new stuff every week, and I've been doing it since 2019, but you can learn the basics in a short video like this one.
The game has a Political Leaderboard in the Squadron Hub which measures BGS activity. You can see it in the Right Hand Panel > Squadrons > Leaderboards > Political. I'd say any of those groups in the first page are really good at BGS.
@vanderaj I used to play on Xbox and the 1st 3 times awards were given, our squad took 2nd each time. We eventually found out there were easy exploits to gain rank on the leaderboards so the leaderboards don't necessarily reflect groups that are knowledgeable on bgs.

I had a good if exhausting time away! $dayjob conference was the largest ever, and we had a great time.
Thank you Andrew for taking the time to explain BGS in such a simple way. Looking forward to watching your other videos on this topic. o7
My pleasure!
Nice work on the complete guide and this gentle introduction, much appreciated.
Great video/explanation... gotta find pt 2 now :) thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Oooh, another creator for The List!
Oh yeah! Soon, we'll have enough ED creators to compete with the number of cat subreddits!
@@vanderaj heh, all good. I highlight 5 every weekend, more the better.

which player group would you say is the best at BGS?
