Was at the game with my Dad. Dad passed away in May. Thanks Dad for all the special times.
Sorry to hear about your dad. I’m glad you got to witness one of the great moments in Braves history with him.
I was also at that game w my dad who has passed..I remember Tim Raines was hit in the head by a pitch..also someone let go of the bat and it hit a lady in the stands I believe the game was delayed very briefly due to that..
Great memories for you. Sorry for your loss.
I’m glad you have that wonderful memory.
Awesome memory!
Those late 70's teams and early 80's with Horner, Murph, Claudell, Chambliss, Ramirez, Benedict, Butler, Pocoroba, Royster, Matthews etc. were so fun to watch. I remember as a youngster staying up as a night owl in the summer months and they used to replay every Braves game on TBS at around 3am. Awesome memories.
They were a lot of fun to watch. Some of the most exciting games were with the Dodgers. It didn't matter how well either team was doing, when they got together it was awesome. I miss those days!
They sucked
Yes and Phil Niekro with his 49 MPH knuckleballs that no one could hit
Dont forget Hubbard and Chambliss!!! Man what a childhood with TBS and Braves baseball
@@billysikes1374 Hubbard was scrappy as hell and Chambliss had that sweet swing!!! Chambliss was a damn good hitter and underrated. Great days indeed!!
The most running he ever did in his career.
That Hairy Horner...how much have your ran lately kasey?
Horner was like Kevin Mitchell. I'll never forget Jack Buck calling him a "Chunk of a man." Baseball was a great game back then.
Bob Horner is probably Thor
4 homers and he just drops his head and runs the bases. Class
I remember this game. The Braves still lost. It was tough being a Braves fan in those days.
I concur. Lol people laughed at me being a Braves fan until they went worst to first. Then everybody was a Braves fan lol
You still beat my Cubs on most nights in Atlanta though...lol
One of the sweetest swings in baseball. Wrists of steel.
I think his "wrist of steel" was what mada him retire. I soooooo wished he could have had a full, healthy career.
I wouldn't call it a sweet swing, but he could mash it.
A perfect, compact swing. If he had stayed healthy and had a full career he would have been a hall of fame player. 162 game average of .277avg, 35hr, 109rbi and 89runs.
Yes he definitely had a nice swing but he kept breaking/injuring his wrists from what I can remember.
@@red380zzz that's how much torque he had on swing ,wrist couldn't take it ,
Bob Horner, a forgotten player today. He was a great home run hitter. If only he had been able to stay healthy no telling how many homers he would have hit.
Straight from ASU to the Braves. He is one of my favorites.
I dint forget him ..... come on Joe Biden dont speak for me ..... he was great, most people dont no this butt Horner was born in Kansas! He reallt was!
He is still playing in Japan. He made a comeback. He hit 55 dingers last season
A Braves play by play commentary was unforgettable back in the 80's.
Yes...they were the BEST!
I remember this happening. Skip Carey, Ernie Johnson, legends of the booth
Most definitely!
I spent many days in old Fulton County Stadium as a kid rooting for the Braves and Falcons.
Horner, Murphy, Glavine...Loved watching BB on TBS...
"America's Team"....They lived in the basement of the NL East for so long, they had to be charged rent!
Maddox. Avery. Smoltz
Smoltz Maddox avery
@@sambrewer5800 Avery seldom gets mentioned with Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux, and that shouldn't be. He was a stud.

Rumor has it to this day, Andy McGaffigan is still staring out in the direction of left field. No one can convince him to leave.
During those long summers back in the mid 80s, I spent many hours watching the Braves on WTBS and they became my second favorite team, even though they were not so hot on the diamond; it sure was sweet to watch them catapult to greatness a decade later.
That’s Hall of Famer Willie Stargell , who was a Braves 1st base coach as Horner was rounding the bases.
And I was there😀 Sitting in the right field stands. Right behind Andre Dawson who was my favorite player. Dawson went 2-6 with a homer & a double. But Montreal won the game and Mitch Webster went 5-6 in the game also. What a game.
Andre Dawson graduated from a high school that is two blocks from my house. The baseball field is named after him!
@@gofishglobal7919 That's cool!
Bob Horner was a monster.
He sure was.
I was at Fuzzy's in Atlanta watching this game on TV after we played our softball game in DeKalb County. Great times.
He handled his homers like a man and the pitcher responded like a man (didn't throw at him). Something you probably wouldn't see today.
I watched this game on TBS when I lived in Boron California. I was 15 years old. Horner was one of my favorites. Injuries cut his career short. Thank you for sharing! Awesome!
Horner was a stud!!! very under-rated player
My baby blue, road, Bob Horner jersey is one of my prize possessions. It's a reproduction, but it's badass.
He could get injured jogging to first base. Major baby.
I can see why athletes never want to retire, because if you're lucky enough to have a day such as this like Bob Horner had that day, nothing in the real world can match the feeling at the time.
John Stirling called Braves games!?!? Wow...Memories
I wish you all kept him. I cannot stand Stirling.
@@FAITHandLOGIC Yeah--I didn't realize he was doing his inane "it is high, it is far" refrain even before the Yankees.
