Dude, the same is with me and Free Riders. When I was 10, it was easy for me to win every race and challenge despite the Kinect being the Kinect. I managed to beat the story. But 7 years later, I can't even beat the first race.
This happend to me with the Lancelot returns fight. I was somehow able to beat him when I was about 4 and was able to do it consistently throughout my childhood until now where I just get murdered by Lancelot if I attempt to beat him now.
Fun Fact: the version of "Aladdin" I read in a fairy tale class I took in college actually has a Genie of the Ring as well as the Genie of the Lamp. I always though Shahra was made up because "lol, sonic and rings, lol."
yeah, the genie in the ring is an underused and basically forgotten concept in media. the only other time i've seen it brought up is in the fables series where cinderella went on a spy mission with alladin and he covered up a ring camera by saying he had a wish left on his ring genie.
I actually knew about the Genie of the ring thanks to, and I’m not kidding here, a Hello Kitty adaptation of Aladdin that I watched as a kid on occasions when I woke up super early and there was nothing else on.

When sonic reads the books, I guess that the characters would look like in his head. Future Edit: The people in the book aren't really sonic's friends, just what sonic imagines the characters as.

Unpopular Opinion: I love Black Knight. It's a game that was aestheticly tailor made for kid me to adore, the story and characterization is among the best in the series, and even today I don't have nearly as many issues with the controls as others have.
Agreed, the controls for Black Knight never bothered me either. I love this game and its amazing soundtrack. On the other hand, I hate Secret Rings and its awful controls.
This series had SO MUCH potential! Imagine Sonic bouncing off a mushroom and onto the back of a dragonfly after being shrunk in Wonderland, Or him having a race against Apollo to see who's faster. Hell... You could have him explore an interconnected world made up of the minor fairy tails like Hansel & Gretel and Goldilocks.
I would have loved to see him in the Journey to the West or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I wouldn't mind it if they tried this again at some point, but given the legacy these games have the chances aren't that good.
The rustic style for the trailers of Sonic and the Black Knight made it look so epic! And that soundtrack was also one of the best soundtracks in gaming ever!

Black Knight's story is actually really good once you look into the themes and how they tie into Sonic as a character, and that plot twist genuinely surprised me because the final King Arthur fight felt like an actual finale
Agreed. Rarely have I seen such genuine plot twists that I hadn't been expecting, yet it still was hinted, which is what truly separates the good and bad plot twists. Like seriously, nowadays they're everywhere, so when a truly well made one stands out, it checks out.

And that whole bit with Merlina wanting to make an everlasting kingdom because she couldn't accept mortality? Then Sonic basically saying that mortality is inevitable, and we should use the time we have to the fullest.
Sonic and the black knight gives me so much memories as a kid. I do understand its problems, yes. But I enjoyed it WAY more than the secret rings and its AWFUL controls.
2:54 False, Secret Rings sold like wildfire, with over 3.3 million units. It was an early Wii game, you think it sold poorly? Lol Black Knight didn't sell as greatly, but it still surpassed 1 million sales in the first year, which isn't bad.
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn was an early Wii game yet is one of the worst selling Fire Emblem games. Granted Fire Emblem wasn't nearly as big an IP at the time as it is now but it goes to show that not every Wii game sold well.

