The mid to late late 2000s were a weird time for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. In 2005 we got Shadow the Hedgehog for the PS2, XBOX and Gamecube, which…pretty much speaks for itself. Then, infamously in 2006 we got Sonic The Hedgehog, a game set to reboot and revitalize the series on then next gen hardware, which did anything but that, if we are putting it lightly. Despite this however, we got Sonic Unleashed in 2008 and Sonic Colors in 2010, two games that are still considered to be some of the best in the series even today. Not to mention we also had the handheld spin offs and even Olympic crossovers with a certain red plumber. To say Sonic was a mixed bag during this time is an understatement, and a huge part of that was the Sonic Storybook sub-series on the Wii. These two games are responsible for introducing a whole generation of sonic fans into the franchise, thanks to both the massive success and casual appeal of the Wii getting it into many peoples homes. With the success of the movies, recent release of Sonic Origins, and a new 3d entry on the horizon, I though it would be fun to check out the sub-series that introduced my-self and many others to the blue blur himself.
Released in 2007, Sonic and the Secret Rings was released on to the world's most popular brick, jump starting the Storybook series as it would later be called. While It was praised by many critics upon release, nowadays the general consensus on the game is lukewarm at best, to negative at worst. I myself haven't touched the game since my first playthrough some odd years ago, so I'm interested in seeing which camp I fall under so many years later. Join me today as we take a look at the Sonic Storybook Series, 15 years later. This is a Sonic Storybook Series Retrospective The Best and Worst Sonic Games
This is a retrospective review on the Sonic Storybook series, which includes Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight. This review has Sonic and the Secret Rings gameplay and cutscenes. My Sonic Retrospective has Sonic and the Black Knight Cutscenes and music. Today I am looking at the Sonic Storybook Series in 2022

The only thing I'll say is that I heavily disagree on the statement of SR havin a "nothing story". The relationship that's built in cutscenes & gameplay between Sonic & Shara is very fun & heartwarmin imo. However the main theme of the story bein how complicated Abusive relationships can be is done wit so much expert subtlety that not even I as a kid (this was 1 of my 3 1st sonic games) but many adults for years didn't understand & jus laughed at the handkerchief scene like it was "silly"(I didn't laugh per say but I still didn't get it). I think it's powerful & can not only connect wit ppl who alr understand this but can teach others down the line more of how the world, humans, & generally relationships can be romantic or otherwise.

She must have failed her Summoning classes cuz she asked for a knight presumably from anywhere in the multiverse… and she gets Sonic 😂😂 who is not a knight at all.

Really good retrospective right here. The quality of the writing and the humor made it pretty entertaining to watch. For a first video I think you did a damn good job and I'm looking forward to seeing more content like this!

Great video, it was very interesting to see how in-depth you went with these games narratives and mechanics, which are rarely given much coverage by other reviewers.
I loved the humor too, it made for a nice pace that kept things from dragging, which I really appreciated!
The only critiques I can offer is that your voice-over seems too quiet in comparison to the game audio. Outside of that, I really enjoyed my time seeing your thoughts on these games, and I hope that I get to play them myself one day!
I hope to see more content from you in the future :)