@@jpsned I wonder if he ever called them a "Hornerian" or "Murphian" blast? Probably just added that schtick when he started doing Yankee games.
@@robbarbieri8676 Prolly. 👍
Yes. He was great with the Braves. The schtick came with the Yankees. Terrible with the Yankees. @@robbarbieri8676
Bob should have gotten into the HOF just for this
He lives in Irving Tx now...just up the road from me....
Horner on the corner! This guy would've been great if he could've stayed healthy.
And laid off the suds.
Yea he's conditioning wasn't great.
He WAS great despite the injuries. He was forced out of baseball due to collusion. The injuries were just an excuse. He deserved another shot.
Mark Uyehara I’m not familiar with Bob Horner’s history, but if collusion was involved, why would MLB want to blackball him? Was there something he did?
I lived in Germany at this time because my dad was in the Army. I watched this game on TV but it was on a delay. I didn't know the outcome so even though it wasn't live it felt like it was. Jeff Reardon was a pretty damn good closer back then.
How I remember watching this games with My Dad. His Favorite team the Braves, Back in the 80's. I guess he was shaping me up to Be a Disaplen person. And to be Respectful to everyone. I Miss You Old Friend. Love Baseball. HOUSTON TEXAS. GOD BLESS.
I was 10 and at this game! Thanks for the memories!!
Getting old. Remember Avery hitting batter and cleared dugouts when they pitched close to him? I was at the game with the expos when batters were throwing bats in each teams dugouts after the swing.
Awsome
You know it, brother. I remember the Avery game. Were they playing San Diego when I think Craig Lefferts thru at Pascual Perez? Man, they fought for an hour!
@@superd9072 I don't quite remember.
I was young. I do remember certain things tho. I do remember a game with the expos where them and the braves were purposely throwing bats into each other's dugout. One or more went into the stands. I can't seem to find footage of it tho.
I already typed that just realized. I have great childhood memories of going to the braves games.
I spent 3hrs str8 watching baseball vids that day I 1st commented.
I like that vid of Pedro Guerrerro getting hit and throwing the bat. He is a beast. If he got ahold of that pitcher. Omg
@@sambrewer5800 Sam, I think I m with ya on the Expos. Something you said about the bats thrown into the dugout 's brought bk memories...and if I'm wrong, it was the 80s era expos, they deserved s'thing thrown at them... Thanks for the memories, Bud.... Chris
Without Horner and Murphy, the Braves might have gone 0-162 back in those days. 😄
For some reason the game was not televised in Savannah. But I listened to the entire game on the radio. Bob Horner was my favorite player. I'm 68 years old now and I think that was my most pleasurable time in sports man I wood get so upset when he was injured which was a lot. He would have probably hit close to 500 homers if he does stay healthy. Thank you mr. Bob Horner For The Memories
As a kid in the 80's i would try to imitate his swing. Bob had so much power !
This game also marked the only career home run for Al Newman, who would go on to set a record streak of ABs without one.
Went straight from ASU to majors
and won ROTY in 1978.
Horner's was a body definitely not built on steroids. I love watching these old videos of guys in the 80s who looked like they never went near a weight room, yet were launching tape measure dingers purely on sweet swings and natural strength.
Seriously underrated player who, despite battling injuries his entire career, and being in Dale Murphy’s shadow was elite. In 9 years with Braves he averaged an OPS of .839 and OPS+ of 128. For context, both of those averages are better than Murphy’s with the Braves. Love Dale, not knocking him at all, lifting Horner.
Loved this guy as a kid!
Soon as I heard the first few words of his delivery, I knew it was John Sterling. Didn’t know he did Braves games!
This was an era of baseball where the players still looked like beer league softball players. Horner is a great example of it.
I can almost remember watching this game with my daddy on WTBS ! Miss those days daddy passed away 4 yrs ago Id do anything to go back
I remember that moment on sports news and TV Sports great moment in. MLB
Watching on TBS
He had a great 10 career on pace for 30 to 40 hr's & 100 + RBI's every year but only made it into the 30's a few times & 90's a couple because he never played a full season. Still a great player I wish we could have seen more of. To bad those 4 only produced 5 runs. They had a hard time getting guys on base back then.
1:30 Proof that John Sterling's signature call of "It is high, it is far, it is gone!" did not debut with the Yankees.
He just made it more dramatic for radio with the Yanks.
And back then when he said it, the ball actually left the park.
Horner using the Expos staff like batting pratice
1 of the greatest Arizona State Sun Devils to swing a bat. I know Reggie gets most of the pub, but he was only in college for a year. Horner at least stuck around for his full term.
He had such a sweet swing. It looked effortless. And the things is, he came up for bat in the bottom of the 9th and he could've made it 5. Because... the Braves sucked. He hit 4 homers, and they were still losing the game. I remember that season vividly. There was a lot of promise. Murphy, Chambliss, Horner... But regardless. I will always remember this game and Horner's swing.
Horner great hitter
it was Bob Horner's world and the rest of us were just living in it.
I started watching the Braves in 83 being from New Orleans no baseball. So I guess it was weird to hate the Falcons but love the Braves. Dale Murphy will always be my favorite baseball player. My Dad use to love Glennn Hubbard.
