The HDR 50 is classed as a paintball marker and is subject to the uk Airgun power restrictions of 6 ft-lbs or approx 7.5 joules.
All higher power levels are for use outside the uk in countries which allow.
This review talks about and refers to the paintball marker as a paintball marker in uk spec only.
I hope you enjoy the review of this revolver.

Anything that is "great fun" is NOT great fun when it reaches the UK!
Just throw a cup of hot tea on the attacker!
You can easily upgrade it to 30 Joules, and with a few extras even up to 90 joules, it's a beast. Heard jail time in UK 🙄
@@MrCh1lll 90 Joules is still only about half the power of a .22lr.
These guns look like great fun, but I wouldn't want to rely on one for defensive use.
Up grade packs available all over the internet
@@imdaprophet whats that?
I love the sound of it being pulled from and then reholstered. I'd buy it just for that alone!
fun fact, these paintball caliber markers got banned in Finland and confiscated from stores. They are trying to figure out how to ban them without banning all paintball guns. Right now the ban applies to all T4E markers because an online seller was selling the different types of more "dangerous" ammo.
Wow I had thought Finland wasn't as ridiculous on things like that as the rest of Europe. I guess I was misinformed.
Andy, I don't even own any airguns these days but I enjoy watching the odd episode. Your presentation has got a very professional feel to it and is a joy to watch. Kind of reminds me a little of Topgear when it was less of a pure comedy product. Keep up the great work mate.
HI Andy , great review today ... yes they are fantastic , i bought one of these myself ... i can confirm everything you say .... Worth buying to keep the balloons away !
thanks for your hard work Andy .. .... Cheers Simon
I've had an HDR 50 for quite some time and it's the most fun back yard blaster I've ever known. Great review, I can see you love it too !
I’ve got the Glock Gen 5 and the HDR 68 shotgun and both are top quality and pack one heck of a punch .. great guns
A real balloon stopper which sits in my gun cupboard in its holster. In the event that I ever felt threatened by balloons or tin plates, I think it is sufficiently safe to store in the house. No question that it would leave a bruise the size of a tin plate on the chest, or leg of any balloon that wanted some action and at 5-10 yards it could easily stop a balloon.
Make sure the old bill don't hear about this.
@@anneominous7172 Why? It's perfectly legal to own this, and to pop balloons with it.
Where can I legally buy one of these
@@shibbymiyah6614 if you are in the UK there are a number of suppliers. I purchased mine from Modern Combat Sports.
@@stefanmorawiec4565 thank you..I will order one promptly
I got the HDR 50 a few years ago, and mine came with 5 mags, which I thought was an absolute bargain at the time. I always pick up spare mags so having them in the box really was the cherry on top. I also have the HDR 50's little brother, the Umarex Tornado (or Brodax, for our US cousins) which is pretty good, esp for the price, and you can use the Umarex Colt Python mags in the Tornado and shoot pellets.
It looks a really great fun gun. I have a Umarex replica Colt 45 which is also great. I got it as "toy" but was amazed at its performance. At ten yards, hand held all, 6 •177 pellets are within a 2 inch circle. Maybe you could test one of the Umarex replica range, I think that it'd be of interest to your subscribers.
I've got a Umarex Colt 45. Cool for shooting tin cans in the back garden.
All my neighbors are deaf, great fun for hours.
Here in Greece, 11 Joules and the second generation 13 Joules.
I love to see how much fun you had with this one
I've had one for 2 years and I still have great fun shooting it. A fantastic cheap revolver.
Yep, I've got the UK version and the first try out shot went straight through the plywood backboard of the target with a hard rubber ball round 🙄 It's also very loud. So your neighbours might not share your enthusiasm for a bit of garden target practice.
@BruceWayne-sz3th the UK one is < 7 joules due to legal restrictions.
@BruceWayne-sz3th yep, you got it 👍
I believe paintball markers can go higher than 6ft/lbs, and 11 joule is still legal. I also believe the 7 joule model can be tuned the highest.
on youre property not youre neighbours business theyre probably jelus
@@MHLivestreamsI can’t find the 11j version anywhere to buy in the UK only the 7j good to know they can be enhanced though.
Just acquired two, one the HDR50 and the other the TR50, just in case the balloons appear out of nowhere to save re loading , so in effect 12 rounds available !!