"Make beliefs reborn" "Myths in mind rethought" - these lines mean pretty much the same thing: fantasies (something in where you 'make believe') are born anew or are reimagined; alluding to these familiar stories Sonic will be now traversing through "Question all that's known" - refers to second-guessing the old stories you thought you knew (because they are being 'reimagined') "Legends blurred and torn" - once again alluding to the reimagined stories; what was once familiar territory, now becoming obfuscated and *unfamiliar* because the stories are changing (alluding to the plot where the Erazor Djin is messing with the 1001 Arabian Nights) C'mon Ant... It's not that hard to decipher. The song is about the game; hence being the game's *theme.*
Its a double meaning type of deal that gets meta-reminds me alot of how to train your dragon the hidden world (i know odd choice but hear me out) and how the ending shows how the creators feel about ending the series before it gets ruined by others with nefarious agendas or means of abusing the series as a means of making money so that the series will be perfect as they left it for us to show to future generations to come. Watch that film and i dare you not to see the film representing that. Also recently bill and ted face the music had a sort of meta message that has a double meaning that also connects to the series and its creation and history and a very meta way that is incredibly clever while also having a double meaning that criticizes other reboots or revivals that shit on the old stuff with new stuff taking away what we liked previously and other revivals that fall back on nostalgia without even trying to take a new spin in places. I wont say how the message of bill and ted face the music is expressed cause it recently came out but like the first film especially-its alot smarter than people might give it credit for.
The story is pretty good too. Honestly if you Play it through dolphin and map it to keyboard and mouse the controls actually Aren't bad either. Its a shame it was only a Wii game, I feel if it was a PC game people would've liked it more
I know these aren't popular, but I REALLY liked them. I still do. The creativity, the unique powers, the "shoehorning" into other stories...love it! I know I'm in the minority here, but I would really enjoy seeing a third and fourth game in the storybook series.
I still remember booting up Sonic Riders Zero Gravity in my PS2 for the first time. That game came out during this era of Sonic, and if it weren’t for that game, I wouldn’t be the gamer I am today.

One thing I loved about Black Knight is that it was the only Sonic game to actively showcase fan art in the form of little slideshow videos in the art gallery. Honestly, I think more games should do this. Also the music that plays during those videos is god tier!

Sonic and the black knight was the first game I ever played. It introduced me to video games and introduced me to my favourite video game franchise of all time. I love this game with all its flaws and will defend it to hell and back. Not gonna lie the black knight portion of the video seems incomplete. You didn't talk about the equip items system, the different styles that change up the gameplay for each of the 4 characters, you didn't even talk about soul gage. Plus the points you bring up you seem to rush though them with little to no examples or well thought out critiques other than "motion control bad". I felt the same thing in your review of Shadow the hedgehog where you repeated the same points on why the game is bad over and over again with little explanation or examples given. But we'll just agree to disagree with black knight being a bad game. Love your channel man keep up the great work.
@AJM_The Black-Fenrir I agree with the fact that the reason I love the game so much is due to me being blinded by nostalgia but calling the game hot garbage is just plain wrong. To someone who didn't grow up with it it's just a mediocre sonic spinoff with some weird motion controls nothing outright terrible but nothing outstanding either but to someone who grew up with it and knows the game inside out it's an amazing game. However that's a specific niche that I just so happen to fill and I can easily see why people wouldn't like this game if they didn't grow up with it or give it a fair chance. However this doesn't change the fact the review presented by Antdude feels incredibly rushed. At least when SomeCallmeJohhny reviewed Sonic and the Black knight earlier this week, he went in depth on the problems it had and explained why he doesn't like the game and I respect his opinion despite disagreeing with it cause he explained his points extremely well. However this review seems rushed with no other explanation to why it's bad other than "motion control bad".

I def agree that Black knight is a flawed game but it has enough positives that it can still be fun to a fair amount of people. Hell, I still enjoyed Sonic Chronicles years and years later. Its a VERY flawed game but even after getting much deeper into rpgs and stuff I still had a pretty fun time playing it despite not being that great of an rpg.
I agree man its a pretty decent game. Heck, I'm probably one of the few people who enjoy both storybook games. Having played almost all of the Sonic games I can definitely say there are far far worse games out there than the storybook series. Games like Sonic Spinball, 8 bit Sonic 2, and Mean Bean Machine are either way too hard or just straight up unfair.
A part of me really wishes we got more games out of this sub-series. Imagine the stories Sonic could run through, like Robin Hood or The Three Musketeers or something.
I feel like people have nostalgia for these games because it’s the last time they really tried. Sonic was at his best character wise, and the story wasn’t trying to be a childish joke fest. It actually had stuff going on. And, although it wasn’t really them, there were characters besides Sonic who actually were involved. I don’t understand why they stopped using most Sonic characters after Black Knight. Why would you get rid of a cast filled with personalities? Having only Sonic is boring.
Secret Rings got carried by darkspine sonic so hard and you can never change my mind on the idea that its one of the most badass transformations in sonic history, it deserves to come back imo