I was at this game. Best birthday ever. It was me and my grandmother birthday present from my uncle. Her birthday was the day before.
one thing about Bob, he sure had the Mickey Mantle home run trot down to perfection.
It's even more impressive because he did it at home. Almost everyone who does it does it on the road because the team almost always wins, and you need that 9th inning so you get an extra half inning to work with on the road. Doing it at home means you probably got four in a row.
Funny to hear John Sterling and not see the Yankees out there (called the third home run).
I wonder what Willie Stargell, who was Atlanta's first base coach, had to be thinking.
"this guy just hit 4 home runs."
Bob Horner and Kirk Gibson, both bad asses that will never be in hall of fame,
Saw Bob Horner play in his rookie year…..good times
I sat in those orange seats so many times. Go Braves!
What a game!! Those 80s Braves; what a line-up!! Anyone have the complete TBS 1984 Brave game against the Padres with the wildest group of fights in MLB history??? Been looking for it for years!!
My forever my favorite player in the world!!!
Cool stuff, I grew up in Washington as a Mariners fan through and through but TBS always had the braves games all through the 90s when I was a kid so they've always been kinda my NL guys.
I was 6...remember this well!
Special thanks to UA-camr Expos Classics who uploaded the full length version of this game
Imagine that. Stirling doesn’t make a stupid, cheesy HR call and it sounds just fine.
I remember watching this live when I was 5, seemed like I was watching something special even then...
That 4,count'em as his 87Fleer baseball card says!!!
Andy McGaffigan. Ever seen his 1988 Topps card #488? Looks like he's still pissed about giving up those first three. 😂
I was watching that game as a kid, but I remember like it was yesterday, it ranks up there with Rick Camp home run in extra innings, or Sid Bream safe sliders into home plate... 😂
The palm ball reference shows how this is dated and later in the clip it was cool to hear John sterling.
So cool. Love it.
I half expected to hear Skip say, " and a fan from Duluth caught that one." 😁
Maybe he said it when he switched to the radio broadcast in the 5th inning.
That swing might be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen
He was well known for it.
Shame there was only 471 fans in attendance, way to go Brave fans
You might want to count that again these are not the Oakland A's of 2024
Great snap swing
Ernie with the first call followed by Skip, John Sterling on the third and the professor Pete Van Wieren on the last one. Horner deserved a much better national following. Could have been one of the best ever but always struggled to stay healthy. Typical Braves game from that era. Nobody at the game and even with the four homers we still lost.
"BEAST"
Horner used to stand on top of the plate. My favorite Brave back in the day. #5 could really hit!
Amazing game...😊
Braves everyday. All day every day. Braves. Braves braves.
Back when Atlanta was a good ole country place.
It was like a small town. You would see folks you knew just about wherever you went. You could be across town in 15 minutes. Good times.
If Horner would have had a healthy career, both he and Murphy would be in the Hall of Fame.
No quesion.
The problem I have with Murphy is that, even though he had an outstanding peak (winning two MVPs in that stretch), he had trouble sustaining it from the late 80s on. I have similar issues with Mattingly as well. HOF-caliber peaks with substantial drops in production due to health issues. That’s why it’s incredibly difficult to get into Cooperstown. For a short period of time you look like a lock for the Hall, but a short time later, you’re struggling to be average.
@@cityhawk Murph just one day couldn't hit the high hard fastballs like he did earlier in career. Kinda sad as Dale was so close to a HoF career.
Pro!
If I had had a fantasy baseball team back then I probably would have had Horner on the bench that day
That’s one big boi
Present day baseball sucks sooooo bad that I have to watch partial games from 1985, 38 years ago, to get my fix.
I never saw a 4 homer game live.
Good thing they went back to the buttoned-down red and navy look shortly after that season. Never saw so many Dunlop diseased professionals in my life, and it was very evident. Some of that was coaches, so that might be a bit harsh, but…damn.
Back then your Braves ticket meant "sit anywhere" you like!
Great slugger when healthy
Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. When ballparks were ballparks!
More notable in this game than Horner hitting 4 HR was that Al Newman hit his one and only big league homer.
My bald spot would get soooo fried in that Atlanta sun!
Crazy how old timey this footage looks now.
in what way
@@BaseballPlayer0 It's old VHS tape.
Back when players could hit homers without doing a choreographed dance routine while rounding the bases...good times
i seem to remember one more at bat to the warning track...
Wow.
I saw this game. After 3 HRs, on his 4th AB swings at the 1st pitch and pops up. I was thinking wut RU doing? The final AB it seems he just served it over the fence; maybe paying more attention to contact and allowing his natural power to get it...
Popped up to the catcher I think. First major league game I went to
I remember watching this game. I was 10 years old.
By the way, was John Sterling an announcer for the Braves or Expos??
Sterling was a Braves announcer a good number of years in the 80's.
I skipped school and watched this game.
Fact, Horner was 1 of 2 guys at the time who never played minor league baseball
The game was on a Sunday. You shouldn't skip Sunday school.
McGaffigan throws like a Gay French King
The launching pad.
