I'm a gym nut and I'm taking medical courses so I can give you a few tips. Losing weight is about your calorie intake vs your calorie output. A surplus leads to your body storing the extra calories as body fat. Likewise, a deficit leads to your body burning whatever body fat you currently have. I'm sure you already know this, but there are a few kickers. For one, there's an "ideal" carbohydrate/protein/fat calorie ratio. For losing weight, you want something like 50% carbs, 35% protein, 15% fats. So half of your calories would come from carbohydrates, roughly a third from protein, and the rest from fats. Doesn't have to be exact, but try to limit the amount of calories from fats. For an exercise regime, go with high intensity cardio. Things like long distance running, inclined biking, etc. When you're lifting, go with a high number of reps at a consistent pace with little rest in between sets. You want to be working your ass off for an extended amount of time. That burns calories. And soreness is a good sign for the most part. Unless it's in your joints, soreness is an indicator that your muscles received an adequate workout. If you haven't exercised in a while and are just starting again, expect major soreness. You can workout when you're sore, just not when you're so sore to the point where it's difficult to move. After you've lost a significant amount of weight, you can go on to split your workouts into separate muscle groups and work on lifting with heavy weights and low reps blah blah blah. But for now, don't worry too much about that and just work on burning that body fat. If you ever need help Jeff, feel free to PM me. Oh and make sure you drink water. Plenty of it! You want to stay hydrated.
Plus get enough sleep - not enough means low energy for exercising, lower motivation and higher levels of hormones which make you feel hungrier than you really are, (I forget what they are called.) But the short version is - sleep helps you lose fat and build muscle.
Same boat here. I dropped 100lbs, ran a marathon, got engaged and now here I sit after gaining almost all of it back. Its hard for guys like us to keep it off but I'm with ya Jeff. I'm going back on my diet and exercise routine. I needed this motivation. thank you.
Jeff, you've helped me out of a horrible part in my life. I can honestly Give you the credit for it. I can't quite remember the video but you were outdoors and talked about your life and I can relate to a lot of it. This up coming year I'm going to lose weight. I'm currently 365lbs, it's horrible I gained about 100lbs during that rut you got me out of. The sad thing is I'm only 19. I can't do things that I love anymore and is weighing on me. I can do it. If I don't, I strongly believe I won't make it to 30. I love eating healthy and I've lost 25lbs without exercise in a month and a half. (due to the video you made previously mentioned). I felt great and only can imagine what losing 6x that would be like. I just want you to know I'll be taking this journey with you. Thank you for the time you take to make your videos.
Jeff try this, eat your last meal of the day (dinner) early, as early as possible and dont eat anything else after that, also drink a lot of water, I guarantee this will help. Its my biggest issue, I dont eat alll day long because Im not hungry, but for some reason I get really hungry at night so I end up snacking a lot. I too need to lose some weight.
Drinkin Water is really the thing to look for! Actually it doesn't metter when you eat, what you eat does though. it's as easy as as long as your Calloriebalance is on the right side you will lose and if not you will gain as easy as that. You can manipulate that the easyest way by eating and sports. And enough water, 2-3 liters a day should be normal. Thing is some ppl sleep not that well if they eat late cuz your "corps" has to work all night and being tired makes you weak the next day!
Jeff, I think I speak for everyone down here in the comments and every one of those views (minus the assholes) when I say you've got all of us behind you in this, you've done this shit before, you can do it again, except this time's it's for you AND Christina.
***** hmm, because the occasional beer and hot pepper /plate of wings would completely ruin an entire regime of healthy eating and exercise...? Think you're missing the point.
***** Marcus, I see your content is far superior and you are a vastly healthier person. Oh, wait. You don't even make videos and you're just another opinionated spitfuck. Go fuck yourself.
Happy New Year, Jeff and Christine! Weight is something a lot of people struggle with. No worries, you can do this! Thank you for being you and for all you share with us. You ROCK! Peace & Respect, Duane
cutlerylover Happy new years to you sir, I have a question. I actually got an itazte around the same time you did except a few days earlier i still haven't found settings I'm certain I'm the most happy with as far as the v and w and concerned. Was curious what settings you favor?
As someone who is struggling with his weight and trying to change, this video hit me hard. I know what you're talking about, and when I weighed myself the other day I decided it was time to quit talking and just make that change. Good luck man, we're behind you and its inspiring me!
I am in the same situation, yoyo-ing up an down depending on sources of motivation over the year, everything in life is dependant on the amount of motivation you can muster and to many people dont understand how difficult that can actually be for a lot of us. One thing I found to work fairly well as a blade enthusiast was finding spots in the wilderness where I could build semi permanent shelters and camp locations while at the same time allowing me to test my many different blades. The process of cutting lumbre, fishing, hunting and building structures works well to tone the body and keep my mind on other things than food while also keeping me away from the computer screen. I found this to be one of the best options as when I have "completed" an area I can simply move on to the next and start over, retaining the good feeling of having provided a camp spot for anyone that stumble across it and leaving a few lessons in woodlore like the different types of pot hangers, bed frames, spoons, chairs and such that I end up making in every spot. Considering you now have a wife it might well be you can make it into an even better setup by having her join you at one of these spots for a day of grilling, fishing by the river and... rubbing the goose? ^^ under the stars by a campfire or underneath a proper shelther frame with a roaring fire keeping you warm while the rain pours down outside. (For taking women into the wilds, always get a hold of a couple of good pelt like that of a raindeer so you have a properly comfortable bedding/sitting arrangement). Donno if this will fit you Jeff but I suspect it will once you get used to spending several days in a row in the wilds and it allows you to take things at your own pace as you become more and more fit. Oh yeah, one more thing, when doing anything that taxes your body, make sure to never take a break before you are actually panting a bit and your heart rate is noticeably increased, it's amazing how much of a difference that makes in results, you will be able to spot increases in your lunge capacity from week to week simply by following that one rule.
