Please know that I will take criticism in the comments and on my social medias, I will take your thoughts into consideration then make a final statement on where I feel Boombox is right now. Again I don't bite and who I am in the video does not reflect my personality overall. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy my first piece of content for this wonderful game : ) Edit: I did make a mistake at 19:43 IM SO SORRY (I hate davinci resolve so much)
Its honestly such a tragedy at what happened to boombox. I remember my earlier days of phighting and i used to absolutely fear boombox mains and sometimes just regular boomboxes in general. People who knew how to play him would dominate rounds and it inspired me to play him. I became overall decent with him and i was proud that i learned how to play him since he was one of my first more complex characters i learned to play. But oh my gosh the devs absolutely destroyed any bits of what made boombox a playable character. I sometimes now just play him to pretend im reliving what i call the ✨Boombox glory days✨
That’s fair, I’m sorry about what they did. They absolutely butchered my boy, I remember not batting an eye at first, primarily because I mained Rocket ( which I plan on talking about how overtuned he is now ) and Vine Staff. After I started learning more classes I got to boombox, never understood why I didn’t see them as much as I did a year ago but then slowly started realizing the problems after 50 games in and just got irritated, tried persevering, but got frustrated even more leading to this video. Again, I hope the rework does you and him justice, cause I believe he needs it after this disaster wave of patches.
Heya! *Actual* #1-2 competitive boombox player here!! I wanna start off by saying that i love this video, and I do agree that boombox is in a pretty pitiful state right now...However there's still a large number of points I wanted to give insight on, as I believe boombox is still more than viable in casual and competitive play! Here's my rebuttals: The metronome being "offbeat" isn't really much of a problem, as the timing is still consistent and becomes trivial once you get it down to muscle memory. (you should never think about the metronome as being based on sound or visuals really at all. pure muscle memory is like 98% of what to learn) Also, its physically impossible to tie it to the music anyways due to a number of factors. I do agree that it is still not favorable for new or laggy players though. The passive 15% speed isn't groundbreaking but still extremely solid, as you will basically ALWAYS have it active, letting you catch up to just about every phighter in the game, forcing them to use a movement ability to get away. While his m1 damage leaves some to be desired, you fail to mention that he outranges EVERY melee other than katana, so good positioning combined with knockback positioning tools can easily let you stay healthy and sometimes even come out with advantage! Also, once you get better at the metronome and using m2 only when necessary his damage gets a little more solid. boombox having no escape options is simply not true. m2, e, AND q are all perfectly viable escape options, and the knockback/positioning they provide is greatly overlooked in the video. while he does lack a horizontal movement option, letting other phighters use theirs to catch up, an e cast/recast/m2/q up to a ledge AFTER or AS they use their movement ability cancels theirs out and lets you get away for free, especially with the passive haste you have! I do agree that his options aren't great compared to some other phighters though. m2 shield output to teammates is *completely* ignored in the video, which feels a little unfair given how solid it is when used at the right times. Not only does it provide good burst sustain, but it also is AMAZING in team fights as its AOE can end up flipping the fight up to 200+ health in your teams favor in a SINGLE MOVE. The haste also makes m2 an even BETTER escape/positioning tool, burst speed is amazing for that! Finally, its really not that hard to get back up to 4 charges. Losing them all is annoying for sure but in a conquer setting, you can easily get them back in ~3 seconds just by staying on point, which you should be doing anyways. (in annihilate... Ummmmmmm Uhhhhh lets just move On!!) something important not mentioned in the video is bb's ability to stay on point for a long period of time is a WONDEROUS trait about boombox! good bb players will get top on the points leaderboard almost every game, cuz of his more passive yet still close quarters playstyle, and since he's such an annoying little rat to approach sometimes. This will almost always have a really impactful effect on the game, even though it can be hard to notice to the untrained eye! Boombox is not an easy target for half the cast. A boombox player that utilizes knockback as a get-off-me tool whenever possible and holds up shield well its VERY frustrating for basically every phighter, and honestly his matchups are better than most of the other supports. (some of which I'll get to soon) I think E shield's health is totally fine. its not *supposed* to be an omega bullet-sponge, its supposed to be a tool to help your team engage, lasting long enough to get your team into the fight or as a way of defending yourself against a pesky range until you escape, and it does that very well! Plus, I honestly can't recall the last time my E shield has ever broken or timed out cuz I'm ALWAYS getting in that extra recast damage, so it never goes to waste! the fact that you can cast it TWICE as a way to keep enemies at bay and making sure they don't get too close honestly makes E one of bb's best moves. It's hitbox is so big and AOE that its pretty decent in fights too! Finally, if you notice your teammate getting harassed, just knock them away or hold up shield next to them (when against ranged) and they have enough time to escape easily! More on the E shield: In the "effective instances" section, you forgot to mention that medkit's m1 + m2 are blocked by the shield. This also feels a bit unfair because medkit is pretty much USELESS against you until your shield runs out or you force them to use their teleport. Same goes for vinestaff!! vinestaff doesn't even have a teleport, the ONLY thing they can do is sometimes hit a well-timed E! While their health pool is annoying, you have an AMAZINGGGG matchup against them! plus their health pool is annoying to EVERY phighter... *someone* has to deal that damage, might as well be you! Also, the subspace Q instance, i never found it to be that bad for boombox, since you can then escape the Q very quickly and it usually goes against the subspaces original intention. Also, if they try and Q you when you're right up in their face (which you should be anyways) the Q lands right in their face, vulning themself and making them an even easier target! I do agree that there are soooo many counters to bb ult nowadays, and it can be realllllly hard to get good value due to that plus its small radius. However, its cast time is not an important issue. Once you play him long enough you know when you can and can't ult. Even in lobbies with super high-skill players, i practically never get shutdown mid-windup because i know how to plan my ults and how to utilize every strategy i can to make myself safe, none of which are mentioned in the video (such as using E and Q for additional safety). It can be annoying for new players, but that just means its a slight skill floor increase, which i don't see as inherently harmful. While there's so much that brings his ult down, if everything goes right, it can STILL be the most powerful ult in a match, and its deny potential is undeniable in high level play, so I can't in good faith put it as the worst ult. Even in casual play it can still swing an overtime like its nothing. Also the 50 permanent shield is extremely good, which again is not really mentioned in the video! (as i was writing this comment m2 and phinisher range got buffed LOL so that's nice too!) Finally, the matchups! I talked with some other pro boombox mains about your matchups and we had some differences. Sword and scythe are about an equal-ish/medium-low counter to bb, as your extra range + knockback lets you keep yourself safe from sword, and your passive haste lets you get up in scythe's face, denying her of critical hits and making her damage falter considerably! a sub or vine in a 1v1 scenario AND under the right circumstances can lean in their favor, but a majority of the time you leave them helpless for an easy winnable matchup with your haste/E shield. Skate is also a pretty easy matchup cuz his offboard range is so short and you just like... press E once and you're safe from his m1s/m2 for a good while. Usually skates will give up before long. Finally, while you can absorb some of slings damage with your shield, you are HELPLESS against him when he goes up in the air, and his hover/dashes means you're basically never catching up to him. Hard counter, probably the hardest counter in the roster other than the tanks. Ok one last thing I wanna point out that he does still falter a lot in Annihilate. You have to really change your playstyle, and you have to be REALLLLY careful, but it can still be pulled off! Getting charges is a lot harder, but you still have tools to keep yourself from taking too much damage, as well as some small support for your team. You prolly won't get high damage, but as long as you don't get out of position and die too often you're still not throwing by picking him! Sorry for talking for so much!! I promise I'm almost done... Again, while I do think he's fallen off quite a lot he's still a menace and provides burst speed, burst shield, point presence, knockback positioning tools, and chase potential, all of which cement boombox as a viable option that has a lot of potential. I hope his rework makes him more inviting to new players, cause barely anybody plays him... but I've stuck with boombox for a year now, and I've fought the hardest teams through all the nerfs and I've been doing very well for myself. I hope anybody that read this learned a thing or two about boombox! thanks again for the video, much love!! :3 - Sharpel
TYSM SHARPEL! I'm gonna take a deep dive in this to definitely to see how my opinions change, but I'm very happy for your transparency and overall rundown that I was hoping to get out of this video, I'm glad that you're also bringing up good points that definitely make me soften more to his very wonky state as a whole. I wasn't expecting as much as you typed but again I will be forever thankful that you watched the video, didn't go to bashing on it from minute one, and provided very good feedback to me and educated myself and some others in the long run. I'm happy that someone with more experience in the competitive scene with the class is able to put their two cents in the mix to better reflect on all of the balances, the video's argument, and the perspective of one who has pushed the limits with the class in their current position. I heavily respect you and the other boombox mains that have come forth to give their feelings on the video and the class now as a whole including some knowledge I didn't really take into account when making or editing the video. I do understand that I did overlook certain aspects of certain abilities, and I will take fault for that since I was tired on some scenes, and was working with only a handful of knowledge and testing. I hope that his rework fixes the much to be desired outcomes for new players, so that this class isn't as difficult as it is to learn. I'm glad that you and the others were able to get an enjoyable experience in the end, as this is my first documentary that I've made for myself without being ledged by a contract and having the freedom to express myself for a good while. Sure it isn't perfect, but I'm still happy with the result of the video nonetheless, even if it was sloppily edited and put together in my eyes. I may come off as aggressive, but I promise you, I do not act like how I do in the video at all. Matter of fact, I'm very open to more insight if you ever want to share more so I can get a better scope of the picture for future thoughts or opinions on the class. Again, I cannot express how thankful I am to you and the others for the critique and watching the video. ♫ - Medley