I've finally gotten around to play Sonic Colors and I honestly don't get why people praise it so much... to me it did the biggest cardinal sin any form of entertainment could do. Be boring. Even 06 was entertaining in a disastrous trainwreck kind of way, and while Shadow honestly does fall down the bottom of the barrel when it comes to 'having fun' it at least has the ridiculously horrible cutscenes to somewhat make you chuckle... I was thoroughly bored throughout Colors. I thought people were exaggerating when they were talking about it being mostly 2d, but they weren't. It was actually way more 2d than I expected. The worst part about this is... I don't understand why fans don't compare the Genesis classics to these '2d segments' in modern games? I mean they're both 2d platformers. I got through Sonic Origins a few weeks before playing Colors and holy shit did the absolute gap in quality completely floor me. I enjoyed almost every second of the classic games (CD not so much) but I was either falling asleep in Colors' 2d segments or wanting to smash my head into a wall because of how annoying a random spike in difficulty was... despite not being difficult as much as it was actually just obtuse.
Ignoring all that, even the few 3d segments in the game feel like.... auto pilot. Unleashed constantly tests your reflexes with obstcales that are challenging just enough that you need to focus and try hard, but not enough to make you seriously angry (Eggmanland not withstanding), Generations isn't remotely as reflex heavy but it compensates by taking a different approach. You have waaaay more optional routes for exploration and to engineer the fastest route you can take, or just the most fun route you want to take. Colors doesn't really do that, you have a stupid crawling drift that interrupts your flow but you don't even have to drift often enough in the game for this to be a serious issue, more importantly it has a lot of rail grinding and not in a good way but in a dull way.
It wasn't all bad, there was an act or two, or maybe three across the whole game where I was thinking to myself "damn, this is kindda good" but they were not often enough for me to truly have my experience influenced by them. I can't even remember the names of the planets/stages let alone those acts. The whole game just feels kind of repetitive and boring, and not repetitive in the way that Heroes has you going up the same poles and same little 'puzzles' every single stage but repeititve in terms of adrenaline I guess? I never got a feeling of enjoyment rising, it was a flat line throughout. Sometimes it would tick up a little or fall down a little but ultimately it was just "ok I guess" the whole game.
I realize that to get the most out of the game you should experiment with wisps and take their alternate routes around the map, but... they weren't engaging to me. Sonic has never felt like a collectathon or a "explore for secrets" kind of game at least to me. CD tried it, but they couldn't truly commit to that identity and allowed you to skip it with the special stages instead. It just feels almost lame in comparison to what the more unique gameplay styles Sonic offers can be. A prime example of this is the 2d segments of modern games compared to the classic 2d games, they're both 2d and both are platformers where you CAN go fast. But for some reason the modern 2d segments play really similar to I guess any regular 2d platformer out there? The classic Sonic games have a platforming formula that is truly unique out there in the world of 2d platformers, and yet fo rsome reason the fandom is okay with this franchise not borrowing from its old style of gameplay when it decides to integrate 2d again after 06?
Generations clearly had some sort of idea about this, since they brought back classic Sonic and his gameplay style... but even Generations has 2d gameplay inside of its 3d stages, and it's not as good as classic Sonic's 2d stages in terms of that 'unique sonic 2d platforming'. So with all of that in mind, the wisps overall come off like reinventing the wheel but being less original about it. "Our 2d gameplay segments are kind of basic and not that creative compared to modern 2d platformers, let's add a bunch of powerups that are not really mechanics of the gameplay that alter Sonic's moveset like the mario games have done to develop their platforming, but instead temporary breaks from Sonic's moveset to this entirely different thing that's kind of lame and limited to specific scenarios where it's useful rather than versatile and engaging." And all of that is said while they're sitting on some of the most unique 2d platformers of all time, that have inspired countless platformers to be made.
This was spurred by your mention of Colors at the start of this video, I don't know I guess I'm hoping for a response to discuss Colors in an interesting conversation but there's no obligation to do that so you could take this as just some proof that there are fans out there that do have different takes on Colors than what is usually heard. I just feel like the 2d segments were done better by the classic games and the 3d segments (which barely exist) were done better by the other modern games, so it ends up as a "greatest mediocrities" album instead of a "greatest hits". Forcing me to zone out a lot of the time, which is worse than just being flawed but creative could've been.

@@En_Jaay Please, don't use that argument just like that was always working. What is he doing here? Why has he felt the need to say that? It wasn't an opinion, he just said that for fun and being dumb. And excuse me but a franchise where the majority of the story is "saving the princess from Bowser" is far from being better than a franchise with a hero who accomplishes all exploits possible. And it's even dumber to say that in a video based on the Storybook, because they are one of the most flagrant proofs of Sonic being better than Mario, because it's a creative and original idea which can be cool and has been cool for Sonic, because it was epic and contains some of best moments of Sonic.
Creative franchise with epic moments which always demonstrates originality > Repetitive franchise which is not creative and always does the same thing.

@@maryafantalia8614 to see and experience the strengths of both parties does wonders my man. Instead of getting caught up in a culture war, one could just accept, that we live different lives with different experiences and different things that were important to us when we were young. I'd safely assume that you were a sonic fan growing up, and I can definitely see why, those games are just straight cool! But someone who has grown up with and loves mario sees positives and values in it that someone who hasn't will never see and that goes for sonic as well! So dismissing one franchises quality completely just because of your own experience and viewpoint in life is just ignorant.

    • @maryafantalia8614
      @maryafantalia8614 11 місяців тому +3

@@En_Jaay I also grew up with Mario too and I loved him as a kid, but during my adolescence I was able to see what makes Sonic better. Its characters, its universe, its music too (while Mario has awesome musics too). And this guy doesn't talk like that was an opinion, he said that just like that, for fun. Nothing fair.
And it's not just a viewpoint, it's an analysis. Mario is always the same thing while Sonic innovates and shows badass things. How a franchise devoid of evolution and innovation (with some exceptions) is better than a franchise which always has good surprises thanks to its creativity due to its differences between any of its predecessors and its captivating atmosphere? Sorry but there's no need to play to see what franchise has more interest than another one. It's too easy to say "opinions" when the person denies facts and calls its words factual.