I've lost over 30 lbs with 50 more to go and you're one of my motivators. And I'm doing it with a lifestyle change that I can honestly live with for the rest of my life. Good luck and keep at it.
Been battling weight issues all my life. What’s worked for me is the past 4 years I have stopped trying to lose weight and started trying to get fit. I obsessed over it and dedicated my time, money and resources to it. I treated it like knife collecting and it became my new obsession and passion. I joined a high end gym (I had been going to planet fitness off and on for almost 5 years prior) I went 6 DAYS a week no matter what and start lifting free weights and watching you-tube videos on who to build muscle not lose weight. Losing weight is easy... eat better... keeping weight off is hard! Tap into that inner collector and begin a new hobby. Your videos have been so inspiring to me and also cost me a fortune in knives. Lol I wish you the best and can promise you that health and fitness is not merely a lifestyle it’s an obsession like knife collecting!
Jeff, I hope the very best for you. Your one video of you shooting your Ruger Single Six is the one video I remember seeing you looking almost sickly. It is my motivation. July 2014 I started out at 5'9 278lbs. Ive been 225-250 for most of my grown up years. I didn't realize I gained that much more. Now, Dec 2014, I'm 223lbs. I actually weighed in about 8 hours ago. No weight loss this week due to Christmas food (ziti an italian bread + candy) but also no gain. Still a plus to me. I did what you did, started off slow, except drink ridiculous drinks like you have in this video. Drink water 95% or more of the time. I did the ketogenic (sp?) diet from July to Sept. Since Sept, I've exercised at least 6 days a week. I bought a 6" aerobic stepper and did that from Sept until early Nov, when I decided to purchase Focus T25 workout. Because I work overnights and have split nights off, I don't have hours to spend everyday to workout. So, I bought that so I can workout for 25 mins a day (plus 2-3 min cooldowns). Since early Nov, I've only lost 10lbs (233 down to 223), but I've also built up every muscle in my body. My upper body is stronger, my legs have improved immensely and my stamina has at least tripled the amount in 5 weeks. I didn't like being that heavy, especially tying my boots to go to work got my winded. You probably don't need any advice for me, but if you happen to read this and have any questions, I'll be happy to answer. Now Jeff..just do it!
Jeff, I am going to tell you a few things. You are one of my favorite people to fallow on UA-cam and in Life. Thank you for being a part of mine and teaching me. Now on to something personal, I met my girlfriend a little over 3 years ago she was on a weight loss adventure when I first met her. She had almost lost 80lbs at that time. As time went on, she grew comfortable with me and I wasn't the best example. She gained all of the weight back. As of January 2014 she started back on her weight loss journey, this time I was much more supportive in any way she needed me to be. (eating the same foods, being active together, ect.) It has almost been a year and she she has lost 96lbs. My point is, gaining weight back happens. You can lose it thought! Stay strong, be dedicated, and I support you! Sarah used the weight watchers App and swears by it, with a lot of working out. Anyways, I am proud of Sarah and proud of you (may not seem like much but I am Proud of you) If I can ever be of help, I am hear. Happy New Year and hear is to a new journey!
I had just been thinking about this whole subject and had been wanting to offer encouragement because when you started losing weight and during you gave me tons of motivation myself to lose weight and I lost 50lbs in the last year and a half and your original success really helped me stick with it. You are a great UA-camr and person and I wish you the best in this endeavor and thank you for helping me with your videos.
U have got a huge pair bro!! Not only do u admit the truth in fact to ur problem, but put it out there n share it with everyone!! Nothing but respect for ya!! Stay up n strong!
Your original 2 videos on weight loss were inspiring to me. I lost about 30-40 pounds and have kept it off. Thanks for that. I wish you success and look forward to the progress vids.
Jeff I really want to thank you for uploading this video. At one point I felt much the same way you do now. That was 2 years ago now I'm completely different and I owe it to one thing, not quiting. Willpower is very important, take working out for example the day you LEAST want to work out is the BEST day to workout to build willpower. There are a lot of things I could recommend to you but it doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something, that being said you should research "intermediate fasting" it's something that helped me out and might help you out too.
You are an inspiration! Just discovered the channel yesterday and have been binge watched a ton of your vids! Keep going with the dieting it sounds like you know what you need to do :) I love the channel is because you speak the truth and come across very genuine in your videos!
I know you can do it Jeff! From this video you have inspired me to work harder on losing weight for myself. I have been working out daily, but I honestly haven't been putting my all into it. I still continue to eat unhealthy foods but brush it off of my shoulder because I use the fact that I work out daily as an excuse to eat those unhealthy foods. But no more! I weigh about 180lb and i'm 5' 11". I used to weigh 160 and my goal is to be that weight again with some muscle. Thank you for this video, Jeff. You have inspired me and i'm sure you have inspired many others with this video. I have 100% faith in you and I know you won't disappoint us or Christina :) Good luck, man.