I'll send this to medley :3 I do wanna put my own thoughts quickly though! He definitely can be a good pick in comps and casuals, however he's overshadowed a lot by the other supports. Against all the ranges except sling, he dominates against as his shield helps a ton against them. I just feel against certain skills/abilities other classes have, that probably should be able to block it or maybe just reduce damage against? He definitely has the pushback power if used correctly but It isn't good enough most of the time I feel. The knockback he gives is good in some cases and he may be able to escape, however I think most classes have a ability that can catch right back up to him easily lol. That's pretty much all I got to say. Byeeee!!
@@Leon-by2dd i completely agree with u honestly lol! the point i was trying to make regarding your final point is that you can cancel out their movement ability using knockback, but it still has its flaws for sure so yes he does struggle in that area too. thanks for sending it and giving ur thoughts!!
Honestly everything said in my video was the tip of the iceberg. Back in the baby stages of comp phighting boombox was a must-pick. Hell, at some point the CRC mods almost considered banning him altogether. Patches passed and I wasn't surprised at first, but then they added more.... and then more... now he's the most inconsistent support in the game.
Yep, I’m honestly glad you did make your video when you did, it honestly rung a bell in my head that this wasn’t even talked about much despite people feeling mixed on his current state. It’s kind of sad too cause I struggled finding even scraps of people doing so, but now this video is out, sure it’s far from perfect, but I hope it gets people talking.
Boombox main here‼️ He’s been my main ever since I started playing the game in 2023, it’s so sad to see how “unplayable” he’s become (by that I mean he’s not as fun as he used to be) BUT I’d still pick him over any of the other phighters ^_^ He was the main reason I got into Phighting after all
@@josa77 I don’t understand why some people would flat out wish this against you :(. I don’t think how or what you choose in the game should change someone’s view on you just because you want a different experience that some may not approve of, I still respect Boombox players like you that still persevere, and I think it’s admirable that you still stick with even at his lowest. Thank you for expressing how you feel though, and I’m interested in everyone’s story that mains BB :)
Holy shit im so glad people are talking abt boombox more, played him when rave vs relax was a thing and it’s so sad seeing the class fall off so bad that i had to quit using him entirely since 15-19 kill avg games would turn into 6 kill avg games. Great video btw 🙏
boombox main here and I cry eternally everytime i see the patch changes. the sad thing is, i mained boombox since he was comfortable to play with. he was useful and had a unique gimmick that actually made me have a lot of fun in the game. it was especially fun playing with a biograft since the shield given to him would benefit him a lot. but because of all the nerfs the devs gave him its difficult to get even a single game without feeling like you arent doing anything. the nerf with his phinisher was especially prominent to his inconsistency since not only can phighters get out of his small range, the panic button would only last for 3 seconds and just disappear. this video highlights a lot of his issues and how inconsistent boombox is now. he isnt just unviable but hes now difficult to play
I agree, his skill ceiling is way too unrealistic to really match now, he's been gutted and we just have to sit here accepting that. Thank you for your transparency and kind words! :)
I saw this video in my recommended when it dropped, and I added it to watch later. Mostly because I knew it would be a banger and someone finally saying what I've been preaching as a retired Boombox main. But now having finished it, at some parts even getting emotional I realized that I actually wanted to repress the feelings a bit. It's crazy because it's genuinely like grief, and I'm not even a veteran player, I started early December last year. My start with the game was rocky (as is for most newgens) but Boombox was a character I slowly started acquring a taste for, and once I understood his kit and got a bit of game sense, played ALL the time. Every single hour and match, then got the Eggsquerade skin and it basically became part od my brand, my pngtuber in scrims still has that eggbox aesthetic to her I can't let go of. He carried me in my first ever phestival, my first ever scrim, reaching lvl 100, first ever pro server encounter. I gen felt so tight knit with the character, and I always liked the metronome mechanic. Personally I never saw it as a rhythm game, despite being a rhythm game player aswell and maybe that's why I never felt it was off beat. To me metronome was its own beat, a heart beat if you will, something you gotta keep track of methodically, something that became so deeply ingrained in my muscle memory and soul that it was second nature. Then the nerfs came and I found myself playing Eggbox less and less, then actually loathing having to go on Boombox in scrims. From one of my prides and joys to the neglected once gifted child. I found myself maining Scythe, for her complexity, high damage output and most importantly SPEED, MOBILITY AND TECHS!!! Everything that was taken away from Boombox basically. And the fact didn't hit me until now. I really do feel like I repressed a mountain of grief until this video GOD, IDC that I'm cringe bro it's like you were reading from a script from my soul. Nowdays I still call myself a Eggbox main but it's moreso for the brand, and now with the upcoming rework, I have never been more worried for his state. Good shit bro, good shit.
I'm sorry about what grief this video triggered, even if it was bringing something to light or even if it was good in anyway to you, I tend to feel guilty really easily over things like this. The fact that you have managed to dedicate as much time, sweat, and tears really into Boombox even like some others that I've talked to (Sharpel Mainly), more so even to pushing the time that I've spent on Rocket really is inspiring to me. The same reactions that you have are kind of similar, but not on the same level as this, is what I experienced when Rocket initially got his nerf waves, hell I still rock a lot of Buster Rocket stuff and he's just become a part of me that I can't really forget, sure his nerfs weren't as bad, but it pretty much knocked him out of any viability, to where it was questioned "Why pick Rocket when you could pick characters like Slingshot, Hyperlaser, or Scythe?", though recently he has gotten some buffs, I still feel indifferent about that time, sure I still aspire to push him to be at his best and try prove some people wrong, I have since then just went to learning other classes, becoming a Support and Ranged Flex while closing in on Melees. Which is how I even got to questioning the creation of this video to begin with, when Boombox became the last support I had to really pick up to some proficiency, I originally didn't believe my initial thoughts especially after the nerfs, but after pushing some time into him it became apparent that there was absolutely NOTHING on this aside from some videos, hell I struggled with the introduction scene because there was almost no claims on the situation in a negative light, despite me hearing so much about it. It shocks me that people even supported his current state to begin with, sure my perspectives on some mechanics of his are indifferent to some people, but to get used to some of these flaws and having to spend more time than not to learn the class or mend him into a situational gear to power a hectic system feels kind of odd to me now, especially with how easy the other classes are to learn now a days. I have gotten used to the metronome as of recent and I see you what you mean by it being a heart beat, sure while I was heavily confused at that time, I still question it's metronome sometimes but that's just me being a nerdy musician lol. I have tried pushing Boombox a little more in proficiency and some of my thoughts have changed, but the buffs are moreso a temporary bandage that will have to suffice until his hopeful rework. I wouldn't say this comment is cringy at all, I love seeing comments like this because they highlight how the video is and shows me the perspectives of many others, I genuinely appreciate the kindness and transparency as it only helps me develop a more mended stance on situations like this. Sorry if this is long or seems as if I'm saying to much, but I was genuinely really interested in this comment, so don't feel ashamed or anything about it, I mean it. I wish you the best with your future endeavors and work, and if you do want to continue this conversation don't feel afraid to contact me ( I don't bite ). ♫ - Medley
for people that didnt exist two years ago and didnt know how he was like before his full rework, lemme sum it down passive: same charges (but werent visible), but no metronome, you just had to hit people to get charges (note he didnt get any haste either) (also his ability overview used to say he had no passive) also pretty sure allies had faster shield regen while near you M1: did a circle around him similar to his m2, also didnt deal extra damage depending on the amount of charges you had M2: healed health before shield, and healed a lot more even after it was turned into shield, also no haste Q: fired a shockwave that was meant to knock people back but just ended up doing an unreasonable amount of damage (i think it reached the 100s sometimes) so it was turned into what we have today and has yet to be revamped E: Created a bubble shield where he stands that covers literally everywhere in a radius, also bounced back rocket's projectiles ig. After that and before what we have now, he used to have a similar shield to what he has now, but it covered him 360 rather than in front of him Ult: same start up, but instead of immediate effects when lands, he created a CD on the ground that passively regens shield for allies like vine's ult (also it was really bright) after it was turned into something immediate, he used to give 150 shield, not overshield, flat shield, also no haste too ig Honorable mention: His badge used to just require you to stay in the air slightly longer than usual when ulting, he could easily get it by ulting off the crossroads tower or off the top of doomspire (was just a free badge)
also note that the "ttk" issue isn't fixable from just increasing the damage, old phighting was a completely different game for the most part due to every phighter having a stronger kit to suit the fast paced-ness that was old phighting (not rocket though, his rockets used to be slower, no rocket jumping, and his e fired 3 easily dodgable homing rockets)