Was an instant fan of this gun from day 1, got mine last summer. at about 25 yards was able to knock tin cans all around the yard, Found it benifited from painting the forend blade white, the recent clone from Snowpeak has high viz fibre sights, much better set up in my opinion.
The Umarex quality shines, found alternate cheaper brand .5 cal rubber balls available on line without the eyewateringly high price tag for OE suppliers.
This looks like the hobby I needed!
Home defence-24 in Germany has some parts to make it better 👍🏻👍🏻. Much better 👍🏻
But will cost as much as the revolvers purchase price. 1/3 or 1/4 as many shots available but more confident shots.
Looks like the 11 joule version for USA is the way to go. Thanks Andy!
If you fancy a mandatory 5 year jail sentence if you're UK based

A bit of light hearted fun even for the most serious of shooters. Another great review Andy👍
I have both HDR50 Gen1 and Gen2 great Markers.
Had one a few years ago when I lived in Finland. Great fun for plinking out in the countryside, however calling them 'home defence' is a bit cheeky on the part of Umarex
......YES THE "'CHEEKY'' AREA GETS GREAT RESULTS... BUT AIM JUST A TAD HIGHER AND THERE'S ALOT OF SCREAMING!
Hi Andy. Great vid and range footage. Light hearted, fun and educational as always. The HDR might not be everyone’s cup of tea but there’s no doubting that it’ll provide endless hours of fun for a lot of people. Hope you enjoyed your hols.
8:04 The echo on that laugh made that little section so much more enjoyable to watch! -JB
I live in France and I have just bought the HDR 68 revolver. It's the big brother to the HDR 50 and looks similar - apart from the size, and it's only 5 shot..
With the rubber ball ammo provided it delivers over 16 J. With other types of ammo you can apparently get up to 19.9J.
The legal limit in France is 20J. ( Up from 10J in 2013 ).
Not sure how long the CO2 lasts. I haven't had a chance to properly test it yet. I think it's only 10 shots.
If you want self defense try Z-ram 50 cal slugs
Hi Andy I am 74 years old and just been mugged by a crazy Junkie! I need some form of self defence that is legal but not lethal, I have watched many of your videos and the videos are very well done. Can you advise. The guy pled guilty to serious assault and three other charges, I was jumped in my backyard. I just dont feel safe anymore.
I like these as a target gun. They seem to have a punch and make a nice sound. I do, however, prefer the HDP.
In Scotland we need a license for a spoon. #SNPclowns
8:02 - First time I've been moderately terrified by an Andy's Airgun Reviews programme 😂😂 Very amusing! Great product. Thanks Andy 👌
Love these. Such fun.
The holsters great too.
I have the full powered version. Shot straight through the door!
Is it legal in uk?
@@replayers5354 No, not the full powered 11 joules version. The UK version have 7.5 joules.
@@k-d-n ok thanks enjoy your purchase
I’ve heard of a gun’s loud report but never of anyone having a good rapport with the sound of a gun
I got my 84 year old mum one of these just in case of any nasty callers, she's now a bona fide Dirty Harry fan ready to take on all-comers!
I haven't seen a holster for these before now, looks good. If it was legal for me to have the "other" ammo, I'd own one of these and maybe the rifle conversion kit from Africa.
Broom handle and a Kitchen Roll tube?
How much is that? and does it make it correct to have it as a 12?
Hmm. I wonder what 'HDR' stands for....
By the way, at 8:44 I think you meant 'report' (an expolsive sound), not 'rapport' (a close and harmonious relationship).
I'd imagine if you caught some naughty balloons inside your home, this would be enough to make them think twice.
Thanks so much for the interesting and great review, Andy. I look forward to seeing more reviews.
Looks like great fun. Top notch video as usual Andy.
Andy, it's great to see one of your fine videos reviewing this pistol. I've been seriously considering acquiring one, and it looks like great fun - though seeing it drawn from a holster makes me think of Roger Rabbit for some reason. When you do a follow-up video, could you give some idea as to how many shots you can expect from both the low & higher power versions? Thanks for an informative and enjoyable video.
I've got one, they are great fun. Check out 'Mad Dog Airguns', he is a Brit living in France so he plays with the more powerful versions.