Jeff you really are an inspiration. You did it once you can easily do this again. Takes alot to come out on youtube and say how you feel. Much respect. Love all your videos.
Good for you Jeff. Just keep getting up, My advice would be to not wait for the new year, but start right this minute. I'm cheering for ya. Kick some ass
I hear ya. It definitely gets harder after you get married, get older, etc., but it's just something that happens when you achieve things in life. You feel like you can afford to slow down and be lazy, and you absolutely should take the time to smell the roses once in a while. We only get one life though, and having loved ones that care about you is probably the best motivation ever. You want to be around for a good long time to give them everything you can and share those awesome moments with them. I'm absolutely a fan of doing little things that are sustainable for the long term like going to the gym 2 or 3 days a week for maybe an hour at a time. It really changes your mindset and your confidence level once you get started. I also recommend finding a trainer to help you, especially if you're new to working out or it's been a while and your physical condition has changed. Good luck to you, Jeff.
Try intermittent fasting, like dont eat until 12PM and then try to limit simple carbs throughtout the day. Try to eat more good fats (avocado and olive oil are) but not too much (around 40-50g a day) and lean protein (turkey and chicken are good). At 8PM, no more eating just water. That will give your body 16 hours of a fasted state. Try to do HiiT cardio as well. And the simplest thing you can do is just walk. Just for half an hour a day take a walk and it is super simple.
Hey Jeff, you have a lot of supporters on here that want to see you happy and healthy. You have a lot going for you. I know you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Keep going and be strong.
I have fought weight my entire life and six months ago weighed 260 lbs. At one point in my life after a divorce I exercised and ate right and lost 70 lbs. and went down to 180 lbs.. and was told I looked sick. Two years later I meet my current wife and became very contented and 15 years later I weighed 260. My Doctor and I both agreed I needed to lose weight. I took him to heart and have lost 20 lbs. over the last four months. Don't lose heart and go back to habits that helped you lose weight a year ago. The encouraging thing is that my wife loved me at 180 and stilled loved me at 260. Keep up the good work.
Jeff, my wife and I are on a weight loss journey together. We are not there yet but about 1/2 way there. We encourage each other and help one another by not bringing snack foods into the house and by keeping the other accountable for eating healthy. Set small achievable goals to help yourself stay motivated. Like you said, 100 lbs is a long term goal, short could be to get below 300. I know you will do it.
From 22:00 on, I swear I was listening to myself speak. (and kinda looking like it too) I'm currently right about the same weight. I've lost a lot of weight but we still have a long way to go. We just gotta stay focus and motivated. YOU CAN DO IT!
You've got a lot of heart Jeff. We all love you man. Just do what you need to do. You can do it. You did it before. So you know you can succeed! Make a goal and go for it man.
Good on you man. If you can try and find someone to exercise with. Nothing helps more than having someone else suffering with you. Also gives you one more person to give you a kick on those days when you really can't face it.
Hey Jeff, been watching your stuff for years now but I really don't comment all that often. I just wanted to let you know that as someone who's struggled with my weight all of my life, your first weight loss video was what motivated me to get off my butt a couple of years ago and start making some changes. Not sure what it was exactly, but something you said struck a chord with me and that very night I got out and took a long walk and I've been exercising and attempting to eat healthier ever since (like you, I struggle more with the food than anything else). It's been a long road, but as of this week I'm down 150 pounds so far (from 325 down to 175). I didn't mean to drag this on for so long, just wanted to let you know you've been an inspiration over the years and I'm positive you can hit your goal of 199 and keep it off, just have to take it a day at a time! Good luck man, and keep doing what you do!
I'm not heavy at all myself, I'm 145 but keep in mind I'm 17, 5 foot nine and play lacrosse but I believe in you man I've been watching since I was in middle school and I love your videos. Good luck Jeff
Very lucid and honest talk, Jeff. Only advice, from a much older "fart", is to not be too hard on yourself. When those thoughts come, just RISE above them with what you know to be true, what you know you're capable of. And, you're right; divide and conquer.
Good Luck Jeff. You'll get there, I know you will. You helped me loose 15 pounds last year! I followed your weight loss tips from your past videos. Favorite one was where you took apples and put Raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing over it for a healthy dessert. Dont know why that one sticks out to me, but it just does. Great tip. Thanks Jeff!
Hey Jeff. Try hiking, me and my father (yes, im 16) went to one of the most known trail of Finland, Karhunkierros in Kuusamo. I lost 10 kilos. We ate those campingfoods in bag (like mre but not that much energy), caned meatand and beefjerky. We walked 5-12 km/day, best/worst day was 22km. Our bags were about 20 kilos when we started. Over the hills and a far away! Just walk 2-3miles in woods and soon you are in great shape. I am 186 tall and weigh in at over 93 kilos, lets do this together! How is your first handmade knife doing?
I did the same thing this past year but on a smaller scale. I lost 20 pounds but put it back on. I always find a way to celebrate and reverse any success I have. I haven't given it all for weight loss in 25 years. I am going to try again. Maybe I'll succeed this time. In any case love you brother!