I honestly wish he has MORE rhythm like changes, me and my friend always brought up the idea of his metronome being actually timed to the song CURRENTLY PLAYING. I hate that I have to mute this games amazing music in order to even play him decently (I have a sense of rhythm, it just gets so overwhelmed because of the on going gameplay in addition to it). I also might’ve realized that taking damage slows down your metronome??? It could be lag but it’s VERY annoying. Really hoping that when he gets reworked, he gets more rhythm like elements and it functions PROPERLY.
I'm in the same boat, I never even noticed the damage case so I might look into that, I'm praying his rework goes well. Thank you for being transparent! :)
@@NotedMedleythanks, I’ve been playing Phighting off and on since red and blue and after not playing since roses and violets I’ve noticed a ton of changes between the characters(I only recently fully came back to the game a month ago and I’m still playing it a lot now, really sad I’ve been inactive regarding this game since it’s really fun.) but I remember loving bb and now it’s awful to see him in this abmismal state.
Amazing video, I've been a boombox main since violet vs roses and seeing him fall off from being a good phighter HURT. Literally his nerfs were so bad, I had to change mains in order to have good plays again. It's nice to see more people talking about this !! 🙏
It was a topic that me and many others were confused as to why it wasn't being talked about on much vids. I lacked the confidence in releasing this at first, but as soon as Apha made his claim with Boom, I knew I had to work on this ASAP. Thank you for the kind words and support, I only hope to make content like this more often! :)
@@NotedMedley Np dude !! I'm really hoping the phighting devs listen to the criticism being shared here and tinker bbs rework into bringing him back into the competitive spotlight. i miss playing him sm :']
Boombox feels like a combination of all of Boggio’s worst traits when it comes to balancing. Useless feeling passives, m1s feeling not very useful and long wind ups for underwhelming phinishers.
At first before all the nerfs he got, my main complaint about him was that he barely supported aside from his Ult and mostly supported himself and did a lot of damage for a support. Now he doesn’t support AND doesn’t damage making him SUCK, I just hope hes going to be mostly focused on support in his rework.
I mean his M2 helps and I give it a lot less credit than I should have but his shield still leaves a lot to be desired as a whole, he can be helpful but it takes a while to understand when you backline and tag team for charge to even help the team to begin with, his self sustain compared to other supports is horrendous, but the rework is hopefully going to fix up these issues and so far it’s looking that way!
@ wait no I meant like how I view your opinion of bb being bad Back then, I struggled with the rhythm game while not knowing why, and once you brought up the metronome, I finally understood. If they fix just the audio itself I might be absolutely balling with this class rn.
I lost a 26 win streak in opens, and naturally I got upset about it, saying "I guess we just dont need a frontline then huh" I got told that Boombox is a frontliner, and so is scythe the demons that I had to fight to not just outright call this guy a complete idiot...
As someone who mains Boombox, and also has him as a favourite character. I agree with a lot of stuff in this video sadly, we shall hope there will be a miracle to save BB. Adding useless info alongside that, I’ve scrolled and watched a couple of more videos ranting or talking about how much they nerfed him, no pressure or offence on the devs or anything, but I just hope that they take this criticism into consideration and make his rework actually a good one.
very well made video imo, boombox was the first character i learned as my friend (you may know him as howdoyoubreath) first showed me the game, and i enjoy rhythem games and he even looked a bit like my minecraft and roblox skins. eventually he became my secondary after i realized scythe was a thing but i still mess around with him on the hq because i think voiding people is REALLY funny. but yeah ive always thought him to be pretty weak compared to the rest. i had a couple of ideas to rework him without completly overhauling current mechanics. one would be to increase his knock back especially on heavy phighters to make him have a bit of a niche use to voiding people on hq sfoth or even shoving them into the bread factory press or something like that. another idea i had was reworking his m2 to have a reduced cooldown and only use 1 charge, meaning you could still somewhat support your team while still phighting on. also to help with movement and escapes i think that disabling the e shield should knock yourself back as well sorta like scythes shotgun recoil. finally, i think it would be cool if bassdrop scaled damage with how high you drop from, which could help with increase damage output. as a totally professional and definitely skilled phighter ill explain sorta how i try to play him in his current state. one thing is to try and never pick a 1 on 1 fight, but to aid other phighters in thier 1 on 1s. i find this particularly effective on the iron cafe when theres just so much chaos and i can chip opposing phighters as they phight my other teammates. generally i would get to 3 or 4 charges and if i wasnt picking a phight i would find a group of teammates to use it on, and then do the whole chip from behind thing again to charge up. another thing is since almost every attack can push opposing phighters in some way its a good idea to try to cheese one in the void if you have a chance, mainly by using the shield and m2. this doesnt work too often for me, but when it does its really funny. finally, as another comment said, hes generally way stronger in conquer than anything else as the team is generally more grouped together and it especially is useful for the phinisher. a side note on that, i generally try to aim to hit an opponent than a teammate with it as it will do damage and my teammate would likely get caught in it either way. also its probably one of the few where the "my phinisher is ready" alert actually matters. i really like boombox and i really dont wanna see it suffer this kind of fate, as i feel like hes one of the more unique phighters to play. i always liked the idea of the metronome (even if it is a bit frustrating) as it made it feel different and unique from other phighters attacks where you normally just hold or spam. his playstyle is just really unique and i really hope that it does get to be competitivly viable again at some point. for now to me its just a fun challenge to play as the arguably weakest phighter on the roster. hope you enjoyed my wall of text as much as i enjoyed this vid also huge missed opportunity, when you finished the intro you should have said "lets lay down the beat" before getting into the passive
What a great video! As a Boombox main I really enjoyed your thoughts on Boombox gameplay and honestly I can agree with almost everything you said. I joined Phighting about 15 months ago. I remember my friends telling me about this game, I immediately checked the wiki and was drawn to Boombox: I like his design, his AoE damage and his support abilities (I really like playing supports in games, yeah). My interest in him only grew when friends started telling me about his difficulty! I've been playing Boombox all this time and have become pretty good at him, he used to be able to hold his own in some 1v2 fights thanks to his self-support and slightly aggressive playstyle. He was SO FUN back then! However, with each nerf he has become more and more difficult and unbearable to play. Some of the balance changes like M2 range reduction, M1 haste decrease, Phinisher nerf and E HP nerf felt COMPLETELY unjustified. Honestly, Boombox lost all viability with Coil release. He's literally a hybrid support too and does a lot of things better than the green DJ. While Boombox is still my main and I love him, but I often play Medkit if I want to support my team or Skateboard (who I think is a bit weak in the current situation too, by the way) if I want fun gameplay. Boombox can't provide either of those things today, sadly. I really hope his rework makes him a good and fun Phighter again. I'm just worried that Boombox might completely change his playstyle for the worse after the rework. Although... It's hard to imagine anything worse. Once again, I want to say thank you for this masterpiece! The atmosphere of the video is just amazing, I had goosebumps while watching some moments! Good luck with creativity!
You have no idea how happy I am that this video has gotten relatively many views so quickly! The issue of the Boombox's nerfs really needed to be raised and your execution in the form of quality editing and scripting is excellent and outstanding!
honestly I never paid attention to the metronome of boombox, I just focus of the funny boxes at the cursor... but yeah it's a valid point for the dev to fix
THANK YOU, i always encounter a boombox (i've switched over to shuri) I lament to them about the current state of him, and every time the boombox in questions DEFENDS his current state and I cry
It still makes me confused as to why some people defend his current state when it's obvious that he's nowhere near the viability that the other supports have now really. I appreciate the support and thank you for the transparency!
Maybe I'm just still too new to the game, but doesn't Shuri want to avoid BB? Pretty much all the Shuri guides i've watch have said to try and avoid trying to fight a BB. And I myself am not sure how to engage a BB as Shuri, even though I consider Shuri my main.
Some mistakes i wanna point out Both sword M2s have it in the move description that they PIERCE shields, also hypers m2 is named "piercing ray" for a reason also subs M2 doesnt register as a projectile either its just a timer that shows you when it procs the star. Vine staffs haste only works for her not all teammates. On the other note The fall from grace was deserved he was overtunned, now he is underperforming due to them but he is still playable, there is probably not gonna be any changes till the rework tho so happy waiting. Also pick a readable font for the chapters next time i had to squint my eyes to read it thanks
i HAAAATED boom pre rework cause he was just really damn good and annoying to face; i was happy when he got nerfed but then his nerfs just kept coming and coming and coming. i feel like his kit fundamentally was doomed before he even was released and generally just feels clunky to play with and as; i cannot wait for that rework 😭
as a boombox main who is moderately okay at him- trying to play him in pros is so embarrassing because everyone knows how absolutely dog shit he is and I don’t get any value out of playing him and not even that much in opens. Its so sad especially to me since I think for myself boombox is the most fun character in the game for me but consistently getting 2/3/7 games makes me pretty frustrated
I feel your pain, I wish they didn't tamper with him as much as they did, but here we are, his history in viability is just bittersweet at this point. Thank you for being transparent! :)
So when I play boombox I count his beats and he’s actual on 3/4 time, and sometimes it’s 3/4 & time. How amazing there’s a half beat in gameplay which is a shorter time and harder to hit. I’m so glad someone (at least from what I’ve seen) is actually addressing this. I used to see a lot of boombox mains and I tried him when he was still in his gold days but playing him now it really pisses me off. It’s fun when i have vc and I can play low quality music but playing the actual game as him is super annoying and there’s just better characters out there.