Hot counterpoint: Sonic with a Sword is fun. If you ever feel it's slow, follow these rules: whenever you see a cluster of enemies, press A twice, then swing. It homes into every enemy in that group and slices them fast with no speed lost. Attacks like the Homing Roll Swing are the kind they should have added to make the game feel faster and more dynamic than just standing still. While there are some points about Black Knight I will concede, the concept of Sonic with a Sword can be improved, if you strike a balance between speed and attacks. Even now I don't think it's that bad, just monotonous with all those missions you have to do. Holding the Wii Remote and having that be a Sword as a magical experience, and it instantly makes Black Knight better IMO.
I miss being able to play as other characters. The advance trilogy was my introduction to the series and it had a decent amount of characters. I also played a LOT of sonic battle when I was little and that game had several characters.
Blame the haters that jumped on the bandwagon of "multiple characters = multiple playstyles = bad like 06" during the "dark" age; most actual fans WANT to play as Knuckles, Tails, Blaze etc in a 3D game. Also most of the best selling games: Sonic Heroes, S3&K, the advance trilogy etc all have multiple playable characters (hardly a coincidence). At this point Sega should just bite the bullet and reintroduced multiple playable characters in the 3D games OR just leave them out the games completely (I refuse to play another 3D Sonic game where Knuckles and Tails are just glorified cheerleaders that are useless without Sonic's help).

Same. After reading a comment by Omar Mendez, I think it'd be a good call to make a collection for today's consoles + PC containing remakes of Secret Rings & Black Knight that address the criticisms and include various bonus content.
I imagine Secret Rings could do stuff like improve the way Sonic controls at the start, grant more control options (i don't mind the Wiimote controls, but i know others don't like them) and make it more clear how you're supposed to progress. Meanwhile Black Knight could expand on the combat, allow you to play as the knights in all levels after you unlock themand once again more control options. Needless to say the stories can remain unchanged, as they are much better written then anything that's come out of the series in the 2010's. As flawed as these games may be, i still enjoy both of them and if they would recieve remakes it would be a dream come true.

They can’t acknowledge a concept that didn’t exist yet, so I’d still be correct even if they were an obstacle.
The presentation was pretty neat in these games. I especially love the story in Black Knight as it has a really strong message, which is very surprising for a Sonic game. Not to mention, the songs in Black Knight are quite the bangers. Secret Rings did have some catchy songs too, but I loved Knight of the Wind. It's exactly what I'd expect to hear if Sonic did a collab with Final Fantasy. No, not Sonic 06. But in terms of control, Secret Rings is just above Free Riders, making it the second worst control style in the series. Black Knight plays a bit better since you move in a way that makes more sense. But at at the same time, they should have waited for the Motion Plus since it worked well for Skyward Sword. If they continued the Storybook Series, I'd personally call the third game Sonic and the Mythic Odyssey. Or Sonic and the Sea of Treasure. Yeah, imagine Sonic characters playing as Greek heroes or pirates respectively. Dude, Eggman as Long John Silver. Or maybe Silver as Long John Silver because haha. I wouldn't even care about the gameplay, I'd pay to see that alone!
Everyone talks about how incredible the CG cutscenes in these games and Unleashed are, but nobody ever talks about the company behind them- Marza Animation Planet. And if you're wondering why Forces had zero gorgeous prerendered cutscenes, it's because MAP was busy working on a little side project you probably haven't heard of by the name of Lupin the Third: The First.
Opinions on whether or not Black Knight is good are skewed, but we can all agree that unlike Secret Rings, Black Knight's controls actually fucking work.
I never finished Secret RIngs, however I quite enjoyed Black Knight for what it was. I honestly enjoyed it more than Colors. Probably because there is almost no boring 2D platforming