I remember thinking about your weight and how you had stopped doing dieting/workout related videos a few months ago... i honestly think talking about it once again will help you get back into shape. New Year is coming up and it seems you have everything you want so far, the wife, the house, the channel's doing great... just focus on this, best of luck Jeff ;)
I'm happy you're taking a big step for you and your new family! I wish you the best of luck, and I'm glad you're using us for accountability; the determination to be held accountable is a big part of having success :)
You are right Jeff, weight loss is a lifestyle. Its about being healthy and feeling good. I am 6'3" and about 270lbs, about 10 years ago I was 200. What happened you may ask? I met the woman I am now married to and we love eachother unconditionally. We have both gained a lot of weight, at one time I was 290. So many things you said in this video are true, food is a drug with a very short hi and immediate regret. I along with everyone else here will be pulling for you. Thanks for being real and being a motivation for me personally.
Jeff man your not alone. I'm 45 very soon 46 years old. I weigh 306 pounds. I use to weigh 155 in high school. 1988. From there I became a cop in 1992 at 205 pounds. In a few years I got up to 255. Started lifting weights got down to 205. Stop and started that for years. By the early 2000's I got 275 then 280, every year up a few pounds. I swore I wound Never hit 300. But I did. Then I tried to justify it by sayin it was my age. For the past week I've started working out again. I tried of my back hurting all the time. I'm going to get down to at least 250 pounds this year. Go for it JEFF! Let's both go for it!
Jeff, You are correct in the "life-style change". BUT, here's the formula that's WORKED for me that I enjoyed. It's a basic concept:.."Sparta during the week, but enjoy the weekends" strategy. Last December, I was 225 lbs. and B-Pressure..(you don't want to know...) (most ever, at 5'11'', @ 60 yrs old). Here's what I did. Monday through Friday, no booze at all until Friday evening. I got up early enough in the morning (40 minutes), to lift free weights, use my stationary bike, (use hand weights to pump upper body while peddling, stomach crunches etc.). YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK OUTS IN THE AM !!. Breakfast; low carb toast, healthy margerine and tomato sandwich with coffee. Lunch, every day,raw veggies with extra virgin olive oil, spicy Mrs. Dash, Reg.Mrs. Dash an Sea Salt, (have an apple mid day if you want). Before supper, eat sunflower seeds, almonds while relaxing with a nice glass of cranberry juice to wind down instead of (a drink). Just before eating supper. a large glass of water. Eat a normal size supper. Then, the Friday, Sat. & Sunday...same breakfast routine...maybe add some eggs, no lunch, then eat whatever you want, and drink whatever you want Friday through Sunday evening. It worked great for me. BP way down, lost 22 pounds. Still going good. Regards.
You'll get there jeff you've done it before. Also i have alot of respect for you for making this video it takes a strong person to do something like that. Keep up the good videos :)
I feel for you Jeff. It takes discipline to achieve what you want and to stick with it. You have to want it hard enough. You can do it Jeff. Lots of cardio, strength training, high protein, moderate carbs, low fat, plenty of micro nutrients and water.
"The more I eat the worse I feel, the worse I feel the more I eat." Behavioral modification is what you need to apply and maintain. Do not try to do everything at once; ie go on some extreme diet and hit the gym. Ease into changing your habits and weigh yourself every day. Short term goals will turn into long term benefits. I wish I could be there to help you through this. And remember; water is your friend.
wow, 150 lbs, that's impressive! you've done it once, you can do it again! i never experienced such a dramatic weight loss but i'm trying to stay in shape… i got myself down from about 200 lbs to 170. i know that's not as much as you dropped but i managed to keep the weight very well. i'd like to give you my advice: working out is a great way to go. but to really succeed you won't get around changing your way of eating, and i know you know that ;). i did not change my food, i still eat the same stuff but i just eat ONE portion per meal. that's really been good for me, so you might try going this way too. the only things i've cut down on are snacks and soft drinks. i know you'll reach your goal and wish you all the best! :) stay strong!
You can do it Jeff! if your as motivated as you sound then you'll be able to anything you set your mind to. Keep it up and I wish you the best of luck!
I admire your frankness and honesty in this video. I am a new subscriber to you, although I have watched several of your videos, I just recently subscribed. You touched on two key items in your discussion about your struggles with your weight. One was lifestyle and the other was how you went so far overboard the last time. The key is moderation. I do not believe in diets. They just don't work long term. In my opinion and experience, moderating your eating and fitness routine is the key to making it work. It shouldn't seem like a huge deal to do your daily workout and eating routine. Just do simple things like cutting out steak & potatoes except for 2 or 3 times per month. Eat chicken and seafood instead prepared without a lot of sauces and other oils or fatty additives. A workout for a day could be as simple as walking for 30 minutes with 5 pound ankle weights on each leg. In fact, the weather here where I live is quite crappy this time of year so I actually walk inside my house with my ankle weights on for about 30 minutes. I carry my tablet around with me while I'm walking and watch youtube videos. Get yourself some 5 and 10 pound rubber coated weights and carry those with you as you walk around the house and do arm movements to add some extra cardio to your walk. My point is, make it simple and sustainable, don't go overboard and make it a chore. Good luck on your endeavor and I'm wishing you great success.
I'm behind you, brother. I'm actually starting a new routine and tightening up my diet tomorrow. I'll have to check in with you periodically. My friends from home and I regularly text and email each other asking about how things are going and trade motivational videos. It helps. Best of luck to you. You can definitely do it. For yourself, your wifey and to show all of your subscribers that it can be done, too. Rock on.
Last year I made a resolution to lose 80 pounds. I managed to lose about 40 pounds. My cardiologist said that 80 in one year wasn't realistic. At the beginning of the year in 2014, I weighed 283 pounds @ about 6' tall. I started eating less and riding my bicycle. I'm now somewhere between 239 and 243.