He’s very difficult to squeeze value out of, especially with the nerfs, now that there are buffs, which is a win for the guy as a whole. The metronome always confused me the more I played boombox so now it’s just muscle memory and tuning out the metronome if I do ever rarely play boombox just to joke around.
25:12 one thing i'd actually put slingshot in the hard counter (up from winnable so its a massive jump) category mostly because of flying tech ! i've been playing slingshot since i started playing the game (level 300 as of current) The reason why slingshot is actually a hard counter to boombox is because of how much height his E, jump, and hover give him. To put it perspective, Slingshot can E upwards (no movement keys just looking up and pressing e) which already gives you LOS over the shield, from there slingshot can pressure you with absolute ease and without any form of punishment on the receiving boomboxes end. this paired with the ideal slingshot combo [ m2 - 30 damage Q, (all shots hit) - 40 damage, triple volley hover m1s - 60 damage ] = is a staggering 130 damage and even without the ideal Q you would still hit (being a little generous towards boombox) an 18 minimum with Q, which would bring it down to 108 still absolutely detrimental to the healthpool of boombox. not to mention m1 sniping boomboxes mid ult to shutdown, ontop of that the piercing m2s aswell as being THREE SHOT to slingshot phinisher. slingshot is the reason i think boombox should be able to aim his attacks aswell as m1 in the air because they're seriously just makeshift melee hits and scythe gets to do it so why cant he :sob: TL;DR, slingshot fly above shield, boombox sad cuz no damage, slingshot keel boombox (im sorry if the paragraph is convoluted)
I completely understand what you’re at, I’ve always never struggled with Slings but my mentality can change and I see what you’re saying being valid points that I should’ve brought up in the video. I’ll take this into consideration for the future if I do ever make a post video on my current thoughts, likely once the rework is out and I’ve gotten used to it. Don’t worry about your paragraph, I thought it was understandable and that’s all that matters to me! Thank you for being transparent and understanding nonetheless! :)
As a newgen player, boombox was the first character i learned, i honestly never felt most of these changes since i only begun playing start of this year, one change i did feel tho is the q cooldown as i rlly like to pair it with m2 for a combo, and the extra 2 seconds just trew it all. Also in my opinion his shielding might as well not exist in some cases
That’s fair, it’s just general adaptation, the shielding tends to be one of the main things I’m bitter about since some stuff now with some knowledge makes sense, but there’s still those certain instances like Sling’s M2 where it shouldn’t go through at all and has nothing to back it up lol. Thank you for telling your experiences with the game, I honestly hope your experience with the game gets more enjoyable the more you improve! :)
I remember when i played boombox around December last year and man i was getting mvp over and due to the fact i played aggressive and now i can't even do that due to its shield being way low. Its sad to see the most chill dude in Phighting to be bad...
As an almost level 300 support I strongly agree with u about the problems he has to face, especially his ineffective play style. His play style is all about taking risk, actively getting there and deal damage and provide utility. Forcing yourself onto the enemy is a great way of pressure , however boom isn’t too good at that, to make it worse you provide if you don’t take your risks and get your jazz ahh music to start beating their ass, basically like what you said, if you failed to do some damage you won’t get the shield and get punished .Unlike his other support homies, which their play styles is all about staying in the back and providing utility and damage, boom is a difficult support to use and taking risks is a big part of his play style which is both ok but flawed. His two main ways of supporting are just outclassed or doesn’t have the power to provide any impacts. Sure the speed is great and is amazing for tanks to catch up with their targets, coil absolutely outshines him as he consistently and constantly keeps providing speed. Boom’s shields is also a good “sustainable” source but isn’t as impactful on the majority of the round, mainly that his shield depletes too quickly to really impact any of the player’s survivability.
Thank you for being transparent and giving your general thoughts on his current state, I hope you were able to enjoy the video despite it being a little more on the sloppily put together end! :)
Glad they realised their faults and buffed him after this cause it’s so stupid. Getting mad at boomboxes for being too aggressive, and then leaving them in a state where they can basically do nothing then add a class who supports while being able to play aggressive is so stupid, just leaving Boombox in the dust. The amount of favouritism Coil gets is so annoying cause of how they get stuff no one else does. Scythe has to wait about 6 months for a skin while Coil gets one in about a week and basically takes over Boomboxes previous role.
Even if it is just these buffs, I’m at least glad there’s an effort at the end of the day. Coil has been a problem for the game, but honestly as of right now, Rocket has been growing as a new problem child especially with his ult buff, which is saddening to me as a former Rocket one trick.
Boombox is my favorite character in the game. I like his in lore character and I like the idea of his kit. Keyword: idea. It’s just not done well. I hope in the future rework he becomes more of a full on shield support because it’s kind of laughable that one of the “sustain” classes has the worst sustainability in the game. Even ranged and melee classes on their Own have more sustainability when they just get a single kill it’s kind of insane. Genuinely worst character and I’m so sad about it because I love his little :] face. Why can’t silly guys ever win
As a boombox main who recently decided to switch to Slingshot for a while, the nerfs were CRITICAL I hope the kit gets better.. peak video with peak script vroski !
having been seen as one of the "top bb mains" for an incredibly long time i couldnt keep up anymore, it was so depressing and hard to deal with how much hes been gutted and yet i would be told its "my fault" for not being able to adapt to him. the comp scene has serious issues with balancing i think. i'm glad someones finally making a good statement about how ass he is, it finally feels like what i had been saying all that time has been seen.
Hello! I just wanted to pop in here, cause your video to me is oh-so interesting! I had to write a comment detailing my thoughts on the whole thing. For perspective, I’m a retired BB main who is now a full-time pro Scythe main. I enjoyed his mechanics before, but since leaving him, I had no idea what his state in the game still was since then. In fact, despite my many matches in Phighting with Scythe, BB is a rare sighting for me to find, with pro/competitive BBs in open servers even rarer to come across to the point I could maybe even classify them as endangered lol. Comparing his inconsistent and seldom supportive shielding power to the more consistent supportive healers also hinted at his niche and ineffective supportive nature to me in hindsight. Overall however, your video opened my eyes to the deep rooted issues of BB that were neglected and perhaps worsened by balancing patches. (One last thing I’ll say before moving onto my main points is that man, they got rid of Q Surfing? That’s sad lol. I loved making use of that tech haha. Oh well tvt) Ok… for one, 30 minutes?? I saw the title and the thumbnail, and I was shocked to see this topic had reached a runtime of about half an hour! I would say watching it, I was immersed enough in your argument to the point those 30 minutes didn’t seem that long actually. The primary thing I wanted to bring to your attention however is the way you chose to design the vibe of the video overall, the tone of your voice, etc. Certain sections regarding the direction you took for your freedom of expression in this video - primarily your seeming anger and frustration, which present in your tone and the way you wrote certain parts of the script with it - while it may be compelling to some, I feel it may actually detract a lot from your argument as a whole. I don’t mean to be offensive or anything, but personally, I don’t like listening to video essays or drama videos which talk about an issue which give their two cents about the issue in such a provoking and aggressive manner. Past any preference of mine, this aggressive tone (whether harmlessly added in, or genuinely conceived) can genuinely expose bias to your argument, where what you debate in that argument can become blinded by your emotions. With this, you ignored the possible counterarguments that may exist against yours, which when unaddressed might make your argument look flimsy. Additionally, some of the points and claims you made may actually be infactual. For one, saying BB doesn’t have any escape options is pretty much wrong. Even if you ignore haste from a good chunk of his abilities, Q can still be considered a vertical escape option at the very least. You also go out of your way to say that BB’s ult is, to you, the worst ult in the game! I believe that claim may be a bit misguided too, which happens to be in context to another Phighting YT video which I had recently watched that ranking Phighter phinishers (where it considered rocket’s ult the worst due to its inconsistency and low damage which I totally agreed with, which funnily enough has also been revealed to be on its way towards a rework by Boggio right after that fact LMFAO). Another thing that stood out to me in this department is how you include Scythe’s M1 as something that can go through his forcefield. While it _technically_ is considered a projectile, it acts more like a melee M1 overall, in which case, all melee M1’s already go through the shield! So yea, I thought it was pretty weird for you to consider that move there lol. If anything, as a Scythe main, I would have been boggled if my M1 was invalidated by that forcefield, since it’s one of my only main sources of damage against him while the shield is up, and would admittedly be hella frustrating to play against haha. Despite this however, the message and points you tried to share overall were solid and valid enough for me to watch through the video with no real major issues whatsoever. You constructed an engaging narrative that I was really able to stick with for a long time, and I applaud your ability to create such an effect. I’m also happy you didn’t stick to a provoking tone the entire video, providing me some assurance that this argument was most likely coming from a place of genuine care and not just careless frustration. Overall for next time, if you want to make use of an aggressive tone, I feel you should utilize it with more disparity and discernment in mind, as to reinforce it and give it a stronger impact, turning an idea that sounds provoking at first into something that becomes strongly provocative and meaningful. Furthermore, about your comment on how this video wasn’t put together, thought out and edited the best, I have my own thoughts on how you could have portrayed a narrative on