Any chance we can get some tips running manual focus while using a zoom lens? The technique you use would be awesome to know.

Great tips Pete. I love setting up behind the catcher and pulling focus from pitcher to batter. And I’d be lost without focus peaking. I use red, but didn’t know I could change colors…gonna go check that now 🤝

I’ve been going back and forth lately with manual and auto. I started out with a GH5 several years ago and the AF was dreadful, so forced myself to always shoot manual in both sports and other types of gigs. But with the FX3 it’s so good that I’m always using it when doing interviews and press conferences (common thing here for football journalism work). In live action it’s 50/50, depending on whether I want to follow a certain player, the ball and what kind of sport it is. I do a lot of handball and sometimes refs and player in corners get in the way so then manual is the way to go. But because that sport moves so quickly and unpredictable sometimes, I feel like AF has given me more possibilities now to capture those unpredictable moments that move too fast. But I would recommend anyone starting out to learn to shoot manual, make it difficult for yourself and then later on you can switch depending on the situation.

Do you think the GH5 is servicable (in either AF or MF) for sports/basketball. I currently use the a6400 and love the af, but really want 4k60 fos

@@hehey8596I think the image is great, especially when taking the price tag into consideration. However, I always used manual focus since the autofocus was iffy and it really helped me get used to that alot. And even now with a FX3 I still have to do that depending on the situation. But before that I used a GH5 for many years and never had any complaints (I mostly do handball).

I think my biggest issue is how do I have a camera on a high hat/monopod/tripod that needs one hand to the camera around while then trying to use the other hand to zoom AND manually focus. I ain't got but so many limbs 😭wonder if there's any tips on how to accomplish all of that

good question bro, id say its hard to do both at once which is a drawback but be gradual with both if you do them

A really informative video! I'm a fan of vintage lenses that require manual focus and your tips also apply nicely. Many lenses I review are valued for the image wide open, which narrows the focal plane significantly. When you're shooting action, presumably from just off the diamond, you must be shooting at at least f/8 and probably more like f/16 no? Thanks again for the cool vid!