Despite common belief, eating less is extremely dangerous and if you eat too little your body goes into starvation mode and stores fat which is opposite your goal. Also, bmi numbers are bullshit numbers. They mean nothing in the real world(not that you mentioned bmi).. please make sure you take in at least 2000 calories a day. A person needs 1200 in a day if they're in a coma and more if they're active. Every BODY is different so it's best to seek professional help to lose weight. Just some information for you, Jeff and whoever else reads this. God bless :)
Justericpersonal Well you have some good points, but some of your ideas are a bit misinformed. While it is true that 1200 is the minimum safe amount for women, 1500 for men, your idea of "Starvation mode" is mostly myth. It's always calories in vs calories out, what this means is that if you eat less calories than you expend your going to lose weight no matter what. The reason it is recommended to not go below these calorie goals is not because of fat, it is because of the greatly increased chance of losing lean muscle mass. This along with a general lack of nutrition when you eat that amount can create a multitude of health problems.
I agree with some of your comment but starvation mode is not myth. You can actually become fatter by eating too little because your body thinks it's starving so it holds on to what it can. There's more to say but I'm sleepy lol.
1. Calculate your daily calloric needs( typ Google: daily calloric needs. 2. Download the 'myfitness' app to track your callories. 3. Start lifting weights(no cardio ,lift heavy is You wanna maintain all of your muscle mass, cardio Will come later. 4. Eat your daily calloric need for a month( You wont lose weight this is to create a healty mentablism. Which Will pervent THE jojo effect . 5. Create a calloric deficit. Not a big one just 50 cal below your daily needs. A big deficit Will mess up your metablism. 6. Start doing a little cardio once THE weightloss has come to a stop or decreasjg your callories a bit. 7. Once You are on your weight goal slowy increase callories to prevent THE jojo effect. You been kn a deficit. Give THE body time to adjust to THE increase in callories
As his doctor told the NY Times food writer, Mark Bittman: "You're a smart guy, figure it out." Avoid all the 'systems' and gimmicks. You said it, it's a lifestyle change. Eat real food in moderation. Avoid corporate 'food.' Get lots of exercise. Maybe try a step counter. Walks, biking, hikes. Yes, you can walk in winter.
All the best Jeff!! I will be losing weight as well. Would like to drop 30 lbs by the end of March. Great saying....I say...."Nothing tastes as good as slim feels." A big thing that helps me is to eat dinner at 5:30 pm...and that's it until morning. It really does help!!! Good luck Jeff...you can do it!!
Hey, I just did 12 sets of pushups (300 in total) and 6 sets o bicep curls (120 in total) with some in-between stretches and all that good stuff. thanks for being a motivating background noise :D
Hey, it wasn't my intention to show off... well, ok, maybe a little bit :D I also have extra 15-20 pounds on me and struggle with it quite a bit so it is motivating seeing other people so determined on achieving their ideal body shape :)
jeff you inspire me and alot of other people on here to do the same. i wish there was somthing you could make like a website that people from here and you could challenge each other, that would be really good motivation
Rock on man. I'm in a similar situation in that I need to get working out. Used to work a very physically demanding job and was in great shape. Moved up to a better job (desk job) and WOW have I gotten flabby. While I haven't gained much weight (up to 185 from 175) I have lost most of my muscle and replaced that weight with flab & fat. I feel weak, tired, my back and knees hurt when I'm active. Just this morning starting looking into gyms and trainers. Get to man!
Hey bud, try not worrying about the numbers so much and just crush it at the gym/jogging or whatever your chosen exercise is. I don't worry about my weight so much as my gut. I've lost 30 pounds just doing push-ups, sit-ups and squats. I'm still chubby but I eat what I want and just try too work more. I weigh myself about once a month. Try more cardio and less dieting. Even just walking when you have time instead of driving will help. I still haven't hit my goal but I will and I hope you do as well
Also....do not diet as studies show people who diet generally are going to put it back on and then some. Most diets are actually starvation plans. Do NOT lower or do anything with calories without help. You can actually eat MORE and lose weight. Your body needs calories to work. You don't have to lower them really. Your muscles need calories to build so if you lower your caloric intake your muscle may not build but you will lose fat. Muscles incinerate fat but if you're not eating to build muscle then your fat will come back. I hope that makes sense.
Also, another word of advice. Initially given that you have much weight to lose it's understandable that you're focusing on numbers. As you get closer and closer to your goal though I wouldn't hinge your success so much on how much you weigh but rather how you look. I used to be obsessed with the number on the scale, and often times I would actually look better (because I gained muscle weight) but I would get angry at the stagnancy of my weight. So I said forget the scale and since then I go by body fat percentage and how I look in the mirror. I weigh myself every once in a while just out of curiosity to see where I'm at, but I no longer hinge my success on that.
Just count your calories man, just do it! Use an app or something and add everything you eat. Make sure your calorie intake for the day is about 500 kcals lower than your TDEE (total daily energy expense). Exercise burns calories so the IN-OUT scale topples even further for that particular day. Just tell yourself to man up and do it! its the best thing i've ever done and the only problem i have now is that i wish i started earlier!
I know you have a lot of shade where you live, but if you can find a spot with good sunlight you should plan a vegetable garden for this coming season. Also, eat oatmeal for breakfast! Not the instant crap either. Plain old oatmeal with a little fruit. Tons of soluble fiber so you'll feel full for a longer period of time. Can't wait to see your progress, wish you the best!