this issue better, however this is just my personal creative side speaking. I would have probably gone for a style which speaks of an inbetween state - purgatory if you will. I feel like a lot of the frustrated tone ignores the soon-to-come rework for him, acting as if salvation is never coming for this Phighter, even after mentioning said rework in the beginning and end of the video twice or thrice lol. Perhaps emphasizing a transition point of BB’s current state, from the abysmal state he’s in now, to the eventual rework he will receive in due time, to me seems like a more sensible direction to take. You could have instead imbued your argument with a sense of an outdated and tired essence, BB a worn out and faded color among the newer flashy standout ones, his tools outclassed by and against everyone else, the nerfs that takes away his sense of being piece by piece, a feeling of limbo that permeates and engulfs his whole character. You could have also incorporated aspects of grief into that sense of limbo - Majora’s Mask style if yfm - where the five stages of grief, and feelings like anger which stem from that grief can properly make its debut. In the end, the direction would simulate a kind of narrative that acts like a captured frame frozen in time, of an era for BB which in the beginning criticizes his current state in the present, while being able to transform contextually into a documentation of an interesting period in BB’s life, and the history of Phighter balancing as a whole in the future. My final comment on this is how your argument, ignoring any emotional bias, seems to be strongly one-sided in its approach on paper. I read the comment made by Sharpel, who apparently claimed to be the #1-2 Boombox player in the world, which is a pretty insane title to have lol. Their counterarguments to the points you made in your video is a really nice second take on the state of BB, and the response in tandem with the video itself honestly sounded like a sort of debate between you two, funnily enough TvT. This made me realize however how your video could have benefited from a more honest review of BB, where it not only disses his flaws but gives credit where credit is due and can be found. It’s not bad to take a side in some cases however, especially if you believe in it and even more if you’ve done proper research on it, but what’s very important (and honestly something I learned from my history teacher lmao), is that when it comes to answering “to what extent” you think an object of interest lies, it’s incredibly difficult, and often ingenuine or incorrect to argue 100% on either side of the argument. This is why you don’t have to, where it may help you more to weigh the argument more fairly, yielding on some aspects and acting humbly, remaining grounded and taking a good look at the full picture, and which you could consult others on the topic more before publicizing your opinions as big as this. Of course, I’m not blaming you for anything serious. I believe what mattered even more to me is what your video was able to achieve in the end. I love how this video, as you hoped it would be able to do, sparked conversation on the neglected Phighter among the player base, and got people in the community to talk more about him as a result. At the very least, you got my attention and you got me talking too :> 👍. You also seemed humble towards criticism in the comments after all, and I hope the comments and advice you receive like mine could help you improve on what you plan to do in the future! I’m actually interested to see what things you plan to make in the future for your UA-cam channel or anywhere else, with your first video being made surprisingly well for a first, despite the flaws I had pointed out here that could hopefully help you improve. Love your stuff man, hope to see more awesome stuff from you! :] 🤍 - Jamji+*
TYSM! I do agree there are numerous flaws within the video regarding emotional over literal and causes the arguement to be fragile in some areas, more often than none, and that’s to come with not having done this for myself in a while. I’m very happy that you brought some good critique into light and I plan on taking this into account for future content that I have in general. I want to try my best to nurture this channel as much as I can, even though writing scripts, editing, and much more all take long and I’m still in High School so I have even less time. I’m very thankful for you being so open and honest on this, and I hope I don’t fail to disappoint with the future stuff I have planned. I’m very happy to have been able to finally get some traction on this topic again, despite this week-made half-baked video being very sloppy and has numerous flaws in my eyes, but hey that’s stuff that’ll be fixed at the end of the day. I’m just pleased to be hearing so many perspectives and thoughts that the people that have played boombox in the competitive scene have, it’s always fun reading and seeing their ways of thinking. Again, thank you for being super supportive, I hope to not fall off or something. ;) ♫ - Medley
@@NotedMedley Np man ^^ I also just want to point out - your channel description is funny to me when correlated with this videos nature lol TvT. Also its all g, im excited for whatever cool stuff u post in the future, and hopefully will intrigue and hook me as much as this one does. I wish you best of luck on your ventures :>
FINALLY everyone's talking about boomboxes horrible HORRIBLE NERFS 💔 my poor man boombox who barely gets any lore now gets barely any playability,, his state as a support right now is just REALLY terrible and he feels like more of a burden to any team he's in that has no healers :[ may they buff my poor, silly little boy boombox.. 😔
i started playing back in mid-february (of 2024) as a boombox onetrick and i was SO MAD when all the nerfs made him nigh unplayable i started playing other phighters and now i usually go for biograft and vine staff, but i still consider boombox one of my mains and the character i'm second best with i hope the rework advances him back to being on par with everyone else more liveblogging below vvv
1 week late but honestly this video points out all my issues with Boombox that I can't put into words. He's just weak and you can barely win against any enemies (especially Melee). I saw the nerfs and went into an absolute state of SHOCK and horror as I saw him being gutted within the patches channel. I am so glad the overhaul/remake is coming soon because I cannot handle seeing Boombox at this state any longer.
I agree with so many points in this video as a boombox main, like it’s actually so sad that this is happening to him like they just nerfed him to hell at this point and I hate the fact it happened to him. I still play as him right now and I can still get decent games in as him but it just doesn’t seem good enough for me, HELL even all the other supports are better that him. The 15% haste just seems like nothing to us or even anyone at this point sadly and it just annoys me every time I see it. All I got to say is, I hope this rework comes soon because boombox is just pitiful at this point.
I’m with you man, hopefully this rework will be good. I appreciate you being open and understanding! I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors in your boombox adventure :)
As a solo boombox main, playing him in recent times has been extremely difficult, I feel useless as a frontline support as my R2 and ult do almost little to nothing, and I get shredded in a matter of seconds the moment I approach a point, let alone a banhammer. But I'm looking forward to the rework!
It does hurt going in frontline, and the nerfs only ever really put Boombox in the position to being a backline support that occasionally has to rush with a tank or dps ally to get charge in a safer manner and then go back to trying to tag team as much as possible, it’s just awkward compared to the other supports. The rework looks promising and I’m excited for what they have in store
At this point, they should just add a new Shield Support Phighter to replace Boombox, INSTEAD OF MAKING BOOMBOX WORSE AND WORSE EVERY PATCH. Like seriously, this is one of the reason why I hated Coil's reveal, since we needed a Shielder Support to replace Boombox ASAP, so Boombox can FINALLY get his brand new Abilities. Now that Coil is released, we're gonna have to wait for them to release the new Melee and Ranged Phighter, BEFORE the Shielder Support we needed. (I am so sorry for ranting and having a tantrum, ty for reading tho)
@@NoobletTheUnskilled don’t worry, your rant wasn’t as bad as mine when I played into the script, I completely understand your views as a whole and I thank you for being open. :)
That’s fair, thank you for making the video when you did cause my god finding a lot of stuff on just people questioning boombox as a whole or even describing the kits problems was difficult even on discord. I wanted to make this video enjoyable, sure I did make a few mistakes, but I think it will get people to talk a lot more on this and reflect on it. I’ll take your thoughts into consideration for future thoughts and thank you for the support and transparency! :)
Frankly, outside of the audio issues of being too loud, my biggest issue was your complaint on shield penetration. Outside of subspace and coil, all the others feel perfectly in-line with how general balnce in games work. Slingshot's m2 looks like a clear example of a charged shot, which in most games, charged shots default to penetration to showcase strength. The exact same applies to Hyperlaser. And sword doesnt make any sense, but it only damages players which gives it a little leeway.
thank you for making this video cause you're so real for this 🙏🙏🙏 boombox rework please clutch 😢😢😢😢😢 i havent played him in ages and whenever i do i do jack and shit
Sure the buffs they recently put out help, but it would be nice if the rework had the same level of aggression that some of the other supports do as well instead of just sitting in the backline almost all the time, I’m hoping this rework helps him out and it’s looking like that so far!
hope ur doing okay man, it got pretty emotional in the beginning there. as a skate main, I havent played too much of boombox, esp after the nerfs, but honestly i feel for you. i remember when i was feeling so frustrated at skateboard onboard nerf and how hopeless it felt to me at the time. take a break if you need to, okay? in the end phighting is not that serious and shouldnt be taken as such, the game wont go anywhere if you need to just take a break and get a breather for a while. the game is about fun, not stressing yourself so much over skill level and classes, ect ect.
As an average Boombox main (since late 2022), I've had a lot of the same complaints. I feel like you get so little in return for how much effort you put in. Yes, it's a skill issue, but not everyone is a god given gift to phighting, the amount of skill you need to have in order to play him effectively is disheartening Boombox is fundamentally broken, he’s a frontline support but he doesn’t have the bulk or sustain that lets him fulfill his role. Boomboxes are incentivized to stay with their team. If you’re on the frontline, you become prone getting caught out by enemy melees (which you aren’t really equipped to fight), but if you’re on the backline you can’t get your charges (aka the thing you need in order to do your job). Other supports don’t have this problem, like (excluding Subspace) if an ally pings for healing but I don’t have charges? Tough luck buddy you’re on your own. If I do have charges? You better hope you don’t have the multi-support debuff or else all I can give is a measly 20 shield at full charges. I find most success playing Boombox like a flanker or pick character (bootleg Biograft if you will), but you’re not really helping your team (as a support) when you’re playing in that manner. The only time I get to have fun with him nowadays is during 25% haste bonus rounds where I can play super aggressively and pretend like it's the old days. Seriously though, you gotta try it at least once, 80% haste Boombox is so funny.