Okay, cmon. Black knight was pretty decent. I legitimately had loads of fun with it back in the day. Yes its easy, yes its a bit mindless at times. But you got an incredible sense of speed, soul surging was crazy fun, and if you got good with timing in combat, you could breeze through entire stages at high speed thats reminicient of speedrunning levels in the original sonic games. In all honesty, I believe unleashed and black knight to be the only genuinely good 3d sonics

Personally... I love black Knight... I never played secret rings... But my GOD was black Knight good... It was hard definetly (I still can't defeat the the final battle with Arthur lol) but it was fun to play... And honestly... I'd love a remaster... Black Knight is epic and that's my opinion... I've been here for many years, and while I've never played these games, when I was younger I had an intrest in them. However if my memory serves me correctly, a long long time ago, (a whole channel ago) there was a certain UA-camr who did a let's play of these games, and i've been watching you ever since. Keep up the amazing work man, and I can't wait to see where you go.
The music is secret rings is still my favorite soundtrack in any sonic game. Also i fw the art style in both games a lot. I might be bias because secret rings was the first ever sonic game ive ever played 😅.

I loved the storybook series. Especially the artwork, music, variety of settings, and animations. I also thought it was fun that Sonic was the only “real character” and that Sonic takes it in stride by the second game, acknowledging the first. The game play was rough tho... especially the controls for Secret Rings. OOF 😅 The experiment was interesting, but not refined.
I would like to see these games remade onto new gen consoles. Could be interesting, especially Black Knight. Also Black Knight has the best Story and Characterization of Sonic in the franchise
I love how one of his complaints about these games is that their is limited control options with swinging your sword and running. Like, how is that any different than your only options being jumping on your enemies and running lol. Like yeah, the homing attack definitely feels better, but you're still only holding forward and tapping A twice lol. It's probably just more noticeable because of how linear the levels are though so you don't have to steer with the joystick much.

honestly, I'd love to see a revamp to these games, I really like the concept and I remember having some fun with Black knight, though the bosses were kind of frustrating.

No joke: Sonic and the Secret Rings is the first Sonic game I ever enjoyed playing. Before it, I'd played 1, 2, 3, and the GCN port of Adventure 2. It was Sonic and the Secret Rings, however, that was the first Sonic game to make me think "Huh. This is kinda fun."

Agreed. Rarely have I seen such genuine plot twists that I hadn't been expecting, yet it still was hinted, which is what truly separates the good and bad plot twists. Like seriously, nowadays they're everywhere, so when a truly well made one stands out, it checks out.

I just played the game, read the lyrics, and put 2 and 2 together.
He literally becomes Alf-Layla-Wa-Layla which means what it does, I mean he literally says "I am the Arabian Nights." which he isn't wrong.
Its a double meaning type of deal that gets meta-reminds me alot of how to train your dragon the hidden world (i know odd choice but hear me out) and how the ending shows how the creators feel about ending the series before it gets ruined by others with nefarious agendas or means of abusing the series as a means of making money so that the series will be perfect as they left it for us to show to future generations to come.

One thing I loved about Black Knight is that it was the only Sonic game to actively showcase fan art in the form of little slideshow videos in the art gallery. Honestly, I think more games should do this. Also the music that plays during those videos is god tier!

