The warmer they are, the quicker they breed and grow. I used to breed them for my lizards. I covered the top with newspaper. If you use a fine square mesh 1/8” wire on top to keep the beetles in and move it to a new box of bran, weekly, you can keep the resultant worms in age groups but of course its a little more work. Just be careful if you strain them out to put them in a new container of bran because the dust from their excreta can be very irritating to your lungs.

I use plastic bins for mine. I put window screening on the bottoms which works great for the beetles, but not for the worms. The beetle waste and eggs fall through the screen into another bin. However, I found that the worms would chew through the screening. It was just easier to sift the worms out with a colander.

Is there a stage between larvae and pupae? I keep looking for pupae, but I haven’t found any. I do see a lot of motionless worms, though. At first, I thought I should remove them because maybe they’re dead, but then I thought they might be on their way to becoming pupae

Actually meal worms are a big source of protein and roasting or drying can keep them for quite a while. Then just grind into a powder and add to your bread, muffins, and such and no one even knows they are eating them lol.