I’m a relatively new Phighting player(started in late October) but it’s sad to see what Boombox was vs what Boombox is now. I really like maining him but man is he extremely team dependent. I know he just got range buffs which…I’m gonna say, actually kinda annoyed me because they didn’t fix the issue with his shield output being ass, they fixed the least of his issues instead of his most prominent issue. I know it’s probably because of the rework but it’s like not even worth it when most of his kit still isn’t the best you know?
I’m just surprised they even made patches as a whole.. I do hope you enjoy the game as much as I have though, this game is a blast despite its balancing and QoL flaws. It’s a struggle at first but the result is so satisfying just climbing. So again, I hope you enjoy your stay and time with this game :)
I’ve been enjoying Phighting very much, even got into scrims, which is where I really saw the extent of bb’s flaws. I’ve actually had to learn Sword because my only other main is Subspace(but that’s my fault + usually I avoid annihilate like the plague) but I’ve still had fun learning Sword anyways. Hopefully, probably not, they might make another patch for bb since they have shown they can acknowledge his existence now
Yep, I’m happy that the game has been an enjoyable experience for you, I might end up making a video in concern to Rocket in the upcoming future so that is something to look forward to lol.
@@NotedMedley right the new rocket ult aka the kill the enemy tank button. I haven’t really played rocket so I’m not sure what the consensus is, but in scrims it’s actually the worst to go against
aw dang it someone beat me to the boombox ranting video- whatever its peak anyway! seriously though what did they do to boombox 😭 when i started the game i thought boombox would be fun to play because i love rhythm games and i used to play instruments so clearly timing only clicks instead of four keys to a metronome isnt that bad right? i was playing for a bit and i was wondering why i had to rely on the visual more than audio cue and kept mistiming by a little bit, but then i pulled out an autoclicker to click at the exact pace of the metronome and it was just slowly getting further off, i never knew it was actually a problem and i thought i was just messing something up
Sorry mate, I went through a week of just work work work, so I wanted to get this out. I understand your confusion at first, I thought it was a me problem at first, I slowly noticed the problem more and more. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought this! Thank you for the kind words! :)
25:03 i think you forgot to mention rocket has almost 2x as much a mobilty then boombox does tho it makes you take damage its so little its absurd you dont even need to jump above them you can literally just jump behind them
As a Rocket Main, this is something I should’ve made cause holy his mobility changes make him a menace and can make Rocket a lot more disturbing to fight as Boombox.
@@NotedMedley exactly the main problem with boombox is exactly this rather then focusing on 1-2 main parts bb focuses on 3 (shield aoe and speed) but its not good at any infact most of the time you only need 2 which is why boombox gets counterd by almost every class
I've been maining boombox for a few months and seeing him in this state is concerning vrah. when I found out abt his patches, It made me question abt the balance, they did boombox so dirty and bad at the same time. I'm trying to adapt to his current situation without dying
That’s my main job with this video, all there is to really hope for now is a good rework, I hope the boombox mains out there can enjoy him again in the far future!
i havent played phighting in ages, because ut gets repetitive and theres nothing new expect from new phighters each update, but looking at the boombox gameplay in the background, I can see what you mean, what have they fucking done to him BRO?!?!?!?!
While i do agree with his poor state right now, and i do think hes arguably the most inconsistent support phighter, hes still playable to me. Like, he was WAY better before, and im glad hes gonna get a rework ( despite the reason of his state right now was the absurd amount of nerfs and patches he gave to him), he can still be used pretty well... i do agree though hes one of the worst phighters in the game
The buffs did make him easier for those who were close to breaking that high skill wall to actually being able to break it, I’ve seen myself soften more to him because of the Ult and M2 range being increased to better help him survive. Sure he still has a relatively high skill floor now, but he is a little more accessible now before the rework. The rework does look promising and the M2 doing 25 damage with pull forces is 🥹. Thank you for taking time to being transparent on the video!
He’s very hard to get used to and is just very inaccessible to new players with low morale at the start, which we will just hope that this won’t be the case for the rework
It's frustrating. This character has so much potential, but with the metronome being off, and his whole kit getting countered by almost the whole roster, he's just not a viable pick. Knowing the metronome is offbeat, as a percussionist (while only for a year, I still had a constant metronome in my head) and a rhythm game enjoyer, it's one of the hardest things to hit knowing I have the constant beeping in my ear with no option of muting it and being able to focus on only the visual cues. It's either play with audio and have to deal with an offbeat metronome, or play with no audio at all, and playing with no audio is possibly one of the worst things to do (in my personal opinion.) Boombox as a support is very weak, and is seen as more of a throw pick. Why choose Boombox when other supports can output more support and overall impact on the game than Boombox can? Hopefully this Boombox rework that's in progress will actually make him a viable pick..
@@Philip69 the metronome has always been off time, anyone I've met that has played the character has always said it's off time. I guess it's fine for you, but majority of the playerbase says otherwise.
Valid points… however, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, Boombox m2 + Banhammer E. Quite literally the only time I play boombox is when there’s a ban on my team because you effectively get rid of 90% of ban’s weaknesses (slowness when doing anything, inability to deal with ranged classes). However then it brings up the question, why bother assisting your tank getting some more damage, when you can effectively double the damage output by going another tank. Overall my thoughts is that he’s pretty situational, but I personally enjoy playing the bodyguard kind of support role.
I do agree, the M2 while it has gotten a range buff, still leaves some to be desired because of how much you have to really work for it. I only ever really pray that there's either a Ban or Biograft at this rate when I run boombox now, it's the only way that I can actually feel as if I'm doing something for my team in the long run, when in the past he used to be able to take on fights with both of em and even help out other members. I do find him a little easier to play now with the buffs they gave him, but at this rate I'm happy with how far I pushed it and will probably just stick around until rework comes around, which then I'll probably hyper focus learning him again. Thank you for taking the time to write this comment!
"Heh... you should know lying won't get you far Iridiiusonice." (You look around horrified as my cool epic voice speaks from the shadows) "Don't you remember the glory days, the shield on cast, the move speed boost, the overshield... those were the days of boombio... now..." *Steps out of shadows all cool and u poop* "Now they are in ruin..." "W-what Hooskabanicnez??? How are you here?" "Heh.. I'm everywhere don't you know? And I'd be so much faster if they didn't nerf Boombox haste. They gutted him. They ruined our synergy and for what? To release some pathetic Hellhound thinking it was gonna replace what we had? Stupid mutt can't even restore shield." *You hold up gun all scared and stupid and lame* "I'm not here to fight, but if I was we both know how this would end. Boombio was the strongest synergy in the game, we ruled Crossroads with an iron fist. You and your stupid pro players had to complain, and its RUINED" *eyes flash red like sonic.exe* "I USED TO BE ABLE TO OVERDRIVE FOR ENTIRE ROUNDS, ONE BOOMBOX ULT DURING OVERTIME FINISHED THE GAME.... NOW.... NOW ITS ALL GONE AND ITS YOUR FAULT. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF!" 😡😡
Also another problem with the E ability ( I dont know if its just me) Sometimes when you do the shield pushback it just doesnt register at all, or just damages without pushback (it might be my lag but this mostly happens with either tanks or other fast melee)
Bro, in the Decoy deploy phrenzy, I did good with the other characters, like skate which people say is hard to use. But I absolutely hated boombox, he was so hard to use for me idk why but he was such an issue to use unlike the others. Now, when there’s a random phighters round I just pray not to get boombox 😭🙏
Boombox is similar to Splatoon 3’s Splattershot Nova, it’s a cool design and has potential but has the worst balancing and is easily outclassed/countered. I’m new to phighting but I’m dedicated to learning boombox even if it’s a horrible pick
Please know that I will take criticism in the comments and on my social medias, I will take your thoughts into consideration then make a final statement on where I feel Boombox is right now. Again I don't bite and who I am in the video does not reflect my personality overall. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy my first piece of content for this wonderful game : )
Edit: I did make a mistake at 19:43 IM SO SORRY (I hate davinci resolve so much)
Why are you so mad in this video 😭😭
@@lemondrop8203 just a character in my head when I was making the script, nothing more! Again, I’m not like this outside of my videos lol
@@NotedMedley I main rocket and like playing vinestaff (but I’m honestly pretty bad as I’m lvl 45), so I’m excited to see your video on rocket
Here's my rebuttals:
The metronome being "offbeat" isn't really much of a problem, as the timing is still consistent and becomes trivial once you get it down to muscle memory.
Ummmmmmm Uhhhhh lets just move On!!)
something important not mentioned in the video is bb's ability to stay on point for a long period of time is a WONDEROUS trait about boombox! good bb players will get top on the points leaderboard almost every game, cuz of his more passive yet still close quarters playstyle, and since he's such an annoying little rat to approach sometimes.
(some of which I'll get to soon)
I think E shield's health is totally fine. its not *supposed* to be an omega bullet-sponge, its supposed to be a tool to help your team engage, lasting long enough to get your team into the fight or as a way of defending yourself against a pesky range until you escape, and it does that very well!
(as i was writing this comment m2 and phinisher range got buffed LOL so that's nice too!)
Finally, the matchups!