Sonic and the black knight was the first game I ever played. It introduced me to video games and introduced me to my favourite video game franchise of all time. I love this game with all its flaws and will defend it to hell and back.
Not gonna lie the black knight portion of the video seems incomplete. You didn't talk about the equip items system, the different styles that change up the gameplay for each of the 4 characters, you didn't even talk about soul gage. Plus the points you bring up you seem to rush though them with little to no examples or well thought out critiques other than "motion control bad". I felt the same thing in your review of Shadow the hedgehog where you repeated the same points on why the game is bad over and over again with little explanation or examples given.
But we'll just agree to disagree with black knight being a bad game. Love your channel man keep up the great work.
@AJM_The Black-Fenrir I agree with the fact that the reason I love the game so much is due to me being blinded by nostalgia but calling the game hot garbage is just plain wrong. To someone who didn't grow up with it it's just a mediocre sonic spinoff with some weird motion controls nothing outright terrible but nothing outstanding either but to someone who grew up with it and knows the game inside out it's an amazing game. However that's a specific niche that I just so happen to fill and I can easily see why people wouldn't like this game if they didn't grow up with it or give it a fair chance.
However this doesn't change the fact the review presented by Antdude feels incredibly rushed. At least when SomeCallmeJohhny reviewed Sonic and the Black knight earlier this week, he went in depth on the problems it had and explained why he doesn't like the game and I respect his opinion despite disagreeing with it cause he explained his points extremely well. However this review seems rushed with no other explanation to why it's bad other than "motion control bad".

Hell, I still enjoyed Sonic Chronicles years and years later. Its a VERY flawed game but even after getting much deeper into rpgs and stuff I still had a pretty fun time playing it despite not being that great of an rpg.

I agree man its a pretty decent game. Heck, I'm probably one of the few people who enjoy both storybook games. Having played almost all of the Sonic games I can definitely say there are far far worse games out there than the storybook series. Games like Sonic Spinball, 8 bit Sonic 2, and Mean Bean Machine are either way too hard or just straight up unfair.

Fun Fact: Secret Rings was the first Sonic game to have a reticle for the Homing Attack. This would become standard in Unleashed one year later.
I feel like people have nostalgia for these games because it’s the last time they really tried. Sonic was at his best character wise, and the story wasn’t trying to be a childish joke fest. It actually had stuff going on. And, although it wasn’t really them, there were characters besides Sonic who actually were involved. I don’t understand why they stopped using most Sonic characters after Black Knight. Why would you get rid of a cast filled with personalities? Having only Sonic is boring.
I played Black Knight again like a year ago, I had a fun time with it honestly. Secret Rings is a mess though.
Secret Rings got carried by darkspine sonic so hard and you can never change my mind on the idea that its one of the most badass transformations in sonic history, it deserves to come back imo

Hot counterpoint: Sonic with a Sword is fun. If you ever feel it's slow, follow these rules: whenever you see a cluster of enemies, press A twice, then swing. It homes into every enemy in that group and slices them fast with no speed lost. Attacks like the Homing Roll Swing are the kind they should have added to make the game feel faster and more dynamic than just standing still. While there are some points about Black Knight I will concede, the concept of Sonic with a Sword can be improved, if you strike a balance between speed and attacks. Even now I don't think it's that bad, just monotonous with all those missions you have to do. Holding the Wii Remote and having that be a Sword as a magical experience, and it instantly makes Black Knight better IMO.

I miss being able to play as other characters. The advance trilogy was my introduction to the series and it had a decent amount of characters. I also played a LOT of sonic battle when I was little and that game had several characters.
I have not played that many Sonic games but playing as Tails in Sonic Mania was very enjoable. I like that little fox.
Blame the haters that jumped on the bandwagon of "multiple characters = multiple playstyles = bad like 06" during the "dark" age; most actual fans WANT to play as Knuckles, Tails, Blaze etc in a 3D game.
Also most of the best selling games: Sonic Heroes, S3&K, the advance trilogy etc all have multiple playable characters (hardly a coincidence).
At this point Sega should just bite the bullet and reintroduced multiple playable characters in the 3D games OR just leave them out the games completely (I refuse to play another 3D Sonic game where Knuckles and Tails are just glorified cheerleaders that are useless without Sonic's help).

Same. After reading a comment by Omar Mendez, I think it'd be a good call to make a collection for today's consoles + PC containing remakes of Secret Rings & Black Knight that address the criticisms and include various bonus content.
I imagine Secret Rings could do stuff like improve the way Sonic controls at the start, grant more control options (i don't mind the Wiimote controls, but i know others don't like them) and make it more clear how you're supposed to progress. Meanwhile Black Knight could expand on the combat, allow you to play as the knights in all levels after you unlock themand once again more control options. Needless to say the stories can remain unchanged, as they are much better written then anything that's come out of the series in the 2010's.
As flawed as these games may be, i still enjoy both of them and if they would recieve remakes it would be a dream come true.