Hey Jeff, I've been following you for a while now and have been subscribed for many years now. I've seen your outlook on health and I truly feel that you can do this again. I personally lost a lot of weight from being obese. My biggest advice to you if you decide to take it is just to keep on persisting man. We all have those days where we eat our hearts out. But everyday that you wake up, you have a choice to live healthy that day or unhealthy. I would love to talk more to you about this if you'd like. I hope you are doing well and just realize that you can reverse what you've done.
Long time fan. I was 325 at my biggest now went down to 240 now back to 260. I won't preach on what to do. Just know that the numbers aren't everything and consistency is the true key.
Jeff I'll be honest I am a very liberal man and I don't agree with a lot of the things you say about guns but I watch your videos religiously. I do this because you are so honest and sincere in your videos. I feel like after watching your videos I actually know you. And because of this I can honestly say, regardless of our differences in political view, you are a very strong and empowering individual. I have struggled with this issue as well and it sucks. But from what I know about you, you can do it. I promis
i think i know how you feel. two years ago i was 280, then i decided to do sports- football and wrestling. in 8 months i dropped down to 215 pounds, i could run 3 miles, bench 205 pounds, squat 245, had an 8 minute mile, and i could do 100 sit-ups, and 50 pushups. i was in great shape. then i dropped an axe on my foot, severed two tendons, and almost lost a toe. luckily i had surjury and now everything functions how it should, but it threw me out of my grouve of working out, and i started suffering from depression. i sat around and in a year i blew up to 250 pounds, and as of now im almost 280, in horrible shape, covered in stretch marks, and ugly. i spent a month in the nut-house because i was suicidal, and im on medication for it, but i still suffer from it, and because of it, i cant find motivation to work out again.
The key is to change your mindset - and change your lifestyle. Live healthy and exercise. but you know that yourself , of course.... Character is the motto! Do not give up my friend!
I'm a college wrestler and I have lost about 30 pounds since the season started. I know it may not seem like alot but if you take a look at my body you will see that 30 pounds is alot. I am 6 foot 2 and have very little body fat. I went from 220 to 185 in about 3 weeks. Since the season is done for me, I have gained back 25 of those 35 pounds I lost... and it is depressing. I know the struggle at least a little bit. By the way... being a college wrestler is actually a financial weight off of your shoulders... seeing as the only food you buy is rice cakes and water............ Much respect brother.
protein high, carbs taper as day progresses, Lowell fat intake with several meals a day. hit the gym cause muscle requires calories will burn fat. remember, it took time to add weight so be consistent and your body will respond. stay strong and keep making good choices. if you have a DUCK IT day, no problem. you did not fail. proud of you for your proactive decision.
A few years ago I was 6"3 200 lbs, and I maxed my A.P.F.T. in the Army. I am going to be humble, and sum it up by saying I was a very good soldier. Well I got done with active duty, and during my time in the reserves, I put on about 25 lbs. Then I got married, got out the military, had two children, and I just weighed in at 300lbs the other day. I think part of it is getting older. Being married and having children doesn't help, but the reality is I put on weight from lack of physical exertion, and eating every doughnut and high fructose corn syrup based product I got near. I am going to lose it though, and I know you can do it too. No big deal.
Don't just do cardio, weight lift too, eat a lot of lean meat and lettuce.Nothing after 7:00P.M.,but water. After you are in o.k. shape, and doing a lot of running start eating carbs, but only for breakfast. If you lose weight just by cardio and fasting, it will come right back once you stop fasting. Also losing weight very quickly, can cause you to lose muscle mass, you want to avoid that. Build your core by doing a lot of situps, mt.climbers, and fludder kicks.Do a lot of pushups.
My mom has struggled with weight gain her whole life, I with drugs before the military, then alcohol once I joined. 8 years sober now, counseling, group therapy, meetings, support groups then a diagnosis with panic disorder. Owe I thought I had heart trouble, it was not heart trouble the doc said it was Panic disorder. One small pill everyday, I feel great, no more crazy stress, heart pounding, skin on fire, etc. Food addiction is just that, it's taboo to say that, but thats exactly what it is. Its sad, the fad diets are more profitable than treating the real issues. As an alcoholic I have an endless support group, as a food addict their's not much out there for you. I try to listen to my mom, be that support group; but she resist the idea of "food addict" so here she is trying the same thing she's done for the last 60 plus years; gain weight, lose weight. Go see a doctor, get a support group, it would be nice to just give this a try and if it doesn't work you can join the 98% that fail the traditional way of doing things. Wish you all the best Jeff, we on UA-cam do share allot about ourselves, at your age I would have never had the guts to do what you do here on the Tube, you're mature beyond your years. Thank you for sharing your struggles with us, it makes me reflect on my daily struggle to not revert to my old ways.
Hey Man. Been watching your videos for a while now! You seem like a honest, genuine person (unfortunately rare these days)...one of the few things that really drew me to your channel. Just wanted to give you some support. don't beat yourself up about the whole weight thing, but do keep yourself accountable. Wish you the best of luck 2015. I'll be trying to lose a few lbs myself. You can do it.