I'll send this to medley :3
I do wanna put my own thoughts quickly though!
Byeeee!!
Ooooh, a legend wrote a legendary comment!
@@Leon-by2dd i completely agree with u honestly lol! the point i was trying to make regarding your final point is that you can cancel out their movement ability using knockback, but it still has its flaws for sure so yes he does struggle in that area too. thanks for sending it and giving ur thoughts!!
I would love to thank boombox for carrying my early days in phighting
Please come back home Boombox, we miss you 😭

the boombox situation is crazy...

Boombox main here‼️ He’s been my main ever since I started playing the game in 2023, it’s so sad to see how “unplayable” he’s become (by that I mean he’s not as fun as he used to be) BUT I’d still pick him over any of the other phighters ^_^ He was the main reason I got into Phighting after all
Completely fair, and honestly I respect you for sticking with what you love!

I non-ironically screamed when I heard an AZALI song at the beginning of this video

Pretty normal occurence
I wish you the best with your future endeavors and work, and if you do want to continue this conversation don't feel afraid to contact me ( I don't bite ).

for people that didnt exist two years ago and didnt know how he was like before his full rework, lemme sum it down
passive: same charges (but werent visible), but no metronome, you just had to hit people to get charges (note he didnt get any haste either) (also his ability overview used to say he had no passive) also pretty sure allies had faster shield regen while near you
M1: did a circle around him similar to his m2, also didnt deal extra damage depending on the amount of charges you had
M2: healed health before shield, and healed a lot more even after it was turned into shield, also no haste
Q: fired a shockwave that was meant to knock people back but just ended up doing an unreasonable amount of damage (i think it reached the 100s sometimes) so it was turned into what we have today and has yet to be revamped
E: Created a bubble shield where he stands that covers literally everywhere in a radius, also bounced back rocket's projectiles ig. After that and before what we have now, he used to have a similar shield to what he has now, but it covered him 360 rather than in front of him
Ult: same start up, but instead of immediate effects when lands, he created a CD on the ground that passively regens shield for allies like vine's ult (also it was really bright) after it was turned into something immediate, he used to give 150 shield, not overshield, flat shield, also no haste too ig
Honorable mention: His badge used to just require you to stay in the air slightly longer than usual when ulting, he could easily get it by ulting off the crossroads tower or off the top of doomspire (was just a free badge)
also note that the "ttk" issue isn't fixable from just increasing the damage, old phighting was a completely different game for the most part due to every phighter having a stronger kit to suit the fast paced-ness that was old phighting (not rocket though, his rockets used to be slower, no rocket jumping, and his e fired 3 easily dodgable homing rockets)
i used to main him bru

Thank you for this!

Hi
Yeah, I agree with this message 👍
Boombox feels like a combination of all of Boggio’s worst traits when it comes to balancing. Useless feeling passives, m1s feeling not very useful and long wind ups for underwhelming phinishers.
Sadly seems to be the case 😞
Scene 1: still somewhat disagrees
Scene 2: Immediately agrees
RIP boombox...
That’s kind of my bad sorry on formatting but it is what it is
@ wait no I meant like how I view your opinion of bb being bad

As someone who mains Boombox, and also has him as a favourite character. I agree with a lot of stuff in this video sadly, we shall hope there will be a miracle to save BB.
Adding useless info alongside that, I’ve scrolled and watched a couple of more videos ranting or talking about how much they nerfed him, no pressure or offence on the devs or anything, but I just hope that they take this criticism into consideration and make his rework actually a good one.
Hoping for his uprising 🙏

Wowzers how do I keep on finding you.
@ lol
No way
very well made video imo, boombox was the first character i learned as my friend (you may know him as howdoyoubreath) first showed me the game, and i enjoy rhythem games and he even looked a bit like my minecraft and roblox skins. eventually he became my secondary after i realized scythe was a thing but i still mess around with him on the hq because i think voiding people is REALLY funny. but yeah ive always thought him to be pretty weak compared to the rest.
i had a couple of ideas to rework him without completly overhauling current mechanics. one would be to increase his knock back especially on heavy phighters to make him have a bit of a niche use to voiding people on hq sfoth or even shoving them into the bread factory press or something like that. another idea i had was reworking his m2 to have a reduced cooldown and only use 1 charge, meaning you could still somewhat support your team while still phighting on. also to help with movement and escapes i think that disabling the e shield should knock yourself back as well sorta like scythes shotgun recoil. finally, i think it would be cool if bassdrop scaled damage with how high you drop from, which could help with increase damage output.
as a totally professional and definitely skilled phighter ill explain sorta how i try to play him in his current state. one thing is to try and never pick a 1 on 1 fight, but to aid other phighters in thier 1 on 1s. i find this particularly effective on the iron cafe when theres just so much chaos and i can chip opposing phighters as they phight my other teammates. generally i would get to 3 or 4 charges and if i wasnt picking a phight i would find a group of teammates to use it on, and then do the whole chip from behind thing again to charge up. another thing is since almost every attack can push opposing phighters in some way its a good idea to try to cheese one in the void if you have a chance, mainly by using the shield and m2. this doesnt work too often for me, but when it does its really funny. finally, as another comment said, hes generally way stronger in conquer than anything else as the team is generally more grouped together and it especially is useful for the phinisher. a side note on that, i generally try to aim to hit an opponent than a teammate with it as it will do damage and my teammate would likely get caught in it either way. also its probably one of the few where the "my phinisher is ready" alert actually matters.
i really like boombox and i really dont wanna see it suffer this kind of fate, as i feel like hes one of the more unique phighters to play. i always liked the idea of the metronome (even if it is a bit frustrating) as it made it feel different and unique from other phighters attacks where you normally just hold or spam. his playstyle is just really unique and i really hope that it does get to be competitivly viable again at some point. for now to me its just a fun challenge to play as the arguably weakest phighter on the roster.
hope you enjoyed my wall of text as much as i enjoyed this vid
also huge missed opportunity, when you finished the intro you should have said "lets lay down the beat" before getting into the passive
Lol, that would’ve been funny. Thank you for your perspective, I enjoyed your text walk don’t worry! :)
Thank you for your transparency and support!
Even then the rework pretty much removes it from the M1 from what I've seen, making him easier to really deal with.
And I myself am not sure how to engage a BB as Shuri, even though I consider Shuri my main.
ahh so this is what happened to the class that traumatized me back then
Yep 😁
Some mistakes i wanna point out Both sword M2s have it in the move description that they PIERCE shields, also hypers m2 is named "piercing ray" for a reason also subs M2 doesnt register as a projectile either its just a timer that shows you when it procs the star. Vine staffs haste only works for her not all teammates. On the other note The fall from grace was deserved he was overtunned, now he is underperforming due to them but he is still playable, there is probably not gonna be any changes till the rework tho so happy waiting. Also pick a readable font for the chapters next time i had to squint my eyes to read it thanks
@@SlugmasterKI4 will take into consideration for future thoughts, thank you for being transparent and understanding :)
i HAAAATED boom pre rework cause he was just really damn good and annoying to face; i was happy when he got nerfed but then his nerfs just kept coming and coming and coming.
i feel like his kit fundamentally was doomed before he even was released and generally just feels clunky to play with and as; i cannot wait for that rework 😭
Same here honestly… 😞
as a boombox main who is moderately okay at him- trying to play him in pros is so embarrassing because everyone knows how absolutely dog shit he is and I don’t get any value out of playing him and not even that much in opens.
Boombox: the king of mediocrity, never bad, always alright
He's at least gotten somewhat better.. Only time will tell as to how his future is
25:12 one thing i'd actually put slingshot in the hard counter (up from winnable so its a massive jump) category mostly because of flying tech ! i've been playing slingshot since i started playing the game (level 300 as of current)
The reason why slingshot is actually a hard counter to boombox is because of how much height his E, jump, and hover give him. To put it perspective, Slingshot can E upwards (no movement keys just looking up and pressing e) which already gives you LOS over the shield, from there slingshot can pressure you with absolute ease and without any form of punishment on the receiving boomboxes end. this paired with the ideal slingshot combo [ m2 - 30 damage Q, (all shots hit) - 40 damage, triple volley hover m1s - 60 damage ] = is a staggering 130 damage and even without the ideal Q you would still hit (being a little generous towards boombox) an 18 minimum with Q, which would bring it down to 108 still absolutely detrimental to the healthpool of boombox. not to mention m1 sniping boomboxes mid ult to shutdown, ontop of that the piercing m2s aswell as being THREE SHOT to slingshot phinisher.
slingshot is the reason i think boombox should be able to aim his attacks aswell as m1 in the air because they're seriously just makeshift melee hits and scythe gets to do it so why cant he :sob:
TL;DR, slingshot fly above shield, boombox sad cuz no damage, slingshot keel boombox (im sorry if the paragraph is convoluted)
It’s just depressing :(
As an almost level 300 support I strongly agree with u about the problems he has to face, especially his ineffective play style.
This is a great video but the footage on 7:10 is so distracting lmao
LOL
Also it’s kinda weird seeing people use the colors I use in game lol
Just a silly little goober :]
As a boombox main who recently decided to switch to Slingshot for a while, the nerfs were CRITICAL I hope the kit gets better.. peak video with peak script vroski !
TYSM for the support!
having been seen as one of the "top bb mains" for an incredibly long time i couldnt keep up anymore, it was so depressing and hard to deal with how much hes been gutted and yet i would be told its "my fault" for not being able to adapt to him. the comp scene has serious issues with balancing i think. i'm glad someones finally making a good statement about how ass he is, it finally feels like what i had been saying all that time has been seen.
Thank you for the kind words! :)
Oh well tvt)
Ok… for one, 30 minutes??