@@stuartmccloud307 Thanks for the tip. Umarex is distributing this gun in a confusing manner. I live in the US where higher powered air guns are available, but Umarex doesn't offer the higher powered European home defense model here for some reason. Peculiar. I just think these look like crazy fun.
i would think some simple fiddling with its insides should unlock its full potential, but even still...
should you choose to defend yourself with it, 6 rounds from it is more likely to seriously anger an attacker rather the stop him!
but on the bright side it will be empty when its taken from you, so it cant be used to shoot you with before being used as a hammer to whack you over the head with... repeatedly.
@@ralphbooger4756 You may have a point - but after seeing some videos where gormless bozos volunteered ti be shot by the thing and the amount of pain they needlessly suffered, a couple of shots would probably be enough to persuade most folks to leave your premises - which is the point, after all. I just want to scare & dent tin cans w/one - looks like great fun - which is the major point!
@@ralphbooger4756 au contraire. Speaking from medical knowledge, trust me on this, in a bad situation those half inch balls if sadly unfortunate enough to hit the wrong spot would very likely be fatal. About 30 years ago we worked on a chap who'd been hit in the neck from about, we were told by the armed police who guarded us and him in theatre, 4 feet with a .22 round. He was lucky enough to walk out of hospital 2 weeks later.
They look loads of fun, imagine turning up at the range with the paint balls. I don't think you would be there for long 🤣🤣😉
it was a review like this that prompted me to buy one. 🙂
Are you allowed to buy devastator or Z ram rounds in the uk?
I was wondering the same thing I guess in the six joule version its legal as its still sub 6ftlb but in the 11 joule could potentially be an issue?
Not seen you for years - glad your channel came up again - subscribed again
well, nice to have to back, but I’ve been here for years 👍😉
As long as you buy and use this item or similar for it’s intended purpose, a bit of fun in your back garden etc, where do you stand legally if you should decide to fire off a few rounds at someone attempting to or having actually broken into your property? I know this whole area is a literal minefield, but a basic overview would be greatly appreciated.
Personally anyone coming into my home illegally gaining entry, would get the consequences, these days nutters carry knives etc etc....would you protect your family? To me it's a no brainer
Great review as always Andy .Would love to get my paws on one to try out myself .
As usual Andy a great video, hope you are going to re-do the HDX .68 video again.
Another UA-camr made the point that if you were to use this item for home defence (HDR) as it's name suggests, you could be looking at some serious porridge. You would probably be on safer ground legally if you were to use it to beat an intruder with, rather than fire it at them. Weirdly, in the U.S., where actual guns are legal to own, the HDR 50 is limited to 7.5 joules just as our's are.
Great review as always, I loooove my HDR50 💀👍
Paintball version is worth a look 👍
Rotherham needs a few of these
There seems to be some debate about the variable legality of these guns.
You can legally use the 11 joule model in the UK, providing you only fire frangible ammo. ie. things like paint balls, chalk balls etc that break up on impact.
With the 7.5 joule version you can use hard rubber balls legally as it's classified at an air pistol. So firing a paint ball with the 11 joules and it's legal, but fire a rubber ball with the 11 and you go to prison.
Keep either by your bed as a potential home defence weapon, and fire it at a burglar and you'll have some serious explaining to do to the judge, here in the free nation of UK, we are not permitted to defend our homes and families.
Personally I would prefer to keep a very sharp sword by my bed for potential intruders to "taste" but again if I use it, I'll be charged with a multitude of weapons offences. "It's honestly only there for display purposes your Honour".
Sounds like you need an old fashioned bed pan😜 if that happens to be the first thing you grab and start swinging. 🤷👍
Yes officer like I said you need to look for someone with a blue circle between the eyes . Good enough to mark your burglars
I need one now! In my life such fun.
This video dissappeared and now it's back! 25k views and 111 comments in one day 👀
What would you do to modify the power?, not that I would
You said it - looks like a real fun “gun” just need the sun 🌞 certainly on my bucket list😀
It looks like a h8r airsoft pistol I had 1 in white it was really handy on the field
Hmmmm so here in Scotland it's not an airgun so I don't need a licence. Its a paint ball gun. Sign me up
Night scirmish in the woods with tracer glow in the dark rounds would be a laugh
HDR, Home Defence Revolver, and yes you can defend your castle.