Jeff, if I can lose it at 60, you can do it too. I used a fitbit to track my exercise and diet with a goal of a 500 calorie deficit per day. That adds up to a 1 pound per week weight loss. My initial goal was to be under 200 and I saw 199 a month ago. Last week, I set a new personal fitness challenge of walking 23 miles in one day. I've documented my weight loss on my UA-cam channel. Good luck. You can do it.
Hey Jeff, a kind word of advice, do the weights along with the cardio the entire time. In the initial stages where your body is untrained and new to training stimulus; it's easy to both gain muscle and lose fat. Don't just do cardio. If anything do circuit training, unless you really want to put on some serious muscle, then I would get on a legitimate program.
Jeff, my personal experience: I lost almost 30 pounds in around 3 months, and I DID NOT gain weight again. Get in the gym, if you cant afford it, no problem, just make up your own personal program. Important rules: Work out every second day, NOT every day, for about an hour to an hour and a half. Only drink water or tea, no diet soda or so. Drink a pint of water half an hour before you eat. Try to eat healthier, especially more fruit, veggies and things like rice instead of pasta. Allow yourself to have something fatty or very unhealthy once a week, e.g. a croissant or pizza or whatever. If you crave something or really want to snack: eat things like Olives, Popcorn with less butter, bread etc. What also helped me: look at the package of some high calorie meal, and then think about how much you could eat of something you still very much like, but is alot healthier! If you keep that routine, you will lose wheight, and as you gain muscles(even though you wont see them at first), your body will burn more calories even though you´re not doing anything! That means you can eat more without gaining weight! Don´t stress yourself into it, and ONLY eat things you like! If you eat healthy stuff that you dont like, you´ll punish yourself and feel sick of it, thus throwing your goal away soon! Greets and I hope you succeed!
Also: PLEASE do not fall for any of these diet systems like no fat or no carb diet things, they´re absolute bullshit! Don´t be scientific about it, use your common sense and how you feel, most times your body will tell you what he needs!
I know how it feels, I was pretty fat when I was younger but got into MMA and felt great. Now I am gaining some back but I feel like I gained it all back
Jeff, I work two of the worst jobs for weight gain I sit on both do minimal movement lift extremely heavy people sometimes and eat all kinds of garbage. I recently like you started making healthy smoothies and boy after a few and a meatless Monday If I eat a greasy hamburger I get sick. The body rejects what I use to eat. You can do it. I looked sickly after bootcamp and IT school. I hope we all can hold you up when you have a rough day. Go get it Brother.
cutlerylover My recommendation: Quit all sugar (pure, candy, cakes, cookies, soft drinks, sauces) and all carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, chips, pizza, fries, coating, bananas [bananas have more carbs than potatoes], beans, peas and corn)!! Only eat vegetables (cucumber, tomatoes, spinach, asparagus, zucchini, carrots, peppers, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi), fruits (grapes, oranges, mandarines, watermelon, apples), fish, meat, sausage products, nuts, eggs and cheese and only drink water or sometimes milk (more calories than coke but NO sugar and it makes you full!)! And use olive oil for browning your meat and fish!! It's much healthier than all the seed-oils like rapeseed oil or sunflower oil. If you eat healthy like that you even can eat in the middle of the night. This has absolutely no effect on your weight. Because the fat cells can only store sugar and carbs which get transformed into sugar. All other stuff, proteine, fat, vitamins have to be burned by your body immediatelly and doesn't get stored in your fat cells. Then start to walk 2 miles/day, when you feel better a few weeks in it walk 3 miles/day, then 5 miles/day up to 10miles/day and start running instead of walking! By this you WILL lose minimum 80lbs/year!!! Guarenteed! This is not a diet. Just a dietary change, you don't starve yourself, which will help you to endure it. You just eat yourself full with healthy food. BUT you have to stay on this way of eating for the rest of your life or you will suffer the dreaded Yo-Yo effect because when you lose weight your fat cells in your body don't vanish! They stay in your body, empty themselves and get microscopic. Like little baloons which lose air. The number of fat cells in your body will always stay the same. A few exceptions are holidays, birthdays or parties with your friends there you can eat ONE piece of cake or drink 2-3 alcoholic drinks. Another advice Jeff: Weight yourself only all 3 months!!! Not every day, not every week and not every month!! This 3-monthly weight-in will boost your motivation!!! GOOD LUCK!
Most diet plans and random tips are full of gimmicks. All you need to do is eat 300-500 cals below your maintenance level(find a calculator online). I lost 80 pounds in 10 months(240-160). Im 6 foot 2 btw. I also lift weights 4 times a week but thats not really necessary for fat loss.
c'mon Jeff you can do it buddy!!!! We love ya and support you man! The best thing you can do, is eat JUST three meals a day and that's it. That's how I lost 30 pounds in a month!
Iron Pirate Ghrelin, the hunger hormone
Keep on working toward your goals! you can do it!!!
You can do it brother. Keep your head up and your feet churning.
The human body has an amazing ability to recover. Just keep at it and slowly start exercising. Don't do a crash diet like Jeff did.
Thanks, yes 7pm is my cutoff now, only water after that, I also am getting up earlier to start the day, thanks Jason
cutlerylover Good job man, this video is motivating me to get healthy as well, thanks for this.
Vollmeissel3achtel
at least imop
The reason you get so hungry at night is because you starve during the day. Eat at least a little to avoid binges or snacking or any of it.
Jeff, I think I speak for everyone down here in the comments and every one of those views (minus the assholes) when I say you've got all of us behind you in this, you've done this shit before, you can do it again, except this time's it's for you AND Christina.