The presentation was pretty neat in these games. I especially love the story in Black Knight as it has a really strong message, which is very surprising for a Sonic game. Not to mention, the songs in Black Knight are quite the bangers. Secret Rings did have some catchy songs too, but I loved Knight of the Wind. It's exactly what I'd expect to hear if Sonic did a collab with Final Fantasy. No, not Sonic 06.
But in terms of control, Secret Rings is just above Free Riders, making it the second worst control style in the series. Black Knight plays a bit better since you move in a way that makes more sense. But at at the same time, they should have waited for the Motion Plus since it worked well for Skyward Sword. If they continued the Storybook Series, I'd personally call the third game Sonic and the Mythic Odyssey. Or Sonic and the Sea of Treasure. Yeah, imagine Sonic characters playing as Greek heroes or pirates respectively. Dude, Eggman as Long John Silver. Or maybe Silver as Long John Silver because haha. I wouldn't even care about the gameplay, I'd pay to see that alone!
Everyone talks about how incredible the CG cutscenes in these games and Unleashed are, but nobody ever talks about the company behind them- Marza Animation Planet. And if you're wondering why Forces had zero gorgeous prerendered cutscenes, it's because MAP was busy working on a little side project you probably haven't heard of by the name of Lupin the Third: The First.

Okay, cmon. Black knight was pretty decent. I legitimately had loads of fun with it back in the day. Yes its easy, yes its a bit mindless at times. But you got an incredible sense of speed, soul surging was crazy fun, and if you got good with timing in combat, you could breeze through entire stages at high speed thats reminicient of speedrunning levels in the original sonic games. In all honesty, I believe unleashed and black knight to be the only genuinely good 3d sonics

I loved the storybook series. Especially the artwork, music, variety of settings, and animations. I also thought it was fun that Sonic was the only “real character” and that Sonic takes it in stride by the second game, acknowledging the first.
The game play was rough tho... especially the controls for Secret Rings. OOF 😅 The experiment was interesting, but not refined.
I would like to see these games remade onto new gen consoles. Could be interesting, especially Black Knight. Also Black Knight has the best Story and Characterization of Sonic in the franchise

I love how one of his complaints about these games is that their is limited control options with swinging your sword and running. Like, how is that any different than your only options being jumping on your enemies and running lol. Like yeah, the homing attack definitely feels better, but you're still only holding forward and tapping A twice lol. It's probably just more noticeable because of how linear the levels are though so you don't have to steer with the joystick much.
Lol it’s cus being able to stop and look around the level and backtrack is completely different than being forced forward the whole time. You must be a cell phone gamer..

honestly, I'd love to see a revamp to these games, I really like the concept and I remember having some fun with Black knight, though the bosses were kind of frustrating.

The storybook series were good tbh. The plot and the music were really well done. Its like you said, the gameplay and forced motion controls reeaaally brought it down. I think they would have been better without the motion controls.
Hmm....I’m not sure if I could call it good if actually playing it bogs it down. It really seems like the story and music is good rather than the game itself. And thanks to YT, we can experience them without the need to play it.

SATBK should honestly get a Switch Remake. Options for swinging the Joy-Con like a sword, or just pressing a button, and multiple quality of life changes combined with some other things, would honestly make an amazing Sonic game on the switch.

These were the last Sonic games that had cool stories. After these games, we never got any cool storylines again, and now we are in kiddie land.
Sonic and The Secret Rings was my first Sonic Game. That’s why I like Forces I think.

No joke: Sonic and the Secret Rings is the first Sonic game I ever enjoyed playing. Before it, I'd played 1, 2, 3, and the GCN port of Adventure 2. It was Sonic and the Secret Rings, however, that was the first Sonic game to make me think "Huh. This is kinda fun."