Again, thank you for being super supportive, I hope to not fall off or something. ;)

I also just want to point out - your channel description is funny to me when correlated with this videos nature lol TvT. Also its all g, im excited for whatever cool stuff u post in the future, and hopefully will intrigue and hook me as much as this one does. I wish you best of luck on your ventures :>
TYSM!
i remember when his ultimate swayed a match, now it’s just a small hiccup in the enemy’s win, very sad to watch his downwards spiral
I'm still in grief about how this even passed through :(
FINALLY everyone's talking about boomboxes horrible HORRIBLE NERFS 💔 my poor man boombox who barely gets any lore now gets barely any playability,,
his state as a support right now is just REALLY terrible and he feels like more of a burden to any team he's in that has no healers :[
may they buff my poor, silly little boy boombox.. 😔
Let’s just pray for the rework at this point 🙏
i started playing back in mid-february (of 2024) as a boombox onetrick and i was SO MAD when all the nerfs made him nigh unplayable
i started playing other phighters and now i usually go for biograft and vine staff, but i still consider boombox one of my mains and the character i'm second best with
i hope the rework advances him back to being on par with everyone else
more liveblogging below vvv
HUGE agree on the metronome. i just want it to be on beat man.... please... it isn't even really 120 bpm.........
his shield to allies at max charge can't even survive 2 ban hammer swings bro 😭😭😭 what did they do to my boy
proof that hyperlaser is the best support class /j
i miss q surfing 💔💔💔💔
stop usin the fandom wiki gawdamn!!
this some shit id hear with meet the grahams playing in the back
straight fire though, keep this up
Tysm!!
It's depressing say the least
Yapping level today: CATASTROPHIC
😇
boombox is my fav lol (I respect ur opinion)
Fair to like him lol
It hasn't even been a day bro..
No main shield support phighters please. That is terrible for such a fast paced game.
That was a great video, I can’t even say that you were wrong on any parts, but I do think M2 is slightly more useful than you said it was.
@NotedMedley EXACTLY YOU GET IT!!!!!!!!
hope ur doing okay man, it got pretty emotional in the beginning there.
as a skate main, I havent played too much of boombox, esp after the nerfs, but honestly i feel for you. i remember when i was feeling so frustrated at skateboard onboard nerf and how hopeless it felt to me at the time. take a break if you need to, okay? in the end phighting is not that serious and shouldnt be taken as such, the game wont go anywhere if you need to just take a break and get a breather for a while. the game is about fun, not stressing yourself so much over skill level and classes, ect ect.
Don't worry I'm fine! I just wanted to make a video highlighting some of the iceberg that has yet to be pondered over is all.
I don’t care if Boombox sucks right now, I have fun using him and that’s what matters to me :]
and that's fair to have the opinion!
THIS IS SICK DUDE WHENS THE NEXT VIDEO?
Uh huh
As an average Boombox main (since late 2022), I've had a lot of the same complaints. I feel like you get so little in return for how much effort you put in. Yes, it's a skill issue, but not everyone is a god given gift to phighting, the amount of skill you need to have in order to play him effectively is disheartening
Boombox is fundamentally broken, he’s a frontline support but he doesn’t have the bulk or sustain that lets him fulfill his role.
I have to give it a try in the future, thank you for the idea and the transparency! I’m sorry for how they treated our boy :(
I’m a relatively new Phighting player(started in late October) but it’s sad to see what Boombox was vs what Boombox is now.
I haven’t really played rocket so I’m not sure what the consensus is, but in scrims it’s actually the worst to go against

whar,,,,
Im edging to you
thank you day
aw dang it someone beat me to the boombox ranting video- whatever its peak anyway!
seriously though what did they do to boombox 😭
when i started the game i thought boombox would be fun to play because i love rhythm games and i used to play instruments so clearly timing only clicks instead of four keys to a metronome isnt that bad right?
i was playing for a bit and i was wondering why i had to rely on the visual more than audio cue and kept mistiming by a little bit, but then i pulled out an autoclicker to click at the exact pace of the metronome and it was just slowly getting further off, i never knew it was actually a problem and i thought i was just messing something up
Sorry mate, I went through a week of just work work work, so I wanted to get this out. I understand your confusion at first, I thought it was a me problem at first, I slowly noticed the problem more and more. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought this! Thank you for the kind words! :)

I will don't worry, just gotta deal with merry finals week!
@@NotedMedley exactly the main problem with boombox is exactly this rather then focusing on 1-2 main parts bb focuses on 3 (shield aoe and speed) but its not good at any infact most of the time you only need 2 which is why boombox gets counterd by almost every class

holy shit boombox was nerfed this bad?? dude i thought i was just washed
They gutted him from the inside out unfortunately 😞
This video generally answered on the questions i had on why boombox felt so weak
Glad to be of service!
i miss playing prenerf boombox
Rest in Peace..
19:43 Why is there "Protecting Overtone", when we are talking about raining tacos?
OH MY GOD I HATE DAVINCI SO MUCH :((((
I IMMEDIATELY KNEW I HEARD CRADLE 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏 PEAKKKK SPIRAL KNIGHTS IS PEAKKKKKK
YEAHHHHH!!! 🎶
No clue at this, sure he was overtuned, but this was just excessive.
look at 7:15 i feel bad his dps is just so ass
It’s unfortunate to watch how slow the Hyper’s HP goes down 😭

I'm eating a chicken sandwich right now
Yum!
30 MINUTES??
Yep! 😁
LOL HE JUST GOT BUFFS NOW HES BETTER JUST NOT ENTIRELY VIABLE
I mean I’ll take anything at this rate 😭
I love Boombox as a character but sadly now in game it feels like I'm not even allowed to pick him due to how bad he is now :(
I’m sorry :(
While i do agree with his poor state right now, and i do think hes arguably the most inconsistent support phighter, hes still playable to me.
I have (well.. Had) a clip of me getting a triple kill with boom. And now I can’t even get 1 kill with him, his current state is disappointing
He’s very hard to get used to and is just very inaccessible to new players with low morale at the start, which we will just hope that this won’t be the case for the rework
Talk to em medley
LETS GOOO JOM
It's frustrating.
This character has so much potential, but with the metronome being off, and his whole kit getting countered by almost the whole roster, he's just not a viable pick.
Knowing the metronome is offbeat, as a percussionist (while only for a year, I still had a constant metronome in my head) and a rhythm game enjoyer, it's one of the hardest things to hit knowing I have the constant beeping in my ear with no option of muting it and being able to focus on only the visual cues. It's either play with audio and have to deal with an offbeat metronome, or play with no audio at all, and playing with no audio is possibly one of the worst things to do (in my personal opinion.)
Boombox as a support is very weak, and is seen as more of a throw pick. Why choose Boombox when other supports can output more support and overall impact on the game than Boombox can?
Hopefully this Boombox rework that's in progress will actually make him a viable pick..
i was also here for all the scripting of this video LOLOLOL

The metronome is alright but he feels so weak
I hope they make bb lik a god clas in the future😢😢😢😢
@@tritiper4188 honestly dude, he needs a break :(

Hooskabanicnez. Its been a long time since we've met. You won't defeat me this time!😂
"Heh... you should know lying won't get you far Iridiiusonice." (You look around horrified as my cool epic voice speaks from the shadows) "Don't you remember the glory days, the shield on cast, the move speed boost, the overshield... those were the days of boombio... now..." *Steps out of shadows all cool and u poop* "Now they are in ruin..." "W-what Hooskabanicnez???
I thik they syhould make his m1 sync to the speed of the map music
Also another problem with the E ability ( I dont know if its just me) Sometimes when you do the shield pushback it just doesnt register at all, or just damages without pushback (it might be my lag but this mostly happens with either tanks or other fast melee)
Bro, in the Decoy deploy phrenzy, I did good with the other characters, like skate which people say is hard to use. But I absolutely hated boombox, he was so hard to use for me idk why but he was such an issue to use unlike the others. Now, when there’s a random phighters round I just pray not to get boombox 😭🙏
Real.. 😞
it’s lowkey so sad since he seems special due to his rhythm beat thing
ive been playing this bum since playtest 2, god a cant wait for this rework
I pray for you! 😭
Boombox is similar to Splatoon 3’s Splattershot Nova, it’s a cool design and has potential but has the worst balancing and is easily outclassed/countered.
I’m new to phighting but I’m dedicated to learning boombox even if it’s a horrible pick
Honestly a good understandable comparison! I wish you the best of luck learning him! :)