Hell yeah brother, you said it
Hello Japanese/Canadian flag.
I second that!
Happy New Year, Jeff and Christine!
Weight is something a lot of people struggle with. No worries, you can do this!
Thank you for being you and for all you share with us. You ROCK!
Peace & Respect,
Duane
Thanks Duane same to you!
cutlerylover Happy new years to you sir, I have a question.
Jeff,
I am going to tell you a few things.
You've got this Jeff, you just got through the hardest part...owning it. Now make it happen. We're all here for you man!
Incredible courage to put yourself out there like that brother! You have the right mindset to make it happen. You WILL DO THIS!
Keep going with the dieting it sounds like you know what you need to do :)
I love the channel is because you speak the truth and come across very genuine in your videos!
Just keep getting up,
My advice would be to not wait for the new year, but start right this minute.
First step is realizing your problem and having a motivated mindset, so you can already check that off your list!
Good luck brother. You got this! You too are an inspiration to all of us!
"A case of the fuck its" That was hilarious
You can do it man. You inspire me to look at myself and change
You really are a great inspiration Jeff, you got this!!
When grocery shopping try buying whole foods with ingredients that you can actually read, with no hidden sugars
Keep the faith Jeff. I'm in the same boat starting on the long road to lose weight and most of all get healty
I feel for you Jeff. It takes discipline to achieve what you want and to stick with it. You have to want it hard enough. You can do it Jeff. Lots of cardio, strength training, high protein, moderate carbs, low fat, plenty of micro nutrients and water.
"The more I eat the worse I feel, the worse I feel the more I eat."
Behavioral modification is what you need to apply and maintain.
Do not try to do everything at once; ie go on some extreme diet and hit the gym. Ease into changing your habits and weigh yourself every day. Short term goals will turn into long term benefits.
I wish I could be there to help you through this.
And remember; water is your friend.
Takes a real man to make a video like this one. I believe you can do it . Thanks for sharing your story, you motivate me!
wow, 150 lbs, that's impressive! you've done it once, you can do it again! i never experienced such a dramatic weight loss but i'm trying to stay in shape… i got myself down from about 200 lbs to 170. i know that's not as much as you dropped but i managed to keep the weight very well.
i'd like to give you my advice: working out is a great way to go. but to really succeed you won't get around changing your way of eating, and i know you know that ;). i did not change my food, i still eat the same stuff but i just eat ONE portion per meal. that's really been good for me, so you might try going this way too. the only things i've cut down on are snacks and soft drinks.
i know you'll reach your goal and wish you all the best! :) stay strong!
It takes a lot of courage to discuss this personal matter, Jeff. Best of luck with it.
You can do it Jeff! if your as motivated as you sound then you'll be able to anything you set your mind to. Keep it up and I wish you the best of luck!
Do it for yourself bro. We'll all support you through it as best as we can.
Hang in there Jeff, Ive been watching from the beginning and your one of the few channels I really respect.
Good for you... Show off
Hey, it wasn't my intention to show off... well, ok, maybe a little bit :D I also have extra 15-20 pounds on me and struggle with it quite a bit so it is motivating seeing other people so determined on achieving their ideal body shape :)
nihontoman just shut up
Tyler Raber why may I ask? :/
nihontoman you know why
jeff you inspire me and alot of other people on here to do the same. i wish there was somthing you could make like a website that people from here and you could challenge each other, that would be really good motivation
Get to man!
hey Jeff i wish you luck in your journey, i hope this is a regular thing, i think it is very motivational
You are an inspiration to a lot of us bro. Keep up the good fight.
Bro I'm right there with you. Started a software consulting job 2 years ago. Now fat, depressed and do nothing to help myself loose wait.
Just remember its a life change! Losing weight is 70% diet, 30% exercise.
protein high, carbs taper as day progresses, Lowell fat intake with several meals a day. hit the gym cause muscle requires calories will burn fat. remember, it took time to add weight so be consistent and your body will respond. stay strong and keep making good choices. if you have a DUCK IT day, no problem. you did not fail. proud of you for your proactive decision.
Hey Jeff, good for you man! I just made the decision to lose some weight too and bought a bicycle to start my journey! All the best!
::thumbs up:: :-)
real talk! great video! goodluck!!!! hope you have a great new year !!
keep your head up, set your goals, And seek help from people to support and motivate you! You'll do it man!
Also:
PLEASE do not fall for any of these diet systems like no fat or no carb diet things, they´re absolute bullshit!
Don´t be scientific about it, use your common sense and how you feel, most times your body will tell you what he needs!
I too am overweight and this video inspired me to decide to start loosing weight. Thanks Jeff.
I know how it feels, I was pretty fat when I was younger but got into MMA and felt great. Now I am gaining some back but I feel like I gained it all back
I wish you good luck Jeff! I personally have trouble gaining weight, not too sure how to accomplish that however.
Jeff,
I work two of the worst jobs for weight gain I sit on both do minimal movement lift extremely heavy people sometimes and eat all kinds of garbage.
GOOD LUCK!
I know you can do it Jeff! Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing your best self in 2015!!!
Life is a marathon not a sprint the secret is never give up no matter what and learn from your mistakes and move on!
c'mon Jeff you can do it buddy!!!! We love ya and support you man! The best thing you can do, is eat JUST three meals a day and that's it. That's how I lost 30 pounds in a month!