Hi Andy. Been looking in to getting one of these (the 11 joule version which are readily available within the uk) I’ve been seeing a lot of information stating that if you use any ammo aside from paintballs or frangible ammo it would make the hun illegal?
i had the 11j version then shortly returned it as i was unsure about the frangible ammo thing
The outdoor shots look like spring mill golf course, I wish it was :)
The look of bemusement and wonder on the faces of Americans watching this video must be priceless!😂
Sick gun, have one my self. Best one in the collection
Can you order them in the uk?
If I shoot a balloon in the face...Will the balloon be temporarily incapacitated 😅
Hand made catapult 240 fps 55 grain ammo short draw 7ft lbs long draw long draw 290fps 55 grain 10.2 ft lb keep it
hey Andy we like to see the full power version
sadly anything above 7.5 joules requires a section 5 firearms license and they are only available to police and military here in the U.K. So naturally I won’t be reviewing one..Sorry!
@@AAROnair Oh i understand... But thank you for the great review Andy always enjoy your video's
I can see Marble experts using these on the streets.
6 juelles is very low. But it would cause pain in the face or crotch.. I live in the us. So I'll buy the the smaller round but higher power model
What a great gun fantastic look like good fun thank you for the review 👍
i have seen alot of uk websites selling the more powerfull markers like the 16 joule hdr .68 would it be illegal to buy them if its from a uk website or are the sellers going to get in trouble???
Fragment-able ammo only in those ones 👍🏻. That’s the loop hole
Take a look at the JPX Jet Protector.
🎉Yeeha! that got us on the road with zombies to go and I recommend valken gotcha ammo to boot!
Thanks to Andy airgun reviews!🎉
Be looking forward too more of these
Can you get steel balls for it?
Has anyone tried the Snowpeak Defender .50? It's basically a copy of this with slightly different styling. Around 99 quid.
So im geussing they'd shoot steel ball bearings too.
Yes they do!!
Hey I recently got this marker.... I live in the US but somehow got this version..... I contacted the manufacturer by phone by email and mail but they haven't gotten back to me.... They don't even answer my calls and put me on hold anymore..... They must have blocked my number..... I told the guy at the store everything and now he won't let me return it because he thinks that I broke it or that I am trying to trick him in some way..... Does anyone know how to de-restrict the UK version for use in the USA? Not for use on the paintball field but for back yard type fun.... And help would be much appreciated....
Why dose no one talk about the HDP .50 ? They sell accuracy barrels for the HDR but not for the superior HDP .50 .
Hi, Andy how far will these shoot accurately with paintball ammo.
Love these ,can't wait to get one
Morning Andy, Great review, looks a lot of fun.
I really want one, I need one for the hunt.
Do these require any type of licence for these like paintball guns with orange bits on them? I'd have thought with a hole that big in the front you might get shot by SWAT! Love though, the grin on Andy's face indicates a lot of fun to be had.
As long as you use fragable ammo (paintballs) it ok using non fragable ammo (rubberballs) males the over 7.5 j illegal
I’m not a fan of guns scared of them, but son insists I get one because there are lots of break in around where we live. Can this kill someone if fired
I think that could be a fun wee plinker for back garden
👍👍👍😜🏴🦕🦄😁🤞✌️
I got one question for you I am More of a shotgun person Then a rifle. Do they have one shotgun will shoot out 2 or 3 pellets at a time or do they not make 1?
I like it, might need it when meat is hard to get hold of?
We have the 11 joule version in South Africa 🌍
are you allowed to use this for home defence as all the other folks claim?
Oh yes, like it. Thanks Andy
Hi there, just been suggested to me. Now I gotta get one 😂. Never crossed my mind before. I won’t the foreign one with steel balls mind 😂
Weren't these available to buy in the UK at 11.5 joules a couple of years ago??
Still are, as long as only used for frangable rounds,
@@jizzmonkey9679 ah yes. Of course.. 😇
Can I ask why is it you seem to have removed your previous videos covering some of the T4E guns, for example the HDX 68 pump action shotgun ??
Can you get pepperballs in the uk just curious i live in the usa?
I could paint some seagulls with this badboy
Looking forward to the .68 review!
